After buying many new supplies and plants for my new home in Carmel Valley over the past year, today I was disappointed to learn that Griggs does not stand behind their products. I went in with a $12.99 potted salvia that I bought in May, planted in early June, and had to pull out after it failed to thrive. In fact, it died, while the other new plantings did very well in the same garden area. I fully expected Griggs to take it back and provide a replacement, but no, they do not refund or exchange plants. Their reason: "We're a small family business." Uh huh. I've owned a small independent business myself, and I never, ever made a customer swallow the cost of an item that was not fully satisfactory. So now Griggs' pitiful little business will get just a bit smaller than they would have if they'd just given me another salvia. I'll be glad to drive another few miles to buy it from someone whose customer relations mean more to them than $12.99. read more

Although I've passed this place millions of times driving in and out of the valley, I recently went in for the first time and all I can say is WOW!! My husband and I received a gift card here as a wedding gift so we went on a little date to explore! There are so many varieties of trees and plants here. A gardener's dream! Plants you never knew you even needed can be found here! The staff is incredible and obviously love what they do, or they would not have been outside in the dead of winter so willing to help us in any way! There is a beautiful indoor selection with beautiful displays of more variety. My favorite were the orchids! This place also sells a variety of gardening tools and supplies to help your garden grow! Come visit sometime on a nice day and just take some time to stroll through the greens on the ground. Use your senses to Breathe in the fresh air, listen to the birds sing you new songs and check out the surrounding views! Breathtaking if you ask me! They have an excellent collection of plants and trees. However, their prices are exorbitant and their plants are not clearly of great quality. Also, they do not take any responsibility if the plant(s) die. Recently, I bought a few plants from there. One of them died within a week. When I told them, they blamed it on me and didn't give me a replacement. Later, I found in Home Depot the same plants for one-fourth the price. Also, the Home Depot plants are doing as well as their plants. So you can go and have a look at their collection, but shop around for better pricing. read more

This is not my local nursery since currently I live in Northern California, not Central California but my daughter lives in the area and I stopped by. It is by far the best nursery I have ever been to, EVER. They had EVERYTHING I have been looking for, for well, years. Also, the place is HUGE. Griggs Nursery owner has a great attitude about his plant buying and he looks for the best and it shows! Their selection is incredible, but the way they go above and beyond in their service is by far the best I have ever experienced! The is room and crook and cranny of areas in the nursery loaded with plants, pottery, anything one would want for their gardens. If they don't have it, they are HAPPY to get it for you! What more would I want in a nursery? Nothing. They have it all. Everything I want in a nursery and more. They work their butts off to deliver a place worth stopping in for and it shows. It's so beautiful my husband took multiple photos of the place on his phone because he was as taken with the nursery as I was. Griggs is superior to any retail nursery I've ever been to. I tell my clients they'll find no better garden establishment within hundreds of miles. I'm always amused when walking in and seeing an employee hold one plant container; turning it, looking at it in all directions to make sure it's been well cared for, trimmed, pruned, and fertilized for optimum growth. Each and every plant is cared for in the same manner. There's a real knack for good design all around the nursery, seen in plant arrangements with color and texture, fountains, pergolas, pottery, on and on. Beautiful plants, beautiful amenities for the garden and knowledgable friendly staff. The highest of standards go to Roberto, who always has an answer for all of my questions. I love going to Griggs nursery. It is a fun experience and love the flowers. This is place you go to to get a specific plant. It's also a place that has an enormous amount of plants available. Everything is so healthy and beautiful. They have plants most nurseries don't. They are very helpful with any questions you may have and will help you out to your car. It's more expensive than Home Depot but it offers so much more. We go to Home Depot for very basic flowers and plants but Griggs is number one. read more

This is the nicest nursery I've ever been to in my life. That being said, it comes with a price tag to match. I walked up with a house plant and a blue glazed pot, and it's was $93 -- just for the ceramic pot. They have stuff I can't find anywhere else. Local plants, exotic plants, trees. Today was my first time at Griggs Nursery in Carmel Valley. I arrived there one hour before closing. It started out well when the manager Ken helped me make a selection on 3 tall landscaping plants. I made a couple of calls to get daughter's (new homeowner) approval on the choice. She was at work and I couldn't get her on the phone. So I asked Ken if he could hold the plants a couple of days or if I could buy them and, if necessary, exchange them in a couple days for something else. He then, rudely, gave me the hard sell, saying no to both requests, stating there will be others who will come in and buy these plants tomorrow, and they will be gone. Well, yes, true, but Ken as a manager was too loud, abrasive and not showing any goodwill toward a new customer who is new to the area. I told him we were new to the area. A simple statement of policy in a lowered voice would do. Not manager Ken today. I left in disgust immediately at this manager's abrasive response. The employee at the checkstand who witnessed this apologized to me three times on my way out. I will never go back there again. read more

My wife and I explored Griggs Nursery for the first time and both of us were delighted. My wife was able to find flowers for our landscaping that were not available at any other nursery. I am a photographer and found flowers to photograph in beautiful settings with perfect backgrounds. There is even a waterfall and pond. I was able to photograph some flowers that I have not seen before and since I have been doing this for several years, that was exciting to me. And all the flowers are kept in perfect condition -- tended to with loving care. And the staff was friendly and supportive. Thank you Esther. After getting $2000 bids from landscapers and plans that I didn't like, I decided to go DYI and, with George's help, I got exactly what I wanted (and what worked for my lack of gardening skills) and had it all planted for $300! Griggs Nursery is a great place to start if you have a space you want to transform into a lush sitting area or garden. They have an abundance to choose from. If you are not sure what to do with your space they will help you design an area. Griggs nursery took a very small space at our Spa in Pacific Grove and transformed it to a beautiful zen garden outside the window in the pool room. Nice selection of plants and gardening supplies. I bought a nice plant here last fall for close to $300 and it died. They don't have a refund or replacement policy so I ended up eating the cost. The guy asked me to send him a picture of my plant and he would call me back with ideas about what happened. He never called. I am quite disappointed and will not be returning to Griggs. read more

Our church has large gardens and we are near Griggs. We have used them for years to help us. They have always been knowledgeable and very helpful. We bring them little branches or leaves and they will tell what we need to do. "You can buy the expensive spray, but easier and better is to pull those shrubs out." or "Don't worry.," or "Don't buy that now, Wait until spring." We really appreciate the straightforward, honest advice. If they don't know something they will look it up. We have appreciated their honesty, knowledge and helpfulness and being so reliable. we been shop here ever since we bought a home back 2013. the sales person George was always helpful and nice he's the one always taking care of us in the past. but this time we had a very bad experience with the manager. whet there for some plants and trees and ask to be held for our landscaping pick up next day it was accepting and approval. very next morning call them up to check see if our contractor had pick them up , over the phone this manger was so rude and upset with me will ask his worker holding plants without pay in full, so he decided have all the hold tag remove from all the plants. what a jerk and bad business person I had ever encountered, we had no trouble to pay for it first or leaving deposit, if that's was require at the time by the person helping us, so don't give me the bad attitude and making me feel shit and ruining my day also threated to sell our plants to someone else if no one show up right away. shame on him , I will never shop here again! read more

We were visiting the Carmel Valley area for a few days and stopped in because of the sign out front, " Olives 50% off", thinking that we'd grab something to go with our wine. Well, the olives were olive trees but no problem because I soon was walking around one of the greatest nurseries I'd ever been in. Fantastic selection, very price competitive, nice and orderly and a great staff. Left there with all kinds of great stuff for my garden back in the East Bay area and would certainly visit again when I'm in the Monterey / Carmel area. read more

Stopped here on a recent trip to Carmel. WOW...that says it all. This is probably the best nursery we have ever been to. Plenty of knowledgable help. Associates always moving thru nursery making sure plants are looking their best. And what a selection! We were limited to what we could buy as we only had the Acura but we will make the 2 1/2 hour drive from Los Osos in the GMC to load up on plants and accessories in a few weeks. I recently visited this nursery on a friend's recommendation. As an Alabama gardener, I knew nothing about gardening in California, and wanted to help my daughter in Salinas with her new garden. Jesus took my husband and me on a guided tour, patiently answering all my questions. The plant quality was exceptional, and beautifully laid out. I have been to Griggs several times making several purchases. In the times that I've had to use the restroom, they ONLY have porta potty's. The first time I used it, it was absolutely repulsive with poop, pee, toilet paper and literally crap all over the place. Being a farm girl, I just dealt with it in hopes that it was a one time fail on their part. But every time it is stomach churning, nasty and unbearable. I brought it up to the employees and they said that is the restroom they have and the waste company only comes once a week to clean it. However, there is a huge hose right outside the porta potty. Why can't they hose it down and do a little something? Why can't they provide hand sanitizer? Why can't they do more? I can not believe that the employees are satisfied with using those. It is a shame that the let a minor issue ruin this nursery and I can not believe they treat their customers & employees this way. It truly went from an enjoyable place to be to a stench of a place to be. I always support local businesses and do not mind paying more to do so, but I will be going to Home Depot from now on and paying 1/20 of the price to get the same thing. read more
