The bagels at Gryfe's are so damn good! It's a unique style of bagel that I've never had outside of Toronto. They're crisp on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and have killer flavour. Totally different then the dense, chewy and salt-free Montreal-style bagels, which I hate by the way. If I can get 'em fresh I'll just eat them straight with no toppings. If they're more than 1/2 a day old, toast them and put on a little butter or cream cheese. Absolutely divine. Lawrence and Bathurst too much of a trek for you? Gryfe's bagels are also sold frozen to various groceries stores throughout the city. These bagels are light, crispy, chewy and crammed full of yum and deliciousness. I did live closer for a while and had them more often. Now it's quite a trek, but every time I go I'm always glad I did. They do offer a small selection of the standard bagel flavours like poppy seed and such, but my favourite is their plain bagel. The only potential bad part about these bagels? If you only buy 6, you will eat them all before you get home. The other local business owners have been quite annoyed by this place... Once I even saw a "NO BAGEL PARKING" sign on a parking lot for a nearby bank. The lineup on weekends is something to avoid as it often extends halfway down the block. read more

Best bagels ever. Period. Hands down. They don't come any better than this. Other than maybe Montreal bagels, these things are the most delicious carbtacular rings of dough you will have taste. The place showed a lot of promise for a good bagel spot. I got a half dozen and a couple of challah rolls. I would certainly go back for the challah -- delicious. They have a variety of baked goods which appeared to be delicious. In terms of being a good bagel place -- they were more like rolls with holes. If marketed as a roll, I would not have a problem with them -- quite tasty... in fact, I ate two on the way home just straight up [they're also not particularly large]. A bagel is supposed to have a hard exterior with a super chewy interior that, if you so chose, you could ball it up to a mass so dense that if you threw it at your sibling it would prompt at least a complaint to mom or dad. [I promise this never happened during my New Jersey upbringing.] Bagels at this place had neither a particularly resilient exterior, nor a chewy interior. They were too much like a roll. I went pretty far out of my way to try the bagels here based off YELP reviews. The flavor was very enjoyable, I had both a sesame and Flax seed bagel. Though I enjoyed my bagel, I couldn't help thinking it was more like eating a burger bun than a bagel. Strangely enough, my second bagel I took home actually lasted into the next day! Apparently I should have tried the pizza? I was greeted with, "Hello you want pizza or bagel?" Best bagels in the city. I used to love the Montreal style from St Urbaine until I tried a Gryffe's. They are perfect, crisp and light on the outside, soft and moist on the inside, better than any bagel I have ever tried. Not sure what the secret ingredient is, but I was so happy to go to the actual bakery a few months back. I was expecting a big Jewish family to be running it, but it was a large group of Philipino ladies. The girl at the cash was fast and friendly (heck even if she was mean and slow I would be back, they are that good). Got the bag home and felt sad I didn't buy more. My grandmother lives down the street from Gryfe's so I have been coming here my entire life, I recently moved to a condo up on Wilson Street. Literally, one of the top 10 reasons for moving to the area was to be close proximity to Gryfe's. It is the best bagel I am aware of in my 30 years on this earth. read more

They also sell mini-pizzas and rogalach, "to die for" and on Fridays, best challah in the city. I would be cautious eating from here. There was a large rock in the cinnamon raisin bagel that chipped one of my teeth.

I love these bagels, they are soo delicious and are amazing when they come right of of the oven. I tried them here because I usually go to Sunrise on Sheppard and I wanted to see if they taste different comes from the actual store rather being frozen. When they are ready to use them they just pop them in the oven. I'm from New York City, and really not a fan of Montreal Style bagels. These are smaller then a NY Bagel, but they're quite delicious. Light and not to heavy. A long drive for someone that lives in The Beach, but totally worth it as treat once in a while. read more

The bagels were ok. Nothing spectacular. The plain bagel was much better than the 60% wheat-- which tasted more like a roll than a bagel. The prices were good and the cream cheese they sold was inexpensive so you don't feel gouged on that. I'd go back but probably after some more bagel testing in the area. read more

When in Toronto I went out of my way to find Gryfe's in search of the elusive "Toronto style" bagel. I was not disappointed. There is no need to debate Montreal vs. Toronto style, I am just happy there is a place like Gryfe's adding to the diversity of bageldom. This place showed a lot of promise after having read all the positive reviews. I went on a Sunday hoping to get a bagel with cream cheese. Unfortunately, it wasn't available as there's a sign that clearly states "no bagel sandwiches on weekends". A bit disappointed, yes, so I decided to take a couple sesame bagels and eat them on the road. The bagel itself was not bad. It was fluffy and airy, reminded me more of a New York style bagel as opposed to a Montreal bagel, yet a bit smaller and much lighter and fluffier. As you bite into it, it kinda just melts in your mouth and is very easy to chew. Not rubbery at all. It was good. The texture was nice and chewy yet not rubbery. They had a touch of sweetness also. I went again the following day, hoping to get one with cream cheese. I walk in, ordered my bagel with cream cheese. It was only $2.10... Wow!!! The bagel itself was good, pretty satisfying. They did not toast them. I would have preferred it toasted, but I didn't see a toaster in sight. I asked for butter and cream cheese but got just the latter. For Toronto, yes, it's a good bagel. These bagels, however, cannot be compared to Montreal bagels as several other yelpers have stated (born and raised Montrealer here). The best way I can describe them really is fluffy and light bagels with chewy exterior. Nonetheless, I'm giving this place a good review because I feel that, compared to most other bagels I've tried in the city, these were the most enjoyable ones. read more

I wanted to give this a FIVE but the lady working there was rude. She thought we were Filipino and started talking to us in their language. I'm sorry that I didn't realize you were addressing us, but don't treat us any less because I don't speak the same language. Anyway, the bagel is still my favourite even when compared to Montreal's. Gryfe is sooooooooo soft and flavorful. To me, that is. Gryfe's has a subtle touch of a sweet and salty in the bagels. St. V on St. Viateur in Montreal needed butter to make it taste good. Please don't hate me for liking Gryfe over St. V. I'm sure my taste buds are not the same as a person from Montreal who prefers the bagels there. The line is almost always fast if nonexistent. It's very close to Baycrest Hospital. Parking can be tricky if can't find one on the streets, in front of people's houses. There are a few metered parking, but you really won't be inside for more than 3 minutes. read more

Gryfe's is a *really* small bakery located on Bathurst Street. Their baked goods menu is limited to bagels, other rolls (I think), and mini pizzas. Those said items are all amazing!!! The bagels are slightly sweet and salty at the same time, and then pizzas are really good as well. It is definitely the place to go on a day you are making brunch, because you can pick up your bagels, and they also sell other brunch necessities such as orange juice, cream cheese and smoked salmon. My only complaint is that it's $7.20 for a dozen bagels, and that sort of seems a bit pricy. Also, they are cash only; they don't have a debit or credit card machine.
