BOOM BIG OLE FIVER!!! I certainly must say that The Grindhouse is just swell! Golly gee the people are mighty kind and the cookies and pastries sure are something' outta this world! And I do love their coffee somethin' fierce, it's just so warm and delicious that it make my tummy smile. Yuuup!!!! That's EXACTLY the vibe I'm getting from this place, old school, not trying to be "Trendy" or "Hip" nor do they use high prices and fancy paper cups where you can proudly display a bright green logo as a "status symbol". Nope, none of that garbage here, just good coffee, pastries and teas. Here's the skinny: Family owned & operated. Easy on the wallet AND the eyes. OMFG the Chocolate Chip Cookies!!! Here's the fat: The Grindhouse is owned and operated by a brother & sister duo. I did talk to the brother though I didn't get his name #Fail, he is out of south Hammond while his sister lives close to the coffeehouse. If that's not LOCAL, I don't know what is... Each time I've been here the staff has been very friendly and willing to explain what all goes into some of the coffee concoctions that are on the big board of goodies on the south wall. The place is really nice inside, good mix of warm colors and dark wood tones. It has a very comfy couch area and the tables are nice too. Nothing too fancy but, currently there are some knit seat-backs that look pretty cool. I really like the vintage(looking?) coffee grinders on the half wall, pretty nifty. There's also a nice rack of tea that's displayed, I'm not a tea fan per se but, I'll eventually try some there. Price wise: it's perfect, it seems like they charge just enough to get a good profit while keeping it reasonably cheap for us consumers. My average amount spent per trip to the counter: About $6 or $7, which isn't bad at all. Just FYI - If you look at the pictures, each one I took fit's that price range or less. The Chocolate Chip cookies are FAN-FUKIN-TASTIC!!! I bought two a few weeks back to bring to the boss... I ate one on the way and... well since I didn't TELL my boss he had a cookie coming... I sure as hell ate that one too!The other pastries are good too. But, for me it's all about the Chocolate Chip Cookies. By the way, it's all made fresh daily... sometimes multiple times daily! It's nice to know that they care about the place and their customers enough to make more if necessary. Non of this "Sorry we're out" stuff. Guess that's it... This was my third visit to this wonderful cafe, and I finally tried something other than their perfect coffee. I can now attest to, aside from their flawless lattes, their amazing hot chocolate, delicious chocolate chip cookies, and borderline life changing "chicken sammich." It is entirely worth the like 40 minute drive from my house, and is completely reasonably priced. The decor is perfectly cafe-like, and their handwritten menu signage is charming. Everyone on the staff is friendly and personable, and the music is always interesting but never so insufferably loud that you can't enjoy the peace and quiet and the just perfect atmosphere. Despite being an Illinoisian myself, it is just excellent to see perfect places such as Grindhouse popping up in northwest Indiana. The area is becoming more of a cultural enclave everyday and this restaurant/cafe is the crown jewel in NW Indiana's culinary crown. Definitely a must visit for everyone in the area, and a worthy destination even if you are hours away. I can't wait to try everything else on their menu. read more

We were just passing through town, and decided to stop in for lunch. I had the Pulled Pork sandwich with steak fries and my boyfriend had the Haystack Burger with waffle fries. Awesome food at a great price! We played pulltabs and watched the Olympics on one of the many big screen TVs they have. The bartender was quick and friendly and the manager on duty and other staff members were as well. Nice, fun atmosphere. We will definitely come back here if passing through town again. Didn't feel like driving all the way to Spill the Beans for free wifi and a warm drink. Popped into Grindhouse Cafe, and ordered a soy chai. It was the Tazo tea that Starbucks uses. Grindhouse's version was not nearly as sweet as Stbx. I could definitely taste the spices. I do wish she'd used less milk. The music was an acquired taste, but the staff is so sweet. My dad and I stopped in here the other day for the first time after I had heard about it from a friend. He had the house blend coffee and I had a cortado, and we split a scone. We both enjoyed what we had very much. I will definitely be going back to try some of their sandwiches and have some more coffee. The shop is nice inside, and the staff are friendly. They have coffee flavors of the day and great looking salads too. I have always wanted a shop like this in the area because I really don't like Starbucks very and have similar coffee shops like this one at school. They have great sandwiches at good prices and have outdoor seating for when the weather is nice. The employees are friendly and helpful. Semi-hidden coffee shop in downtown Griffith. After reading such positive reviews, i had to come check it out. The vibe is laid-back and comfortable. The baristas/staff were very friendly and there were people of all ages enjoying the place (a couple elderly women were behind me knitting). It seems like a place you could spend hours at. I had a Pumpkin Queen (chai tea with pumpkin) and my husband had a Red Eye and this ridiculous sandwich he's still talking about a week later. It had jerk turkey, cola coleslaw and some other crazy flavors and was simply delicious. Coming from California, I didn't expect to find many cafes like this in Indiana, let alone the small town of Griffith. I was in Hammond, IN for a week long business training, and I went to Grindhouse every day for lunch (discovered on Yelp, of course). There was no reason for me to go elsewhere. There was a diverse menu of unqie sandwiches combos (the turkey crossaint I tried had apple slices in it that added a delightful sweetness and crunch), salads, and fresh fruit smoothies. The sandwiches are just right portion size, enough to hold a girl like me over til dinner, but not enough to put me asleep-the training did that well enough for me already. The atmosphere is quiet and great for studying or just doing work. One thing I especially enjoyed was picking out a different table to sit at each day; each chair had a different crocheted adornment. Not sure I'll ever be back in the area, but for locals and passerbys like myself alike, Grindhouse is a must-go! read more

i just saw this new cafe that opened and pop'd in to grab some lunch. i had the turkey sandwich and a scone. The scone was soft and super tasty! The turkey sandwich was amazing! It even had a bit of apple on the sandwich. I have never had apple on a sandwich before so i was skeptic, but WOW it was just amazing! The staff was very friendly and the environment was very cozy. They have VEGAN FOOD! Nice place, nice staff. Prices are not McDonald's, but then you get what you pay for (i.e. REAL food). Oh yeah, did I mention they have VEGAN food! It's a nice atmosphere with wi-fi. A couple of the entrees are vegan, and a couple more can be made vegan. Not just entrees, but also desserts, if you get there early enough. It's not on my beaten path, but I make my way there once in a while and LOVE IT!
