This is absolutely one of my favorite places to get a home-cooked meal when I don't feel like cooking at home. The family that runs this is so kind and the community absolutely loves them. You're always greeted with respect and a smiling face. The food is always hot and I love that chicken is cooked to order. The flavors are wonderful and not too overpowering. I usually get my food to go, but the dining room is always full of people, clean, and feels like you're visiting someone's home. Definitely a Durham staple and I see why.

Drove and hour and 45 mins just to eat at this place. And it did not disappoint! Turkey wings, rice & gravy, butter beans and corn mixed, hush puppies and a slice of cake. The food was amazing! The place was jammed packed. Customer service was excellent. People were conversing and enjoying their food. It was lunch time so it was very busy. The environment was a little noisy. But I'm sure they were talking about how good the food is. I know I was. 5/5

5 star service! This is how you do customer service right! We visited for the first time and loaded up on every side to try as well as the fried chicken, fried fish and meatloaf and peach cobbler and Italian crème cake. Collard Greens 2.5/5 Pinto Beans 3/5 Yams 2/5 Green Beans w Potatoes 2.5/5 Mac and cheese 2/5 Hushpuppies 2.5/5 Fried Trout 4/5- very good and not fishy even for someone who doesn't love fish Fried Chicken- 4/5 juicy, crispy and good flavor Meatloaf 2/5- red sauce meatloaf Rice and Gravy- 3/5- fluffy rice with good flavored gravy You get very large portions and I do think it's worth the price. There's no way I could eat even one of these meals by myself but I'm a smaller eater. Each meal comes with a main and two sides , a roll or hushpuppies, and a drink. They make their own drinks and the lemonade is really good but it's sweet so be prepared if that matters to you. Overall, we love the customer service here. This is a local business you should support! Next time, we will try the baked spaghetti. We would reorder the fish and the chicken. Both of those were our favorites.

Visited here one Tuesday afternoon and it did not disappoint. Ordered the fried chicken and it was piping hot and good. Had the Mac and greens and they definitely satisfied my craving for southern food. My husband ordered the fish and yep I helped him eat it. Nice guy at the counter threw in a piece of cake for us, since it was our first visit. The carrot cake was SMACK!

Absolutely loved my first experience at the Chicken Hut! From walking in, to ordering, and to eating was nothing but a great time. I was warmly greeted by the staff as they told me the meats and sides they had available. I went with their fried chicken and I was told it would be about ten minutes, but I did not mind waiting. For my sides I got their greens and Mac and cheese. Their plates also include either a roll or hushpuppies; so I went with the hushpuppies. And I am so glad that I did! The hushpuppies were the major highlight of my plate. They were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. With the hot sauce added it made them pop even more. I quickly ate most of them before my meal was over. The fried chicken was also amazing. It was not overly salty or seasoned and had an amazing crunch. It comes out pipping hot, so I had to take my time with each bite, but it was so worth it. The greens were light and seasoned well. I like that they were not super soft and had a great texture and depth. I could literally just eat their greens and hushpuppies and be so happy! The only side that I thought could use some love was their Mac and cheese. I thought it could've had more seasoning and cheese. It was a little plain. I love that the Chicken Hut is still here serving great food for 65 years! Their love for the community shows in their stellar customer service, fun atomosphere (the music was a mix of 70s/80s rnb that made me not want to go back to work!), and their warmth! I will be back for more food soon!

My first visit. Delicious food. Extraordinary service. I usually don't eat pork or like pork chops but my friends referred me to this place and it did not disappoint. I will come and try there other foods. Menu items change by the day.

We made a reservation and were seated upon arrival. Our host was Anthony, I think his name was, with a keen interest for ginkgo trees. He was very attentive, friendly and extremely helpful. He took her order and had some good suggestions. I was craving shrimp and grits which was probably the most unique shrimp and grits. I've had ever. Very distinct flavor and still very rich and familiar. The shrimp were large and juicy as well as remained crunchy overall cooked very well. We also had the summer tomato and burata salad which was really refreshing and delicious. My friend ordered the mac and cheese which is a hefty serving size. Definitely a shareable side or a main for one person. Our host came to check on us frequently, our Waters never went empty. Other hosts were also helping check in on us which was nice. The restaurant itself is large. Booth tables available, which made for a cozy environment. We ended the night with some brownie a la mode, which was the perfect dessert to have on a hot summer day. Overall the experience was amazing, great food and incredibly nice people. Definitely Miss miss the southern hospitality of Durham. Definitely recommend a try here at plum Southern kitchen & bar.

The menu had recently changed so we got to try quite a few new items. We tried the panzanella- sweet corn, red beans, heirloom tomato, patty pan squash, pea tendrills, and a roasted red pepper vinaigrette. This dish was my favorite of the night- small but shareable, entire dish was refreshing and all the flavors and textures went together so well. For dinner I ordered the roasted chicken and the baked mac and cheese with bacon. The roasted chicken was juicy and tasty, and a bit sweet with the bourbon ginger and plum reduction, but the mac and cheese seemed dry and overcooked. We also ordered the buttermilk cheddar biscuits- that taste slightly undercooked (in a good way), so the texture was soft and chewy (and amazing). The honey butter and large maldon salt granules made the biscuits perfect. They were so good we ordered a second order!! I would definitely return to Plum, for both the food and hospitality.

Quaint, spotless, Frank Sinatra & Sam Cooke playing thru the speakers, a lovely server & bartender, and the food... For mains, I had the Duck Gumbo with a side of collards & my friend had the Angry Yard Bird Mac & Cheese. Everything was an impressively elevated version of familiar comfort food. BUT, Y'ALL, we shared the fried green tomatoes for a starter. Now, I've eaten fried green tomatoes many times in many, many places. These were the best I've ever had. Hands down. No contest. The pimento cheese just takes them to an entirely different level. I'm sure I'll be thinking about them long after I leave NC. Ugh. Can you make friends with food and then miss it when you're away? Apparently so. For your own sake, get yourself to Lula and Sadie's and order those fried green tomatoes.

Great Food, Great Service & Definitely Worth Another Visit…read more We visited Lula and Sadie's in Durham around brunch time and were pleasantly surprised that we had access to the full menu. The restaurant has a warm, inviting feel. The tables are a little closer together than I personally prefer, but it wasn't busy during our visit, so we never felt crowded. Our waiter, Jack, was fantastic--attentive without hovering and full of great recommendations. We started with the mimosa flight and chose strawberry, orange, cranberry, and apple cider. First of all, these were generous pours! Every flavor was delicious, and I'm already looking forward to coming back and trying some of the others. For our appetizer, we ordered the Oysters Rockefeller, and this was probably the biggest surprise of the meal. Their version features a fried oyster with pimento cheese, and somehow the pimento cheese stole the show! I never would have thought to put the two together, but it absolutely works. This is already on my must-order-again list. For my entrée, I had the cowboy steak cooked medium, and it was flavorful, juicy, and cooked perfectly. The dinosaur kale was seasoned well, but those smashed golden potatoes deserve their own moment. Perfectly seasoned with sea salt and rosemary with just the right amount of crispiness--they were easily one of my favorite things on the plate. We also tried the pork chop special. The portion was huge and it looked amazing when it arrived. Unfortunately, because the chop was so thick, portions of it were very undercooked. The flavor was definitely there, but the uneven cook made it much less appetizing than it otherwise would have been. With the execution corrected, I could see this being a great dish. We added sides of potato salad and mac & cheese, and both were very tasty. By dessert, we were completely full, so everything came home with us. The strawberry lemonade Bundt cake was moist, flavorful, and not overly sweet--exactly how I like a dessert. The banana pudding was just okay. It didn't seem as fresh as the rest of the meal, and the wafers were already very soggy. So, is Lula and Sadie's a perfect 5/5 for me? Not quite yet. The undercooked pork chop and banana pudding kept it from getting there. But overall, we had a really enjoyable dining experience with several standout dishes and excellent service. We'll absolutely be back--if for nothing else, I need another mimosa flight and those Oysters Rockefeller! But really, I'm looking forward to eating my way through more of the menu.

This new East Durham location is a little smaller than the old one, but they kept the brick aesthetic and the same jazz décor; it has great vibes, but it can get a little noisy with large groups. They now have a small parking lot. The new building has charm, although the surrounding area feels industrial and somewhat run-down. One of the restaurant's windows was boarded up, broken glass had spread into the parking-lot entrance, and barbed wire was visible from our table. The chicken is always tangy and moist. I don't know what they put in the breading, but I'm like a moth to a flame to that stuff. The mac and cheese is some of the best in the Triangle. Our server, Lanyah, was a hustler! While there, she had 9 tables, and one of them was a large group of about 10 people. My wife and I each ordered A Classy Hen with a Baby Blueberry and a Peach Apricot Shmear. I liked the Peach Apricot better. My wife got fresh fruit as her side, which was mostly just orange slices. This, unfortunately, is the end of any positives. Because it was just Lanyah, the service was slow, and it appears from our various times coming to Dame's that slow service is the rule, not the exception. Our server said that it was typical to have just a single server, one cook, and a busser--who was not that helpful. Lanyah was still busing some tables and when there was a loud crash that sounded like dishes falling, she ran and checked on it herself. It took her a minute to get us water and then take our order, but it was understandable. She hugged my wife when we were leaving when we told her she deserved better. The cook was doing their best, but it took 48-minutes and 49 seconds to get our order after it was put in...yes, I timed it. One family walked out due to the long wait. There was another male staff member-I'm not sure whether he was the manager, but he spent most of the evening sitting in the bar area. He was not seating people, bringing out orders or drinks, or helping out our overwhelmed server. They were supposed to close at 7:30pm, but we walked out the door at 8:05pm and the large party was still there waiting for their food, with the other man still sitting in the bar. We want to love Dame's, but slow service just overshadows everything else that is positive. Until they hire an appropriate number of staff, we will not be back.

The brisket might have been some of the best I've ever had. It had a nice fat layer and was also "melt in your mouth" and juicy. The brisket didn't need any sauce at all. It was that good. The hushpuppies were the star at the table. My family considers themselves to be connoisseurs of hush puppies, and these were ranked in the top five. A respectable ranking from such a discriminating hushpuppy panel. The sides we sampled included collard greens, mac and cheese and BBQ beans. The collards and Mac and cheese were out of this world. I should have ordered a double serving of the collards. However, the beans were a huge disappointment. They were more like a bowl of sub-par chili than BBQ beans.
