Downgrading to 3 stars from 4 stars as the food quality has gone down. Many tourists who've visited Jamaica have proclaimed it "The most beautiful country in the world." Interestingly there have also been many Jamaican nationals such as Collin Powell, Boukman, Kojo, Marcus Garvey, Usain Bolt, Lennox Lewis who have been leaders in world politics, music, athletics & philosophy. I've always wondered how such a small island can have such a profound influence on the world. For instance reggae music has a world wide following, and is considered the "uniting universal " music of Africa. Rastafari( indigenous created religion) is ranked 21st in in the world as most influential religion in the world. With all that said, I've always had an uncanny desire for Jamaican Cuisine & Libations. As Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is the highest grade coffee in the world and de facto King of Java. I've ranked true Jamaican cuisine among the worlds top 5 palatial experiences. Which brings me to G's, a modest little Jamaican restaurant that is more of a take-out than an eat-in establishment. Thanks to Veronica J's review I was lead to G's for lunch one afternoon. Arriving at G's I was happy to find out the owners are from "country"( meaning not from a city), Trelawny to be exact. Why am I happy, because city people from Jamaica tend to use more of a commercialized powdered based seasoning like seasoned salt, while country people are more traditional and use fresh ingredients like scallion,thyme & allspice etc. T H E F O O D - Brown Stew Fish ($11.00) http://bit.ly/1fAUOfx This dish was a pleasant surprise. The fish was very flavorful with a light flakey texture coupled with a sublime punch of scotch bonnet pepper. This was actually the the best fish I've had since buying fried fish and bammy at a little fishing village of Bluefields, Jamaica. It was not very flavorful either, but very edible. For those who do not know, Traditional Jamaican Jerk is suppose to be slow smoked over pimento wood, much like American Southern BBQ. Almost no restaurants outside of Jamaica actually cooked Jerk like this, they typically just throw it in the oven. STAR RATING 4.0 N O T E S -they make their rice and peas with coconut milk. -this is not much of an eat in place, though they have 3 small cafeteria like tables. Sometimes the tables are not cleaned as fast as they should be. It's better if you get take out. -they are definitely using fresh ingredients to make their food instead of seasoned salts etc. T I P S + $5.50 lunch special is from 11:30 am - 3:00 pm on the brown stew chicken, curry chicken BBQ chicken & Jerk chicken. + they have this uniquely seasoned fried chicken which is a must try. +they always have boiled banana's, dumplin's, white & yellow yam. +this is the first Jamaican restaurant outside of Jamaica that I have seen offer traditional Jamaican Breakfast dishes, such as Liver, Salt Mackerel & Porridge. +they sell off their food very quickly, try not to get the rice & pea's if it's from the bottom of the pot. Its better if you just get more palatable white rice if it's there. + if you have not noticed from my pictures, I prefer to supplant rice with tubular roots. If you haven't tried it before, try it! My review seems to have disappeared....at one point, I rated this 5 stars, friendly service, wonderful tasty food...unfortunately it has gone downhill.... The past several times I have gone in the food is not ready, is not hot, or the service has been rude and poor. The location is usually kept clean in Gold Coast Shopping Center. They have great lunch specials BUT you risk a long wait, possible rude service, or food not ready. I used to go all the time...now I rarely go....and can no longer recommend until these items are fixed. read more

The food isn't even good and it's overpriced but, I've been tiring to support my local businesses However, I'm done this women Ms. G wouldn't dish my food and sell me what I requested, until another customer gave her the go ahead! I'm just a poor lonely Jamerican far from home, looking for the flavors I grew up on. I can't really comment on most of the menu since I'm only interested in the breakfast items of my childhood but I'll tell you this -- The cornmeal porridge and fried dumplings will get me through the door every single time!!! I know Jamaican food and I know it very well! Let's break this review down in segments. Location - Not the best neighborhood but in no way the worst, just don't expect valet! This store is very clean and has a open floor plan! Food - I had the jerk chicken and fried chicken both which were cooked and flavored very well. The rice is OK but really shines when sauce is placed on it. The jerk chicken was excellent and the sauce placed on the rice from it was nice and spicy (just the way I like it). My sister was with me and got a jerk chicken and two oxtails and from what I understand it was really good too. My only issue is that when we asked for oxtail gravy on the side (like in a small cup or some type of very small container) the woman behind the counters facial expression changed and she said that it was an unusual request that she could not do???? Huh? I have ate at many many MANY JAH restaurants and let me tell you people either will ask for certain sauce on the rice (ex: curry or oxtail) or they will ask for a side of the sauce and it has always been given... until now. Because of this I could not get a side of oxtail gravy for myself or my sister as we did not want it on the rice right then and there. Customer Service - Outside of the sauce fiasco the woman behind the counter just seemed like she was "done" for the day. She wasn't horrible but wasn't very happy. Overall it's about the food and the food was good. Is it the best Jamaican restaurant? 1 star because that's the lowest rating possible. I heard the food here was good but after two times Driving over 10 miles and they were closed 30min before they were supposed to, I'll never know. What's worst is that the gentleman inside, possibly the owner, came to the door but didn't open it, to signal me that they were closed at 8:40pm on a Friday night. I eat out regularly, and have never given a restaurant a bad review because it can be harmful to the business and demoralizing to hard working employees. However, the 1st rule in businesses ownership is be open when YOU the owner say you will. This is why small businesses loose out to bigger chains such a Dutch Pot, because of this level of professionalism. So I tried the fried chicken and rice and peas with oxtail gravy and then ordered curry chicken and rice and peas the fried chicken was good but the oxtail gravy was thin like water and so was the curry chicken it was all watered down the consistency of the rice was normal for rice and peas but overall I won't be going back again I went because I looked at the reviews of everyone saying how tasty it was maybe not the day I went I'll stick with Dutch pot instead. read more

Really pleased with my experience at G's restaurant, Thank you Veronica J. and Sean M. for your awesome reviews. This place almost felt like coming to an aunt's house and having a taste of her home cooked meals. The menu is split up into three sections of Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner with only particular dishes being offered at those specific times. Luckily for us, we were in between breakfast and lunch when we came in, so we ordered one item from breakfast menu and one item from the lunch menu. We ordered the Calaloo and Salt Fish Platter and the Oxtail Platter and both dishes were amazing and full of flavor, I really got the comfort of home cooking from these two dishes. Luckily, we ordered small dishes for ourselves because even the small dishes were very large in portioning. We could have very well shared one platter and got a good fill from a small. You also get great bang for your buck here no matter if you order small, medium, or large because the prices range from $7-$12. I already can't wait till my next visit. read more

Also ordered fried chicken but to my disappointment they dont have the usual sweet and sour sauce that goes on typical jamaican fried chicken. They offer u the sauce from either stew chicken, curry chicken or oxtail to put over the fried chicken.
