There is no way those negative reviews are actually for this store. Been there a few times. Each time there was a line of people so I got to witness multiple people being helped by the entire staff. Nothing but courtesy, professionalism and education from all of them. I never sold silver before and the staff there took the time to explain the process and how they set their prices. Steve and family used to be the best around. Best selection, best service, best prices paid. I used to drive down from prospect, 30 miles, because it was worth the ride. Not any more. A recent visit with a low mintage gold 1/10 eagle and a roll of 90% Kennedy hqalf dollars. I was paid 70% of melt for the halfs, and 97% of gold bullion for the eagle. Gold, (as well as silver) eagles have never been sold, or bought, without a premium. That's because they are valued above other countries coinage. Also, paying 70% of melt for 90% silver is insulting since my past experience has been 85%. People that do this understand that buyers like Steve don't get full melt from the refinery and he does have a business to run. However his change in policies regarding the valuation of items brought into his store, make sellers like me question his opinion of a profit. Further, the argument that refineries have paused taking product, as well as offering reduced payment because of the rapid run up in precious metal valuation, and the consequent inundatition with jewelry, coins etc is and old one and prices, as well as common sense, have since adjusted. They will tell you your welcome to take it elsewhere and unfortunately, actually very regrettably for the first time, i guess I'll have to. read more

My son came back from Guilford Coin LLC after he went to sell a bag of silver coins my father had found and had given him a few days prior. He told me how much he got from them when I had returned home and he was excited, and when I asked him how much they paid him I was appalled by what he told me. I had been away on business the past couple days and was not told about his plans earlier. Knew that the number was far too low from the moment he told me but just to make sure I was right before doing anything significant I looked up the current prices and sure enough I found they had paid him nearly 28% of the market value of over 16 ounces of .999 silver. These people are dishonest and are willing to take advantage of those who are potentially unaware of the value of their possessions. I hope that someone will find this information useful before making a significant transaction in the future. read more

Went to get rid of some silver, shady vibe walking in the empty store was asked what I wanted by some punk than he had me go in back room. Guy in the back had the personality of a turd. Asked about silver eagle price compared to regular rounds he told me it's the same. than told me nobody wants silver because it's too expensive and offered $5 below spot I said no, he replied in a douche bag manner what you expecting to get? I told him spot, was going to leave and he offered $4 below spot. I drove all the way there, so I sold some rounds. Called Coins N' Gold in Portland very nice people and they told me they have no silver to sell because its selling like crazy and assured me silver eagles pay more than regular rounds. The owner came forward and asked me what I had and basically dismissed me immediately. He was rude and disparaging. Maybe what I had with me is worthless, but how does he know that I don't have other coins that would be worth his interest, or know others who do? Or that maybe I might want to buy something? I do not understand why a few people have written negative reviews for Guilford Coin Exchange. I have bought and sold a variety of coins from Steve, his daughter, Kate, and others in the store for more than 12 years. By this time, they know me and have always treated me with respect. More importantly, over the years, I have watched them dealing with other customers. It doesn't matter if it is an elderly person reluctantly parting with a small family heirloom because they need the money or a someone who drops $100K in gold coins on the counter and wants a check right away! I've patiently waited in line while they took as much time as necessary to care for and educate someone even if it is a small dollar transaction. It's always fun and a learning experience to listen in and appreciate the wealth of knowledge that Steve and his team have. I had a relative in New York who was a real "gold bug" and had dealt with every dealer in the City. After introducing her to Steve, she came to Guilford for all of her transactions. Very nice guys. Drove up from Fairfield. Any LCS I've been to from Westport to Seymour is the same condescending and negative store owner/manager who doesn't seem to enjoy what they're doing. Not here. Was helped by a young woman and two older gentlemen. All three were pleasant and helpful. Prices below mmost other stores I've been too on some stuff. Higher than i would like on others. They offer a very cool auction wall where you can bid on various customer submitted numis. Didn't buy as much as I had planned but walked out with 10x 1/10 AGE at a very fair price and 2x NTR 10 oz silver bars at a fair price. Will return again. If your not willing to spend a hundred dollars online for the free shipping than this is a great place to consider for purchasing coins or bullion. Thier buy prices for items you wish to sell are generally fair as well. This should be a four star rating but I knocked one star off because this is a funny place to visit. One day you can walk in there and the atmosphere is friendly and on another day they can be somewhat rude. Not sure what the inconsistant manner of that is about but it's noticable. My father and I always used to buy collectable coins from this store when I was little. It is the only store we purchased coins from. I went down today with a multitude of coins that we had purchased from here, expecting maybe $20 from the amount of silver and half dollars I had accumulated as well as whole dollar coins. I am a poor college student so I was very hopeful that Steve or someone would be able to give me a good quote. I sat down with some gentleman in front as he very rudely asked if I needed help, as if it was so difficult to ask! I asked for a simple quote on what my coins would be worth, he poured them out from my bag on the glass counter, and after 10 seconds of looking he said there was absolutely no value at all. How can you say that when I have $6.50 of just half dollars alone in normal value? Pathetic. Don't bother here, they don't want to make any business. read more

Having spent over $500 in the last 6 days, I decided to stop by to pickup some constitutional (junk) silver to continue the quest of getting my granddaughter excited about coin collecting. Since her birth, I would give her Kennedy half dollars, so I wanted to pick up some Franklins and some small gold bars. I walk in, customer left and I asked for the container to be told not today, too busy, customers come in, come back some other day. WOW, spent over $500 in less than a week, expecting to spend maybe $150 on junk silver and buy an oz of gold, $1800 or so and I'm not a customer. Guess not. Worst experience ever!!! DON'T GO THERE!!! I called to find out if they had a specific coin there and they said yes and I asked their form of payment and they said CASH is preferred but also takes bank check and money order so I asked if I needed to bring anything else and the man on the phone said not if you are paying cash. paid for an Uber ride to get there as I am not driving because of a hand injury so when I was ready to pay for my coins (with cash mind you ) the lady there says we need your license to do the transaction. I told her I didn't have it with me as it was a cash transaction ( under any restricted amount ) and I didn't drive there so I didn't know that I would need it Mind you I came from over an hour away. That's when this disheveled man next to the cashier lady said they could not sell any coins (not even 1 coin! )to me without a license for a cash transaction. Well I was not told that on the phone when I called and asked that morning before I took the long ride over there !!! He then said you are doing wrong and you are not allowed to come back to the store - I asked him how am I doing wrong when you or one of your workers told me exactly what I needed to bring with me ? Are you kidding me ??!!!Well I called a higher up legal attorney when I left who will be investigating this place that says you DO NOT have to provide a license unless you are purchasing a large amount (over ten thousand dollars) which was not the case and they were rude obnoxious and definitely did not look or act professional in any way. Buyer beware !!!! Many better and nicer more professional places that will gladly do business during these challenging times without the lies and attitude. I visited Guilford Coin Exchange for the first time early on a Saturday morning looking for gold bullion coins. Their price was great. I knew what they were going for from the major online sources, and Guilford was actually a couple dollars under the online prices, even though I only wanted a single coin. Another shop I had visited in Westport didn't even want to sell me less than 2 coins, and their price was $15 higher than Guilford. The atmosphere in the shop also seemed friendly. There were several people looking at coins, and the employees were letting some of them just poke through various types. I assume they were trusted regulars. But, in any case, I felt welcome. The overall vibe of this place is a real rude & tense one. I have been there three times to this day and I have been "scolded" by the sarcastic smug shop owner because I looked up greysheet on my phone and the owner (He's the guy with glasses and a very VERY smug attitude) got real angry and cocky with me to my face in front of his customers to try and get me publicly humiliated in front of them for his own pleasure. His words were, "Well I don't know what that stupid thing you're doing on your phone is all about, but you better put it away now!" Those were his words. Real snarky attitude and I don't understand why this place has any high reviews. It's 1 star at best. I went there today since I'm down in Connecticut for the Holidays and the moment I walked in, the tense cold friction from the sales people were on display and the owner was no different. God forbid I asked him a price on anything, it's like he didn't even want to be bothered nor make a sale! Overall, it was just a very uncomfortable environment and like I said before, just an overall TENSE vibe throughout it. I think unless you're Joe Retail and plan on giving away your gold and silver to these people, you won't be treated like a respected customer, but instead you'll be treated like a criminal coming off death row like I was.. Let's not forget the fact that I operate a highly successful coin business.
