Just Awesome... Because my dog is older and has a heart murmur, I was understandably anxious about the anesthesia required for her dental procedure and tooth extractions. Dr. Ruiz took the time to explain the entire process, including the pre-anesthetic lab work, the potential risks, and the pre-existing conditions that could complicate anesthesia. He was thorough and reassuring without ever minimizing my concerns. I also deeply appreciated that he did not pressure us into unnecessary testing. He respected our relationship with our dog's cardiologist and allowed us to obtain clearance directly from the specialist instead of insisting on another echocardiogram. Every follow-up visit was face-to-face with Dr. Ruiz. He never rushed us and always made sure our questions were answered. On the day of the procedure, I received a text letting me know my dog was ready, along with clear instructions regarding his medications and aftercare. Dr. Ruiz then personally explained what had been done, how the procedure went, and the discharge instructions, making sure I fully understood everything and had no remaining concerns. At a time when so many veterinary practices are becoming increasingly corporate, it is refreshing to receive this level of personal, thoughtful care from an independently owned hospital. You can feel the difference. Griffith Pet Hospital combines professionalism and excellent communication with genuine compassion--for both pets and the people who love them. Front Desk girls were polite and friendly however Dr. Ruiz was a bit aggressive with my cat and made him bleed when he was checking to see what was wrong with his teeth. While trying to figure out payment plans I was being rushed into making a quick decision about my cat getting a procedure done because they were busy and I was told I had 10 minutes to say yes or no and while I do understand that it's a busy pet hospital they shouldn't make people feel rushed and uncomfortable. Make sure you ask as many questions as possible before you go. While they do accept care credit they will only accept a 6 month payment plan which can sometimes be very costly when dealing with vet bills. Had I known I wouldn't have wasted my time and avoided my cat getting traumatized and paying for an unnecessary visit. read more

Great to be back with Dr. Ruiz after the VCA in this location closed down and we were temporarily with VCA Arden. Location wise great, and the staff are kind and responsive. They interact so well with our pup and prices are reasonable and non-corporate. They are open on Saturdays too and do great nail trims outside of scheduled vet appointments. AMAZING! Everyone there was super sweet and very attentive. We were able to get an appointment to establish care right away within the same week of calling. Check-in was quick and easy with the front staff and Dr. Ruiz was great at explaining everything. He took his time in answering our questions and never made us feel rushed. Dr. Ruiz and his staff were super patient with our dog even though she was a bit aggressive from the uncomfortable tumor she went in for. Fast forward to surgery day, we were able to schedule that within a matter of days. We checked in with no issues again and were re-explained the process that made us feel assured. This was a terrible place when they were Gateway and tried to do knee surgery on my puppy who didn't need it at all, had just hurt his leg. Years have passed and I'm trying to neuter a spay with a coupon they quote the same price with or without the coupon and when pressed why they are vague. Obviously care more about money than our animals. read more

Called to ask to get my dog neutered here and they did the surgery within the next two days. Surgery went great and everyone was very nice and informative. I felt comfortable leaving my dog there for his surgery. They said he'd be ready to return to regular activities after 5 days. I had a very negative experience with Dr. Ruiz and Alberto, the vet tech. I brought my chihuahua in because her appetite and energy were both down. I had previously seen a fantastic vet at this location who apparently no longer works there. Dr. Ruiz handled my rescue chihuahua roughly. Neither he nor Alberto spoke to my dog at all. His care plan involved prescribing an appetite stimulant and changing her diet from dog food to chicken and rice before looking at the results of any labs. He was unable to answer any questions about why this course of treatment made sense or what might be causing the change in behavior. Instead of continuing to work with this clinic, I brought her to Modern Animal in Los Feliz. They immediately identified her as anemic (which Griffith Pet Hospital completely missed) and sent her to urgent care where she was diagnosed with IMHA. Griffith Pet Hospital charged me a consultation fee for the visit and (more than a week later) has still refused to email me a copy of their proposed course of treatment for my records. The cost for their proposed treatment was roughly the same as the extensive work up that was done at Modern Animal, which included rushed labs. Despite the rhetoric coming from the front desk staff and Dr. Ruiz about how inexpensive their services are, they seem to lack knowledge and resources while charging a premium price. I trusted Dr. J. Ruiz with my dog's healthcare ever since she was a pup. I had a visit with him about having her teeth cleaned when she was 14. The next morning, he came out and warned me that my dog could die from the anesthesia because of her age when I was about to sign the release form. I asked him what will happen if I don't get the teeth cleaned, and he said they just don't get cleaned. He never warned me that my dog could get gum disease if I didn't get her teeth cleaned, which would require teeth removal. I told Jessica, who heard the conversation, to cancel the appointment. Six months later, I brought my dog in to see Dr. Ruiz and told him she needs her teeth cleaned because her mouth smells. He said she would be under anesthesia for 2 hours and would die, and that I would have to live with the smell. He never inspected her mouth for gum disease, even though the smell is a sign of gum disease. He also didn't recommend another vet. I finally went to another vet, and they did a blood test and cleaned her teeth. The only problem was that she now had gum disease, which would require teeth removal. I saw another vet in West L.A. who said it may not be worth removing the teeth because of her age and acted like it wasn't that big a deal. Months later, I saw a specialist who let me know the gum disease had gotten a lot worse. I immediately took my dog to Dr. Ruiz and had her put down. I realized a few days later, while talking to someone, that it all went back to Dr. Ruiz. If he would have warned me that my dog could get gum disease if she didn't get her teeth cleaned on the day I brought her in when she was 14, I would have gotten another opinion from another vet and had her teeth cleaned, which I eventually did. This would have allowed me to get the teeth cleaned a lot sooner, preventing the gum disease. Also, I brought my dog in for a hip problem a month before Dr. Ruiz put her down. After inspecting her hip, he tried to inspect her mouth. She pulled her head away from his hand, and he just waived his hand at her and walked away, never inspecting the mouth. Dr. Ruiz did absolutely nothing to take care of the health of my dog's mouth when she got old. He also never returned any of my phone calls. read more
