I haven't been to St. Urban bagel in Thornhill in years, but I was just at a lunch they catered and after that I just had to go buy food for my family to try. OMG!!!!! Those poppy salted bagels are the best thing ever. The tuna, egg, lox and cream cheese are fantastic. Oh and the challahs and blueberry cake too!!!! Everything is nut free and they have gluten free options too, which my daughter who has a celiac diagnosis, was so happy with. You all gotta go. I am converted!!! I have been fortunate to have travelled to Ottawa and Montreal this summer. I hauled back Montreal-style bagels from both road trips. They are my favourite style of bagel. I recently ate my entire stash of bagels from both trips. The good news is that Kettleman's is coming to Etobicoke this fall. I still needed bagels, though. I headed to my local grocery store recently to get some. They weren't and aren't the same. On Saturday, I visited St. Urbain bakery and cafe, which makes a variety of Montreal-style bagels. I was in heaven looking at roughly a dozen different bagel flavours at the back of the store. A older woman asked what I'd like. She didn't come across as being warm. I asked for six sesame and six cheddar bagels. She said that it was $0.25 more for each cheddar bagel. I was good with that, although she didn't wait for me to acknowledge that I was good with it. I got all bagels in a paper bag. Yay! I thanked her. I was so happy. I felt like I had won the lottery, except that I had to pay for my goods. This bakery offers cakes, cookies, flatbreads, and more. I decided to simply get my bagels before I cleaned my entire chequing account out at this store. The woman at the counter was much more personable. She put my goodies in a plastic bag and threw in a couple of bagel bags. I used my debit card to pay. Credit cards aren't accepted. You can pay with cash, too. I have had both bagel varieties since my visit. They are soft and chewy where they should be. The cheddar is brilliant and yummy. I've never had a cheddar one before until now. It's worth shelling out a bit to have one. There is something about crispy, oven-melted cheddar that tastes delicious. I made myself an egg salad sandwich today. Some like celery in it. I do, but changed it up with green onion. It's so good with the sesame bagel. This bakery is in a plaza with parking all around it. There's a huge Starbucks cafe a couple of doors down, so it does get busy. I parked on the opposite side of where this bakery is and walked over. I'm glad that I can get my fix without doing a huge road trip out east. I am thrilled that I have found this bagel place. I am a happy Montreal-style bagel fan. (374) read more

We normally go to Kettlemans for bagels but there doesn't seem to be one in North York. We found St. Urbain and although they didn't offer as many varieties of bagels, they did have a variety of cream cheeses. Their bagels don't appear to be as chewy in texture as Kettleman's. They did have tea sandwiches and other pastries available as well. read more

I used to make sure I got a bagel with cream cheese and veggies every time I came to the area to visit a friend. These bagels are fresh and delicious, and the vegetables were always a great grade and super fresh. Divine deli cream cheese ... I miss it just thinking about it. It's not very big and there's only a few stools at a counter if you plan not to take away your order. This bakery makes a nice array of breads and sweet baked goods. I've never not liked everything I tried from there. I almost wish my friend hadn't moved away from the area. Seriously. Every time I pass by I notice the place and think I should stop in for old time's sake, and it looks like more recent reviews shows that they're as good now as they were when I was an old regular. read more

Went to the Bathurst St. location on Thursday to buy some Montreal Bagels. Found out they only have Montreal Bagels on Friday to Sunday. What they had were what they call New York Bagels. I bought a few as I was hungry. These were doughy and under cooked. Had to throw them away. Is this is all you can sell then you should be ashamed. read more

Love these Montreal style bagels. Was introduced to their food twenty years ago by an employer who would buy their bagels and pastries our morning meetings. When I take a group who hasn't eaten there before I am sure to order a pumpernickel bagel with onion cream cheese, a sesame with tuna and vegetables and a poppyseed with lox and plain cream cheese. Buy the chocolate banks to take home for later! Great job setting a standard that never weavers. read more

standard bagels ..and the ladies aren't the friendliest ...and not much variety (just go to "what a bagel" nearby IMO). I guess try it out if youre in the area and want to try something "new" (ie you've already been to " what a bagel"). fyi, there was a customer drinking coffee ...I understand you need to take off your mask to drink, but he wasnt putting it back on after taking sips ...essentially he was maskless the entire time and presumably friends with the owner. the owner was somewhat smart enough to leave his own mask while talking to him, but he didn't probbaly wear it (nose wasn't covered ). read more

The best bagels in the area! The selection is not as great as other stores, but they are very good at what they produce. I find that the bagels here always stay fresh for longer. read more

We drive from Stouffville every couple of months to pick up their bagels. I always call a day ahead with my order. The bagels are great, freeze beautifully. They give you the bags so you can bag 6 to a bag. We like their cinnamon bagels however they offer a great selection. read more

The best Montreal style bagels in the city!!! Especially when they're hot and fresh..which is how the ladies behind the counter handed them to me. Montreal style bagels are boiled before they are baked in a wood oven, which makes them slightly sweet and scrumptiously chewy. Was craving lox and cheese, but the salmon in the fridge didn't look particularly appetizing, so I took my hot bagels home and picked up cream cheese and smoked salmon elsewhere. Too bad it's a fair drive from home... Otherwise I'm sure we'd be having g fresh bagels from St Urbain every morning! Yum! read more

Wow! Wowee wow! Their bagels might be the best bagels I've ever had! So chewy with a slight of sweetness to it. Their cream cheese is so creamy and smooth. Who needs to travel to Montreal anymore! This is definitely as good as it gets! read more

I was so surprised to find out how much a dozen bagels are now at St. Urbain Bagel on Bathurst & Steeles. I have been buying them for years. Being from Montreal, I still love them. But to pay $7 per dozen is very steep. Also, they used to have specials like after 4pm on a Wed. you could get a free dozen if you bought 2. Or it would be a bakers dozen at times,13 bagels. Now,the only special is if you buy 5 dozen for $35,you get some free. I will only buy them now for very special occasions and not routinely. read more

You haven't lived unless you've had a fresh out of the oven bagel with some butter and cheddar cheese. This has been my go to on weekend mornings for years. St Urbain also offers a variety of different pastries and the requisite lox and cream cheese that goes very well with the previously mentioned dream bagels. These bagels are definitely Montreal style in flavour, but I've found that over the years they have gotten smaller. This location has been owned by the same family for years. I also have a special place in my heart because they used to sponsor my softball team when I was a kid and our uniforms were a sweet purple (not that it's relevant but we were definitely the best looking team out there). There is another location in St Lawrence Market, but it's definitely worth the trek north of steeles to visit this store. It's got the nicest vibe and the ladies that work there are the sweetest on the planet! The only reason why this isn't a 5 star rating is due to the rising cost and shrinkage in size of their bagels. read more

The bakery delivers Montreal style bagels as advertised, including pumpernickel. A few other Bagel places have Montreal style bagels without any pumpernickel or they offer a New York Style pumpernickel, whilst all other are Montreal Style. I was immediately taken with the wood smoke smell from the open oven topped by the scent of fresh out of the oven bagels. My timing was good as the pumpernickel were hot. Others have complained about the bagel size but I was quite pleased with my serving, which seemed appropriate for an early morning snack. As I'm a fan of plain pumpernickel I didn't try the selection of toppings available. It was worth the trip for me. Better than ordering frozen from Montreal. read more

This is bagel shop makes THE best bagels that my husband and I have ever had! But the service is THE absolutely worst. We stood waiting to be served for over 5 minutes... no one else was even in the store. You basically have to beg the rude employees to help you! After leaning over the counter to get an employee's attention, she finally looked up at us asked "what do you want". When we asked to have our bagels toasted, she groaned and looked as if we were seriously inconveniencing her. By the time our bagels were ready there was a line of 4 people.. all with the same look of confusion when trying to get someone to place their order! Awesome bagels, BRUTAL service!!! read more

The blog says that Bagel House bakes the best Montreal-style bagels, but St Urbain Bagel is actually the best, to my taste. An ex-Montrealer exiled to Phila, I crave the chewiness, density, and slight sweetness imparted by boiling the dough in honey water. St Urbain delivers, and Bagel House is a little drier and has no sweetness. If you visit the Phila area, the place to go is Mount Royal Bagel in nearby Marlton, NJ, which does the absolutely best job of recreating this Montreal delicacy. read more
