This review is WAY overdue .. like 40 years overdue! It was June 1985. I'm a 17yo girl in Hawaii w a group of graduated HS classmates. I ran into Mitch on the streets of Honolulu hawking his tour and took a flyer. I called and arranged for hotel pickup the following morning. Hands down .. was THE best part of my weeklong Hawaii grad trip! Bright and early, I piled into a white passenger van driven by Mitch and with 8-10 other young tourists (I was the only girl) and off we went. We explored trails, plantations, waterfalls, beaches, snorkeling, and ended up at 60' cliff where a couple of the guys were brave enough to jump into the ocean. We capped off the adventure-packed day with a stop at a BBQ joint. So. Much. Fun. I'm happy to see Mitch is still doing his thing and not surprised by the stellar reviews. He was excellent back then .. I can only imagine how awesome his tours are now. I haven't been back to Oahu since, but when I do return, I'll be sure to take another one of Mitch's tours! read more

Incredible tour of the island. We saw things locals are unaware of and learned history and walked in historic places. It made our trip to Oahu better than any previous trip to the island. We were lucky enough to meet Mitch on the top of Diamond Head and booked the tour for the next day. I highly recommend. You've got to love a business owner who climbs to the top of Diamond Head to find adventurous healthy people who would appreciate his "Best of the Best" tour to holy and spiritual locations. We signed up on the spot for the next available tour date and even though the tour started before my husband usually wakes up we were out on the curb early, eager for the four hour tour. There were about 20 other people on our tour. Mitch took us to four different locations and while driving and while walking and standing at each location we were given a wealth of information about a huge range of topics, all interesting. Mitch pointed out flora and fauna and had stories to tell about how the islands were settled, how plants were used, what it is like living in his adopted state. Not a single dull moment. Mitch was a very knowledgeable and informative guide, knowing a lot about the flora and fauna and history of Hawaii. Great tour for this history and nature lovers. we were taken to about 4 or 5 locations around Oahu that were off the beaten path and hidden from a lot of tourists. The group is small so it was easy to keep up and heard with any questions we had. I would highly recommend bringing bug spray so you don't get attacked by the bugs. Overall this is a great tour however I wasn't a fan of the hikes through the forested areas. read more

If you want a refreshing and informative REAL tour of Oahu, than Mitch Berger's tour is for you. Fairly priced and informative throughout, Mitch's tour takes you to some of the hidden gems of the island from sacred burial grounds, film location sites and areas drenched with the history of the monarchs who used to rule the island. On top of it, Mitch points out medicinal flora and fauna and is a wealth of knowledge in general as it relates to all things Oahu. Plus, you can't beat his energy and his ability to keep you entertained for the entire duration of the trip. Our $40 was more than well spent. The alternative is the over-crowded tour buses that only take you to the tourist traps where you are expected to drop a dime at each stop. With Mitch, he only asks that you leave each spot better than you came upon it. Not a bad price to pay to get a bird's eye view of the locales that mostly only the locals know about. Our tour guide, Mitch, picked us up at our hotel in his bus and we headed out to the mountains. There were about 20 people on the tour, which wasn't too bad. I prefer smaller tours, but I just kept myself up front so that I could always hear what he was saying. He taught us quite a bit about Hawaii and the native culture and which trees and plants were indigenous and the different ways that you can use them as natural foods and medicine, etc. All around very informative and we got to see parts of the island we otherwise would have missed. We saw a couple spots where Lost filmed, we saw some ancient ruins from an Hawaiian King's summer home, some lush and beautiful parts of a rainforest and a gorgeous lookout near the top of a mountain. This tour is definitely worth the time and money. However, if he is offering a hike in lieu of a tour, I'd definitely choose that first. read more

Tour was pretty good. Learned a bit about the island and a bit about Mitch's view on health which was interesting. He mentioned seeing waterfalls which we did, but only from the bus. The biggest thing I wish that was mentioned beforehand was the mosquitoes. Had repellent on but I still managed to get 40+ bites. If I would of known this I would of out long pants and a thin sweater on. So to sum it up I'm satisfied but if mosquitoes love you put on some thin longer clothing so you can hit the beach later without being covered in red dots read more

A few years ago, I went on the "Best of the Best" tour (I think it might have a new name now). That tour was amazing. We got to see all of the sacred sites around the island, learn about the culture and history of the islands, see some waterfalls, etc. Anyway, because of my experience a few years ago (I could have sworn I yelped about it back then - guess not... *sad face*) I decided to call up Guides of Oahu - Mitch, and set up a private tour for my group. It was wonderful! I explained the places that I saw last time, so we went to some new places this time. Mitch made sure to figure out our interests so that he could give us the best experience. I have to agree with suzanne..he loves what he does and it clearly shows but this tour should be called the medicinal tour...I thought it was going to take us to places rarely seen but sacred grounds with the YMCA directly behind it does not count. We ended up doing another tour which was way better. Save your money and do the turtle tour with a woman who is a native of Hawaii. read more

Mitch was awesome. He has been in Hawaii for years, and is a truly passionate guide. He captured all our interest, including all of my 3 boys aged 10-16, and helped us transition OUR experience to a cultural one, seeing the natural and medicinal highlights as we adventured in all the many zones. Mitch taught us about Heiow's, Hawaii's centers of cultural ceremonies, and what an incredibly useful lesson. We then saw other such sites on our own, and had a really great appreciation for their significance. It's a great alternative to crowded attractions. My wife and I had recently climbed Diamond Head for the exercise and the potential view. At the top of the volcano, we were not disappointed with the view or the exercise. While taking in the view, we overheard someone discussing the plants on the Island. Intrigued, we introduced ourselves to the speaker, Mitch. He told us about his tour business and booked a tour for the following day. He picked us up in a bus and we headed up into the mountains overlooking Honolulu. It was very interesting to listen about the different plants and animals on the Island. We exited the bus and went on a walking tour in the jungle. Mitch was informative and very friendly during the hike. One quick note: wear some old sneakers if you are taking the jungle hike! read more

We found out about Mitch after booking a luau. Mitch picked us up at a hotel in Waikiki (he even provided us with cost effective, safe parking options as we were coming from a different part of the island!) and we joined some others on the air conditioned bus. All of the stops on the tour were very interesting and Mitch supplemented everything with in-depth details. Mitch is also a genuine guy and was willing to help with ANY questions we had, either related to the tour or just the island in general. Mitch's tour was one of the highlights of our Hawaii trip. We learned so much and took away a deeper understanding of the history and culture that makes this area so diverse. My ONLY bit of caution: be prepared to get a little dirty! We met Mitch at the top of Diamond Head (he was telling the crowd about his tour, looking to schedule a trip later that day)... that is a tough way to drum up business, so we liked him right away. We had eight of us in the group, including my parents (older) and four kids (younger). Mitch wanted to meet the kids first before scheduling the tour. We learned why Mitch wanted to meet the kids first part way through the tour. He took us to a very sacred and important site where we ran into some native Hawaiians that were very protective of the site... reverence and respect is a must... so if you have very young kids, this may not be the tour for you. I would call the tour "Life According to Mitch" and it is great. Not only does he share with you some sites definitely off the beaten path of any other tour, his insights on Hawaii are fantastic. And if you are into diet, health, and wellness, his knowledge runs deep and he does an excellent job of weaving this knowledge into the narrative of the tour. Mitch knows his stuff and it makes for a very fun and informative four hours. This is a great way to spend an afternoon in Honolulu. We made sure we signed his guest book and joined his Facebook page. If he offers another tour, hike, fishing trip, lecture at an auditorium, and we are back in Honolulu for vacation... count us in. read more

My wife and I met Mitch two years ago at the top of Diamond Head, and after he hold us about his tour we realized that we were not going to be able to go. So he gave me his card and we made it a point to make sure to put his tour on our to do list the next time we were visiting Oahu. Well it was everything we expected, not only the places he took us, but also the information he provided. They say if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is - having said that, Mitch's tour of the "hidden" Oahu is definitely unique and memorable. It did NOT live up to expectations but he's a character and clearly loves what he does. My suggestion though is pay what you think it fair. I bet Mitch would be okay with that. read more

The four hours you spend with Mitch Berger will be one of the most informative and interesting tours you will probably ever go on. Between the stops at a rainforest, ancient burial site, the remains of a king's getaway, a bamboo forest, a waterfall and Pali Lookout, Mitch runs a non-stop, encyclopedic commentary on the history and culture of Hawaii, as well as an introductory course on the medicinal and natural healing qualities of the islands' vegetation. Listening to Mitch's barrage is somewhat akin to being blasted by a firehose of information. It might be too much for some, but one thing is guaranteed - even if you only remember a fraction of what he's told you, you will come away with more knowledge than you would on most tours. Mitch's love and more importantly, his respect for the beauty, the history and the culture of the Hawaiian Islands, makes this a wonderful way to experience that which is Hawai'i. read more
