So we just tried this place the today, it's tucked away slightly and caught it out of the corner of my eye. Looks to be owned by a mom and pop duo, the place is quaint and homey. They have the largest variety unique sodas I've ever seen !!! Looked to be mostly root beer and cream sodas ! I do t really drink soda but I was tempted ! I split the steak & cheese (philly) with my wife and got a turkey & provolone on wheat for the kids. It's a non traditional philly but excellent non the less everything was so fresh, thick cut meats & cheeses the bread was so fresh too, I love when the bread is that fresh. I really love to support local non-chain places and this shop is now my go to sandwhich place ! So glad I found and tried it. I'm super picky when it come a to sandwiches but let me tell you, this place makes the best sandwiches anywhere. I got a turkey with extra mayo, bacon, avocado and extra oil and vinegar. Definitely a mom and pop type of place and they're not real friendly but they're not unfriendly either, good service, great sandwiches, I don't know how many different types of drinks they have to choose from but there are a lot and not ones you would see in a typical store, i bought a root bear and it was super good. As you approach the building, you'll be greeted by sign that appears to say, "Cold Beer Served Here." However, a closer look will reveal that it actually reads, "Cold Root Beer Served Here." I thought this was pretty funny, but let me just say, these people are not joking about their root beer. They offer like a bazillion varieties of root beer along with many varieties of sarsaparilla, cream soda, and other beverages. When Matt and I went yesterday, we decided to get two whole sandwiches and each save half for lunch today, so we could swap and try both kinds. As we tried to chose what meat we wanted, the girl behind the counter recommended the combo, which is ham and salami, and also noted that the turkey was made each day by her mother. So we got the combo and the turkey. She understood that we each intended to eat half of each sandwich, so when I ordered the turkey without onions, she offered to make half of each sandwich without, so that I'd be able to try the combo without onions and he'd be able to have onions on his half of the turkey. I thought that it was nice of her to offer. Since my co-worker who had recommended the place also recommended Stacy's potato salad, I picked up a small container of that (after a bit of confusion, because the handwritten label read, "Stacy Patato Salad"). Matt chose a unique sarsaparilla and I tried a root beer called Berghoff. Our sandwiches were good, each was served with a pickle on the side. The turkey tasted fresh out of the oven, as promised, and while the ham on the combo was notoriously square, the salami was really tasty. Stacy's potato salad was a little onion-y for my liking, but that's because I don't like onions. When we were ready to go, they had the other halves of our sandwiches ready. Not only did they put the oil and vinegar on the side so as not to make our sandwiches too soggy, they also included two extra pickle wedges in a ziplock bag. Very thoughtful, in my opinion. And today? The bread was a little soggy but they were still great! I will definitely make an excuse to go out to Lemon Grove again. Maybe next time I will try the chili, since I noticed first place plaques from three consecutive local chili cook-offs. read more

This place is great. Having managed a deli for 4 years, I can really appreciate that they cook all of their own meat for the sandwiches (no meat "loaves" like most places use from Jennie-O, Dietz & Watson, etc), and use a good quality cheese. Having managed a deli, I also cannot understand why 1 out of 3 times your order is made wrong, but the place is good enough that I keep coming back in spite of that. The ingredients make the sandwich, and everything they use is fantastic. The bread is so fresh that if you order a whole sandwich (12", around 8$, a hell of a deal) you have to power it down quick. Otherwise the second half of your sandwich is getting stale by the time you eat it, because the bread is made so fresh and with no preservatives. For anyone reading this thinking that's a bad thing, you're high. I usually stick with their cold sandwiches when I come here, their hot sandwiches have only been so-so. The Philly steak is decent, but should just be called a steak sandwich; the pieces of meat never get broken down enough to be Philly-sized and are instead served in large strips. The meatball wasn't very good, the meatballs and sauce tasted like they came out of a TV dinner. The Italian sausage is pretty darn good though, and if I'm in the mood for a hot sandwich that's what I get. All in all, the place is excellent. As much as I wish they were more consistent about getting your order right, it's a pretty good indicator of how good the food is that they can make my sandwich wrong 1/3 times and I still come back and give them 4/5 stars. You could refer to the list on the wall that folks have been voting on, but what the heck do they know? Unless they've drank one of each and then made their selection, the data will be totally skewed ... I used to go to franks Deli in Imperial Beach when i was a kid...it was simply the best. After the owners retired they stopped making sandwiches and became a liquor store. When i found the Grove Grinder it was like i was a kid again. The Pastramis are exactly what i expect. I started taking co-workers there and they are always 100% satisfied with their food. What i like is that they have a card that they stamp to earn you free sandwiches. I usually pass 4 Subway's to get there...and im lazy! The only thing that i consider not-so-good is that they are closed kind of early, so late evening snacks are out. They do have a great selection of root beer and lots of Poore bro's chips. read more

The couple that runs it are very nice people, but the husband died a few years ago, so now it's the wife and her kids working in the shop. Very sweet people. Their selection of sandwiches is fantastic. Today I got a half of a sandwich: the James' Special: Ham, Salami, Pastrami, and Meatballs plus all of your amazing sandwich fixings. When I got the sandwich, I was STARVING, but it took me 25 minutes to eat it, and each bite was a question of whether it was worth the stomach ache later or to enjoy the flavor now. Well, the craving for flavor won. They've got all kinds of sides of homemade pastas and fresh salads. For beverages, you'll find a huge selection of different types of bottled root beer which you can rate on their bulletin board. And if you aren't into root beer, you will find bottled Orange Crush, old cocoa cola bottles, etc. etc. The ambiance has old Campbell's Soup knickknacks which are collections of the family. The hours they are open vary depending on the day, so sometimes you have to chance it if they are open or not. If you are trying to be careful with calories, at the bottom of their menus it says that "all sandwiches can be prepared breadless" which might benefit some, but for the rest of us, what's the fun in that?
