Not only did Hillcrest Pet Hospital provide excellent care when I came in, but they even provide, wonderfully thoughtful aftercare.

This was June of 2025. I had just moved into the area & was looking to find a new veterinarian for my dog. Unfortunately, we went in sooner than expected for a small emergency. My dog has formed a small lump in between one of his paws & it was leaking puss. I went ahead & called Hillcrest & the receptionist was able to get me an appointment for the next day instead of having me come in as urgent. Once I was with the vet, they looked at his paw & concluded that this might have been caused by a fox tail. I tried to explain that I didn't believe that was the case since I had not walked my dog around the neighborhood yet nor were there any foxtails by my home. They were pretty convinced this was still the case despite me mentioning maybe an ingrown hair or some other cause. The vet didn't really listen to my opinion & instead recommended my dog either be given medication or go under the knife. Personally, recommending surgery was a ridiculous suggestion in my opinion. It felt scummy. I went with medication, bandaging & cleaning his wound. It totaled to about $403. In the end, the bandaging they did on my dog gave him a new wound that required me to take him to a different vet 2 weeks later. Turns out, the initial lump was just a symptom of my dog having allergies! Condensed Version: -Staff: Super friendly & accommodating. -Veterinarian: They could do better in listening to the owner, especially before jumping to surgery. -Location: Parking in the area was terrible. -Price: Expensive, $403, they kept insisting I buy certain things despite me saying I already had something similar. -Overall Impression: I appreciate the staff willing to accommodate us at the last minute. However, my dog developed a NEW wound due to their bandaging so I had to take him to a different vet. Recommending surgery was a big red flag to me, turns out, it was just allergies! I would have a hard time returning back in the future. read more

Dr Kaspari is very kind and has a calming presence. She came to my home when it was that sad time for my German shepherd. This is the time every pet owner dreads. The whole procedure was handled peacefully with love and care. We could not have gone through such a heartfelt moment without her caring and expertise. I am so beyond grateful for Hillcrest. We have had multiple emergencies and scares with our dogs and they always fit us in asap and provide clear options and advice. Before Hillcrest, we had another vet for years - it could take days to get appointments, recommendations were unclear, and I always felt rushed. One of my dogs had chronic pancreatitis and we were constantly on medication, in and out of ERs, and felt helpless. Finding Hillcrest a few years was a relief. Dr K immediately recognized that my dog had serious food allergies - we changed him to vegan food and he hasn't had to be hospitalized since . They are kind and compassionate but straightforward and honest and will love your pets like their own. Dr K provides very clear financial estimates before proceeding so anyone complaining about cost knew what they were agreeing to in advance. They offered my beloved cat a quick appointment, when her established vet couldn't get her in for over a week. Thousand dollars later, maybe more, she still passed away. Dr. kaspari saved Cooper! My mini schnauzer had severe pancreatitis! After wasting $2000 at Montrose pet hospital with no result, and VCA asking for 4k-8k, I took cooper to Hillcrest. They did a quick blood test, then Dr. Kaspari administered 3 shot of PANOQUELL in 3 consecutive days and was cooper up and running. Hillcrest is very fair, honest, and competent. They don't oversell! This review is long overdue. I brought my pup here after he ate a sock. He was I think on the verge of by the time we figured out what was happening. We went to several other place that turned us away or tried to price gouge us knowing what the situation was. As a last resort we called Hillcrest, and they opened the clinic for us at a time when they would have otherwise been closed. They successfully did the procedure and the amount charged was very fair and I paid with a smile. The whole staff here is VERY warm and inviting. You can tell they ACTUALLY care about animals. The other places we checked out the staff were very cold and uncaring and you could tell it was all about money for them. I came here on a Saturday right before closing. They were kind enough to take my dog in as an emergency. +1 star They gave my dog steroids and sent me home with some spray to help heal his itching. The medication helped. +1 star The staff was nice, no complaints there. +1 star This place is expensive compared to any other vet I've been to. They gave me two different treatment plans. I ended up paying $500 for my dogs anti itch medication and the steroid injection. They nickel and dime you here. They have a fee for the needles they use to inject the medication. They even charge you the credit card processing fee (3%). That is petty and pathetic in my opinion. -1 star I recently found out that steroids are not the best solution for my dogs condition and I was able to give him non-steroid medication which is working just as well. The doctor also recommended I run a bunch of labs on my dog. They never talked to me about what else I can do to figure out his issues. She was going to charge me $700 total including the labs. I have three cats and I've had a couple of emergencies - each time I rushed in with my cat and was swept right in. I'm always treated with respect and they try so hard not to make my wait time any longer than necessary. My dog had diarrhea for more than 24hrs and it started to have blood in it. She still had an appetite and energy, so I thought I would be safe to find a vet that was open rather than an urgent care...so that I could avoid urgent care costs. My vet is closed on weekends, so I spent over an hour calling vets given to me by rec and found via yelp, and no one would take me! However, one of the vets that I called suggested this place. Telling me they took walk-ins and didn't turn anyone away. The -1 star is because I had to wait an hour past my appointed time before we were seen, but it also doesn't surprise me since they do take walk-ins and don't turn anyone away. So if you're in a situation like I was, then you appreciate that they are able to get you in. Hillcrest got me into an appointment within a two hour window from my call. Dr. Odet was very friendly and patient as I explained what was going on, and wasn't an alarmist. She was also very transparent with me about costs. It cost me $275 for the exam, meds and fecal lab tests. If I had gone to urgent care, it would have cost $175 just for the exam. I'm very grateful to this place for their open door policy. read more

Update: now have 4 issues with this place, Office kept calling my phone during work hours for a visit I already CANCELLED. was pretty clear when cancelling the appointment as I expressed my concerns with them at the same time. I'm guessing my concerns didnt go to the correct person as they couldn't even comprehend cancelling the appointment i did not want. This BUSINESS, and I say BUSINESS because this is not a "hospital" as they claim is appalling. The staff's lack of communication, training, knowledge of the services they provide need to be re-evaluated. Not to mention the owner's inability to listen to their consumers/patients/patrons and inability to take constructive criticism is beyond me. Steer away from this place. *pic is in regard to the vet's pretentious reply. New patient warning Had three main issues with this place, 1). the Dr. saw my dog for less than ten minutes, brought him in another room which i completely understand, however told me he needed one tooth taken out as it was wiggling, which if she had asked me or stayed with me during the consultation, I already knew at that point and could've told her as he had more than ONE tooth wiggling, contradictory to what the doctor was saying. -- basically paid $80 for the doctor to tell me what I already know and to even tell me the wrong thing. 2). I had asked for an estimate of the extraction and was given a piece of paper detailing the procedures, codes and price. Receptionist or tech circled a bunch of prices that were apparently needed for my dog but gave no explanation. Walking out of the place expecting a total $1000+ estimated cost, I tried adding up all the prices and NONE of them added up to the listed "TOTAL" price that they gave me. Tried calling the place to only find out that they add an unlisted "wiggle room" fee of $10-40. Thanks for being open about that in the beginning. Makes me wonder what else you're not being open about, and that's important especially when a family member's health is on the line. 3). and most importantly, got shouted at and was shown some weird type of aggression by one of the older receptionist for simply forgetting to pay! Called for the fourth time to bring up this issue and basically was told I was lying. At the end of the call, the supervisor/manager resorted into the typical "we're busy and we have a lot of patients" and continued onto say that maybe I misunderstood the situation. I think everyone in the waiting room who went to go look up at their heads to see who was shouting clearly understood it. If you're looking to get manhandled by their uninformative staff and get undermined and overlooked by your own pet's doctor that you should be trusting then this is the place for you! They are clearly trying to keep their old clientele as much as they can and don't bother about the new ones coming. And for the receptionist who belittled me, we all get you're under a lot of stress, we've all had those jobs. But considering you are the first face patients see when they are bringing in their sick and maybe dying loved ones? Have some professionality! adding onto that you're not JUST a receptionist, you're also their vet tech. I have been coming here for a year and a half and I THOUGHT it was a pretty good place until I contacted Nareena who has worked here for over 13 years and was office manager, to please get some dewormer for my 8 1/2 year old Pity. 3 days later I was given medication that expire d 2 1/2 years ago. When I called her to ask about this I was told that she spoke with Dr. Fries that morning and the Dr said that since my dog and I live in the streets, this would be fine. Are you KIDDING me, I called 3 other animal hospitals as well as the manufacture and they all said a very quick and infatic NO, DON'T USE. Dr. Fries I am absolutely amazed that you would put your good name out there for this. I am appalled that you and Nareena would even hand out medication that much expired. It was never stated that the medication was recieved from your office. According to the employee the Dr said this was a better choice. After he retired and Dr K bought the practice I was skeptical that she could meet his bar. 2 months ago I rescued my girl Lettie and I was obviously not quite comfortable with the dog when I brought her in for her first post pound check up. Dr K picked right up on that and has been absolutely wonderful in her support of Lettie and my new relationship. She has been treating her for a very stubborn ear infection, and always explains everything to me, discusses options and pricing (I'm on a fixed income). The staff is AMAZING. Fun, sweet, loving of my dog and helpful. (Lettie has a mad crush on Daniel.) For those of you long time Hillcrest clients, it's okay. We miss Dr Fries, but the new gang is great. read more

We used this vet a couple times but will not go back. Good: some staff seemed to legitimately care about our animals. Relatively easy to get an appointment. Bad: services and tests are very expensive. In some cases double what other nearby vets charge. They suggested way too many tests with questionable results that resulted in additional (incorrect) treatment recommendations. Second opinions at other vets did not support the expensive treatments or diagnoses suggested by this vet. In the end it seemed like a way to extract money for nothing and we felt burned. read more

They don't even deserve one star. Find another vet unless you just want to give all your money to this vet and have your animals go through unnecessary tests and medications. All their tests are twice as much as other local vets. Also, they seem to always have appt available...now I know why. No one goes to them! Below are the list of things she tried to gauge $$$ from us for when I brought in my 10-week old puppy. When I took him to a different vet, he came back negative for everything and no infection whatsoever. - Kaspari said he had an ear infection. $150 to flush the ears and put some otic treatment and we were told to come back in a week to recheck. When I went to a different vet, that vet told me his ears are fine. -Kaspari plucked all his inner ear hair without asking me first. Plucking the hair can cause skin irritation and then we'd have a different issue. She just nonchalantly told me that was done - Kaspari said he needs urine culture because the $80 urinalysis won't tell you if there's bacteria. What BS is this?! Urinalysis won't tell you specific bacteria, but it'll tell you that there are bacteria. She wanted to do this test bc he was peeing a lot even though I told her there's no blood and urine is not cloudy and he is not whimpering when peeing. She said we need to know which bacteria so we can treat it with correct antibiotics. This urine culture was $316. - Kaspari wanted to start my puppy on antibiotics. And I was confused. I thought we wanted to know what kind of bacteria is in his urine so we can target which antibiotics, now she just wanted to give him broad spectrum antibiotics?!?? The culture doesn't even come back for five days. This didn't sit well with me, so I cancelled the test and thankfully got a refund. - Kaspari called the next day and said that his $81 fecal exam came back with coccidia. She told us to start treating and come in for his $50 meds and then they'll have to recheck in a week. She also told us that we needed to treat our other dogs bc they interact. I told her we keep them separate and she didn't believe me. At this point, I no longer believe anything that comes out of this woman's mouth. I took him to a different vet with fecal exam half the price and they told me he is NEGATIVE for everything. After all of that, she told me I got a LEMON for a puppy. Wtf?? Why would a vet ever tell someone that?! So, if you tally up the cost with all the revisit she suggested and the $60 office visit, this vet would've gotten well over $1k for our lemon puppy AND our puppy would have been on unnecessary antibiotics and anti parasitic drugs. There's nothing wrong with our puppy, but some dehydration and constipation. That's it! I'm so glad we went to a different vet. Stay away from her. She will make you pay for tests and meds your pet doesn't need and have your pets on unnecessary meds. And, you will feel terrible for your otherwise healthy pet. read more

The prior vet retired, but why weren't any patients / clients (particularly those of us who've been bringing our pets to Dr Fries for years) not given any word or notification about a new vet and staff or a re-launch of the business? 1 star for the above (bc come on people!) + 5 stars for staff care of animals and vet knowledge and long history of excellence, as well as always being responsive = current average of 3 stars Will update once there is more interaction with the revamped version of this business, but if you go, bring your N-95 as no one in there wears masks (except maybe some other customers) and from the overheard talk of Ivermectin I would imagine the staff vaccination rate is low. read more

The only reason for one star are for the unfortunate employees who love animals. Dr. Fries retired two months ago, after over 40 years - we trusted him. He was fair, honest & compassionate. We had always refered all of our friends to him. I would now tell everyone I know to stay clear of Hillcrest - the new Dr. k was mean, combative, and verbally abusive. She made my mom cry and said we should take our chart and go somewhere else, as we questioned the lack of candor in the initial consultation. We were told our 13.7 year old Doxie needed a full set of x-rays and blood work to determine why he was sick. i inquired on getting the full set of X-rays prior to doing blood work, to see whether the extra cost of blood work would be necessary. Dr. K said it's like a puzzle you really need both to determine what exactly is going on. It could be something that wouldn't show up in the blood - so to complete to puzzle we agreed to both. When we looked at the x-rays - there were only two (a complete set?) the first full set of x-rays included his stomach, tail & half the table. Naturally i asked about his chest, lungs & heart. Would think this is more important than full tail & half the table. Dr.K said that would be an additional set for an extra cost. We were then told a full set of x-rays is only two views in the same area. Already well over $600 & not ready to walk away without seeing his chest & lung area. Dr.K got very nasty and sarcastic - & compared our small 16 lb. Doxie to a German Shepherd with a broken leg & said if you brought your Shepard dog in with a broken leg I would not do a cat scan of his brain. Had no explanation other than this for not including our dogs chest in the full set of X-rays, but rather had half the x-ray to include tail & table.. She said she was trying to keep the cost down & had already given us a discount since we had been going there for over a decade. I was told the X- rays would be sent to our email and only received one out of two full sets. The only findings were fluid in our dogs intestines - Without blood work there was no explanation as to why our pooch has fluid in his intestines. Yet Dr. K was happy to give our dog an injection of Cerenia - reduce pain also an antibiotic. Our dog did not appear to be in pain until after the shot was given. Badjer has been completely drowsy since that injection and fell over as he walked outside this morning. I regret bringing my dog here, and am going to have to find somewhere else to go. It's no longer a safe place to bring our furry friends. If you love your pet - I strongly encourage you find somewhere else to go. read more

I recently moved to the area from Burbank and needed to find a vet close by as my cats don't do well in the car. This vet was recommended to me by another vet and I'm so grateful for it. They were able to get me in next day, which was practically unheard of with our last vet. The front desk was super friendly and conversational, the vet techs knowledgeable and gentle, and Dr. Kaspari is truly an angel. Her passion for animals is evident in how she interacts with them.One of my cats has developed some sort of obsessive twitch that has started causing him to groom too aggressively, and after ruling out fleas, Dr. Kaspari recommended a range of different things we can try to determine what it might be/how to treat it. I never felt pressured to do anything and she made me feel at ease about whatever this condition might be. She also asked if I wanted to hear pricing before making a decision. Every negative review you read is true. The owner/main vet is up for money grabs. Insanely more expensive than all other vets around. I only came here because my vet was booked. $600 late unnecessary treatments when they really should've said - your dogs leg is broken and you will need to get this fixed by a specialist.
