We have always had good service here with any of the rugs we've brought to them for cleaning. Recently, we brought them one of our largest rugs for service. It is a Persian hand-knotted wool rug that was made in the 1950s. It is both excellent quality and still in excellent condition. We love this rug, the colors and design. It was time for it to go in for an inspection and cleaning. The staff here is extremely knowledgeable about not only the care and repair of rugs but can inform you of the likely country of origin, age and value of your rugs if these things are unknown to you. I think the prices are reasonable but that does not mean they are inexpensive. But for high quality rugs this is the place to take them to be assured of knowledgeable care, handling, and repair if needed. There is a reason that high quality rugs hold up over time. They are generally made well to begin with created from sturdy and quality natural materials like wool and often are hand-knotted. Hand-knotting differs from hand-tufted rugs and it goes without saying is vastly different than machine made. A hand-knotted rug is woven by hand using a loom. The rug maker ties each knot of the rug entirely by hand. This is a labor intensive and time consuming but wonderful rug making technique. Hand-tufted rugs are made by hand using a tool. The rug maker in this case uses a tool to push tufts of material through the back of a cotton canvas. This is a quicker process and doesn't require a high level of expertise. In fact, as a teen I learned how to make small rugs in this manner. It was a fun craft for me for a few years. If well care for, a hand-knotted rug generally will stand the test of time. They are often handed down in families becoming in many instances more valuable and precious with time. It is important to ensure any carpet is cleaned regularly and professionally but it goes without saying that a hand-knotted wool rug should get specialized care. This is not a situation where one should consider a DIY approach or using rug chemicals from a can bought from Home Depot or the supermarket. We are fortunate to have Grillo nearby to provide the kind of care precious rugs/carpets deserve. They are very busy bees here...Once we dropped off the rug we were told it could take up to a month to get it back...and indeed they had it for a month. That was fine with is. This isn't slap dash service. During that time we were able to enjoy the pristine hardwood floor underneath the rug that we never see. Lol! Grillo has pickup and delivery service as well but since we have a pickup truck and thankfully are both strong, we were able to drop off and pick up on our own...(I subscribe to "use it or lose it"). One of the (burly) guys working here does come out to your vehicle though and with amazing deftness and talk about strength, brings the rug singlehandedly (I might add), into the shop as well as reloads it back in your vehicle at pickup. read more

I called these folks for an estimate. I originally spoke with someone named Pam who was nice, but then an older man got on the phone and was rude, dismissive and ultimately refused my business. I was trying to explain a particular cleaning concern involving mod spore exposure (not direct mold damage) and he accused me of "changing my story" in a way that was just bizarre. I don't know if this man has cognitive impairment or some sort of other neurocognitive personality change but the exchange was bizarre and upsetting. He ultimately said he would not clean my rugs. My understanding is that they have a good reputation for cleaning but this customer service experience was one of the worst I've even encountered. Downright hostile. read more

We needed several rugs cleaned, and found Grillo to be very satisfactory. The initial greeting and evaluation was courteous and professional. Our rugs were standard Lowe's items, not fine oriental, and it was explained that the backing might dissolve during treatment. As it turned out, we had no problem, and the cleaning was fine. Spots that were especially bad were gone. I will say that this is not a fast process. We were warned that it could take a month to finish the job, and it ended up being about five weeks. This was not a problem for us, as we were out of town for most of that time. We understand that some of the delay was caused by a backlog of business, so things may be different if their business is slower. The cost was appropriate for the job. Grillo's was right on time for both the pickup and delivery. They took a great deal of time, care and effort to place and replace the furniture. The rug was returned in great shape and the coffee stains were like they were never there. This was a very expensive rug purchased from Gregorian's in Newton years ago so to us irreplaceable. We decided to have our rugs cleaned and called Grillo based on a friend's recommendation. They provide pick-up and rug return and laying services, When our 3 rugs were returned, 2 were fine but the third, a runner, had considerable variation in color which wasn't there before. The 2 guys who laid it also felt like it was seriously messed up and took it back to the shop saying it would be fine after rewashing. I was reluctant to pay their bill with a rug needing to be recleaned but they insisted and I did. Although we were promised a call from the manager the next day it never came. The rug appeared rolled up in plastic in the lobby rather than properly brought up our apartment and laid down. It was still variegated. Grillo is my GOTO whenever I need oriental rug cleaning or repair. For the past 15+ years, I have brought my rugs to Grillo, and they have been able to clean them, improve the life of the rug and repair damage from my pets. Why is it that my cat has to aim and vomit on my white oriental? Or the puppy likes to chew on my livingroom fringe? No matter, they make it happen. Most especially, the original owner developed a pamphlet on how to clean various stains from rugs--don't use over the counter cleaners, they only damaged my rugs. Grillo's did a fantastic job cleaning our rug with extremely thick wool noodles. We contacted 5-10 other rug cleaners in the Boston/Cambridge area, and Grillo's was the only one that was confident that their cleaning process would be able to handle the thick shag of the rug. They have a 10% discount if you submit a quote request online. If you choose to drop off/pick up the rug, the fee is also discounted a bit. We purchased our rug from another person, and Grillo's agreed to pick it up from that person's house, clean it at their facility, and then drop it off at our place. We are very satisfied with the outcome! They also were able to remove a pink stain (the prior owner was not sure what caused the stain, nor how long it had been there) enough that I can't see where the stain used to be. read more

I've purchased rugs at a half-dozen Boston area stores -- including all the ones whose name you'd know -- and this one is the best. I've bought seven rugs there in the past three years, and brought all my others in for cleaning and better pads. This is not a fancy building. It's hard to find, the first time. But if you can find the South Shore Plaza, you can find this place. And no parking problem! George and Frank don't have fancy suits. They don't talk fast. They don't have phony going-out-of-business sales. Only rarely does George reduce a price, so if you are looking for a good haggle, keep looking. But sometimes, it seems, George is just tired of seeing that rug in the pile, and he'll knock a couple hundred bucks off. In other words, it has more to do with his relationship with the rug than his relationship with you. These are serious, thoughtful business people who love rugs. Make a Saturday morning outing out of it. (They're closed the rest of the weekend.) You won't be sorry. read more

I recently tried to drop-off a carpet for cleaning and ran into an unhinged company employee who refused to help move the carpet into the store. When I brought it in, he brought it out. Things went downhill. His reaction was frightening. I left the store and the carpet. The following day I called the owner of the business and he refused to deal with the issue. I have been having my rugs cleanded by Grillo for 12 years and every year I have been sucked into going back. The owner is the rudest, most abrupt person I've ever dealt with. I was 60 days over due on paying a $500.00 invoice (I was out of the country and had a financial problems at the time) I have probably given him at laest 10k of business in the past 10 years. Mr. Grillo called me probably 2 times per week leaving nasty, nasty voice mails telling me he was going to take me to court. What a miserable loser. I'll never, ever recommend them to anyone again and will tell all my friends to never use him again. He lost a great customer! Because I was late on a bill he knew I would pay?
