When someone suggests a restaurant to visit, usually if you here the phrase, "...and it's in the same building as a gas station" you will usually disregard everything said before. This restaurant is the exception to the rule. It doesn't look like much on the outside but you'll make this place your new go-to lunch spot once you give it a shot. Groovy Beast has something for everyone, from basic lunch items to some for the foodie friend you always feel like you need to impress. On my first visit I tried the Cuban Sandwich with fries. The sandwich had a lot of flavor and was satisfying. The fries were crispy and just right when it comes to something yummy for lunch. It was served on a cafeteria-style tray which definitely made it different than your average restaurant. The Fried Brussel Sprouts were a great addition to our meal. The pickled onions and friend bacon on top were a great contrast. Service at the counter was very helpful and fast. They also have a great kids menu if your whole family is looking for lunch. read more

So I went to this place bc I was on that side of town and was shocked at how good the food was and how nice the people were. Fast forward to yesterday I took a friend and she was floored it was as good as it was - I live near mcadenville and she lives in Charlotte and without a doubt have no issues driving to eat here - the Quality of ingredients is great ! Breakfast can be bacon and eggs or a sandwich with that egg, bacon, hash browns, onion strings, bologna and the kitchen sink. Want a burger? Here is where you want to be. Get onion strings on it! Fried chicken? Get it onion strings with it. The Cubano? Ohhhhhhh there are no words. Mojo pork! Get the onion strings on the side! Yes, I love the onion strings. Need I say more? Feeling Philly? Went for the first time today, had a great experience. Ate in, we ordered with ease. As we sat down a flood of other patrons just kept coming in. We ordered a Harvest Berry bowl and Clubber Lang sando with fries. Both were amazing and we would order again. Attached is a picture of half the sand which but without the cheese or onions. It reminded me of something I would receive from Honey Baked Ham, very high quality! The fries were very fresh and crispy. Bowl(salad) was full of flavor and filling. Great pick for a summer salad. Took a quick look around and found "The Groovy Beast." With a portrait of Andrew Bordain overlooking the condiments and drinks station, I ordered a cheese steak sandwich, some fried mushrooms (with ranch, you can get onion something dipping sauce too, but I will try next time) and a sweet tea. Wholly mid day super meal! This is really good food made my some folks who care about the hash they sling. Mushrooms fresh, perfectly seasoned and coated with crunchy good stuff batter..no greasy, battered up overburden here! The sammich was pepper and onion goodness with chopped sirloin. Too much on the menu to explain, just go.. I need a few hundred more visits to take ti all in. read more

While the food was pretty darned good I'm not happy with how the lady came and told my husband and myself that the cook said they will not accommodate removing sour cream next time from the Philly cheesesteak. We honestly didn't feel too conformable being there and I didn't even finish my food after she came and told us that. If a customer doesn't want a specific ingredient in customer service for a paying customer you accommodate it. No harm no foul. If there was an issue adding instead the Buffalo sauce that you already have on hand then don't have those ingredients. Needless to say it will be the first and last time we ever go here. I'm a huge foodie along with my family and well sorry but this place didn't make the cut. read more

For $6 I got a bottle of water, 3 eggs scrambled, 5 strips of applewood bacon and a bowl of grits. Grits is not my favorite but with a little salt this was good. Local ambiance in the place, which is located on a gas station property. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you... in a timely way. What a shame. Groovy beast was a go to and favorite for over three years since we moved into the area. Super nice people and really fresh and delicious food. Unfortunately it's just a shell of its old self now. Really mean folks at the register and generally just underperforming on all fronts even when not remotely busy. If you question the cashier about the lack of complimentary ice water they will accuse you of trying to steal coke from the water fountain and try to charge you for "the cup". I wouldn't ask why because apparently if you do the super nice lady at the cashier will start yelling at you and tell you that unless you could afford it to get lost. We ordered over 40 dollars worth of lunch and though I was confused by the refusal of ice tap water I was not expecting to be insulted and yelled at. I also wouldn't bother trying to get the manager/owner because without speaking to the customer he will immediately defend said rude employee and ask you to leave. I actually took the nice lady's advice and bought bottles of water only to walk away and audibly hear her mocking me to her co workers. Nice! I've been here many times but won't be returning. It's not about the money to buy the cups - and it never was. It's about the utter disrespect you receive when you do much as ask a question. Overall dismissive and really terrible tasting food that's not worth the aggravation anymore. I give them six months with rude staff and dismissive manager owners. I appreciate managers who defend and take their employees corners. I don't appreciate a manager who will say he's busy manning the grill and refusing to chat with the customer to see what happened before assuming they are wrong. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. This is not a typical review for me. I dare anyone to take a look at my history and see how often I would go on here and hurt someone's business. These guys though - after todays experience I firmly believe they don't deserve my patronage or anyone else's for that matter. read more

Just had a spectacular lunch at The Groovy Beast. Carrigan, our waitress, gave us great recommendations and service. Our meals were a soft shell crab sandwich and a stunningly fresh salad of veggies and fruit with a marinated chicken breast and the best strawberry vinaigrette I've ever had. I the reviews for this place must be from the owners friends. The waffle hash browns were of the quality that you would expect from Taco Bell. The rye bread was hard and stale. Everything thing else was ok nothing special. I travel for work and frequent mom and pop type restaurants- usually friendly people. The girl taking my order seemed unhappy with her station in life. Groovy Beast - I finally made it. A few times a year I venture into a restaurant and eat something that truly surprises me and makes me wish I lived closer so I could be a regular. This is you Groovy Beast. I heart you. Normally I try to avoid saying things like "hidden gem" - but I'll be damned if this isn't a hidden gem. As others have noted - it's in one half of a gas station but 100% unexpected and 100% awesome. This one of those places where: 1) you tremble with glee waiting to dig in because everything looks and smells so good 2) you may forget to take pictures because of the first reason and don't want a picture of something with a bite out of it 3) when you first taste the food your eyes roll in delight and you curse out loud - Holy Bleep. The Taco Special was unreal - the chicken was super moist with some great toppings - add some Mexican street corn plus homemade Tortilla chips and Salsa. Whoa, heaven! Did I mention that I ate an entire basket of Fried Brussel Sprouts smothered with Crispy Pork Belly and Pickled Onions? Yup - I was wearing my big boy pants. Prices here are very reasonable for the high quality you get. Daily specials even come with a drink. Oh and they grind their own meat in house daily for their burgers. Love this place for lunch! Restaurant is owned by husband-wife team with all fresh and homemade food. A great alternative to fast food, as we love their fresh salads and soups. It is a little pricey (you get what you pay for), as the sandwich specials do not include a side, this is the only reason it gets a 4 star rating. All of the staff are devoted and work very hard. There is far more space but the design is wonderful and makes you feel welcomed and comfortable. Our food was amazing and our service was prompt and friendly. Shared parking lot on same building with a gas station, this maybe where yummy eats should be found. Fresh made hamburger WIth fresh assortment of toppings, the buns so so, but burger is exceptional with side of thin fries. Order at the counter and brought to your table. Super friendly staff, lots of locals. Sweet tea is good. Lots of deserts on the counter, we went for the banana pudding, good choice. Tip worthy is they do breakfast all day. Closed on Sundays. We were excited to try this spot because the food looked great! We got there around 11 am on a Saturday. It was busy, but we found a small table. We ordered at the front ($25 for 2 people). Our table was sticky, even though it had been sanitized. It made you not even want to touch it. We waited, and waited, and waited some more.... Several tables around us that arrived after us received their food. My husband finally went up and asked about our order. The ticket had never printed, so our order hadn't even been started. We were offered a parfait while we waited, which we declined because we were very hungry and waiting for our meal. The cook complained about having to make another order. Eventually we received our food (Wake up bowl-scrambled eggs/bacon/cheese/home fries and Burger with waffle Hashbrowns and a side of corn grits). The burger my husband had was good and flavorful. The corn grits were okay, but lacked seasoning. The wake up bowl was not good at all. Many pieces of the bacon were burnt, the only seasoning was on the potatoes. To top it off, I found a hair in my food. At this point I didn't even complain, and waited for my husband and toddler to eat and we left. So, of course we won't be back. And the older blond lady at the register has no customer service skills whatsoever. Not worth the $25 (minus tip) that we spent. read more
