our bedroom - love the jewel-toned colors!
    Carolyn B.

On our first trip to Traverse City, we stayed at this lovely Bed & Breakfast! It was built in 1905 by a family who made their riches in the lumber industry. Barb and Hank have painstakingly been returning this inn to it's earlier grandeur. I was absolutely blown away by the stenciling done in the house. According to Barb, most of the house was wallpapered and taking down the paper from old plaster can uncover more problems than it is worth. So, a very talented stenciling artist redid the appearance of their walls. Because I stencil, I can really appreciate the time it takes, but she even added her own shading to take everything up a step. You can look at the many photos I will attach to see some of her work. My favorite part was the tray ceiling on the third floor! It took 9 different stencils to achieve this look. One standout feature was the common kitchen area on the third floor. Many B & B's will offer cookies, tea, coffee or water, but this place outdid themselves. Besides what I already mentioned, there were candy bars, muffins, cheese and crackers, wine, beer, cokes (both diet and regular), salty snacks, nuts, cider and hot chocolate mix. There was a grand piano in the parlor which the host played for us if we asked. Sitting on the front porch and talking with the other guests was so pleasant and welcome before we walked to find a restaurant to eat (which were all within walking distance). Because they gave us a key to the house, we could come and go as we pleased. Hank gave us suggestions for places to eat while Barb showed us around the house and gave us a very nice map to show us where we might want to go exploring. The entire house was clean and inviting. One reason that prevented me from giving this place an enthusiastic 5 stars is that our bathroom sink has separate faucets for hot and cold water which makes it impossible to get a nice tepid water for washing your face - a minor thing. However, the main reason is that, according to my husband, the bed squeaked whenever I moved during the night! Keep in mind that the rates can be a little pricey and the breakfast on the morning we were there was pretty good, but not great. From reading other reviews, they serve different things on different days, so you might be luckier than we were.

When the owner mentioned it, I was very disappointed, but once we were there, I was so happy with the opportunity. With any B&B, you're staying in the main house, having idle chit chat with other guests, and sometimes hear people in other rooms. The cabin, you have none of this, just perfect tranquility, silence, and isolation. The owners stocked up the fridge for us and we can have breakfast in our own cabin. It was more of a continental breakfast, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, granola, etc..., but it was so pleasant. The cabin is located about 500 feet from the main house and several miles from the main road, and about 8 miles from downtown Traverse City. You really get in the woods feeling without being to far from the city and you have a river flowing through your backyard. It is a really nice place and I would gladly stay there again.

The jacuzzi in the room was definitely a highlight and made the stay feel relaxing. That being said, the balcony was pretty disappointing. We were on the first floor and it was really small with plastic chairs and no sunlight, so we didn't end up using it at all. It felt a bit misleading compared to how it looked on the website but we didn't care too much.. We did enjoy the pool and hot tub, and overall the place has more of an older, vintage feel. The staff were really nice and anytime we requested something it was handled quickly and everything went smoothly. I would consider staying again, but I would maybe skip the balcony next time.

We had a very nice lakeside room with a spacious balcony. One word of caution the rooms facing east especially the lower levels look at a crummy empty lot. The third floor may be somewhat better. They do warn you that the view of the lake is partial and perhaps better than looking at the parking lot but... The room itself was nice with a larger refrigerator and an extra sink outside the bathroom which is handy. There is a large indoor pool which we didn't use but it looked inviting. The location is close enough to downtown and all of the shops and restaurants that you can walk - under a mile each way. They also have a shuttle bus that on request will take you into town which we used one night when we decided we would only walk back. The only minor ding is their free breakfast was weak compared to most chain hotels. The hot entrees never varied over the three mornings. Overall for the rate this was a great experience.

Our stay at the Grey Hare was thoroughly enjoyed by both of us. Derrek and Sarah were so attentive and made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. Every morning, Derrek served us a special homemade pastry with coffee at 8:30am while Sarah made our breakfast, ready at 9am. The timing was very relaxing and gave us a chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery surrounding the inn. We stayed in the Barnyard room, which was roomy with a separate sitting room where we could relax and enjoy the view of cherry orchards and bay. The linens were top quality, and the bed was very comfortable. It is a lovely log cabin with a great living room with a television that you are allowed to watch Netflix on and a kitchen, which is mostly used for cooking breakfast. It also has a hot tub, that you can use at your leisure. The best part about the bed and breakfast is the beach with its patio, deck, fire pit, kayaks and canoe that you can use. We stayed in the master suite, which was huge with a huge bathroom that had a claw-foot tub and double headed shower. It was pretty cool. The other rooms appeared to have a separate bathroom from the room, but I did not pry too much to find out if this was true. One thing I did notice was that you could hear people in the neighboring rooms, because the windows were open. There is no air conditioning, but because it is on the water the room stayed nice and cool and air conditioning seemed unnecessary. Ted and Marie, the proprietors, were great hosts. They made a very simple, but lovely breakfast of Grand Traverse Pie Co. Quiche, yogurt, fruit, and freshly made muffins with orange juice and great coffee to drink. At breakfast on Saturday, we had a nice chat with the owners and some other guests. They also gave us some pie for dessert! The hosts really impressed me on the last night of our stay. We were on the beach deck drinking a glass of wine and enjoying the beauty of the bay, when Ted came down with some wood for the fire and helped us build a fire, then left us to enjoy it. He also had said that the paddles for the canoes and kayaks were broken, so he bought new ones while we were staying there and we were able to go for a really great early morning canoe trip prior to check-out time on our last day of our stay. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who is traveling as a couple or alone.

I shut the door to the bathroom when I went to bed (it was too late to go to the office since they were closed) since they are attracted to moisture but I did not sleep well knowing they were there. Other issues: The carpet was wet... not sure if they forgot to use fans to dry it after cleaning or what was going on with it. There were cobwebs in the windows and rust on the faucets. It was dark and dreary and had a weird smell. The bed was pretty comfortable though so I assume they invested in new mattresses based on some of the older reviews. I didn't expect a Hilton, but it was definitely substandard for the weekend rate of almost $200/nt with taxes. The weeknight rate was $99/nt. The next morning I told them I wanted to check out that day due to the gnats. They charged me for two nights even though I only stayed one. When I complained through email, the owner, Christine Allie called me names and threatened me! I guess since she didn't charge me for three of the five nights she thought that was fair. It's not fair if I only stayed one night. Please avoid this motel at all costs. Pay a little more for a reputable hotel. The hell I went through with this woman was almost as bad as the room itself! She's friendly as she can be when you call to reserve, but she turned on me when I wanted my money back for the night I didn't stay. I didn't even use the shower and only used two hand towels: one to dry my hands and one to kill gnats with. If you need to stay more than one night, pay cash in case you need to leave. Don't give them your cc info.
