An absolutely fantastic book store and game shop! Its got everything you could want: tons of different gaming supplies, a dedicated gaming space, diverse book offerings, and very friendly staff. I wish there was a place like this in my own hometown, but South Bend has a true gem here. read more

Griffon Bookstore is definitely a long ways from Artesia, California but I was compelled to write a review of this wonderful store. In South Bend for hockey and Griffon was across our hotel. Went on Small Business Saturday and if it wasn't for hockey, I could've been there for hours. I was able to buy a number of card games but had I more time, who knows. Griffon is a throwback to what a bookstore should be and is definitely worthy of your patronage. You'll definitely find a special gift for anyone on your holiday list. Happy shopping! read more

Went there to check out the role playing game section. The store has three floors. The main floor contains role playing games, board games, war games, and some other goodies. The bottom floor is primarily a used book store with some other things like VHS videos and other oddities. The top floor is where customers can game at. I showed up on a Saturday around lunch and there were three groups, totaling around 15-20 people, playing role playing games and war games. The store had a lot of fun things to check out. There was street parking outside and a nearby parking structure. The bathrooms are located upstairs in one of the game rooms which is kind of an odd place, but the building is probably 100 years old so not unexpected. If you're looking for new role playing stuff, they have a selection of the more common games like D&D, Pathfinder, Shadowrun, Palladium, and other popular games. They also carry some role playing accessories like dice, bags, and related board games. read more

Where else would you go for your gaming needs? I used to go here years ago at this location and at their old spot. Always friendly, helpful and a good selection of RPG stuff. What else do you need. I walked in to see if I could find the new edition of the Rifts manual and walked right to it. I then decided to check through the dice. I ended up grabbing a clear hollow d10 with a small d10 inside (to fill my percentile roll needs (why roll 2 dice when you can roll 'em at once?)) I've been by a couple of times. It's fairly small in there, and very quiet, but with a decent selection. I'm a board game person, which really only has one aisle devoted to it, but if you're a D and D or other tabletop game player there might be more of interest for you. read more

This place is nerd paradise. I don't do an awful lot of rpg playing, but I love highly strategic, German-style board games. When I'm in Griffin, I'm like a pig in shit (pardon the vulgarity)! They have an extraordinary variety, both of classics and of games I've never heard of. Or imports! It's amazing. Check out the sale games in the stairwell, too. There are some great finds there. Speaking of the stairs- they have an equally amazing selection of used books in the basement. Everything from fantasy to foreign language. If there is a store in the world that can be home, it's this one. I've been going (rarely 'shopping' but always ending up with something interesting) down to the Griffon since I was 12, and 18 years later, the owners still greet me (and all the other regulars) by name. I've gamed here for years, and still do whenever I'm in town on a Friday night (the game room is usually open until midnight). The basement is filled with all sorts of wonderful books. This is a great little game store that most people probably don't even know exists. Just like any gamer, we tend to buy all of our stuff online, but it is always nice to stop in and see what's going on in other towns. Great Gaming and book store. I love to go in and browse here. They have the games arranged by interest, type, and styles. I can bring my school age daughter and she can just as easily find things that interest her as I can. They have a very eclectic selection of books downstairs. There is a large playing area upstairs, and they host organized play for many card and miniature games as well as open gaming. Always something interesting to find. The couple that own the store are wonderful folks to chat with. I don't visit the store as often as I would like to, but I never leave empty handed. read more

A very unique place -- hard to have a bad visit. I enjoyed the military history books downstairs. Very good World War II book selection. The owner is very nice and will narrate what they have, help you, etc. The store is well organized and in good shape. I truly enjoyed my trip. Look forward to browsing and buying again. What a disappointment. We were ready to enjoy a quirky store and ended up getting nasty stares and cold shoulders from the couple I assume are the owners. No greeting; no offer to help us find something. Clearly we were not welcome and we ended up leaving quickly and empty handed. We won't return. read more

I was shopping at the bookstore the other day, and had been there for about one and a half hours, when I needed to use the bathroom. I asked the gentleman at the front desk where the bathroom was, and was told there wasn't one. I said that was a bit of a problem, since I was needing one right away. I was told to go to the Burger King and use theirs--I then informed the owner that I was going to purchase close to $200 or more of books, and could he not make the bathroom available. I asked him, will you be willing to unlock it for me? He said quite clearly, "No." I said "Really?" He said "Yes." I then asked him what he does when he needs to go to the bathroom, and he informed me that he was a "camel" and only needed to go once a day. I'm sure he didn't go the Burger King to take care of thingsl. At that point I left, and left my $200 worth of books as well. I will never shop there again. The owner seemed not to care. I guess business is so good, that he can be indifferent about his customers. I was absolutely amazed that the owner would refuse access to a bathroom to a customer. While I liked the selection of books the owner had, the customer service was terrible. Go instead to Erasmus Books or Bargain Books, or one of the other many good, courteous booksellers in the area. read more
