What an amazing deli. Open since 1964. Kind of in a bad part of town, but definitely worth the stop. One of the largest sandwich menus I've ever seen. I had the Smoky the Bear, which is Mesquite Turkey, Lebanese bologna, jalapeños, a chipotle sauce, cheese etc. that was to die for and on a pretzel bun. Also had their potato salad, which was amazing. All of the meats are sliced to order. They even have cabbage rolls on the menu. This is a great mom and Pop historical deli. Ok... this place is different. Not trendy not fancy but damn it was good. Menu is massive which is both a good thing and bad thing when its your first visit. Older neighborhood but friendly and warm staff You can get your sandwiches hot or cold and they have a seating area in the back. Lunch is busy! Every blue collar worker in a 8 mile radius on a quick lunch is there and either stands in line or is smart enough to call their order in. Food was great, prices reasonable and ambience is down home I really was impressed just wish there was more of a dine in option with real plates and bowls as I hate eating out of Styrofoam Definitely recommend it you want a nice lunch at a good price read more

This place has been here for 50 years...that should tell you something. If a beautiful decor, uniformed waiters, or any other prestige items matter to you please stay in the suburbs. But if quality ingredients expertly prepared by honest, local people mean something to Charlie's may be your kind of place. I remember my mother being sick when I was just a kid in grade school in the early 1970's. Dad would bring Charlie's deli sandwiches home for dinner. I love the Erie Coast Hoagie which has ham, pepperoni, provolone with Italian dressing and some veggies. They also offer 40+ other specialty sandwiches, including the "2 Pounder". Their cabbage rolls, salads, and homemade soups round out the menu. I just heard today they're starting to offer breakfast starting at 6:30 am. I want to try it. Also: I don't drink but my beer loving buddies say the selection here is pretty great. read more

Ok so I had never heard of this place but was looking it up on grub hub. I ordered cause the prices were reasonable. The potato soup had way to many thyme or something in it. The fries were just odd tasting. The sandwich, while it had a ton of meat on it, had a weird Mayo on it-could of been Miracle whip which I despise. I found this little jewel by random. This is the BEST deli place I have ever been to. The selection of sandwiches is huge. I had a ham salad sandwich on an onion roll that was so fresh and soft. The ham salad was fresh and flavor was on point. Very friendly staff and prices are beyond fair. The outside and even the inside is a little dated, but they have been there over 50 years. Dirty, dark, and dingy. Asked for lite mayo and mustard got no mustard or mayo. Ordered on wheat roll and it literally squished and pulled apart in my hand because it was so soft. Neither of us got turkey on our sandwiches. Just not good at all. Edited: per their response below, looks like I may have just stopped by at a bad time. Unfortunately it looks like I misread the menu and doesn't include turkey on the sandwich so can't hold that against them. To the manager, thanks for your genuine outreach and attempt to fix my experience. We were just passing through on a road trip for a quick bite but appreciate the offer for a re-do lunch. I miss delivering downtown and eating Charlie's 2-3 times a week. Just recently had a baby so was able to go back. Highly recommended and not sure if they have a "bad/nasty" item on the menu!! Excellent sandwiches, the stuffed cabbage rolls are awesome, and their German potato salad is divine. I've never eaten in the restaurant, usually I door dash as a lunch treat when I work from home, but the service is excellent even through the app, they always make the food as per any notes I add, I.e, add pickles, no mayo, that kind of thing. Went in today for the first time right before closing and got The Prego and a bag of chips. The sandwich was only 4.95 and it was way bigger than I expected! It was packed with toppings and was was so insanely good! The meats were so tender and fresh. First time visiting Charlie's, wow what a good decision. I ordered an assortment of food (not enough!) for my wife and I to try...everything was great. I ordered a cheeseburger, a cabbage roll, fries and the Charlie's special (since 1964). The burger was fantastic! The cabbage roll was equally good and the special was pretty good...it just wasn't my style sandwich, but I figured if its been around that long, I would try it. The quality and amount of meat on it was amazing for the price. the fries were the only weak link for me, but anybody's fries eaten 10 minutes after they are done and stored in a a styrofoam food service container will be equally below their optimal condition. They were still good, just a bit soggy due to the steam. I will still get them with the burger next time! They have plenty of choices for sandwiches and other things and I will certainly be back to try those. I encourage you to try Charlies if you haven't. Based on the line, I may have been the only one who hadn't tried it and ordered ahead! Bravo Charlie's! read more

This place is about as divey as they come, but the food is excellent. In the last 20 years of lunching there, I've probably sampled at least 1/3 of the EXTENSIVE menu, and could eat there another 25 years & still not try everything they have (slight exaggeration). Without exception, everything I've tried has been at least good. Most were far above that, though. My favorites: Cabbage rolls, the house salad with the red wine vinaigrette & sliced pickled eggs, hot potato salad, reuben, chili spaghetti. They also make a really good lasagna (I had this at an event they catered & wish they'd put it on the menu). You can actually dine in by waiting for your food & walking it to the back room. I didn't know that for YEARS & had only been calling in orders to go!! The parking lot is tiny, though, so it becomes an issue at lunch time when the line is often out the door. read more

It really doesn't get any diveyer than Charlie's. But this is hands down the best sandwhich place I know of in Dayton. My go-to is the Mariachi. I've never tasted a sandwhich to compare it with. Shaved beef, cheese, sour cream, peppers, all toasty and warm in a rye sub bun. . .My next favorite is the Cuban. But really the selection of sandwiches and possible fillings is so huge I don't know how anyone couldn't find something that suits them there. They also have salads, soups, a large selection of chips and munchies, some junk food and sodas and beers. I have been going to "Charlie's" for several years ever since "Charlie" owned it, great people and great food. I haven't been in to meet the new owners due to work schedule. ( same hours of their operation ) I was finally able to go today after my appt. and get a charlie special. I met the new owner Chris today. He was genuinely kind and has kept things the same with adding more. He took the time to talk to me and explained how he kept the cabbage rolls and adding Grill items. He mentioned he would like to add a small grocery type area due to Groceryland being destroyed by the Tornado. I feel this will be a great addition to OND, Chris seems to be very knowledgeable and willing to help others. My experience with him was superb. I wish him all the best in his future. First time in this place. I've heard from people it was amazing. It was dirty and the items on the bottom shelf of the meat cooler had mold. The owners dog was walking around behind the counter. And the daughter of the woman making my food was eating and sitting on the counter. Not to mention she kept rubbing her nose with her hand, wiping it on her pants and continuing to put customers food,napkins and silverware in the bag.
