This is the one place where I made reservations weeks in advance for our Grand Rapids vacation, and the most DISAPPOINTING. I think this place was mentioned in Bon Appetit years ago, but even if it hadn't, it wouldn't even meet my basic expectations. Pros: The atmosphere is super cool, with bar options and outdoor dining. Lots of street parking on a weekday. The appetizers we ordered (tuna crudo and deviled eggs) were excellent. Cons: The asparagus soup was TERRIBLE. It had no other flavor than just SOUR. With everything in there I expected something more to it. I only had maybe 6 spoonfuls and I was done. In retrospect I should've sent it back, but it was our last meal of vacation and I didn't want to ruin the mood. My entree was the tuna melt - it wasn't good either. While the bread was perfectly toasted, the tuna had almost no flavor and was overpowered by the cheese. I'd recommend either changing the cheese, seasoning the tuna mix better, decreasing the ratio of cheese to tuna...something. Service: It was just ok. There were two people at our table, and I was never asked if I wanted something to drink. I finally had to request a drink after our appetizers. The restaurant was empty except for two other tables, yet I found myself looking for our server a couple of times. Otherwise, he seemed nice. Overall, I don't understand the hype of this place. We ate at two other Cherry St. restaurants nearby during vacation and they were fantastic, with equally good ratings. Perhaps it was the time of day (lunch) or they were just having an off day. Grove just vaulted to my #1 restaurant in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area. A simply AMAZING dining experience!! Another word I used was "WOW!". My daughter and I chose the "Taste of Grove" option to get a variety of dishes. And...not to worry...you won't go home hungry, as the dishes ordered with "Taste of Grove" are the same size portions as if ordered individually. We celebrated my husband's birthday and the new (post 2020) Grove did not disappoint! The service from Patrick as well as the hostess and the rest of the staff was impeccable. When we were seated, there was a card for my husband's birthday on the table and later a candle in his chocolate cake - personal touches that we did not expect but appreciated. Wow. The meal I had at Grove last night absolutely blew me away. I wanted to choose someplace different for my birthday this year, and I've been wanting to try this place for ages. And boy did I make the right decision! Our waitress, Erin, was so knowledgeable about the menu and provided excellent service. I was a little overwhelmed by the cocktail list, but she was able to give me recommendations based on what I like. A Stormy Night, the cocktail I tried, was a mixture of dark rum, ginger beer, and other deliciousness. Not too sweet, and the ginger beer gave it a great aftertaste. I loved it. To start, we tried the sweet potato gnocchi and the hand pies. The hand pies were good and flaky with pickled vegetables that really hit the spot. And the gnocchi.... Oh. My. Goodness. It was the BEST dish I've eaten anywhere in a long while. Sweet and savory all at the same time, perfectly cooked... I will be back just to taste the gnocchi again. We were already getting full after the starter dishes, but still had to try the lamb t-bone and the rabbit and dumplings. The lamb was really good and cooked to perfection (nice and pink inside like it should be). The sauce was magnificent and I enjoyed the veggies (especially Brussels sprouts) on the side. Everything was mixed together so at some points I didn't know what was on my fork but I knew it would be flavors that were thoughtfully and artfully blended together. The rabbit and dumplings were pretty good, although it was more dumpling than rabbit as the pieces of rabbit were quite small. Still, the flavors were great. To wrap it up, I ended the meal telling my SO that we would definitely be returning, and he agreed wholeheartedly. The food was just too good, and service was spectacular. Yes, it's expensive, but you're getting what you're paying for in quality of food. The portions aren't as big as what you'd get at some places, but we left absolutely stuffed. They were gracious enough to move me to a table away from the drafty door when it became available. I was attended to by the bartender who was friendly and helpful. I ordered the Grove fashioned to drink and asked his opinion on starters ultimately ordering the ricotta on his advice. It was WONDERFUL. Not too heavy, the perfect ratio of salty creamy crunch. OK, so you who know me know I like it swanky, trendy and classy. BOOM! Nestled among cool Victorian and older homes turned establishments, it fits right in. You could pass it right by, but DON'T! The Shrimp n Grits... Not dinner but a delight for the light pallate. Creamy, savory and served hot! The recipie did not match the Menu before me, but so what! I missed the sesame and harissa, but loved the Al dente potatoes and herbs. Some might not like hard potatoes but the dish was tasty. Next, the Prosciutto Arancini. Delicious, although i needed an aioli to moisten and I did not see or taste one smidgen of prosciutto...perhaps I'll pass on these next time. The photo is of the artisan breads and "dips". Tasty but I expected a little more excitement. Sigh... Maybe I could have made better choice? Lastly, y'all know I "likes ma liqqa... They serve local Vodka and Gin... Who knew, eh?? We had dinner here and it was delicious. Yellowfin tuna crudo to start was light and yummy. Lacking in salt but still had good flavor. My husband is a burger lover and he couldn't resist it. The burger was on the smaller side but was a double patty. The milk bun was extremely light and he said it melted in his mouth. That made the burger a little different since a crisp bun always adds a little to a burger. I had the pork chop dish and it was amazing. The pork chop had a wonderful smokiness, the celery root purée was great. The sweet apples and pickled turnips were super yummy and added a lot to the dish but my favorite accomplishment was the jalapeño herby "sauce". The Swiss chard gnocchi was my Favorite!! It was sooo delicious and fun to eat. Full of flavor in every bite! I Loved it and so did my husband. The rhubarb tartlette with blueberry lime sorbet and a sweet creamy dallop... First time at Grove today. Arrived around 230pm and the restaurant was empty outside of 3 staff members. We were seated promptly and our server took our drink orders. Upon arriving with our drinks (about 1 minute later), he asked if we had any questions - we did not because the lunch menu had maybe 4 soup/salad options, 4 main courses, and 4 sandwiches. I ordered salmon and my husband ordered the burger with potato salad. I would say that the meals were plated lovely and the price was a bit on the high end but not unusual for the scene. The perk of being the only ones in the restaurant: extremely quick service! The salmon was cooked perfectly and came with a good portion of veggies. Did I mention the plating? Wow! My husbands burger, while looked small, was two patties and he said the sauce was delicious. I tried the potato salad and that was tasty as well. He asked for bacon on his burger and they came with a small plate that we shared. I would definitely give them another go, maybe at dinner next time. read more

It's been over 2 years since my last review, and I just want to update and say I'm JUST as impressed as I was back then. The management is AMAZING. The food is just as memorable, as are the cocktails. This place better never close or I'll be heart broken. I couldn't have been more impressed by my experience here. I was with a group of 4 total, and we decided to split several appetizers, entrees and desserts so we could get the most out of this restaurant. I'd like to start by complimenting our server, Danny. We called him "the ninja" because he would just suddenly appear with whatever we were needing without even needing to be prompted. He was attentive, efficient, and gave us great food recommendations. One of the managers was also fantastic, although I can't remember her name. Regardless, she checked in often and made sure we were well taken care of. All of our food was outstanding, and I'm not sure I could pick a favorite. The ones that stood out the most include the pork belly (holy cow it was amazing), the rabbit rigatoni and the duck confit. The butterscotch pudding was fantastic, but I could have done without the salted caramel dessert. It sounds better than it was, so go for the other dessert you are eyeing! The cocktails were also fabulous. I'm picky about my cocktail drinks, so they created one that would "suit" my needs, and they nailed it. (And didn't act as annoyed as I'm sure they were). Best Think I Ever Ate List: Dilley's Favorite Butterscotch Pudding My husband and I visited Grove on a getaway to Grand Rapids. We were thoroughly impressed with our dinner here. We started with the Shrimp and Crab Tostada. The color of the shrimp/crab filling was not particularly appealing, and didn't taste of shrimp or crab. However, the flavors of this starter were interesting and delicious. We followed with the Heirloom Tomato Salad. Again, the combination of flavors was innovative. The dill overtones of the dressing meshed with the distinctive flavors of the roasted broccoli and green bean - The sweetness of the heirlooms tied everything together. We tried the lamb shoulder dish as an entree. The lamb itself was wonderfully tender and had a delicious sauce. The dish was topped with a round of toasted bread, which had a bit of flavorful cheese melted on top. So yummy! As a second entree, we shared a whitefish dish. The fish was perfectly cooked, very light, and had that delightfully crisp bit of skin. It had a white cream-based sauce, which added a touch of richness to the dish, and an herbaceous green sauce that added zing with a touch of heat. I got the Salted Dark Chocolate Fudge for dessert because I love all things chocolate, and I was not disappointed. The chocolate was complex, and wrapped around a piece of tender challah. Candied nuts added crunch. Just loved this dessert! My husband got the Dilley's Favorite Butterscotch Pudding, and I almost like it better than my dessert. I've had many butterscotch puddings, but I think this one was my favorite. It had a layer of rich caramel that took this dessert to the next level. This pudding makes it to my list of, "The Best Thing I Ever Ate!" My favorite thing about Grove was all of the interesting flavor combinations. We will definitely be back. read more

For some restaurants, rare ones, you want that extra star, a sixth star. This is such a restaurant! Traveling solo, I stopped in, eventually ordering a gnocchi appetizer, a tomato salad, a sea bass entrée and for dessert a bread/cake with sharp cheddar cheese. Along with this cornucopia of great plates and tastes, I ordered a craft cocktail, bourbon as a base, which was as great as the meal. Describing the dishes may not be as useful as sometimes since they change items frequently. They feature what is currently best and available. I went with the three course offering and it seemed a good decision for a good example of their exceptional offerings. A special thank-you to my server, Megan, who after consultation, recommended the tomato salad. Think back to when you had that perfect tomato--years and years ago, before any idea of engineering food. Think of that taste, intensify it by 5 and then slightly vary it with different tomato varieties--now if you have that image, you get the idea of how good their tomato salad was. The Grove took his reservation and prepped ahead of time knowing it was my birthday with a little Happy Birthday note and a candle in my dessert. Oh but wait, I already skipped to dessert without giving you the rundown of greatness that happened before that. We each started off with a cocktail. I went with the Grove G&T and he went with the Grove Fashioned. Both were superb. I really enjoyed the light a refreshing taste of my cocktail and the booziness of my fiance's cocktail. They gave us both the regular menu and the vegetarian menu. They don't have anything specifically listing that it is gluten-free but they have TONS of gluten-free options or dishes that can easily be turned gluten-free. Another fun thing they offer is 4 hot and cold dishes for a set price or 2 hot and cold dishes and one main for a separate set price. (hot and cold are apps) They are both set at reasonable pricing which makes it easy to pick one of those offerings. We went with three hot and cold dishes and one main. Shrimp and Grits - super yummy, huge shrimps and great additions ingredients added in Deviled Egg Trio - I really forgot what all the topping were but they were all very tasty. Makes me want to make more effort to make my own deviled eggs at home and get a bit fancy with them. Asparagus Bisque - lots of asparagus flavor and didn't feel to heavy, very tasty and refreshing Duck Con Fit - Oh man, I seriously think I could eat this over and over. The ingredients were super fresh, creative and amazingly delicious. We ended off the meal with the fudge and mint & chocolate. Both a perfect way to end the birthday meal. The food missed the mark just a little. The ricotta toast was beautiful but the Chicken, Duck and Salmon dishes all actually had just one strong flavor overpowering the dish. The pepper purée overtook everything on the duck plate. The jus on the chicken was so watery it turned the mash and veg into a soup. Well, in a town of chain restaurants, it's nice to find a place like this. I tried the tasting menu and was glad I did. The first course was home made pasta and it smelled and tasted great. In fact, I ate it all before I realized I didn't take a picture. The second course was their version of clam chowder. That I did take a picture of. We had reservations but it was not too busy on a Wednesday night around 8 o'clock. The service is attentive and warm, we never felt neglected - our water glasses never sat empty. Because we had mentioned in our reservation that it was our anniversary, they sent a toast of sparkling wine to our table with a nice card. I started with the root vegetable bisque with shaved fennel - it was perfectly creamy and truly so much better than I expected honestly! I loved it. My husband had the gyoza in a rich broth with green beans and bamboo - I had to sample it and was pretty jealous I didn't choose it as my second course. It was phenomenal. For my main, I chose the seafood linguine - clearly freshly made pasta cooked al dente with huge shrimp and tasty pieces of sausage. After the soup and most of the pasta, I was getting full and we still had dessert coming so I had our waiter box up the rest of my entree. My husband has the ribeye for his main - he asked for it medium and it really came more medium rare but he loved it anyway. I prefer it medium rare and thought it was perfectly cooked. For dessert I had the butterscotch pudding with a shortbread cookie - so rich and amazing, I could only finish half of it. My husband had the white truffle ice cream with magic shell and while I am usually a big ice cream fan, it was not for me. He liked it though! After dessert I had some camomile tea. We had a lovely dinner at Grove on Saturday evening. We were visiting from out of town. It was my mom's first visit to Grand Rapids since the early 80s. Grove certainly left a positive impression and was the perfect dinner for our 24 hour visit. Our server was warm, informative, and attentive. The food was equally wonderful. We had the good fortune of being there at the tail end of restaurant week and enjoyed the savings associated with that. I loved the warm vegetable second course and the short rib dish were all superb. Hubby had pork dishes for all course and enjoyed them all. Jambalaya was great--well spiced. The Uptown Manhattan was good--a little sweet but tasty. Odd that there is no draft beer but there is a good selection of local small breweries. My mother loved the chicken breast --she ate it all which is a rarity. Handicapped access is a bit difficult. It's in the rear. There are a few parking places but it is hard to find. You need to go to the street behind and take the alley between the gray house and the next door parking lot (reserved for other restaurants). Really 4.5 stars solid. read more

Supposedly one of the more upscale restaurants in town specializing in farm to table fare. Stopped in for lunch so this review is based on lunch fare only. Atmosphere? We made a reservation for 11am on a Friday. Which, was not needed. We dined there until almost a quarter after 12 and there were no other patrons. Perhaps this is a dinner spot. Restaurant was nice and clean. Definitely date worthy place. Appetizers? The deviled eggs were good but nothing to rave about. Can't really mess deviled eggs up. The addition of the pickled celery was neat however unnecessary. Lobster hush puppies were good. You can definitely taste and see the lobsters. However for $15? It was quite expensive. The amount of lobster did not warrant the price. Food? Yes yes and yes. Pick three for $13. Probably the best deal in town for this type of lunch. You would spend more at Panera bread. The sandwich choices were plentiful as the salads, however the soups only had two options. The salads were seated as petites, however they are very big portions. My husband and I went to Grove last night for the first time. We've been wanting to try it for quite some time now, so I'm glad we were able to go on a weeknight when it wasn't super busy. Korin was our server, and she was incredibly pleasant, personable, and timely. We ordered a total of two drinks, 2 appetizers, 2 main dishes, and a dessert (see photos for reference). I'd be lying if I said it wasn't all AMAZING. The bread in the cheddar dip was my favorite aspect of that plate. It was doughy and you can tell that it's homemade. The variety of flavor in the hushpuppies was really interesting- I would never think to add apples, jalapeños, tartar, and lobster together- but IT WORKS. It was so good. The Swiss Chard Gnocchi did not disappoint- my favorite aspect of it was the pickled raisins. It added a nice sweetness to the plate without being overpowering. I only had a bite of my husband's Duck, but it was amazing!! The drinks, food, service, and atmosphere were all beyond wonderful! It's priced appropriately- you get what you pay for!! Gourmet food!! The Grove did our backyard wedding on a beautiful Saturday evening. We set one long table in the backyard for everyone and served their food (buffet style) from our adjacent 3 seasons room. We met with Jeremy & Hillary a couple of months before the wedding and their enthusiasm for how we wanted to do this was infectious. We didn't want things fussy and agreed to serve everything cold (summer evening garden wedding). We had cold sliced tenderloin with chimichurri sauce, spiced chicken skewers with veggies, salted beet salad, tomatoes & peach salad and some amazing pasta salad. Everything was better than expected and perfectly fresh and beautifully served. HUGE thanks to Jeremy & Hillary for making this meal so special and easy. One to remember. read more

Love the Grove for a farm to table experience. You can taste the freshness of the greens they grow in the back, if freshness had a definite taste. The inside is very formal but casual at the same time, giving it a more upscale feel, which makes sense with the prices on the menu. The pasta was cooked properly and squid ink gave it a nice flair. The duck confit was juicy, and skin was cooked just right. Customer service was a bit bland, but it could've been from how early we went and everyone was still waking up and getting ready to start the shift. Would recommend this place to anyone wanting to try a farm to table restaurant or a unique dining experience with new tastes. Was in town visiting my daughter at GVSU. We stopped in on Sweetest Day without a reservation. They were able to fit us in. Thank Goodness!! I gave Grove a 29 out 10!!! We had an amazing dinner! I had the potato crusted fish. Cooked to perfection and the pea and carrot/ginger-- oh hello my taste buds were in heaven!! My daughter ordered the Octopus. Excellent!!!!!
