So glad they finally opened one in the East Village, because the only location in NYC is in Staten Island. I love Philly cheese steak & I am no expert on them but this is my take on G's cheesesteak. Everyone thinks a good Philly cheesesteak starts with the meat, but I think it starts with the bread first. Their bread is made and baked daily which is always a major plus. If they have sesame I'd go for that because it adds just the right amount of texture and a subtle nutty flavor that takes the whole sandwich to another level. The steak was chopped perfectly--tender, juicy, and packed into every bite. Not cheap with the meat, & each bite was meaty. The Cooper Cheese was the real MVP: creamy, rich, and melted into the meat like it was born to be there. I like to keep it simple, no wiz cheese or any additional toppings. The first time I got seeded bread & the 2nd time I got plain - both are excellent and baked fresh daily until they run out. It's a hefty sandwich that is 2 full meals for me easily. First time visit, went to the counter, sorry we ran out of bread...it was in the early afternoon.....was instructed to come back in 30 minutes. I was here with a friend a few months ago where we shared a couple other excellent cheesesteaks. I'm not exactly sure the reason why this place hasn't gotten the press some of the other cheesesteak places but they should definitely get it eventually as the quality is great, the portion sizes are more than large enough to justify the price point, and they have enough variety in the menu even for a place that specializes in cheesesteaks. The people in front were friendly as well. As there were two of us, we decided to split two and take home whenever was left. The former, which was my choice under G's Best, was the Prime Rib Steak with portobello, brown gravy, marsala sauce, and melted provolone for $17.99 making it I believe the priciest of the cheesesteak options. We got it with cooper sharp instead as I heavily prefer cheddar over provolone and it was excellent. The steak was thick but tender and the mushrooms added some texture. The marsala was solid with more flavor coming from the brown gravy and the mixture of brown gravy and cheddar was delicious though I think it would also work quite well with provolone also. This was excellent and I would order it again. The other person went with the Truffle Wiz Wit with fried onions, cherry pepper mayo, cooper sharp, and black truffle wiz on a seeded roll for $16.99. I was happy that the truffle flavor was present but not overpowering as I usually dislike most products made with truffle oil for this reason. This instead had a good balance with a light flavor of truffle along with the richer cheese flavor, mayo, and onions. This was also very tasty with the steak again having good texture though I preferred mine slightly. This was an excellent cheesesteak place and miles better than most others I've had before. I would probably get the onion marmalade steak next time or go back with the portobello but most of the option sound great. Go here before there's lines as there definitely should be. read more

I ordered to go and had a 45 min drive to get home so a lot of presentation was lost. The onion marmalade has the most amazing, sweet, oniony taste. The sweetness really caught me by surprise yet it didn't overpower the cheesesteak. It definitely takes away the need for any sauce. The animal fries were pretty good. They are your standard animal fries that you can get just about anywhere. My one complaint with the fries though is that they didn't chop the burger and put them over the fries; they just threw the patty on top and sauced it. Today, 4/14, I came in around 4:40pm and there was a younger girl at the register with a very nasty attitude. I see on the receipt that her name is Kayla. The Cheesesteak is on par with the other 2 we went to and has most selections compared to the other two such as selection of cheeses, bread and toppings (mushrooms, peppers, onions, etc.) beside their standard Cheesesteaks. Service and staff were friendly. Bigger eating area with chairs compared to the other 2 spots we visited and a clean bathroom. Always a plus. Will come back again when in the area. I'll also take their Vodka Burrata Cutlet over the cheesesteak any day. The fries and fried mac n cheese were nothing special. The two items I would stay away from are the egg rolls. If they made some changes maybe I would try them again. First issue for me was how they cut the rolls lengthwise in half. Who does that for presentation? Cut it in the middle at an angle if you have to cut it at all. I get you want to make it look like a larger portion than it really is for what you're charging. Second issue are the sauces they DROWN it in. For the cheese steak it's a cloyingly sweet chili sauce that is so sweet, it tastes like dessert. I was in alphabet city and hungry. The big orange sign caught my attention and immediately made me hungry for a cheesesteak. They have a build your own section but I opted for the chicken chipotle sandwich. I was immediately regretting walking in when I saw the prices of the sandwiches but I decided to go for it. Had it for the first time in months and was disappointed. A few things I loved weren't on the menu anymore. They changed their bread which was the biggest disappointment. Not only did the size shrink dramatically (so narrow for a cheesesteak) it just wasn't the same great bread they had before. Almost no taste - it was an incredibly inferior replacement.
