I never thought I'd start a yelp review by saying this place had one of the best salads I've ever had, but here we are. The burrata and beet salad was executed perfectly. Simple enough to taste the quality of the ingredients used, but done with their own flare. Bravo! Don't pass on the oysters or cioppino either. The heat from the jalapeños is wonderful on a cold Marin night. Lastly, service was phenomenal. There was never a moment we felt our needs were lacking and the woman who served us had a full section on a busy Saturday night. Will be back! read more

This was my first time at the restaurant. Food: The kale salad was absolutely delicious as was the rack of lamb. Simply superb. Also, the pesto pasta with peas was excellent, albeit quite rich. The kampachi appetizer was nothing to write home about and the fries were tasty but nothing unique. Drinks: I had the Penicillin. It had way way way too much ice. I would recommend checking out how momofuku in NYC does the Penicillin and copying that. My mom had a non-alcoholic drink. It was good but it was $7! Not worth it. Service: This is where the restaurant falls flat for me and why it is getting 2 stars. Based on the prices, the restaurant contends to be relatively fancy (even if its look is modern and it does not have tablecloths); the service is simply not commensurate with the prices. Here is why: a. Hostess not at all friendly or particularly attentive. Moreover, I asked for a booth seat (more comfortable for my 60+ year old mom) and the hostess said no because 'someone had specifically asked for a booth'. I understand that but then the booth sat empty for the next 45 minutes. That's just poor table management. We had reservations at 5:30 and could not get the booth. Not a huge deal but a bummer. b. Waiter was friendly but too laid back and casual. There is a balance to strike between professional service and cafe-style laid back casual service. This was too much of the latter; just his demeanor and the way he carried himself. Some specific notes: the waiter never offered us bread. We could see other tables had it so I had to ask for it. When I finished my Penicillin, the glass sat empty on the table for 10 minutes. The waiter never cleared it and never offered me a refill (revenue lost). My kid's main meal came out at the same time as our appetizers. That's not good pacing. Everyone's main meal should come out at the same time or you ask the parent if the kid is hungry and their meal should be 'fired' at the same time as the appetizer. Anyway, on the whole, the service wasn't terrible but certainly left a lot to be desired. As such, there are plenty of other places in Marin where I could go and get similarly good food and good service so coming back to the Guesthouse is probably not in the cards for me personally. read more

The noise level at this restaurant is the most memorable thing about the restaurant...IT IS SO LOUD you can barely have a conversation! It looks as if they have installed baffles to help with noise, but it's still really loud. The food is pretty good, though expensive... $32 for basic chicken? Wow! My wife and I discovered Guesthouse about a year back and absolutely love it. The atmosphere is great. The cocktail menu is creative and fun. And the food is awesome. Our absolute favorites are the short ribs and the pork chop, but we have tried most of the menu over the past year and think everything is really worth trying. If I were to say that anything could be improved it would be the desserts, but we don't usually eat dessert anyway so its not that important to us. read more

I finally tried it after hearing mixed reviews from friends. Ambrosia had big shoes to fill. Whatever kinks there were must be out. I sat at the bar which is totally the call. The bartender was great (sorry I forgot his name!) His recommendations were spot on. I had some kind of burrata deliciousness and the a green eggs and ham rendition of pasta. Out an egg on anything and I am in if its cooked correctly. Add pork product and I am in live. Friendly service, carbs that were totally worth it and wine to wash it down. Bellissimo! read more

We went to Guesthouse to celebrate my son's birthday. We started with the truffle fries and crab cakes. The fries were great and I would definitely order them again. The crab cakes would have been better without the white stuff (aioli?) on top. The sauce overwhelmed the delicate flavor of the crab and they were expensive for the size of the order. Two of us ordered the prime rib special and we were very pleased with it. The tomato and burrata salad that accompanied it was amazing. My husband said that the bolognese sauce was the best that he had ever had. They forgot to recognize my son's birthday even though we had specified the event and then added s candle when he was almost done with his desert- oh well.. read more

Really excited to have a new bar and restaurant in a neighborhood with so few options - great bar, atmosphere, menu, fun vibe.... the kind of place you can go on a casual date, with a friend for a drink or with family. The owners and staff are super friendly... And each time I've gone, the cocktails and dishes have gotten better (they hadn't quite nailed it in it's opening few weeks). Let's just say this is my new favorite place in Marin because the Chef is from my old favorite place in Marin The tar tar was amazing, staff is friendly and on it, the short rib pasta was perfect, the lobster rolls are the perfect size, etc. we ordered every appetizer on the menu and it was all good. I just thoroughly enjoyed reading some of the "reviews" on here and they gave me a good laugh. Gotta love the ones who are looking for a "down to earth cheap local hang out spot with good steaks" Seriously... Also the noise level complaints...I'm dying. To you sir who brought your sound meter to the restaurant get a hobby. I overheard a couple discussing the prices and wanted to remind them what county they lived in but held back. trust me this place is a great new spot!! Easily the loudest indoor space I have ever been in ... Think the Seattle Super Dome ... this is a bar, with loud music and some tables. Bring a boring date ... no need to talk. The oysters are out of this world, plated with all kinds of goodies like a jalapeño lime slushy thing (for lack of better words ) and the burger and fries are so good! We were so excited for this restaurant's opening... we kept checking their website to see when they were accepting reservations. We went the first week that they accepted reservations, and as soon as we approached the restaurant the noise from inside was overwhelming... just standing in the entry door we couldn't hear the hostess or each other. Once seated, the noise level was off the charts.The server could not hear us (call OSHA), we could not hear each other, and the people at the next table were jokingly pretending they were doing sign language to talk to each other. Why so noisy? There are zero soft surfaces. No curtains, no fabric, and even the ceiling instead of being acoustical tile (desperately needed) looks like plain drywall. Even in the bathroom with the door closed you could hear the din. How do experienced restaurateurs make this big of a mistake? What contributed to the overwhelming noise was the bar scene -- the cougars have moved over from Farmshoppe but as we know, cougars are very fickle so they'll be somewhere else soon once they realize they can't hear/interview their prospective dates ("How many estates do you own in Ross?") The food was, as expected, delightful, and the service while uneven was very friendly with lots of apologies for the very slow bar service (20 mins for first drink, thanks cougars for clogging it up). Median age was 45 or so in the restaurant and will skew older as the novelty wears off. They have got to figure out the noise thing. Won't go back until they do. Sad, because Marin really needs a wonderful new restaurant and Guesthouse has a lot of potential. read more

My only hesitation was the big screen tv that had the "game" on. Sorry but that's just not classy, it's annoying and distracting. If you want to be sportsing that's great and all, but do it at home or at a sports bar. Having that in a great spot l like this restaurant was just a bummer. If you want great food and a place to actually have a conversation, this is probably not for you. We made reservation at 6pm on a Thursday night. When we walked in, the place was already packed and the bar was overflowing. The 1 TV screen was playing football, but I didn't see even 1 person watching. Why have a distracting TV in such a nice, upscale setting? The maitake mushrooms were delectable, as were the duck duo and cioppino. By the time we left, the bar was standing room only and the noise level very uncomfortable. But everyone was in a good mood, so I guess it worked - except for my sweetie and me. read more

We parked in the back and my bf, his mom and her friend all walked around to the front to be seated while I waited in the car to finish a phone call. When I got out by myself and started to walk around the side, where they've added outdoor seating due to the pandemic, a male staff member ran up to me, cut me off, and aggressively asked what I was doing. When I responded that I was going to meet up with my family inside, he continued, "Do you have a reservation? Where is your party?" And wouldn't let me go. I finally just walked away, and he offered no kind words like, "Enjoy your rip off of a meal!" I have no problem with staff checking on who is entering their restaurant/space, but you don't have to be so rude and unwelcome about it. Yuck. Mixed experience here on a Saturday evening, 6:30pm with reservation. The hostess was quite rude, yet the server was sweet and helpful. The lobster rolls ("our most popular dish") were boring, yet the broccolini was an excellent surprise. The king salmon was good and the mushroom quinoa absolutely amazing, but the gulf shrimp bucatini couldn't have been worse. Marin doesn't have many restaurants, so if you live in town Guesthouse is fine - but definitely don't drive across a bridge for it. read more

We made a spontaneous 5pm reservation, had not back here since it was closed for pandemic. Romantic dinner for two. Heat wave was rolling through Marin, 90+ degrees outside. Host cracked the door open when he saw us standing outside waiting 4:55pm for opening. He couldnt find our reservation, thank goodness I had the email from yelp confirming. He made us stand outside on the sidewalk in the heat while he searched. Finally got seated in the corner by the bathroom when the rest of the lovely dining room was open. Thought about declining the table and sitting at the bar, but we relaxed into it. Food was great, shrimp appetizer was off the hook, neiman ranch lambchop hearty, burger was juicy -stacked high and the cocktails & wine yummy. Service was responsive and great too. Pricey but we dont mind spending for a special night out. Just a bummer that we sat in the corner when we had a reservation. We were in and out. read more

What a fantastic addition to the Marin dining scene! We tried a wide variety of the offerings and literally everything we had was excellent. We enjoyed the caesar salad, kale salad, Mediterranean chicken salad and crab cakes. The salads were all extremely well composed, balanced and brimming with freshness and flavor. The crab cakes were very meaty and flavorful with not too much filler. And the fries! Some of the best ever, anywhere!! Mains included quail, burger and agnolotti. Again, each one knocked it out of the park, but the quail may have been the best I've ever had anywhere. Great bar and great bar scene. Pretty good food, which frankly could be better. Biggest downside is the deafening noise level which I measured on my sound meter at a whopping 89db average and peaks at 110db. Actually OSHA hazardous sound levels--I feel for the staff. read more

We split ahi tartare, kale salad (and neither of us are normally big on kale), cauliflower gratin, the pork chop and the trio of creme brulee. Everything was delish!!!! I really like the restaurant and the decor but the food is way over priced. I went to dinner and ordered the chefs special which was a fried chicken dish with mashed potatoes and gravy with a side of green beans for $28. I'm sorry but 3 pieces of fried chicken are not worth that much; I can go else where and get that for $6. Second off the chicken had a weird sweet flavor, almost like honey. The chicken itself was of great quality if it wasn't for the weird marinade. Third, the green beans had no flavor and no matter how much salt and pepper I put on them I still couldn't get them to taste decent. Save your money and order a regular dish off the menu instead of the chefs special. What a waste of money. read more
