Calypso reminds me of a Caribbean Fish Shack (Lighthouse Point), with menus and blackboard special. Started off with an Arnold Palmer. Having never tried triple tail before, I was sold. I asked about jerk seasoning and Juan explained that since the triple tail is quite mild I may want it blackened instead so it's not overpowered. That and a side of pineapple salsa plus their "world famous" potato salad. My cohorts: she ordered fresh fried (tempura) shrimp with fries and he decided upon an interesting dish of scallops with pesto gnocchi. I was excited to try Calypso based on the excellent reviews but had a mixed experience. My wife and I started with the house salad with miso ginger dressing, which was excellent--fresh, flavorful, and honestly one of the highlights of the meal. For the appetizers, we ordered the mango wings, honey garlic shrimp, and for our entree split the Caribbean grilled grouper with pigeon peas and rice and sweet plantains. I appreciated the unique flavor combinations and the creativity of the menu, but overall the dishes were underwhelming and lacked the seasoning I was hoping for. Everything was cooked well, but nothing really stood out enough to make me want to order it again. The service was excellent but the atmosphere seemed to cater to an older crowd. I'm sure there's probably a dish on the menu that I would enjoy, especially given how much I liked the salad, but based on this visit, it wasn't enough to bring me back. read more

So I'm adding to my last review of Calypso again five stars. We sat at the bar JULIO is an excellent bartender and very friendly person. Love the quaint spot. What a great restaurant. We have passed this restaurant numerous times and had said over and over we needed to give it a try. Well, last night we finally did and what an outstanding meal we had. First and foremost, the young lady that was our server was super nice, super friendly, super patient and gave great suggestions. The place has that island vibe to it and they do their best to give you that Caribbean feeling inside. We started with the crab stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer. Although the mushrooms were a little small, they had tremendous flavor and the crab was very fresh inside. For dinner, my wife had the crab stuffed shrimp, and I had the fried conch dinner. We were both amazed at how fresh and how good the meal was. My wife's dish came with a good amount of bacon wrapped shrimp stuff with crab meat that were cooked perfectly. The meals came with two sides and a salad as well. I gotta tell you their ginger dressing is excellent for the salads My conch was if not one of the best it was definitely the most tender portion of crack conch that I have had. It was fried to perfection, not too heavily breaded, and delicious flavor. We both had the pigeon peas and rice as a side, which were delicious and my wife had their potato salad and I had their coleslaw which was also excellent For dessert, we had the Keylime pie and much to our surprise. It was quite delicious as well.. This is definitely gonna be a return spot and if you want just good seafood, you really need to try this place. We have dined at Calypso's many times, so I don't know why I have failed to write a Yelp review until now. Better late than never! I guess with my history of coming here, I can absolutely say this is one of the best fish restaurants in Broward. There are a large variety of choices on their standard menu, but you have to check their specials menu posted on the wall to see their limited time offerings. On the specials menu, I was intrigued by the swordfish schnitzel. As someone who only eats fish and seafood, schnitzel is not something I can have. I decided to be somewhat daring and go with the unknown. Our lovely waitress, who was very helpful and attentive, assured me that many of their patrons really enjoyed the dish. I have to say it's been a couple of weeks since I had it, and this dish is still on my mind. It was so delicious in that comfort food kind of way. I only wish that this was something on their regular menu and hope maybe the chef will see if this request. (Hint hint!!) My husband ordered the scallops off the regular menu which came with his choice of side. He said they were fresh and seasoned perfectly. He also enjoyed the pepperpot soup, a type of soup he's never had before. Calypso is usually quite busy. It is open for both lunch and dinner. I know at lunchtime they have a lot of great specials. We decided to stick with the daily specials and started by sharing the Bang Bang Shrimp--absolutely delicious! I also had a side salad with their amazing homemade ginger dressing (seriously, it's a must-try). For the main course, our family sampled a bit of everything. The grilled wahoo fish sandwich was cooked just right and tasted great. Another person at the table had the house dinner salad with grilled shrimp, which paired perfectly with that ginger dressing. I went with the French Onion Mussels, and they were incredible! It's like a French onion soup but with mussels, served with crispy bread and melted cheese. Greeted and seated very quickly. The restaurant has a nautical vibe with dock-themed decorations. My shrimp and scallop burger (I've never had one so I wasn't sure...) Went here for the first time today it was pretty darn impressed. Came with a group of people for a family reunion of sorts and enjoyed an unexpectedly wonderful meal. I love fish and eat it several times a week and so when I find a fish restaurant that serves exceptional seafood I just can't help but offer a high recommendation in this one really is at the top of their game. And I have to say that their lunch prices and portions are an incredible value for such wonderful food. And if the food isn't enough to make, you want to come here over and over again, the welcoming and sincerity of the service will definitely win you over. From the person that greets you at the door to the wait staff to the people that clear the tables every member of the staff makes you feel like you are their most valued guest. I really love this place and we will be back to try more things from the menu. Today I had a tripletail. I am not sure that I've ever seen it in restaurant before having previously only eaten it when I caught it. And that was many years ago. But it is without any doubt, one of my favorite fish to eat. Absolutely delicious and they're simple preparation brought out the flavor even more. I had it with a salad that was so fresh and complemented the fish perfectly. All in all, I love the restaurant and will be back. As I said, I would love to try the other things on the menu, but if Tripletail is on there that day, I am likely to order it again. One thing, especially nice was that we were really here to enjoy the company of family that we'd not seen in a long time. We took up the table for almost 3 hours. First and foremost Allison was amazing. I asked a million questions and she was on point with everything and gave her recommendations. My friend comes here frequently and has raved about it for 8 years. He says it's the most consistent restaurant that always given great service and even better food. They had the hog fish cutter sandwich. It was amazing. Definitely the right spice for jerk. I don't know what I wanted, there were so many amazing options on the menu. I really liked this place. Very clean and well put together. I admit I am no expert on Caribbean food but this was a great meal. I had Mussels special. They were served in a spicy, herbaceous and garlic forward tomato broth. I have had many versions of this dish. This was my favorite yet. Home run. I also ate Jerk Hogfish and Rice with Pigeon Peas. The Jerk seasoning had a really nice kick and a ton of flavor. Everything tasted very clean and healthy. Julio was one of the best bartenders I have ever had. What a great experience at this establishment. Don't let the strip mall setting deter you. There was a wait, but we were lucky enough to snag two chairs at the bar. We started with some house wines which were fine. Then my wife ordered the filet mignon, sweet potato and asparagus. I went with the triple tail grilled, coleslaw and potato salad. Both meals were excellent. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium for my wife and the fish was light and flaky and very full of flavor. Really friendly service and really good food! What more can you ask for? We started with some clams, which were a little overcooked and on the chewy side. But the flavors were delicious. All of the burgers were pretty amazing too. The bread was honestly ok but the seafood was amazing. I got my fish with the jerk seasoning, low-key afraid it would be too spicy for me because I've had jerk chicken before and it practically made me cry. But the spiciness wasn't too bad, it was kind of perfect for me! (Not to say it isn't spicy, if you can't handle spice, you still probably shouldn't order the jerk seasoning.) Decided on having a late lunch, early dinner around 4:30 at Calypso. Good thing we arrived earlier as by 6pm, there were people sitting outside waiting for a table. New to the restaurant and menu, we took our time reading it, often referring to our helpful and pleasant waiter. While doing so, we shared a tasty and tender conch salad. Next came two entrees: Curry Dolphin and Julio's combo of shrimp, scallop, grilled dolphin in a Caribbean marinade. Both were delicious. The interior is clean with a pleasant decor. Our server told us that the original owners were from The Bahamas. Hence there are still many choices on the menu that are either Bahamian or have a Caribbean influence. The choices of fish platters are plenty. Calypso is definitely on the must try list. read more

UPDATED REVIEW I dined at Calypso for lunch with my mom and it was both good and bad - sadly - it was mostly bad. THE GOOD Cleanliness/Vibe - The restaurant was spotless and the new renovation really is good. I've been there since the renovation and the colors are bright and vibrant. The atmosphere is very laid back and island like. It could easily be a restaurant in Islamorada or somewhere else in the Keys. Salad - The house salad with the ginger dressing is always fresh and delicious. That dressing is truly great and that has not changed. Service - The service has always been friendly and welcoming. That has remained fantastic and that begins the minute you step through the front door. The hostess is very friendly and I've never had a rude or surely server here. Always great with the wait staff and front of house. THE BAD - Fried Shrimp -My mom ordered a fried shrimp appetizer. She got a dozen fried shrimp that were all good size. In fact, I wished I had only ordered the fried shrimp app until....we realized that her shrimp had NOT been cleaned. I noticed she was picking off the breading and cleaning her shrimp. When I asked her what was going on, she lifted a mud vein out of her shrimp on her fork and she told me they had not been cleaned. I ordered the fried shrimp entree and my shrimp were jumbo shrimp that had been butterflied (cleaned). However, her shrimp app had shrimp that were large enough that they could have and should have been cleaned. I'm sorry but that's just gross and my 87 year old mother struggled through her lunch trying her best to clean these shrimp that, for some reason, had not been deveined. While my shrimp were cleaned and good, the only thing I would say that would keep these shrimp from being nigh perfect (apart from pulling out the mud vein) is the breading. The breading is, in my opinion, too heavy. I'd eaten fried shrimp at Isle of Palm in several locations in May and every place I ordered fried shrimp had excellent light breading and that really makes a difference with regards to how long the shrimp have to be cooked. I would give my fried shrimp an 8 out of 10, but my mom's shrimp got a 0 because who wants to eat feces. I mean....gross! Potato Salad - This looked so good and it tasted SO BLAND. There was absolutely no flavor. I took one bite and put the bowl aside. The presentation looked great, but the flavor was absolutely nothing beyond that of boiled unsalted potatoes. This is a southern staple that is so easy to get right. I'm not sure what recipe they are using but, and I'm not trying to be snarky in the slightest, Publix potato salad is next level compared to this. Collard Greens - Speaking of southern staple...if you're going to offer collards, there are some things that are just sacrilege when it comes to greens. I have never ever heard of collards made with sautéed onions. The main ingredient for collards should be ham hocks in the pot and they need to be cooked down with those or some form of pork. Apple cider vinegar adds a nice flavor profile for collards, too. However, these were just weird. Having grown up in Pompano Beach, I've had collards all my life and I have never tasted anything so bizarre. The texture was all wrong - these seemed to have been sautéed like kale because they were crunchy. The cut was all wrong, too. I've never seen collards presented with a chiffonade cut. The onions had been sautéed separately in something else and they just didn't taste good. All I can say is that for anyone familiar with collard greens and soul food, this will taste weird, at best. Sadly, I cannot recommend Calypso any longer. However, the few things that I have mentioned from my lunch today are not difficult items to address. A few tweaks to the recipes and I believe they will be back on top. read more

Calypso Restaurant is a casual restaurant located in the Garden Isles Shopping Center along Cypress Road with some tiki island ambiance. Warmly greeted by a female employee, Rachel, who allowed me to sit anywhere in the restaurant which was not busy. As I got settled, I was asked what I wanted to drink. Being my first time here, I was unsure. I was then given a drink & food menu and a few minutes to make my decision. Prices are moderate. The menu had a vast selection of dishes which was influenced by Caribbean cuisine: * Appetizers/soups/salads/sides * Burgers & cutters (island lingo for sandwich) * Entrees/rotis/curries * Meat & poultry/fish & chips * Raw bar platter/lunch platter * Daily specials & desserts * Cold beverages/beer/wine For my drink I had a glass of Stella Rose Moscato which was lightly sweet and crisp. First I started off with a small house salad consisting of romaine lettuce, tomato, shredded red cabbage/carrots and sliced cucumber, topped with honey mustard dressing. It was very tasty. Next came the entree - Stamp & Go which was two saltfish patties served with my choice of two sides (rice & peas and fried plantain). The fried plantains was fried nicely and was sweet, just how I Iike 'em. The rice and peas was cooked to a soft consistency and was full of flavor just like it was made in the islands. Rachel was nice enough to give me some curry sauce on the side since I stated I don't like eating dry rice, and it made the rice taste so much better. The saltfish patties was crunchy on the outside and flavorful on the inside mixed with curry, onions, and red/green peppers. When Rachel came and asked if things were to my liking, I replied that the food exceeded my expectations. I literally felt like I've been transported to the islands...the only thing that was missing was some island music to solidify the vibe. Last I had the bread pudding for dessert.  It was served warm topped with whipped cream and cinnamon....absolutely scrumptious! On the verge of being overstuffed with all that delicious food, I asked Rachel for a container to carry my leftovers home. I also ordered a chicken roti to take home to eat later. A local favorite and totally Florida Keys vibes inside with the decor and food selection. The staff is friendly and efficient. The menu has sandwiches, salads, soups, tacos and a lot of unique curry dishes. There's fresh daily catches on the specials board around the restaurant. We started with this bold and rich flavored shrimp appetizer. It had a little kick to it but tasted very good. Shrimp was plump and tender. I also tried a cup of their clam chowder which was creamy with lots of fresh little clams on the bottom of the bowl. For an entree, I had the Stamp & Go lunch platter which comes with two large salted cod fish cakes. Densely compacted and full of mushed fish meat, these cakes are delicious but too salty for me to eat on its own. I ate all the shredded lettuce it came with to chow down one cake and I could've eaten another plate of lettuce just to finish the other cake. Will be venturing back to try more menu items though! I guess this is not a hidden gem. Monday lunch and restaurant was mostly full. Rachel, our waitress was very courteous and welcoming. Space between tables was generous. But the food is the star here. Fried shrimp were cleary freshly battered and nicely pink on the inside. Conch chowder very tasty. My shrimp and scallop burger with coleslaw was outstanding. The mustard-sauce was the perfect condiment. They have a nice beer and wine selection as well. Don't forget key lime pie for dessert. Hidden Gem in Pompano Beach You walk in and it looks much different than you think it would from the outside, super cute!! There's a tiki bar inside which is where we sat. You're immediately greets by a warm smile, the service was great. There are daily specials with tons of fresh caught fish options and homemade desserts. We were in the Pompano Beach area for a few weeks and a friend suggested we try Calypso Restaurant for dinner. Truthfully, it was the Best Meal during our entire visit! We arrived around dinner hour on a weekday night and it was pretty busy/staff spread thin initially - that all got better as the evening progressed. The service was very good. The vibe is comfortable and casual. A chalkboard shown in the Yelp review pictures has many of their Fresh seafood specials to choose from in addition to a full menu. I have never, ever, had Oysters Rockefeller that tasted that Good!! One of the catch-of-the-day entree choices was swordfish and it was Excellent. There were four of us for dinner and each person had glowing compliments about their meals. Calypso Restaurant is hiding-in-plain-sight in one of those strip mall/plazas and there is decent parking.
