Tried Groucho's downtown and the food didn't really impress me. The sandwich tasted like something I could have made at home and didn't feel worth the price. The house chips were also pretty plain and lacked flavor. The waiter was kind, but he didn't write our order down and my sandwich came out missing the condiments I asked for. He did apologize and bring them once I mentioned it, but it's exactly why I prefer when servers write orders down. The restaurant itself looked fine inside and the food came out in a decent amount of time. However, the atmosphere felt a little uncomfortable since the kitchen is visible and it felt like staff were watching while we ate. Decided to stop in here for a quick lunch after the downtown race this morning. It's a cute deli with an old fashioned theme and plenty of seating! Service was also quick and the guy that took our order was very polite. I was so happy to see vegetarian options on the menu too and got the veggie sub! The veggies also looked great and were clearly fresh and crisp. The sandwich itself was light, yet filling. I didn't feel gross afterwards, like I do with fast food. Homemade is much better! It was strange in that there was a puddle of oil on top and a piece of salami under a massive amount of turkey. My daughter and I had lunch here today. My first time. My daughter has had lunch here on several different occasions. She recommended that I try her favorite, the STP dipper so we both had the same. In all honesty, the food was good but not great. I saw many loaves of commercially bagged bread and none baked in store . Fresh bread like Subway's is for obvious reasons better. This eatery takes a whole loaf of sub bread and cuts it in half. They make two sandwiches that way. In essence you get half of what you'd normally get at any sub shop for the same price. The roast beef was tasty but it wasn't of the quality you would get with Boar's Head. My STP with a small bag of chips and a regular tea was over 14.00. A bit pricey for a half of a sub. None of this is significant enough for me to give this restaurant a bad review! As I said, the food was good and the employees who work there have fantastically great attitudes and personalities! BLTs aren't hard to make, and Groucho's Deli makes a relatively generous one, in a way. I had one delivered today via Hub City Delivery (love those guys). While I say that BLTs aren't hard to make, they can taste pretty bad when made by the wrong people. I'd hoped that Groucho's wasn't staffed by the wrong people. I think my hopes have been dashed on the rocks of life. I asked for mine to be on TOASTED white bread. Look at the picture. Does that look toasted to you? Do you know what happens when someone is lazy, in a hurry, or just plain incompetent, and rushes the toasting of bread (or can't be bothered making sure it's right)? It comes out looking and tasting STALE. I paid $9.29 for a BLT on AMATEUR-HOUR bread. Your people can't toast properly? Bread is the foundation of every sandwich (duh), and this one is no exception. Apparently they need lessons in basic toasting. Groucho's, DM me. If your management team can't manage to teach toasting 101, I can. Do better. The bacon was generous, even if it was way too crumbly. It had a solid presence without being too smoky. Kudos. The lettuce was there. There really isn't much one can say about lettuce. Not sure where the tomato was, to be honest. It was pretty absent, as in if it was there, it has zero flavor/presence. You need to up your tomato game for $9.29 per sandwich, because I didn't taste any. Nor did I taste any mayo/condiment. I had a small bag of spectacularly average chips with this disappointing BLT. I've had better Lay's chips, and I can't stand those. If you want seriously amazing chips, order Gibbles from www.shipmychips.com. You will never look at chips the same way again. No lie. Will I order from Groucho's again? Based on this BLT, nope. Such an easy thing to get right, and these folks can't manage it. Not much of a deli, tbh. Apparently Michael R from Groucho's can't handle a direct, specific review of his sh*tty BLT, based on his response which he probably won't be man enough to leave up if he gets push-back. He's not smart enough to realize that just because it's a first complaint in public doesn't mean others haven't been satisfied or won't complain in the future. And I didn't dine in, Mikey Einstein. I had it delivered. Had I been at your sh*thole establishment, I'd have asked for the bread to be toasted correctly, even if it meant showing your incompetent cooks how to do it. My review wasn't "unhinged." What it seemed to make is you, Michael, very defensive about your incredibly mediocre output. And it makes you, Michael, very obviously hostile about a deserved negative, public review. YOU have the problem here. I don't. Do you think you've made me look bad? I have been going to Groucho's Deli since I was a baby and still love it to this day. I especially love this Spartanburg location because it is close to where I live and I can always run down and get me a sandwich if I'm craving it. (which is often) They have excellent friendly, trained, and helpful staff to make your experience a 10/10. I always get the all white STP or the Apollo Dipper which is a toasted hoagie-like bread with hot turkey, and melted cheese on top (you can put ham or bacon on it too but I don't) and it is delicious. It melts in your mouth to were you always want another bite. I think all of their sandwiches come with a pickle, their signature potato chips and their signature "Formula 45" sauce. It is always clean inside and my go-to eating spot in Spartanburg. I have been to their other locations but this one is my favorite! Will definitely be coming back very soon!! read more

I feel unkind giving this place a 2 star but I've tried it without a good experience three times now. This place is physically unclean each time. The floor has that slightly tacky feel and the tables often have remnants of the last person's meal. Their three options are essentially cheese-based sandwiches with token vegetables added. The only way to eat vegetarian and dairy-free is to get a green salad with an oil-based dressing, pickle, chips, and olives. It is hard to mess up chips or a pickle but the olives had a really funky tasty that did not resonate with me. The salad was also very lack luster and drowning in dressing. This is a chain so I do not anticipate the menu items becoming more accommodating. If this place prioritizes cleanliness more, then it may be a good quick eats place for a meat-eater, but I don't anticipate ever going back. read more

This is a small sandwich shop that has locations throughout South Carolina and a few in North Carolina as well. When you enter the establishment, you seat yourself and someone will come take your order. Our server came and got our drinks immediately while we took a look at the menu. They have a variety of preset sandwiches or you can make your own. They also serve salads as well but I stick to the sandwiches. I decided to order the Mid East Special which is a sub roll filled with pastrami, bologna, salami, and provolone cheese that comes hot. The food came out within a few minutes and came with the famous Groucho's Formula 45 sauce on the side a bag of chips and a pickle. The sandwich was filled with meat and cheese but had no lettuce or any veggies in it. I wasn't a fan of the sauce on the side but most people tend to enjoy the Formula 45 Sauce. The sandwiches are decent and vary from 5 to 8 bucks and are nicely sized. This is an ok spot to get a quick sandwich bite if you want something cheap and quick. My wife's roast beef and provolone wasn't any better. The restaurant was quite busy; manager should have planned for that since it's Spring Fling. 2 stars based on food and not the service. I'm invested in downtown. I want to shop and eat here so please Grouchos let's work it out. Sparkle City needs you to improve the food. So if you go and it's not great slather your food in the Formula 45 sauce. It is delicious. 1 star for the sauce. 1 star for location. I'd go one more time for a second chance. read more

We have been regulars at this Groucho's since it opened. My wife and I are usually there for lunch once a week. The food is always good. Service is prompt, friendly and helpful. Many times they remember what we usually order. I am a big fan of the STP but have had many other menu items, all good. Just as a point of reference, I remember frequenting the original Groucho's in Five Points in Columbia as a student at Carolina.
