Cute casual outdoor setup for when the weather's nice. Extremely limited indoor seating, and they crank the music volume. I had one of my occasional cravings for Chicago-style deep dish, and after doing some digging, it turns out there's only one joint serving that kinda pizza on the whole damn island. How is that possible?! In contrast, you can hit up at least half a dozen delightful Georgian restaurants within a five-block walk in the West Village. Wherefore art thou deep dish? If possible, book a reservation. On the rare occasion when we've walked by and tried to score a seat on a whim, the wait has been off-putting. We opted for a Gabe Froman (spinach, 1/2 sausage, 1/2 pepperoni) and thoroughly enjoyed our pie. I was impressed by how fresh and flavorful the ingredients were. Between the sausage and pepperoni halves, it was really obvious -- from taste alone (obviously, visually and texturally) -- which half was which protein. Separately, I'm used to a more buttery crust (Malnati's) or crustless style (Pequod's). I didn't feel that Emmett's crust added much to the experience, but the whole shebang definitely scratched my deep dish itch. As anticipated, it took awhile to bake, so we enjoyed some beers and a Caesar salad while people-watching as folks passed by on the sidewalk. A slice or two feels like a whole meal; between the two of us, we couldn't comfortably finish one pizza, which was just as well. I'm never mad about some leftover pizza for later. I only get a hankering for Chicago-style pizza maybe once a year, and dining here is a caloric commitment. I'm very grateful there's at least one legit deep dish shop in town, though. I'd much rather patronize a quality local biz over having to reheat a frozen Goldbelly delivery any day. read more

I'm waiting to write this to see if I'm fussy because I paid $30 with tip for a burger or if I actually didn't like the experience and meal. Survey says...I didn't enjoy my time or my meal. I got the burger with the cheese and caramelized onions thinking it might pack more of a punch than the regular burger. It was underwhelming; the flavor was solely in the toppings and not in the burger itself. Three people at the bar (myself included) were asked to shift at the bar to fit a group of three; normally no problem at all, but for some reason it added to the "meh" vibe of the experience. Side salad was the Greek salad, which was fresh, although very heavy on the raw onions and tomatoes. I'm not sure if I'm overthinking it but after reading other reviews, i don't think I am - the bartender was not very friendly to the food delivery drivers, having one stop at the entrance and wait outside in the rain, then hold up his phone through the glass. What a swanky kind of place. We got lucky and got placed in the 2 seater near the open window. Felt like sitting at a cafe in Europe. I love how the menu isn't massive: they got dogs, burgers, pizzas, sandwiches, and some salads. My husband and I split a Caesar salad, a hot dog, and a deep dish. Note: the menu says 10, 12, and 14 in for the pizza but they told us they no longer do 10in. The Caesar salad was incredible: homemade croutons that have a soft crunch (if you know you know) and PLENTY of grated parm. The hot dog was also excellent! Didn't think a hot dog could blow me away. The bun was poppy seeded and super soft (maybe steamed). And then the star of the show: the deep dish pizza in NYC. It does take like 30 mins, so make sure to get an appetizer. So worth it. I've had Chicago deep dish pizza twice before: one at the gold standard Lou Malnati's and once in the O'Hare food court. My experience at Emmett's fell somewhere in between those two precedents. Like others I suspect, we grabbed two bar seats here after the wait at Raku was too long. The homemade potato chips we ordered during the 30 minute wait for the pizza were excellent. I would definitely come back to have these again with a beer. As for the pizza, the structural integrity post-cut left something to be desired, but the flavors of the slightly sweet sauce were very good. I think this is the only spot in NYC for authentic Chicago Deep Dish. The pizza was solid. I was also so pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the Greek salad was. The service was quick. The deep dish takes 30 minutes to bake, which we were told upon ordering. It came out at almost 30 mins on the dot. So that was pretty awesome. Was able to get a spot for 2 at the bar on a Friday night without a reservation by showing up at 6:30! (I would highly recommend getting a reservation if you can though!) Pizza was fantastic , we just got a pepperoni pie, but then got hot honey and some of the paprika ranch to dip it in and it was fantastic. Love the little pizza timer they bring out to make sure that the pizza is a perfect level of doneness! I can't speak to the service because I had this pizza delivered, but when I've passed by before, this looked like a lively after-work hangout spot. The cheese pull on the deep dish pizza is never-ending. I wish that the tomato sauce was spread more evenly around the pizza, but I found that the sauce slips off anyway as you grab a slice. While this might not be the most convenient pizza to eat, chances are this deep dish pizza will satisfy your deep dish cravings! The crust is toasted perfectly golden and isn't hard. (If you like soggy fries like I do - they were very soggy). Loved it more as a dine-in than a carry-out for sure! My husband surprised me with dinner here for my birthday last year with friends and I was pleasantly surprised at how well they did a Chicago deep-dish, considering that's where I'm originally from and have eaten for years. The second time I ordered from here was a take-out, and I won't be doing that again. They did a great job making the food and packing it, but it didn't travel as well as I hoped it would and we had to reheat in the oven and it changed the texture quite a bit. The flavors were still good though! Service has always been great here whether dining in or carrying out, so for that I'm grateful. We didn't eat inside the restaurant when we went last year, but they have a nice outdoor patio that's heated and they were able to accommodate a table for 5 even though it was a bit tight. We went right before lunch ended so we were seated right away in their outdoor seating. Their indoor seating is a little small. We ordered the Cheese Louise which has a caramelized cheese crust and we added sausage, pepperoni, and spinach. We were disappointed by the lack of flavor and cheese in the pizza. It also took a very long time to come out. The crust was also very tough and made the dish even more greasy which left a very unpleasant feeling. Although they are known for their deep dish, the spotlight was on the thin crust. We ordered the Hot Girl which was delicious and the best thing we had there. Emmett's has been on my radar for a long-time. On Saturday night, I stopped in with three friends, and we were lucky to score seats at the bar. Reservations are highly recommended as this is a small establishment. My partner and I shared an Italian beef sandwich to start. The pickled peppers were spicy, a good sign of things to come. We drizzled on the jus and made only a small mess. I liked this sandwich a lot, and the fries were greasy and delicious. For the main course, a 10" deep dish with soppressata, red onions, and jalapeños. It takes a while to bake but the results can't be disputed. The crust has unbelievable structural integrity, supporting a lot of weight while staying crispy. Our toppings worked perfectly together, and the sauce and cheese brought it all together for a smashing finish. I wish my stomach (and my wallet) could allow me to eat everything on the menu. I suppose next time I'll try one of their gorgeous Chicago dogs. People rave about the flat pies, but I'm gonna need a lot more deep dish before I even consider it. read more

And the green pepper in the patty just made no sense to the burger. This is my first time trying the deep dish pizza, therefore there is no comparison for me to measure whether it was a good deep dish pizza. I could only say that I like the cookie-like crunchy crust. However the topping and cheese just short in flavor. I could only taste the tomato sauce. I would say I love the authentic New York pizza in those hyped pizzerias more than this. We chose the chips with the sandwich, and they come out warm, fresh, and crisp. The pizza prices are in line for the neighborhood, but a little high for NYC. The other prices are in line for NYC. Service is good to very good. We'll go again. TIP Emmets is 11 minutes walk from Toad Hall, a very old school bar with prices lower than usual for the neighborhood. We like that bar for Happy Hour. TIP the Hot Papi features fresh jalapeños. You might find this too hot. A pepperoni and giardiniera combo probably has enough heat for you. TIP the ambience is very basic.
