I have to admit, I've never been to a Grocery Outlet store before. Having lived in places where these bargain markets didn't exist meant that I would go out of my way to check out and see what this is all about (#1). At least for Oregon standards, this reminds me of if Safeway and Winco somehow combined and this would be the end result. Prices are decent, customer service is subpar, and there is a good amount of everything. That's what I call a grocery store. Either this store is new or they renovated not too long ago because the outside looks nice. The interior makes me think of a newer Safeway but with a different theme and I appreciate that everything seems clean and organized. I even peeped the bathrooms and was impressed at how well maintained it was (#2). Their produce area was impressive for being a bargain store. I noticed a good number of local inventory from Oregon, as well as imported stuff from neighboring states at average prices. Selection isn't extensive, but again for a branded bargain store, it's pretty good. Lastly, I think the customer service is good about keeping the lines at a minimum and doing it with a smile. This has to be the worst grocery outlet I have ever been to. Most of these stores are pretty consistent and have a good value and easy going vibe. Not a single one of the twenty(-ish)employees we saw looked like they wanted to be here or wanted us to be here. No public restroom seems crazy to me for a grocery store, but not being able to help us find one nearby is unacceptable. I had to start naming nearby places to the cashier to even get a start of where to go find one for the kids. I understand stocking shelves is kind of a constant at a place like this, but it was impossible to fit the cart down two of the isles because of it. And we were treated like we were in the way while we had to walk all the way around to get around them. The most friendly and helpful person in the store was a food vendor that didn't work here. A lot of families are trying to stretch their funds as much as possible these days. I discovered Grocery Outlet early when I arrived to the PNW and am grateful for the savings they offer. You can expect to find quality goods at a huge discount, but their stock rotates and is not always consistent, so buy it while its there or risk missing out on a deal. They have a great selection of quality health & beauty products, if you're looking to find a great shampoo or lotion without breaking the bank. Their produce prices are highly competitive, and you can find some nice cheeses to go with that perfect wine that you'd be crazy to pass up! Most recently, my teen was stressing out about losing her phone charger, and I was able to replace it here for less than $9. Be sure you want what you buy, because they have a no return policy since Covid hit. I've only been disappointed a couple of times when I got home to find my raspberries were moldy and my avocados went bad way too soon. read more

Hello. Today 10/23/24 my caregiver and I went to grocery outlet at 299 D St. NE/ Salem, Oregon 97301. My Main question is are we not allowed to put money away in our wallet before putting the cart back? I was putting money back in my purse. and the Cashier Guy goes, "Sorry the cart doesn't belong there. Staring at me rudely until I did what he said. " He wouldn't let me put my change back in my wallet. When we were putting food on the counter to pay for it. He was rudely staring at my caregiver too. Like he was trying to stare her down. He was not to us. He was talking at us, not to us. Made me feel like he was a cult leader, it was His way or no way. He was rude and very disrespectful. He needs to be re-trained or fired. Well it's grocery outlet it's kinda clean definitely small compared to the one I usually go to.the staff is kinda nosey when I'm spending over 2 or 3 hundred dollars and they think you might be stealing when you never do.it kinda makes you not wanna go back the selection is ok.the parking lot is kinda small but well lit and around other businesses.i will go back but I'm not a theif you can run my clean record. Prices are great. But Female Checkers are rude, and I have had two of them refuse to bag my groceries in the bags I brought. We are supposed to be eco-friendly and bring our own bags, and they refuse to use them. They want me to pay for bags to have them do it. If they have a problem touching other people's bags, they should wear gloves. It is part of the job duties to bag the groceries. read more

To whom it may concern, I am a new resident in Salem, Oregon and found Grocery Outlet. I was paid on Friday, got my bills paid, and it is now Tuesday, so I wanted to treat myself to a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon. I went to the Grocery Outlet on Lancaster in Salem, Oregon, and purchased myself wine. They put it in your thin yellow, plastic bag, and by the time I walked home, which is a five minute walk across the street, the bag broke! There goes my treat. I went shopping at this store today, Jan 6, 2024. I have never been so disrespected! I have a service dog that weighs 10 lbs. I was stopped shortly after I got in the store that said she couldn't sit in the cart. I told them she was sitting on my purse. When I did comply with his demands he had a young "security" guy threaten me with calling the police. I took out my ADA card and told them they can't treat me any different than anyone else. I told him that she was on my purse and not touching the cart. He said I had to hold her in my arms or have her walk. I explained that she had to be close to me. I've had 2 surgeries on my right arm and elbow and can't hold her for long so instead of having her on my purse I put her in my purse. The guy said to leave or he was calling the cops. I told him I was leaving and wouldn't be giving this store my money since I've been treated so bad. A gal told me the owners name. Then as I was talking to a cashier, a young 20 something girl who was apparently the manager told me to leave. Yes, I was cussing because all except the cashier were treating me like crap. This is totally unacceptable to treat a 66 year old person the way I was. My service dog was very quiet during this. Security also said he could ask me what my dog does for me. I told him go ahead and ask. He didn't. I will not be back. I have a bad back, ptsd along with hypoglycemia among other things not that it's Grocery Outlet's business but I should be able to have my pup in the card in my purse and should not have been treated this way. I told security that my dog has to be close to me and he was so rude. He had NO COMPASSION or empathy! He should watch for people who steal instead of harassing me. P.S. Went to the store for the 1st time. At first I was impressed with the store appearance and friendly staff. I was taken back by the team member that told me that the store toilet room was out of service and that the employees have to go to the neighboring stores to use the toilet room. To my understanding this is against the law not to have working toilet rooms for your own employees to use. Shame on this store fire not providing the necessity for its staff! read more

I was confronted by a security gaurd saying i used an item that looked like a sample and was basically bullied by the worker and security gaurd. I am a poc and they both were white. The whole thing was so bazaar and made me feel so uncomfortable so I dropped my things and left. The woker yelled and me as I left. Yesterday (8-3-19) was my first visit to the Salem Grocery Outlet @ 2879 Lancaster Dr NE, Salem, OR 97305. It is located in a very busy retail corridor with a Walmart, Safeway, WinCo, Bi-Mart and Fred Meyers Superstore; so shoppers have plenty of choices (a good thing). I am learning that each Grocery Outlet is a bit of a treasure hunt / shopping adventure. This evening I was admiring the superb selection of beer and wine. Even the prices on the top shelf labels were super budget friendly. I could not decide what to buy so I purchased a gift card to use later or as a gift for my friend who is a fan of discount shopping and scoring super deals. I could not help but notice a shopper with a big Winco bag in her cart, so you know I had to ask her the "Big Question". The answer was yes - she does work at Winco and "please don't mention my name in your review." DONE. There was a $70K+ Mercedes Roadster in the parking lot and "yes" the owners were shopping inside the Grocery Outlet. I have been to lots of Grocery Outlets but I think this is the biggest and nicest, It has a great selection and deals everywhere. It is located in a strip mall towards the north end of Lancaster. The staff was everywhere around the store. So I easily could have found help if I needed (though no one offered). Really though I was surprised at how big and clean it was. My only complaint was the bathroom was closed(my visit was fairly late). Note I've been back. Store is nice but staff never says hello or asks if I need help, I am thinking about taking away a star. read more

It had been a looooooooooong time since I bought anything from GO. I stop in randomly when I'm bored just to see if there might be something interesting. There never is. Mostly the food is weird, scary, and overpriced. I don't understand how people fall for the "deals" here. They aren't deals at all. If you've ever been to Winco (or Fred Meyer) you know you can get meat, cheese, canned goods, frozen foods, soap, etc. for far cheaper and as a bonus? You know it's fresh! So a few weeks ago I stopped in to peruse and spotted a giant thing of Hellamans Mayo (the East Coast version of Best Foods). I considered it and considered it and considered it before I finally decided to take a chance. The price was good for the size (around $5.99). I get home and get into making something with mayo. When I opened this giant container I noticed the texture was weird--not like I'm used to--and when I tasted it--YUCK!!!!! Obviously NOT good. This experience just confirmed my suspicion that, contrary to what they advertise, their deals are due to over purchasing by local grocery stores but purchasing product near or after its 'best by' date instead. I emailed GO and have yet to hear back from them. I will NEVER return. read more

Thank you Grocery Outlet! I am now eating much more healthy than ever. I have lowered my meat and egg intake greatly. I'm not eating unhealthy snacks or junk food. I've greatly reduced by need for butter and dairy products. Though Grocery Outlet was always overly expensive it is now horrifically so much more than comparable supermarkets in the area for the exact same brands. In addition your meat and produce are nothing to write home about anyway often the produce is old and needs to be used immediately. Your bread is often stale and inedible. Also having employed several employees for a good six months who would ridicule people using Oregon Trail cards even after you had been informed by other employee's and likely many customers certainly showed no respect to your those many customers they tried to humiliate and embarrass. I haven't been to Grocery Outlet for a while, but once every blue moon this place has some great deals on decent food. Although I prefer the Front St location, this place has some decent goodies. I've found some good deals on greek yogurt and frozen food. I highly suggest you don't purchase any produce though, I've seen some weird looking mold and/or fruit flies around that section. As I was visiting grocery outlet, I seen a doormat rug. I took a picture of it to see if my son wanted it for the dog. As I finished, I was confronted by security and extra staff telling me how what I'm doing is wrong. No pictures allowed. My words are putting it kindly. We had been shopping in this particular location (2879 Lancaster Drive Northeast, Salem, OR 97305-1345) for about NINE (yes, NINE) years. The review below is 100% CORRECT, the owner is extremely RUDE. Only in my case, it's the old guy (white guy, white haired). Last month when we were there, my kids were playing with a ball at the toy aisle. One of them (my 3 y/o) threw the small ball at the floor and tried to pick it up. The owner YELLED (repeat: YELLED LOUDLY) at my kids, "Hey, don't play here!" Then he saw my husband who was next to them and YELLED (repeat AGAIN: YELLED LOUDLY at my HUSBAND!!!!!!), "Hey, watch your kids!!!" I was in another aisle and really shocked. I wanted to complain to one of the employees, I thought that old guy was the manager. After finding out that he's the owner, I decided that it would not do anything. He's the owner!!! My kids are well-behaved. They were playing at ONE spot at the toy section, and they dropped the ball accidentally!!! For YOU, the old guy, the owner: you could have shown some respect to your customers!!! Now you have lost us, one of your LOYAL customers for NINE years!!! We had always spent hundreds of $$ in YOUR store and we will never shop there anymore! We'll go to OTHER Grocery Outlet BUT yours!! Been shopping there a long time, great deals, interesting ever changing food, great staff, good organics section, always something new to try, almost always good value on yogurt, some very good cheese and here too some interesting ones come and go. Good deals on frozen items, frozen pizza, sometimes ice cream, frozen deserts, crackers, nuts, chips, lunch meat, fresh pasta, hot dogs, cleaning supplies, and they even have several kinds of good bread (on the top of the food chain). I had only ever been to one other GO (in Vegas - which was much, much nicer and included a meat department). This place was tiny! Out of my entire list of groceries they only had 3 things I wanted. And seriously, what's with 95% conditioner? Super weird. Quite a shocking experience. I don't understand these great reviews. I guess if I didn't have a preconceived list and shopped solely from whatever I could scrounge up then it may be a completely different experience. Since the ownership of this Grocery Outlet Changed towards the beginning of the year, I've been going back. I stopped going because every other time I went in, I was told to leave my bag at the front - sometimes after I'd shopped half the store and an employee noticed I still had my bag - a small day pack type purse. Haven't had ANY problems since the owenrship change. Until today. I barely made it across the threshold when I was told to leave my bag at the front. I said no, i'll be going elsewhere and left. I realize why they don't want backpacks in the store. However, this is the ONLY location where I'm told to leave my bag at the front. I haven't had issues at the other Grocery outlet in town, nor at the one in Albany. I don't carry a traditional women's purse. I won't be either. Yet, they are fine with 20 gallon over the shoulder women's purses and people coming in and carrying around their reusable bags. Just not an over both shoulders bag that maybe would hold 5 gallons of anything. I"ve been in this store with my sister who carries a traditional women's purse that holds as much as my bag does. She's never been asked/told to leave her purse at the front. I'm beginning to think I keep getting told/asked to leave my bag because I'm gender non-conforming. read more

If you have not been here in a while, check them out again. I just started shopping here again, since '06 when they went downhill. They are now renovated and much improved. I bought a 3lb. Pack of thick cut bacon for 9 bucks, some Philly cream chesse for a buck, ranch dressing packets 3/1.00 etc. In all I spent 22.31. I know from getting them at Wal Mart in times past that I saved at least 15 dollars on just those items. This means that for me, a low income person, I will save around 1200-1800 dollars a year in food costs if I get there better priced items from them instead of Freddys or Wal Mart. That really helps my wallet. Not everything there is much better priced so do your research, it really does pay to do it. Also to use decent coupons as it doesn't take much time and can really help also. I never used to, but I am glad I do as it helps cover my cable bill every month with the savings. read more
