I still think about the ice cream flurry even after returning home from vacation. Frankfort Dairy Maid does not do small portions. You can get a small and they will give you what would be a large. During my visit to Frankfort I visited Frankfort Dairy Maid two days in a row. It was unbelievably delicious. The ice tasted like it was homemade unlike what I was used to from my local ice cream shop. I was surprised by the amount of toppings they give you. Be prepared to wait in a long line because this is the place to be. Luckily the line moves really quickly so you have enough time to review the menu and be ready to order when you get to the front. The staff at Frankfort Dairy Maid are impressive. I observed them handle large groups like a pro and not skip a beat. They have a system that makes the ordering and receiving of your ice cream smooth. I wish they had other locations within the US because this would be my top ice cream shop. I highly recommend visiting even if you're driving through Frankfort because it's worth the drive. read more

Little ice cream shop next to Family Fare. We stood in a long and slow-moving line tonight but it was worth it. Lots of ice cream options on the menu but my heart was set on soft serve. They had chocolate, vanilla, twist, Dole Whip, the lemon custard, (a raspberry that wasn't ice cream) and this week's special, blueberry. They have seamlessly rolled into taking cards and started their own punch card reward program. When you plan your trip to this establishment don't be deterred by a line, the staff will breeze through the line and next thing you know it's your turn to order. Make sure to speak up so the employees can hear you above all the hard at work ice cream machines! After you pay, wait by the window to hear your order called out. Once you get your order, get to work, the portion sizes here are no joke and you'll need to focus to keep up with the licking of a cone! The flurries come 3 inches over the top so don't wait to dig in! For years I have tried to find a place that matches the rich flavors and service of Dairy Maid. I'm all for a funky local ice cream cottage, but our recent visit to the Dairy Maid was a bit of a bust. First, especially on hot summer nights, expect queues that don't move very quickly. However my excitement for their pineapple Dole Whip soft serve kept me in good spirits as I waited. Be careful to double check that what you ordered is what you receive, because I ended up with a coconut flavor instead of the pineapple. I didn't realize this till I sampled the cone back in the car, and didn't want to again navigate the long line to correct the situation. The coconut itself was artificial and had that Banana Boat lotion flavor. The much-lauded lemon custard also had an artificial note to it (not sure if it was lemon flavoring or the sweetener). On the sunny side, portions are massive (my photo is of a small cone) and prices are very reasonable ($2.00 for a small). They also seem to be one of the only shops in the region to offer Dole Whip, so hopefully I'll successfully try it one day... read more

Listen: Your rich Aunt Betty from Ann Arbor will probably try to persuade you to go to Kilwin's for your post-dinner summertime treat. Tell her that's exactly what BIG ICE CREAM wants you to do and take her to Frankfort Dairy Maid instead (OK, Kilwin's is good, too, but still...). This mom-and-pop stand won't win any awards for its flashiness and, sure, it's on the other side of town, but, dang, it's got some amazing soft serve and makes Dairy Queen look like a bunch of mini blizzard-peddling rookies. And seriously, DQ, stick to soft serve -- what's with the hot dogs and grilled cheeses? I'm already getting the equivalent of a big bowl of sugar, I don't need a side of cancer or diabetes with it, too. But back to Dairy Maid: For starters, if you get a "flurry" here -- Dairy Maid's answer to DQ's "Blizzard" -- expect that whatever size you order to, in reality, get the equivalent of the next size up. For example, a "small" flurry is heaped up so high over the cup's rim that it's more like a medium or large. Same goes for a "small" root beer float, too. Dairy Maid has different flavors of whip every day and loads of sundae and shake options, too. Even the pup can get a doggy sundae or cone if you want, but don't expect any similar treatment for your cat. And bravo if you convinced you cat to walk with you to Dairy Maid. I once tried putting a harness on my cat and he was NOT HAVING IT. One small warning: They do only take cash, so come prepared. read more

Dairy Maid is a great business. However, I have had good and bad experiences coming here. One example, is when I was waiting in line for a half a hour then I finally got to order, and they made my flurry wrong.
