I ordered a large latte and received a drink that tasted like water that had been run through a coffee machine with no grounds. Totally lacked flavor! The pastry here sucks like their customer service. Snotty attitudes , they were not even busy no one there and they didn't even acknowledge us. They took forever and gave someone else our drinks then we had to wait even longer for them to make our drinks again. Just stopped in on my way through and have fallen in love! Lots of dairy and gluten free treats and amazing coffee. The best part, the ice cubes in my iced coffee are made of coffee!!!!! What a great place! We knew Grounds was opening up a couple of months ago and they had been doing their due diligence with the town Planning Board and other administrative chores. Well, they are open now, in the same place where we closed for our home after we arrived in New London, the old Colby Real Estate building. The place has been totally refurbished and remodeled to give it a Norman Rockwell feeling and it does indeed feel like a trip back to New England. Entering from the outside, the outside porch is a first welcoming part of the venue. Best on a Spring or early Summer or Fall day to admire the flowers and gardens. Once inside, the beautiful and airy inside porch has windows on three sides, comfortable seating and plants galore, giving the guest a homey feeling. Once inside Grounds, the beautiful decor is as attractive as the merchandise. Fine chocolates in the display cases, a massive jellybean stand with mixed and single-source jellybeans, a variety display and then, the piece de resistance, the coffee and pastries bar. Yum. The service is superb. A variety of syrups as well as dairy and non-dairy substitutes are offered to enhance the espresso experience. Grounds is a definite plus in our town. I've been a fan of Grounds since my first time at the cafe in October 2018. I can't make coffee as good at home as they do - and I know that's probably a me problem. One thing I'm happy to get every holiday season is an eggnog latte from there, though the nog certainly isn't fond of being steamed. My husband and I stumbled across Grounds while exploring New London today. For medical reasons, I have to eat gluten free foods. I'm pretty used to standing in bakeries and looking longingly at the displays of delicious creations I can't eat. On rare and lucky occasions, I might find a gluten free option hidden in the back corner of the case and I'll usually order it regardless of what it is just because it's something I can eat. When I walked into Grounds, I was absolutely overwhelmed by the selection of gluten free treats. Nearly everything in the case was gluten free. There were gf cookies, gf muffins, gf fig bars... there was maybe only one thing on display that wasn't GF. Everything was clearly labeled, and in addition to GF, there was dairy free and vegan options, too. It may seem ridiculous to say I almost cried seeing all the options, but honestly, I was on the verge of tears. I just felt so included and taken care of. For the first time, I didn't have to settle for the GF option. I could literally choose whatever I wanted. It made me feel like a valid customer. I was so excited, we essentially ordered one of everything, just to try! Not only did the experience make my day, the muffins and fig bars we chose were to die for! I loved all the fun displays inside Grounds! Candles, funky art prints, even pins and jewelry. There was a lot to browse as you waited. We ordered a latte and a whole wheat bagel with cream cheese. It wasn't super busy but the wait was pretty long. I actually thought that perhaps they forgot to work on our order. The food was good - really enjoyed the rich latte. The bagel was okay, they didn't put much cream cheese on it and I didn't understand how it took so long to make. Chairs were very comfortable so the waiting wasn't bad but I wouldn't stop in if I were in a hurry. read more

Grounds is still the best place for coffee, pastries and good conversation in New London. The staff are lovely and kind and the pastries are delicious. I've noticed that there are a lot more people in town this year than in the last few years. Sometimes, I have to wait a couple of minutes longer than in the winter for everything! But that is how it is all over New London in July and August. I try to be patient and kind this time of year. Friendly service but drinks tasted bad. Granted, we did order some relatively strange drinks. I had an iced mocha cold brew and it tasted sour/acidic. Not sure if it was the coffee or the mocha but something just really did not taste right to me. We also had a hot chocolate using almond milk... Have stopped here a couple of times and I have no desire to go back. Coffee flavors are simple syrups with lots of high fructose corn syrup. Not a fan. I want real coffee, not syrups!!! Food? What food? To the best of my knowledge noting is made fresh at this location. More expensive than I like to spend on poorly made coffee. Slow service, pricey... A good place to avoid. read more

This was the 3rd and "final" time I will patronize this establishment. The first time- the coffee was luke warm and they needed to heat it up, the second time was "ok" nothing great! the 3rd and final time was just recently on August 16 at about 9:30 am. The overpriced - stale corn muffin was awful and I waited over 13 minutes for just plain coffee (nothing fancy) until I walked out (without the coffee) vowing to never return. The girl at the register just kept taking orders while the "waiting" area just got more and more crowded. I'm sure the New London Fire Department would not have been pleased! If you have time to waste and want overpriced stale baked goods...by all means stop in at Grounds. If you want amazing, fresh, baked goods, awesome customer service, great coffee and it's Wednesday through Sunday ...then go to the Blue Loon down the street- will be so glad you did! read more

Best Coffee spot with great gluten free options. Good spot to meet friends!

I've bought coffee from Grounds 3 times, each time hoping my previous visit was a fluke, but no, it's bad all over again the next time.

We really want to like this place but have been three times in the last three days and each drink was bad. I first got a iced mocha with espresso and you couldn't drink it bc it was pretty much just milk with no mocha/espresso flavor. Next day, I got an iced matcha with honey and again lack luster - not enough matcha and way to much milk that it again felt like I was drinking lightly flavored milk. The final trip I got plain iced coffee and would add creamer at home. The coffee is so bitter even with added cream and sugar that it's undrinkable. My husband got shots of espresso over ice to make his own coffee like we get up near where we live. Not sure what beans they use but he also mentioned that it was extremely bitter and harsh to drink. We are here for a month and sadly won't be going back. read more

We've visited grounds many times before or after walks around New London. I like to visit local shops, but we will not return to Grounds. I've thrown away the last two coffees because they were terrible. The quiche is mediocre at best. The last straw was being griped at by Grounds for using the PUBLIC street parking in front of the building. There was an empty spot next to me, but apparently that wasn't sufficient. Wanted me to get my two kids and dog back in the car to move elsewhere. I moved my car. Permanently! read more

Awesome coffee and treats with a cozy waiting area make it the perfect one stop shop for caffeine and a little something sweet to eat

This was our first and last time here. The shop environment was crowded and disorganized. The staff was pleasant. The menu board was not easy to navigate, as the staff member had to explain how they put together an açaí bowl. Once we got our coffee and food, it was extremely subpar! I ordered an iced latte and it came warm, as if the hot espresso was just poured in and melted the ice. The açaí bowl was all blended together which was unexpected and tasted more like a frozen yogurt dish or a thick smoothie. A waste of money... We left very unsatisfied. read more
