Beyond the food, the original restaurant captures something surprisingly difficult to reproduce outside the Midwest. The space is cozy, tasteful, and welcoming without feeling staged, retaining a Midwestern warmth while remaining completely at home in SoHo. The corner of MacDougal and Prince Streets has long been one of my favorite downtown restaurant crossroads, dating back to the days when Souen and Mekong helped define the cluster, and Emmett's feels like a natural continuation of that history. Deep dish takes time, so anticipate the bake, settle into the room, and avoid arriving in a rush. Watching Emmett's grow has been satisfying. I am excited to try the Grove Street location, especially because friends whose taste I trust love it, and opening across from the iconic Buvette seems like a wise move. The block is already one of the West Village's most charming, and the interior appears equally inviting: tasteful, intimate, and functional. Perhaps this period marks an inflection point, with Emmett's expanding first to the Upper East Side, then to Philadelphia, please, and someday to a handsome location in London. Many Chicagoans I know, myself included, subconsciously treat a move to New York, Los Angeles, or Miami as a self-authored reinvention. Midwestern reserve can initially feel provincial, so we become flashier and more affected, learning the clothes, restaurants, and social choreography of coastal life with professional dedication. For a while, ambition, nightlife, and travel carry the magic of becoming the person we spent our teenage years and twenties imagining, until some of that promise begins to look like a mirage. Eventually, many of us settle back into the grounded, less rehearsed personas our Midwestern roots gave us in the first place. Ultimately, Emmett's also taps into those same roots, vividly showcased throughout the John Hughes movie catalog. Both make me nostalgic for Chicago and proud to come from a place shaped by decency, unvarnished humanity, and a refreshing lack of pretense. Emmett's conveys that character through delicious pizza and hospitality that feels distinctly Midwestern without becoming a caricature of the region. I feel fortunate to have received equal exposure to both schools: the coasts gave me cultural range and global energy, while Chicago gave me humility and a reliable instinct for nonsense. Whether I ever move home is anyone's guess, but for now, an Emmett's pizza is an excellent reminder of the incredible place my journey started. read more

Cute casual outdoor setup for when the weather's nice. Extremely limited indoor seating, and they crank the music volume. I had one of my occasional cravings for Chicago-style deep dish, and after doing some digging, it turns out there's only one joint serving that kinda pizza on the whole damn island. How is that possible?! In contrast, you can hit up at least half a dozen delightful Georgian restaurants within a five-block walk in the West Village. Wherefore art thou deep dish? If possible, book a reservation. On the rare occasion when we've walked by and tried to score a seat on a whim, the wait has been off-putting. We opted for a Gabe Froman (spinach, 1/2 sausage, 1/2 pepperoni) and thoroughly enjoyed our pie. I was impressed by how fresh and flavorful the ingredients were. Between the sausage and pepperoni halves, it was really obvious -- from taste alone (obviously, visually and texturally) -- which half was which protein. Separately, I'm used to a more buttery crust (Malnati's) or crustless style (Pequod's). I didn't feel that Emmett's crust added much to the experience, but the whole shebang definitely scratched my deep dish itch. As anticipated, it took awhile to bake, so we enjoyed some beers and a Caesar salad while people-watching as folks passed by on the sidewalk. A slice or two feels like a whole meal; between the two of us, we couldn't comfortably finish one pizza, which was just as well. I'm never mad about some leftover pizza for later. I only get a hankering for Chicago-style pizza maybe once a year, and dining here is a caloric commitment. I'm very grateful there's at least one legit deep dish shop in town, though. I'd much rather patronize a quality local biz over having to reheat a frozen Goldbelly delivery any day. read more

Emmett's is known I believe for their pizza. It is a small restaurant with a small bar area and some outdoor dining. Usually hard to get into I have heard. My friend and I walked by there and saw no one was inside. I asked what time they open and the guy said in 5-10min. So we waited and got a table outside. I was excited to try this place as I have heard good things about it. We ended up not getting pizza but my friend and I got burgers with caramelized onions and I got cheese in mine. We got as our sides their house made chips. The waiter by accidentally gave me fries so the chips for me were on the house which I thought was nice. Though, it was not crowded at all it seemed like our food was taking a pretty long time. I did let the waiter know about my allergies so that may have been why it was taking long. I've had Chicago deep dish pizza twice before: one at the gold standard Lou Malnati's and once in the O'Hare food court. My experience at Emmett's fell somewhere in between those two precedents. Like others I suspect, we grabbed two bar seats here after the wait at Raku was too long. The homemade potato chips we ordered during the 30 minute wait for the pizza were excellent. I would definitely come back to have these again with a beer. As for the pizza, the structural integrity post-cut left something to be desired, but the flavors of the slightly sweet sauce were very good. What a swanky kind of place. We got lucky and got placed in the 2 seater near the open window. Felt like sitting at a cafe in Europe. I love how the menu isn't massive: they got dogs, burgers, pizzas, sandwiches, and some salads. My husband and I split a Caesar salad, a hot dog, and a deep dish. Note: the menu says 10, 12, and 14 in for the pizza but they told us they no longer do 10in. The Caesar salad was incredible: homemade croutons that have a soft crunch (if you know you know) and PLENTY of grated parm. The hot dog was also excellent! Didn't think a hot dog could blow me away. The bun was poppy seeded and super soft (maybe steamed). And then the star of the show: the deep dish pizza in NYC. It does take like 30 mins, so make sure to get an appetizer. So worth it. Love the little pizza timer they bring out to make sure that the pizza is a perfect level of doneness! I think this is the only spot in NYC for authentic Chicago Deep Dish. The pizza was solid. I was also so pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the Greek salad was. The service was quick. The deep dish takes 30 minutes to bake, which we were told upon ordering. It came out at almost 30 mins on the dot. So that was pretty awesome. I'm waiting to write this to see if I'm fussy because I paid $30 with tip for a burger or if I actually didn't like the experience and meal. Survey says...I didn't enjoy my time or my meal. I got the burger with the cheese and caramelized onions thinking it might pack more of a punch than the regular burger. It was underwhelming; the flavor was solely in the toppings and not in the burger itself. Three people at the bar (myself included) were asked to shift at the bar to fit a group of three; normally no problem at all, but for some reason it added to the "meh" vibe of the experience. Side salad was the Greek salad, which was fresh, although very heavy on the raw onions and tomatoes. I'm not sure if I'm overthinking it but after reading other reviews, i don't think I am - the bartender was not very friendly to the food delivery drivers, having one stop at the entrance and wait outside in the rain, then hold up his phone through the glass. I understand drivers take up space and when it's busy it can be cumbersome but, I was shocked at the tone and treatment. The cheese pull on the deep dish pizza is never-ending. I wish that the tomato sauce was spread more evenly around the pizza, but I found that the sauce slips off anyway as you grab a slice. While this might not be the most convenient pizza to eat, chances are this deep dish pizza will satisfy your deep dish cravings! The crust is toasted perfectly golden and isn't hard. It was pretty good but this was definitely a heavy pizza. This Buds For You ($29) - lots of veggies (contains spinach, mushrooms and onions). Well flavored however I still preferred the Meat Lover more. It was more cheesy and I just like meat better. 3 STARS Meat Lover ($33) - lots of meat. Pepperoni, sausage, Italian beef. Very cheesy. I would order this again. 4 STARS. One pie is more than enough for 2 people. We had to packed the rest of the pizzas to go since we couldn't finish it. Service was good. She checked in multiple parties in front of us then proceeded to ignore us without any acknowledgement we were there. Eventually a server came by and sat us down at the table that had been empty this whole time. We ordered the Big Gay Al thin pizza and the Chicago hot dog with the side salad. The menu does say the deep dish pizzas require 30 min to be cooked although the thin crust pizza does not have the same warning. Despite this, our pizza did take closer to 40 min to come out. One thing I have to say I don't like and it's not Emmett's fault is Uber delivery. don't ever order a pizza using Uber delivery because literally the last 5 times I've ordered pizza from them. The pizza looked a mess when I received it. I still ate it. One time I couldn't eat it because it was literally upside down. So it's better to pick it up or eat there. I believe the owners originally from Chicago and that's why they've got this down to a science . If you would love a real treat Emmett's is the place for deep dish pizza! CEREAL! Is the first word that came to my head while trying the recommended full bodied red wine. Shouting the first word that comes to your mind is a technique a sommelier recommended to actualize your thoughts on flavor. Loved it more as a dine-in than a carry-out for sure! My husband surprised me with dinner here for my birthday last year with friends and I was pleasantly surprised at how well they did a Chicago deep-dish, considering that's where I'm originally from and have eaten for years. Their tavern-style pizza is also excellent! We shared the cheesy garlic bread as a table and that was also well-made. The second time I ordered from here was a take-out, and I won't be doing that again. They did a great job making the food and packing it, but it didn't travel as well as I hoped it would and we had to reheat in the oven and it changed the texture quite a bit. The flavors were still good though! Service has always been great here whether dining in or carrying out, so for that I'm grateful. We didn't eat inside the restaurant when we went last year, but they have a nice outdoor patio that's heated and they were able to accommodate a table for 5 even though it was a bit tight. I swung by Emmett's last week and the place had real energy. You could practically feel the ovens working. Deep-dish pizza takes time, but the crust stayed crisp and the sauce was tangy in a way you don't get in regular slices. Pub-style thin pies are worth trying too.
