This was the first bar on our Haunted Pub Crawl to see. According to the tour guide, this bar was a barbershop with a flamboyant proprietor hundreds of years ago. Growler's Tavern had the best drink specials. I had an Apple Bush beer for $2-3. Service was fair. I liked how they had many play areas with games, fuse ball, video games, and pool tables. It was not too crowded. We congregated at a nice sitting area to hear the ghost stories and got to see the original door and area of the barbershop untouched. read more

Going to Growlers while I'm waiting for my table to be ready at Front Street Brewery is one of my favorite pastimes. The entrance is hard to find your first time there, because it is located in a basement. It has a chill vibe and is very spacious. Their draft selection isn't amazing, but they have a fair number of bottled domestics. They do standard mixed drinks, but this isn't the place to go if you're looking for craft cocktails. The service at the bar has been very speedy, though I'm usually there during off-hours. One time I came here during a Bloody Mary bar crawl and the drink I got was good, not great. The reason I like to pop in here is that they have Skee-Ball and pool. When I'm there in the early evening, the games are usually available to use. read more

I feel like a lot of locals may be judging me for this but I think Growlers is a pretty rad spot and usually my go-to downtown joint, at the end of a night out. First of all, it's "underground" which I know is common here but I'm still amazed by. Second, they've got games! Bring your quarters because they've got a pool, skee-ball and foosball table here, folks! The bar is in the center of the venue, usually with two bartenders roaming the sides and people crowded on top of each to get their attention... It's kind of hard to get a drink quickly here, at least after 10pm on a weekend. Their drinks are typical bar beers, cocktails and shots, though I've heard they do special creations for certain events. The bar itself doesn't have flashing neon lights or anything amazing but it's got spirit. The walls are brick, there's a since of American pride, some man-cave style decor and did I mention it's "underground?" Honestly, I can't explain why I like this place so much, it's kind of your average dive bar, but I always have a good time so why shouldn't you? Oh, and there's no cover charge, from what I've experienced! It's located on the main strip of downtown, Front St. with free street parking on the side streets and paid parking in garages a couple blocks over. Give it a shot, see what you think! read more

i Honestly really liked this place, and the vibe is warm and inviting, this is why I was shocked and appalled when I went to use the women's bathroom and a man barged in mid-pee, slamming on my door telling me to get out!! it was traumatizing. yes I have short hair, but I am a woman! I was horrified that this man yelled at me to get out, mind you HE WAS THE BARTENDER! So embarrassing! I felt so uncomfortable and I wish he would have been trained better to mind his own business and not assume. Really thought this was going to be a good speakeasy-type dive bar! It's in the basement so it looks quaint & fun, with pool tables, skeeball games & lots of TVs for Saturday football - great for 8pm on this past Saturday night. It's a weird vibe though because the mixed crowd was just strange, and it admittedly smells like a musty basement with cheap air freshener. There are ~8 beers on tap & a few drink specials. We ordered a round of drinks from the first dark-haired bartender & really loved the on-tap coffee shots (cold brew & whipped vodka) - unique & delicious. 3 shots, 1 beer, & 2 single high-ball pours of the coffee tap was $23 + tip. Unfortunately, our experience at Growler's Tavern went really far south when the Chipmunk-looking bartender that took 5mins to acknowledge us (there were less than 20 people in the whole place) and then belligerently argued with me about a drink. We ordered our second round: 2 double pours of the coffee tap & a beer, and he poured the same amount as the first drink but in a bigger cup, just 1/2 full. When we questioned him, he loudly argued with us & poured them into the high-ball cups to show us it was a little more liquid than the other (not even 1oz more) - definitely not worth 2x the price ($26 this time but for only 3 drinks). He said "I frankly don't give a shit what you think it should be because I'm the bartender & you're not". Such a pompous attitude & ZERO customer service skills... he could have handled this so much differently. There's a way to handle those situations & he certainly had no clue. I gladly took my business elsewhere. Hopefully the management acknowledges they have a terrible bartender with zero people skills & no sense of urgency to serve customers..... and maybe invests in a humidifier & better air freshener. Could be a much cooler place but it's unfortunately a swing & a miss. read more

This is by far one of the coolest bars in Wilmington and Downtown! The atmosphere and ambiance is awesome, not to mention they have games like pool and SKEE BALL! The Bartender's that are truly dedicated to their job and that bar, you can tell they love what they do! Of course, you are downtown where people drink copious amounts of alcohol and bar hop so the bartender's have no idea how much you have actually consumed and have to use their best digression when altercations arrive (I read the other reviews). And speaking of doing drugs in the bathroom..if people want to do drugs, they are going to do them so it's not anything to pinpoint at that bar. We have been to this bar so many times to play fusbol and never had an issue but today totally changed my opinion. Literally walked out of here 10 minutes ago- We came into this bar on memorial day around 7 with 5 of us, one of the guys with us is hispanic with a thick accent (the other 4 of us are white with no accents). Our hispanic friend walked up to the bar to order and was joking around with the bar tender asking "where are all the people" (the bar had 2 other guys in it) as a joke. Within 1 minute of us being there she said "i'm not serving him alcohol". We said "okay that's fine" he proceeded to ask for a water, in which she replied "Actually i'm not serving you at all I don't want you in my bar". this was beyond ridiculous and racist simply because she couldn't understand him. I will never support this business again and management needs to weed out their bad racist employees turning away money for no reason. read more

I came here for my birthday on New Years Eve and it was a mess. They did not have Malibu and the bouncers were rude as anything. Couldn't even drink because there was only cheap rum. This one bouncer with dreads instigated a fight between two guys and my female friend (sweet as anything) told them to please not fight. They instantly stopped. Weirdly the bouncer did not like that and got in her face cursed at her and threatened to kick her out. I just said "hey I'm sorry she doesn't mean any harm she just didn't want them to fight." Then he cursed me out and said he would kick us both out. He was clearly not having any sense that day. He eventually left and his other bouncer came and saw that we would be kicked out. But for what? Honestly kind of glad we did because we found a better bar with better drinks! Don't waste your time here. We were nothing but polite and they treated us with upmost disrespect.
