We got category 3's and 4's which was a thrill and roller coaster ride... and because all the guides have on average over 20 years experience, we felt totally safe every step of the way. The route is about 9 miles, so along the way you'll have a few relaxing moments to take in and learn the history of the gorge, water pipeline, and railroad. The guide was also one of the several miners who run the place and his willingness to be patient and share the history of the mine and industry made this one of the most enjoyable tours I've ever been on. And I've been some weird places. The guide let my kids swing the pickaxe and keep the nuggets they loosed from the wall, he ran most of the equipment and explained their history, and you could tell he respected his craft. The tour company was very well organized, and the guides were able to get everyone suited up with proper gear and loaded on to busses efficiently. We received a safety talk on land before entering the rafts and got instructions on how to sit, how to paddle, and what commands to watch out for. Our guide, Charlotte, was enthusiastic, confident, and informative. I really appreciated her clear and straightforward instructions, both on land and on the raft. She also had plenty of dad jokes to last the entire trip ;) Overall, I would recommend this tour for first time rafters of all ages! If I find myself back in the area in the future, I may try out one of the more advanced tours!
