I visited on a Sunday for brunch and there was a long line, but it didn't take too long to order our food. You have to order and pay before your party finds their own seat. They have covered and uncovered seating upstairs and downstairs. You can also order Togo from the window on the side. Parking was kind of limited and tight in their lot but you can parallel around the restaurant if you can find a spot. I had the school bus breakfast smoothie and added spinach and a sweet potato biscuit with a fried egg; both were delicious. The biscuit was flavorful and crunchy on the outside (how I like it) and the smoothie was filling and sweet to my liking. On our last full day in the area and after walking around Duke University, we were looking for a nearby Southern-inspired restaurant and this one seemed to fit the bill. We arrived on a busy Sunday afternoon to find a rather long line to place our order. We didn't mind the line as it gave us time to thoroughly review the menu, but we were a little concerned that we would not be able to find a table. Luckily, my husband was able to snag one for the four of us. However, this system of standing in line, placing an order, getting a number, and finding a table on a busy day can be frustrating. I saw a server carrying a lot of food who was walking all over, looking in our direction, then going outside and continuing throughout the rest of the restaurant. She eventually came back inside with the food so we flagged her down and, yes, it was our order! My daughter and I were really happy with our meals! We each had the Towson Bridge ($8.29) - beer-battered shiitake and oyster mushrooms, feta cheese, sriracha ranch, and mixed greens on toasted ciabatta. Being vegetarians, this sandwich really hit the spot and it was super tasty! My son had the TREYmendous Burger ($9.99) which comes with caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, bacon and sharp cheddar, special sauce served on a grilled brioche bun. I come here often, generally 2-3x month. Today may be the last time I go to this restaurant. I always order my eggs over-Med and they are consistently a little undercooked. I generally just eat them, I don't like to complain. But today it was like they touched the griddled for a half second. They were completely raw. I sent them back. The next plate that came out the yolks were broken and eggs browned and crispy (they cooked the daylights out of them.) Apparently, the cook is feeling passive-aggressive today. I was about to carry them inside, but I was irritated. I just left, my food at the table, completely untouched. The bill is paid at the time of order. I was not going to ask for my money back. I just walked out. I hope they understood the message. I'll go elsewhere to places that get it right with consistency. The people behind the counter are very nice/friendly, hence I'm not leaving a 1 star. I can't believe I've not reviewed this place! This is as close as we've come to having a hangout in many years. We sit at the bar, which is usually open for 2-3 together, and chat with the staff while ordering and eating. Usually we're there for breakfast on weekends, which is served until 3 pm. I usually get the Rocket breakfast, which is 2 eggs, meat, bread, and either fruit or potatoes. It's always cooked to specification, whether scrambled or fried, toast or biscuit. Several of my dining companions have enjoyed their yogurt oatmeal bowl, served with fresh fruit. The Lovely Bride always orders a side of bacon with hers. I've also had their Jeweled Bird Sandwich on at least one occasion, and it did not disappoint. It depends on when you're there and what your tastes are. read more

Came to this cute little spot for lunch. I'm from out of town so I wasn't familiar with their location, but just a heads up it is counter service. I was a bit confused when we showed up but the long line of people really gave it away. Outside of that, the food was delicious. It was my first time here and I was not disappointed. The look is of a refurbished gas station-turned into an eatery. You order down at this window (take out or dine in). After ordering, you choose your seating - personally sat upstairs in the outdoor patio. Now for the food, I got the Mama's Big Bird (without bacon and pickles - yes, I know, that's literally bread chicken and cheese. DON'T JUDGE LOL) and still drooling about it as I type. Fried chicken can easily be ruined by over frying and leaving the chicken dry. Grub did NOT do this. The chicken was so juicy and perfectly spicy - cheese complimented well w it. Or come solo and sit at the bar with a few of the most beautiful use of breakfast carbs known to man... house made giant cinnamon rolls... I grabbed a coffee and a Maggie's Veggie Bowl and requested a sunny side on top. It's a beautiful presentation. Cheesy stoneground grits just had to happen on this trip! Love the selection of veggies, except the peppers, 1" al dente peppers seemed a little too fresh for this preparation. If they were diced, I might be all about it. Love yellow peppers, but this was a, not my thing situation. They could also use just a little more salt. Everyone knows I like some saltwater grits, but I don't need to add this much. I'm still giving them four stars. They manage their massive crowd slow and steady. Expect to wait, which can work out well for the indecisive. Take this review with a grain of salt, we ventured to Grub during peak Sunday brunch hours. The 3 stars is for the experience, the food was probably 3.5 stars. We arrived at 11:30 and were immediately confused by the line/ordering process. The ordering line was the entire length of the restaurant and it did.not.move. There was an serious lack of crowd control and I'm pretty sure everyone was confused- several large parties in front of us left after 5-10 minutes of waiting. To complicate matters- the online ordering was "not available". We were close to leaving until the bartender saved the day and started taking drink orders from the line. We had the cinnamon roll, scone, best bird biscuit and corned beef bowl- all of the food was decently good- but certainly not worth the 45 minute wait. We ordered online and did pickup on a weekday morning. Ordering online was very easy. The parking lot is tiny and tight, so watch for people pulling in and out. It was a little confusing when I got there since there was a line in front of the window. I didn't know if they were ordering or picking up. I didn't receive any instructions by phone or email about notifying them when I got there. Another patron walked up and announced his name and got his order, so I did the same. We enjoyed our breakfast orders -- good, filling, and reasonably priced. I believe there is outdoor seating upstairs, at least there was before the pandemic. Almost a top notch experience, but a few things could have been improved upon with the food. Each dish but one seemed to be just slightly off in a way that stood out compared to how good the rest of it was. First of all, love the design of this restaurant. From the physical beauty of it to how you order and refill drinks, gives it a great feel. The only thing, the bathroom door on the right sticks to the frame really badly! I had to tug my way out pretty hard, almost made a scene. To the food, my wife and I split a "best bird biscuit" because it looked and sounded so good. Ultimately, we came away disappointed by the VERY dry biscuit! Everything else on it, the chicken, pickles, honey... all worked wonders together, but the biscuit was dry and crumbly. I had the Pauli's pimento sandwich, and it was pretty good overall... but I feel like a different bread might have been better than a heavily grained bread. It muted the flavor of the pimento cheese and bacon a bit too much. The home chips it came with were perfection, as was the sweet tea. My wife's choice, the TREYmendous burger, was five star all the way. No complaints there, loved the combination of ground meats, you could really taste the short rib in the grind and it was well topped. Plus the home fries she got with it were golden and cooked just right. Overall, I recommend this place and would come back. A few tweaks could easily make it five stars. read more

A very cute, renovated gas station. We pulled up at GRUB on a Sunday morning around 9:30, we initially thought people were waiting to be seated but there is a super cute walk up window where you order your food and pay before finding a place to sit. We sat on the lower patio, which was comfortably spaced for social distancing. We waited in line to order for about 20-30 min but only waited about 10 min for our food. When our food arrived it looked amazing, the food tasted fresh and not overly seasoned or salted. The biscuits were soft and grits hot! A perfect southern breakfast! read more

Came to Grub for the first time to celebrate my friend's birthday. Amidst the COVID pandemic, the restaurant closed its indoor seating area, but there were plenty of outdoor patio heaters set up to make the outdoor seating area more comfortable in the North Carolina winter weather. Ordering is set up around the corner of the restaurant; afterwards, servers bring your food to wherever you're seated. The pastrami sandwich I ordered on gluten-free bread tasted delicious! The bun was beautifully toasted, and the sweet beet relish that accompanied the pastrami really stood out in this dish. Unfortunately, considering how much food I got, I wasn't exactly sure why I was charged $16, though I didn't bother to make it a big deal. I don't get it. The place was absolutely filthy, the food was sub-par at best, staff was rude, and I've never seen so many flies in my life. Between every bite, I was shooing the bugs off my plate. They allow animals which I can see that being a positive for some people but I'm completely repulsed by this. Getting there to park alone took 30 min. I was so disappointed and don't understand the higher ratings!! Ill also add I saw at least 3 other parties complaining that the order was wrong or that they completely forgot an order. There was a line out the door of people waiting to order. I'm not sure if it's typical, but it seemed they were only doing counter service. -We only had to wait about 10-15 minutes before we got to the front of the line to order. They gave us a number at the counter which we took to our table inside. FOOD/DRINK: -I had the iced coffee, cinnamon bun, and the Buckster's Hash Bowl. My partner had the Rocket Breakfast plate. -The cinnamon buns were huge and perfect. They were fresh, warm, soft, sweet, and with just enough icing. Truly just right. I was only surprised by their size because the woman who took our order asked how many I wanted so I assumed they might be small and ordered two only to find that each was almost as big as a softball. -The Buckster's hash bowl was absolutely delicious. Potatoes were the lightly fried, crispy kind. The corned beef was extra savory, not too salty, and cut into nice bite sized chunks that spread its flavor through the whole dish. The green onions, cheese, and tomato's tied everything together by adding some extra flavor to the bites without corned beef and some moisture to the dish as a whole. I also appreciated that the cheese was layered throughout the bowl rather than just on top. I also got it with an egg on top (an optional addition). I felt it would not have been quite as good without the egg's yolk acting as a savory solvent to the whole mixture. SERVICE: -The woman who took our orders at the cash register was very friendly and efficient as was the person who brought our food to our table. -When we arrived, it seemed like they only did counter service, but later I thought I saw one of the servers taking orders so I'm not sure. -We were given our cinnamon rolls right when we ordered, but did not get any silverware or anything. We thought it would be messy to eat with our hands and there were no other staff around so we took it upon ourselves to take some silverware and napkins from the server station by the kitchen. ATMOSPHERE/LAYOUT: -We got a table inside with the air conditioning. The inside was laid out a lot like a classic diner. Great spot for lunch! Everything is homemade comfort goodness. It used to be an old gas station and re-purposed into a nifty place to eat and drink. I enjoy spots like this where instead of tearing down an old structure to put up a charmless building they renovate and use it for a different purpose. What once was a gas station is now a chill spot with a great vibe for food and drinks. There is outside front patio seating, and even cool rooftop seating. Very clean with nice decor. We found the service to be terrific, and the food was delicious and filling at a good price. Their house made potato chips with dip were so good, along with the pancakes and biscuit sandwiches. Small but nifty craft brews offered on tap. Drawbacks are the small parking lot with limited spots. Another is the awkward ordering setup. Waiting on a long line to order in a small space by the front door, then waiting at the table for the food is kind of odd. Just have someone come to the table and take the whole order at once? Our first visit. My husband and I had the west end grit breakfast bowl and the Rocket. Both meals were delicious! We also had a Mimosa which was not up to our specifications. I couldn't hold and bite it how I wanted to. The bacon was cooked to perfection though. The wings had a great taste. The menu variety was fantastic - something for everyone; from traditional breakfast plates with eggs/meat/pancakes to perfectly fried chicken biscuits, to various hash/grits bowls. I got the buckster's hash bowl, which was flavorful and filling! The prices were also very reasonable, especially compared to all the other hip and new restaurants in Durham. Every so often, I wish for stars and a half to submit a review. I need half a star better than I'm giving. Grub has a great feel but there are a few niggles for me. One is Parking. A royal PitA if you get my drift. And why start off the review? Because the parking conundrum is the introduction to the Grub experience. and the knock off of one star. So here's the thing. The reclamation of a gas station and turning it into a munch place is a great idea. But if you sell good food, count on being popular. And if you are popular, count on traffic needs in a car based town. Where to park is a big problem. The Grub lot is very small and as I figure it, only one way in for a fight for a few spaces. And if you mess up. and or need to leave, you will be hell bent to turn left on departure unless the traffic gods are lenient that day because you were a good tipper. It would have been nice to have rejigged the parking to accommodate the traffic flow or more cars in the current lot. Ok now on to the food. Breakfast. The best meal of the day. Grits bowl (Maggie's Veggie Bowl: 7.99 Stoneground cheddar grits, mushrooms, spinach, peppers and roasted corn )was on the savory end and I've had it twice. I wish they had used more of the ingredients in the description. It seemed mostly stoneground grits which were perfect and fat fluffy creamy in substance was particularly light on the mushrooms spinach peppers and roasted corn. For the coin spent, I definitely expected more. If I remember correctly, the biscuits were totally worth the carb hit. I had the feeling both times I visited, that the wait staff are still working the bugs out of their operation. The ambiance is hit and miss, IMHO. The hit is the variety of seating. Inside and Outside up and down. I imagine in winter, this will be a bit problematic as there is more of the outside and less of the in. So that's the miss. There is a soda fountain style bar which runs along almost the whole length of the restaurant, booths are parallel so inside does seat more than you think. The days I visited, they were busy both in and out...soooo.... The other thing that makes the 4th star hard to grant is the LINE TO ORDER. There is something about the process that seems a bit convoluted and messy. Maybe the idea of having a wait person go around and actually take your order would make for a much more pleasant experience. Why? No place to stand while waiting unless you huddle up or snake around through the door. Having grumped a little, I'll definitely be back. Good breakfasts are hard to find. Vibe is great, food is great, rooftop patio is awesome. Business is largely mismanaged. The last 3 times I have been here over the past several months, the line is inexplicably long and time to order is extremely long. Like, it makes no sense, I don't understand why it takes 5 minutes per order to just place an order. The setup is order before sit down. Here is what needs to change. Problem 1. Menu's are not accessible to people waiting in line, leading to not getting a menu until it's your time to order, resulting in customer decision ordering delays (understandably). Fixes: 1. See model that Luna uses downtown. Ordering and pay before sit down for lunch. Menu is on the wall so everyone can see it. No awkward asking people to pass menu's around. The big open space near ordering with the photo is enough space to put the menu. Just do it. 2. Don't do order ahead. Use QR code's at tables for people to place their orders automatically AND pay. Post Covid, people are used to this. This brings your ordering labor to 0 since it shoots right to your POS. Have team members bring drinks and food right to table. Put a sign out front outside with a 'Order at Table, Seat Yourself' point upstairs or straight ahead for downstairs outdoor or inside. It is awkward and unnecessarily stressful to second guess, does the line wrap out the door? Should it wrap inside? Etc. Solve problem #1 and this is a non-issue. Problem 3. Person taking orders is also getting drinks. This massively adds to order time. Person taking orders, their goal should be lowest possible 'Time per order taken'. Fix: Doing drinks concurrently 2x's this time. Have a person bring drinks to the table within first couple minutes. Problem 4. Y'all haven't claimed this Yelp profile? Indicates modern systems and tech aversion which is indicative of these other system and process issues. Problem 5. Your POS system is straight out of the 90's. Better tools lead to better operations lead to better customer experiences. Also leads to more revenue and profits for owners. Also leads to busier business which is more hours for team members, and more team members. Fix: Setup a modern fast casual restaurant POS that has integrations with self service ordering systems, on demand delivery platforms, and inventory management systems, team shift management and payroll tools. Square Restaurants is a good solution. Problem 6. This is all unfortunate because the people are great, the place is awesome, food is wonderful. Your only hurting yourself by not allowing feedback from modern management tools and strategies. My guess is ownership is heavily involved in the business and are adverse to change 'because that's how they have always done things'. Good fried mushroom sandwich (the "Townsend Bridge"). The soup was so so and the service questionable. All in all a good lunch though.
