Giving three starts mostly because I think my opinions on this meal are subjective. We stayed at the Woodstock Inn & Resort but still could only get a table here by making a reservation. We were in fact turned away the first day even though the place was deserted. We sat in the patio which overlooked a wedding with a live band. The service was friendly and attentive but the food just wasn't for us. We each only at half of our dishes despite arriving quite hungry. I ordered the Lion's Mane which was very acidic and the overall flavor profile was just not something I could stomach.. my husband had the cheese burger which they tried to fancy-fy. sometimes it's just better to stick with what's working I'm afraid.. read more

The Red Rooster is a restaurant at the Woodstock Inn. I ate here for dinner and lunch while I was in town. There's a large bar and a large dining room. The menu is very limited, but there's something for everyone. The food is fresh and the staff is personable. For lunch, I ordered a flat bread pizza, which was packed with flavor. It had pesto, mushrooms, arugula and balsamic vinegar. For dinner, I ordered a salad. The salad was very basic but the lettuce was fresh and the chicken was like butter. If you're staying at the Inn or need somewhere to eat while in town, this is a great option! read more

Very disappointing. I chose to go to this restaurant for my 80th birthday celebration because of a review that was very good. My husband informed the host prior to being seated. The server brought the bill with no mention of the birthday. My cousin reminded him and he took a slip from his pocket and said sorry he forgot. He gave me a desert menu and said to pick something "on him". He brought the item with a candle and my family sang to me. He also never asked for drink refills until we had finished eating. My husband and I ordered the swordfish which was delicious but the couscous that came with it was extremely salty. The Parkerhouse rolls were delicious. The inn is beautiful and worth a visit just to see it but don't bother on a special occasion unfortunately. read more

Not sure what lunch or dinner experiences are like, but breakfast was a showstopper. Breakfast wasn't included in our room so we had to decide whether to dine or not. The hostess was very persuasive, though not to the point where we chose the full buffet (couple dollars more per person). We stuck with the continental breakfast, which after a cursory tour seemed to have enough options to get us full for the day & road trip back to Boston ahead. They had everything: tea/coffee a la carte service, premade smoothies, specialty pastries, and stuff to make your own lox sandwiches. The smoked salmon was what dreams are made of & I would have eaten the whole board if that was appropriate. My mom & sister would also agree. My sister later grabbed the almond pastry which had a crunchy citrusy part I unfortunately can't name right now. All of us got our own too and were in heaven. read more

Really Enjoyable Dinner! Bruce (see photo) was helpful in fitting the 3 of us in last night on short notice. He was also very welcoming on our arrival. Seated promptly, then greeted by Jenine, (see photo) who had a delightfully engaging personality, made great recommendations, and seemed genuinely interested in making our dinner a special experience. Perfect Kettle One martini with (lots of) olives - great start. Thanks Jenine! Mussels were delicious, accompanied by perfectly toasted bread, in a tasty sauce. Cheese board had nice variety, and a flat, perfectly salted cracker-like wafer that was great. My wife said her salad was memorable and enjoyed her crab cake. The cioppino was good size, full of fish, and also had squid, clams, mussels and more. Dessert was a wow moment, a maple and nut filled ice cream and cake. Another great Jenine recommendation. Coffee and lattes were tasty too. Pricey, but well worth it! Jenine was a superb server that made a great meal better, and all of the folks that brought food to the table and took away the dirty dishes were great too! "Fine Dining" it is not. Family dining is more accurate. Service is attentive. The menu somewhat limited. I was looking forward to some authentic New England fare. But the offerings were more like any other place in California. Only two choices at the Inn, and this one is the better of the two. High prices for mediocre food. read more

It took a long time for the meal to be served.What sounded good on paper was a plate of mush for 34 dollars. It was so unappetizing that I was tempted to return it but nothing anyone at our table ordered looked any better. The waitress should have asked if we wanted separate checks.The bill was split evenly among the 4 couple. We ended up paying for drinks and desserts we did not order as a result. It was too embarrassing to ask for it to be redone. The best part of the meal forvus was the rolls and butter. This is a review for dinner. The breakfast buffer is kinda average (3 stars) and I wish they had a non-buffet option. But here, we're talking about dinner. I ate here twice on a recent stay and both times were excellent. The setting is nice (but the floor's a bit sticky). The chairs are shaker style (I think) but getting a bit old and booths are a bit uncomfortable. But it's nice. The service was friendly and efficient. And the food was very good if the menu a tad narrow. Highlights: Chicken liver mousse: superb Special ragout de boeuf: very good Pasta dish with mushrooms: superb Asparagus starter: very good Chicken: very good, portion a bit small Fluke crudo: very good Desserts were a tad disappointing, the strawberry rhubarb thing was not good. I was afraid of the maple cake because it sounded too sweet. The ice cream was fine so keep it simple on the dessert. read more

We had a wonderful dinner at the Red Rooster in the Woodstock Inn. We began with cocktails--the summer sunset and Porto. They were yummy. Then we had two salads-- watermelon and tomato plus a mixed green salad. Both were very good. We also shared an order of the excellent Parker House rolls. For main courses, we had mushroom risotto, bucatini and clams, grilled lamb and the heritage Berkshire pork chop. All of our mains were outstanding. Desserts included maple cake with ice cream, two scoops of blueberry lemon sorbet and a scoop each of vanilla and chocolate ice cream. DH said the maple cake was so good, the best part of his meal. The ice creams were rich and flavorful. I thought the blueberry lemon sorbet was the weakest part of my meal. The flavor was too subtle but the texture was a bit mealy from the blueberries. The meal was so good, I'd recommend to anyone looking for a great meal in a relaxing environment with good service. read more

This restaurant has a nice ambiance and nice serving staff. Sometimes when we travel we feel like having less carbs, so we don't feel too full as we hike or walk around....so we decided to get their Vermont Artisan Cheese Tasting, priced at $18, it was a nice selection of four local Artisan cheeses Served with candied almonds, honeycomb, and house fruit Purée. The cheeses were really good and they had a good mix of sharp and mild...it was a delightful board. It's located next to the Woodstock Inn. read more

I would like to rate this 4.5 stars but there are no half stars available, so the Red Rooster is a solid 4. We loved our Rooster Salad with Hanger Steak. The steak was plentiful and marinated well, and it was not too salty. The variety of elements in the salad made for a delicious dinner as well as a gorgeous presentation. I'm always happy when I can enjoy field greens and haricot verts (French string beans) together. Usually I eat haricot verts warm so I enjoyed that they were cool and crispy. I also liked the crispy quinoa and maple cider vinaigrette, as both were flavorful. It's been a long time since I've had a radish, and so I also liked the novelty of these in my salad, as well. The radishes added an elegant, old-school touch. Maybe they are plentiful in New England, but in other places, I haven't seen them. I didn't take a photo of my dish, but I'm kind of remembering butter lettuce, too, though it's not on the menu description. The steak -- delivered on the side for the salad -- smelled so flavorful when it arrived. We were thrilled with this order and our server liked the order so much that she ordered it on her break. We also shared a half order of Parker Rolls. They were fresh, flavorful and fluffy! And I'm pretty sure they were served with European butter. Finally, I ordered the Töst Sparkling non-alcoholic beverage from Manchester, Vermont. Presentation: A+. Flavor: C. There was a lot of a ginger ale taste with not-strong-enough of white tea or cranberry notes. The staff, here, were lovely at every turn: engaging, polite, each with a sense of urgency and very knowledgeable about the offerings. The most delicious homemade tomato soup in my life! Inside the Woodstock Inn, this is a bustling place! The restaurant is bright, clean and the service was amazing. Sara-our server-was a joy and on point. I think she really enjoys her job! There was no rush in service, we lingered and had great conversations with the table next to us and enjoyed a few good laughs. The food was DELICIOUS- it was fresh, hot, farm to table tomato soup and what I will call an adult grilled cheese. The servings were perfect! I will be back! read more

We started off with the amazing mussels with a fantastic cream sauce with a chunk of pork belly and toast points. One word...Devine.Then I had the fantastic fish and chips and my partner had the grilled cheese and tomato soup. Since the tomato soup had fennel I passed on the tasting, but on the brisk Vermont day we were there is was delightful grilled cheese and it was definitely cheesy! My fish and chips were in a wonderful batter crust that was perfect. My only disappointment was the celery root slaw. It was both on texture which I like crisp and I like it tangy. We were 4 people for a birthday lunch. It's beautiful and the menu is a little farm to table-ish, and there was something for everyone. It was actually nicely plated and everything was delicious. The 1 star was removed for the service. At a restaurant in a lux hotel of this caliber I would expect more refined service. After our appetizers, our server asked us to take our dirty forks off our plates and place them back on the table. No table cloth, no placemats, straight on to the table. I was horrified. That's just the start of it. It was still a lovely experience, and the maple creme brulee was extraordinary, and that's why I didn't take 2 stars away for the server. read more

We were very disappointed with a recent lunch we had at the Inn. Friends came for a visit and we wanted to treat them for a great lunch. Instead we had a mediocre meal. The food came 35 minutes after we ordered it . The salmon, added to the salad was overcooked and dry. The soup was fine but cold, and the cheese sandwich was spoiled by the andouille. The bread of the turkey panini was dry and was left too long in the toaster. We debated whether to send the whole order back, but we decided against it because of time constraints. Towards the end of our meal, a waiter saw our half eaten food and inquired if we wanted to box the left overs. We responded by advising him that doing so was not warranted. He just shrugged his shoulders and walked away. read more

The Red Rooster is the high end restaurant at the high end Woodstock Inn in Woodstock VT. The atmosphere of the hotel lobby and entry way into the eatery is classy New England. The food and service are both excellent, but you'll need to bring your wallet. In December 2023 the pre-fix three-course meal was $75 before taxes, fees and tip, BUT it was also delicious. The beat salad was light, sweet and tasty. The tenderloin was baked to pink perfection and the dessert was also extremely good. read more

As a guest of the Woodstock Inn and Resort, Red Rooster was the main restaurant in the hotel. I definitely enjoyed their Breakfast options and foods more than their Dinner offering. Although, the rolls provided at dinner were absolutely delicious, the menu is quiet small with seasonal specials. The service is relaxed, and at times slow but that's just the pace of Woodstock, VT. A perfectly fine, and enjoyable option in Woodstock. read more

No one who works here knows their trade well nor has an inviting demeanor. Let's start with the host. I asked if they had my notes on the special occasion. 'Sure.' Then proceeded to seat us in the worst area in a thinned out dinner crowd. Waiter arrives and hands out menus without saying an absolute word. Waiter returns 15 minutes later and can't answer the simplest question about the menu nor attempts to find someone who can do so. Every time our dishes arrived, the server literally bumped me and guests to slide dishes onto the table in the most inconvenient places on the table. The first time I've dined and spent $180 per person and no one in the entire establishment asked me if I enjoyed my meal. The food is a 4 star experience . The wine list is rather extensive yet few bottles are at 3x markup with most at 5x. You should know that the kitchen also services the Tavern at the Inn and they seem to bring a slightly better game for that experience. As far as dinner service goes, it's a zero star experience. read more

I can't begin to express the perfection I experienced. The service and ambiance. And of course the food. I started with charred carrots which are set upon whipped goat cheese, and seasoned with dukkah and spiced with Calabrian peppers. Beautiful sweetness and all sorts of savory. The rack of lamb was cooked beautifully and served with tabbouleh of quinoa and a smear of paprika. Amazing balance in each bite. I ended with an almond cake covered by simply sauced strawberries--elegantly fruity and not too sweet at all--and a light foam of rhubarb. See the pictures for yourself. The Inn is lovely and special, the restaurant not so much. Seats were this weird half booth, where we directly faced the couple next to us. Couple in second seating were lovely and struck up a conversation - first seating almost acted like we interrupted their private dinner. Weird. Server Anna was disinterested; never went over the specials, somewhat inattentive and slow. Lamb was supposed to be M/R; it was bloody. I don't want to be overly critical, but for how lovely the Inn is, the restaurant felt like a "caricature of Vermont", almost like an upscale Cracker Barrel. Next time in Woodstock, skip the Rooster and go to Simon Pierce. read more

We had a really nice experience here a couple days ago. We were sat promptly. Our waitress, Anna, was nice and attentive. We started with the fondue appetizer - BIG MISTAKE. It was DELICIOUS - but gigantic for only 2 people to split. We could have gotten that, split a salad and call it dinner. By the time our two decent sized entrees came out - we were stuffed. The fondue is served with multiplier dippers and the Vermont cheddar was a treat (albeit a bit bland alone). For dinner - I had the short ribs with root veggie hash. It was served with a demi-glaze reduction that was to DIE FOR. Hash could have been a tad more browned but it was still tasty. My husband had the steak frites. Fries were nothing special but they did have a truffle flavor that was delicious. The steak had a sauce on it but it wasn't that memorable. It was OK and cooked nicely (medium!). We were too stuffed for dessert. All and all, I was a bit worried about the food given some of the other reviews (but were staying at the Inn so it was easy), but we had a great experience and great service! read more

Last year, I came here for the first time and fell in love with a few things. The bartender, who was so sweet, the interiors, which are just so inviting and warming, and the delicious food. I had my first Ruben sandwich ever- and it was outstanding. Unforgettable! And of course their tomato&grilled cheese combo... Well of course I had to make my way back! And I got the combo again of course. My fiancé and I split that and another sandwich, (which I now forget the name of) but had turkey, apples and cheese, paired with some fries - and it was so great. What a beautiful lunch. The place is quaint, quiet, and serene, so comforting and to me a very special spot. The Inn itself is so gorgeous and this restaurant does a great job at complimenting it. I've gotta say, I'm surprised by the overall rating Red Rooster has. My experience was superb for lunch. The Woodstock Inn is an incredible gem with stunning interiors that make you wish you had a collection of antiques to match the traditional style decor. The restaurant, Red Rooster, was pretty desolate for lunch around Christmastime, which was surprising to me but I just chocked it up to Covid-19. The emptiness didn't bother me, though. I like the quiet, and the place was big enough that I didn't feel like the wait staff was watching me eat. I hate when you're the only person in the dining room and the servers become a little TOO attentive, if you know what I mean. The food was spectacular. They've really nailed their hamburger. I think it's hard for a lot of places to do a solid burger that doesn't rely on too many toppings to be delicious. The mac 'n' cheese was also very good. Our server was adorable and entertained my requests for photos. After seeing the Woodstock Inn, I'll definitely be splurging and staying there in the future. read more

This place can afford to be more on the bland side and they seem to know it. First off, they are one of the few open restaurants in the off season. You even need a reservation for lunch! A walk around town will show you that there is probably only one other restaurant open so yeah, not a lot of choices. The Woodstock in itself is beautiful and the front staff are lovely but this restaurant could be improved in so many ways. First off, my particular waiter was just plain awful. We barely had a chance to sit and collect ourselves and he wanted our drink orders right away. 3 minutes later, he wants our food order. I barely had time to look at the options! In his rush to get our food out, it didn't even come in a timely manner. Multiple tables around us got their food first even though they ordered later. We ordered the mussels, the burger and the BLT tacos. Very miss on all three. The mussels were incredible tiny. Like ridiculously small compared to the shells. The actual meat was 1/6th the size of the shells. Whoever their suppliers are, they need to get a new one. It was also drowned in a tomato based sauce which wasn't horrible but clearly the filled the space with tomatoes and reduced the number of mussels. Also, they couldn't even give us any bread for the mussel sauce, like all other restaurants do. It was not worth the money. THe burger was just 'meh'; it was a burger, at least they didn't burn it. The BLT tacos are minimalistic to say the least. You get a thin slice of pork belly and small portion of lettuce and a slathering of mayo. The tortilla was stale and the pork was bland, almost like they forgot to salt it. You bet the waiter was MORE than happy to take our plates as soon as we finished and throw down the check. He even did that rude thing some waiters do and didn't even wait for us to leave before grabbing the check. He also didn't even walk away before looking at what his tip was. Don't worry, despite his attitude, I still did 20% like I always do, but I regret tolerating his poor behavior. Overall, the service was terrible, the food was bland and minimalistic. I wish I had just gone somewhere else. At least now I know to never come back. read more

My husband and I wanted to get a nice dinner on the last night of our Northeast Road trip when we were in Woodstock, VT last Labor Day weekend and we decided to visit Red Rooster, located inside the Woodstock Inn. We weren't staying at the Woodstock Inn (we stayed at the Woodstock Shire), but we really loved visiting it. It's very classy and decadent! And we certainly loved having dinner there. Service was excellent throughout our dinner and we really enjoyed the appetizers and entrees we ordered. We had the following: -Crab Crab (Avocado tomato confit, crab & chorizo hash, asparagus) -Seared Scallop and Shaved Fennel Salad (Orange, Watercress, Toasted Hazelnut Vinaigrette) -Halibut Pot-Au-eu (Oil Poached, Summer Vegetables, Fava Beans, Olive Tapenade) -Pan Roasted Filet of Beef (Chanterelles, Arugula Pesto, Cognac Reduction) -Merlot -White Wine Everything was excellent throughout our meal and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We went to the Red Rooster to celebrate a special occasion, but ultimately the horrible service ruined the night and the mediocre food had no chance of redeeming it. On the whole, the waiters were rude and unhelpful, but there were also a few really strange points. -We we're a party of 5 at a circular table, and when the waiter first came over he just dropped a stack of menus in front of me and just said "pass these around". And when he brought out plates, silverware and napkins, he did the same thing. Now, if it were busy or he didn't have good access to pass these out, I would understand. But there were only two other parties dining that night (it was empty) and we were at a completely accessible table. The attitude in his voice didn't help either...or the fact that these are 35 dollar entrees....it's not like we were at a BBQ place. -One of our friends has a dairy allergy and asked if one of the items had dairy in it. The waiter went to the kitchen to check and came back saying they actually didn't know so we should get something else....shouldn't you know what's in the food you're serving?! -We went the whole meal without getting out water glasses refilled, even after asking for more water. It was weird and was like he was going out of his way to be inhospitable. Keep in mind, the restaurant was nearly empty. The food was supremely meh. Half of us thought the food was 'fine', others thought it was bad. It definitely wasn't good. To top it all off, they add 20% gratuity to all bills. We even went down to the bar the following day and that was no better. I ordered a beer and they gave me a dirty can and no glass. Now, to be fair, I don't mind drinking for a can at all. But this was visibly dirty.... What kind of bar does that? Other than some dive bars, I've never been to a bar that doesn't give you a glass when you get a can....let alone a fancy hotel bar.
