The chocolate was better that average, worth consuming, but would've preferred some organic chocolate options. The Chai bar was very good, I love it was a collab with Great Lakes Tea & Spice in nearby Glen Arbor, would repurchase! Also tried the dark chocolate sea salt bark - expected it to have a noticible smoky flavor with the applewood smoked sea salt, it was too subtle/almost not there. The La Croix of sea salt. The happiest store in Empire! We have been fans of the grocers daughter, since it's inception and have watched approvingly as it has changed hands, but always has held true to its mission of making sustainable fair trade chocolates of the highest caliber. Our last visit we left with a selection of delectable truffles, some cocoa nibs Spicy bark, and of course, no visit is complete without its hot chocolate. Adorable boutique chocolate shop we got recommended that is a bit outside of Traverse City. We stopped and for a small shop, they have a large assortment of fresh chocolates they make in house. The owner was very knowledgeable and walked us through the different products they offer, and were helpful with navigating our allergens. We got some dark chocolate bars, spicy bars, coco nibs and a variety of truffles. The dark chocolate bars that had spicy seasoning was the highlight for me, as the contrast with the heat and chocolate was exciting. The truffle flavors they have our unique, some of my favorite I tried being the burbon whiskey, uzu and pear ginger. Its a bit pricey but this is a shop that does everything in house and you can taste the love put into their products. i would highly recommend stopping in for some artisan chocolate! read more

Artisan chocolate shops are great and all, but have you had a handcrafted fudgesicle?! Who knew that *this* was the perfect little treat after a long walk in the beach! Flavors come in both milk and dark chocolate varieties, so everyone can enjoy. Another delectable treat outside of Grocer's Daughter's chocolates is their dark chocolate chip cookie. It somehow manages to be both chewy and crispy at the same time. I split one, and, if I could do it again, I would have told my spouse to get his own. It's too good for sharing! read more

The very first thing we noticed when we entered the Grocer's Daughter is the absolutely delicious smells! It's a bright place packed with chocolate options and some nice seating. Everything is well labeled with types of chocolate (dark, milk, white), and there are a lot of fun shapes in addition to bars, truffles, hot chocolate mix, and a freezer case of fudgsicles in various flavors. We opted to try a selection of items: a milk chocolate Kilgore Trout, milk chocolate Sleeping bear, milk chocolate Dianne bar (caramelized almonds and smoked sea salt), and a milk chocolate orange fudgesicle. What a treasure of a shop. Their chocolates are out of this world. Extremely flavorful and just the right level of sweet. And don't sleep on the hot coco and chocolate chip cookies. This is an absolute must stop for us when ever we are visiting the area. I've also done mail order treats for Christmas and valentines presents. We have been visiting the shop since they were located on the south side of town. The shop has expanded over the years and is very well done inside. Quite honestly, everything went well. Our dear friend who lives locally, scheduled the tasting/class. Too much to get into... except to say, do it, you will be so glad that you did! Our only regret is that we forgot to take pictures!! Definitely want to attend the again, we will take pictures and take notes... !!! Our only suggestion would be to move class to a little bit of a quieter place, was very distracting for a couple participants in our party who have noise sensitivity issues. We were recently introduced to Grocer's Daughter by some friends. We stopped there recently for some hot chocolate on a cold winter's day. What a great way to warm up while we were trekking around on a day off from work. Very tasty selections, and we all had something different. And on top of that, there is a nice selection of chocolates for later. Of course, we were there during the days of COVID. Like many places, you call in your order (we did it from the parking lot), they make your order, and then it is brought out to you where you pay. It was a pleasant day so it worked out fine. I appreciate the way that many establishments like this one are working to provide great service without violating all the restrictions placed upon them. Very good chocolate, though on the pricier side. I can't believe I did not know about this place until now. A very good dessert / souvenir shop for when you visit Sleeping Bear Dunes. Their high percentage chocolate over 70% is a bit on the sour side. I think the 70% hazelnut sea salt was perfect. Smooth silky texture. The drinking chocolate mix is their chocolate chopped, not powder or chocolate chips that I've seen elsewhere, more homemade feel. The direction tells you to mix with hot water 1:3 ratio. But switching water to milk for a hot chocolate is definitely way better. They just opened a gelato store next door, and the chocolate shakes that a lot of people talked about is sold there now. Very rich, thick and creamy shake. Just a bummer that it doesn't come in a larger size, and they charge extra for the whipped cream. Absolutely loved it, perfect reward for a sunny hot day after a hike. Their truffles feel like the priciest things in the store, but I don't find them better than the rest of the chocolate bars. They're still good and worth a try, with many interesting flavors, but I personally like their other items better. The fudgesicle exceeded my expectation. It's like a frozen chocolate bar, not watery and very rich in flavor. I was a little hesitant with the dark chocolate fudgesicle, since it's vegan, not containing any milk, and I've had horrible dark chocolate sorbet experience. They managed to freeze their chocolate with a bite-able hardness without suffering the thick chocolate taste. Absolutely must visit if you are in the area. We were absolutely thrilled that we caught the is caught the bright green exterior out of the corner of our eye a and turned around in a neighboring business to come visit Grocer's Daughter. My husband had a fun time identifying all of the perennial edibles in the garden including yarrow, lavender and lemon verbena. The outdoor garden area is as inviting as the chocolate is delectable And includes brightly colored metal butterfly chairs and a repurposed ski lift turned into a bench. As soon as you walk in the door the aroma wafts your way and you know that you're going to give them all your money. My husband was thrilled with his cherry limeaid slushy made with real cherries and homemade whippec cream, and I was equally over the moon about my chocolate ice cream bar flavored with Earl Grey, cardamom and lavender. Store capacity is 6 folks, so I imagine they run a wait during busy hours but we got right in and out. read more

We love all things chocolate and have been fortunate to have tried a vast array of "gourmet" chocolates in our travels. In my opinion, Grocer's Daughter is one of the best! The small shop is very welcoming, the staff was super friendly and they kindly answered all of our flavor-based questions. We bought a coffee hazelnut bar, which actually survived long enough for a photo (see below) - and it was excellent. There were so many creative combinations of chocolate candy confections to choose from with an array of added dried fruit and nuts in many of them. But, the stars of our visit were undoubtedly the Fudgesicle and Chocolate Shake. They were absolutely out-of-this-world and were gone before we left the parking lot. My apologies for forgetting to take photos of them. My husband chose the dark chocolate fudgesicle and it was just that - a perfect dark chocolate flavor. They had lots of other creative fudgesicle flavors (I tried a friend's rosemary chocolate one - yum)! But, the Chocolate Shake - OMG! Imagine what seemed like frozen chocolate mousse then made into the perfect drinking consistency. It was not too sweet and had a perfect dark chocolate flavor. I don't mind paying more for high quality chocolate or coffee, but overall GD fell far short of my expectations. For example, if you're charging high-end prices like these, maybe have a carafe of cold filtered water for guests? Brace yourself as you approach Grocer's Daughter. It may not look like much on the outside but as Ani B states, it smells like heaven when you walk through the door. If you're lucky you'll see some gals behind the counter even melting down pots of chocolate and it'll smell even more intense. Oohhhh.... *Homer Simpson drool* The first time I came here was about 5 years ago. We were speeding by on our way to or from Sleeping Bear and I did a breakneck double take as we drove by shouting "CHOCOLATE!" as the sign passed my view. Needless to say a U-turn was made and I have been a happy customer since. It used to have a coffee roaster next door but the next time I returned the coffee spot was gone and GD had expanded into the space. And yay for that since the expansion means more yummy treats for us! Truffles of all sorts of delicious flavors are to be found here. From cherry (my favorite) to herbs like thyme, rosemary and basil, spicier ones like the fire log and the Mayan and caramels dusted with sea salt. It's not cheap but it is some of the best chocolate I've ever had. And I know chocolate! I'm kind of obsessed. For kiddos who like simpler tastes there are also a few molded chocolates like mice, frogs, and a few bars with toppings like dried fruit and nuts. They also sell mixes for hot chocolate and jarred treats like maple syrup and nut butters (not their own making but still tasty none the less). A real treat on a hot day are their fudgesickles which come in a variety of flavors that change on a daily basis. They're basically flavored ganache frozen in ice cube trays with a stick in them. And they're...amazing! My last trip I had the espresso--a dark chocolate with a coffee zing. The space is pretty neat. It's painted a cheerful bright green and has plenty to look at from. Clippings about chocolate to massive cocoa beans on a plate to show you were the delicious morsels you're munching on started out. Service is hit or miss. I've had some really fabulous clerks who bend over backwards to lend a hand to some somewhat aloof clerks who seem a little put off to be helping customers. But once you take a bite of those treats all of it disappears and that's what keeps me coming back every time I end up in the area. read more

The chocolate from Grocer's Daughter was amazing! We stopped here on our way back to Silver Lake after climbing the Sleeping Bear and visiting Glen Lake. We bought 13 truffles/caramels and some salted milk chocolate bark for smores. Every truffle we tried was delicious with the chai truffle being our favorite. The cardamom truffle and Maya caramel were delish too. And the salted milk chocolate bark took our smores to a whole other level! I will admit that we used homemade graham crackers from Zingerman's, but I"m not sure I can ever eat a "regular" smore again now that I've had the gourmet ones. The bark was worth the $7 we paid as you get quite a bit. Plus, the bonus is that it's thin enough that it melts perfectly for a smore (can you tell that I loved them?!). The staff was very helpful and knowledgable and the free samples are much appreciated too. I would highly recommend Grocer's as a stop on your up north Michigan trip. read more

Wow, this is a place like no other. The chocolates are so carefully and thoughtfully crafted (and taste fantastic too). I would come here again and again if I lived in the TC area but I'll buy online for the time being until I can go back. I talked to the owners and learned the story behind the chocolate, and that was even more inspiring. The truffles were my favorite, and the rich chocolate shake and chocolate chip cookie were wonderful as well. A few years back a chocolate store opened ("Grocers Daughter") and I try to make it in each trip we make. I enjoy dark chocolates (greater than 80% preferred!), and their offerings are top notch. This is a little slice of heaven tucked away on a lonely single lane highway just south of town. On another note... I have ordered online a few times, and over the holidays had a particularly excellent experience. Through a few short email exchanges Grocers Daughter personally delivered my gift to my parents home personally (they live very close to the store - not sure they would do this outside of Empire). The grocers daughter chocolate is charming, quaint, inviting, and has by far the best chocolate I've ever had. Every piece of chocolate we tried had flavor explode in our mouths. They have chocolate bars, truffles, caramels, etc. The chocolate is pretty reasonably priced for the quality. The staff was helpful, attentive, and very knowledgeable on the cocoa beans, owners, and chocolates. They even incorporated local ingredients in their recipes!
