Boulangerie Guillaume caught my eye unexpectedly. I did not have this place on my list of bakeries to try while in Montreal, but as I was walking in the area I noticed many people holding their distinctive yellow bags. I was intrigued, and since I can always go for some carbs I decided to head in and check this place out. Unlike most bakeries I visited, Boulangerie Guillaume has a much more modern look, and is larger than a standard bakery. Walking in, I was immediately greeted by stairs which led up to the main production area. All of the bakes were arranged on the back-wall perimeter of the space separated from the pedestrians by a glass wall. The color scheme was mostly black to contrast the bright yellow of the bags and signage. The arrangement of the bakes, combined with the color scheme and modern aesthetics, resulted in a stunning, visually striking presentation. I wasn't too hungry, but I can always go for some sweets and their date square looked good. I went with that, along with a cappuccino. The square was delicious - the dates were high quality, and the crust underneath was moist while maintaining its integrity. The cappuccino was also good, a great complement to the bake. Service was efficient, and overall I had a great experience at Boulangerie Guillaume. I definitely want to return to explore more of their menu - I noticed they had some savory items so perhaps for some lunch. Definitely one of the best bakeries I visited in Montreal. read more

It's a serviceable bakery - not sure what the hype is all about. Bread was decent - we tried several among the vast selection available. The olive fougasse was probably the best one. The rest were good texture-wise, but not particularly flavorful. I would skip the Viennoiserie (pastries) altogether. As you can tell from other Yelpers photos, the puff pastry base for the croissants and other pastries is limp, lacks structure, and there's no "flake" to it whatsoever. The pain au chocolat is just plain squidgy, texture-wise. The brownies, cookies, and other novelties are tasty; the date brownie was one of the better items we tried. If I were to offer any advice: reduce the number of items on the menu and focus on improving the Viennoiserie (or: eliminate it from the lineup altogether, since it's the weakest link). I highly recommend looking at the product menu online so you don't get overwhelmed. The pastry is a little dense and thick for my liking but there was lots of coconut flakes and almonds! Herbes de Provence and fleur de sel ciabatta: Great quality ciabatta but didn't really have a. distinct flavor. Potato cheddar mini fesse: My favorite of them all. Montréal in my opinion- goes right with everything. Plus bread is an extremely important part of Montréal culture, and rightfully so- because we never want to leave here without eating their Breads. We had bypassed Guillaume on our way to 'afternoon tea'- so wanted to make a move afterwards. Right in the Plateau-Mont-Royal section, Guillaume has practically any and every Bread imaginable. We picked up a mouth-watering Baguette that was both kind of chewy inside but had the crunchiest crust outside- not to mention, had a nice narrow width. I honestly don't remember the price- but for whatever it's worth- it was freaking great. Not sure either on whether they make their breads in house- but for quality this good, I honestly can't imagine they're made elsewhere. Baguette isn't the only thing here- these folks carry Flatbread-types filled with Olives, they have Brioches and tons more. If you're a bread lover, come here. And seems like everything they bake turns into gold. But listen...I can't tell if this is THE best bread bakery in all of Montréal- but ratings do speak for themselves. read more

We tried cheese croissants, cheese breads, brownies, caramel apple/cinnamon raisin type pastries along with a chocolate banana scone and everything was delicious. Note that as of a couple months ago they have moved to a smaller location, where you can still see all the goods on the wall and you move cafeteria style by asking an employee to select what you want - once you've gathered all your bags/tray you pay at the counter on the other side. In terms of variety and freshness I would definitely recommend the baked goods - only miss for me was the chocolate brownie which was on the very dark and bitter side, not sweet enough. Walked by this a few times & was always captivated by the interesting decor! The space is super modern/industrial-chic & the smell of bread definitely drifts out onto the street. I think their bread items are definitely better than their puff pastry type items, which makes sense given their focus. All the bread items we tried were incredible though; the perfect amount of chewiness. The standout for me personally was the fig & cheese bread! I regularly drive 25 minutes to pick up bread at Guillaume! Each time I try a different loaf but I always get their olive fougasse, Its the best in the city and it even stays fresh the next day (IF I don't eat the whole thing the same day haha). I love that in addition to great French style bread they also have fresh pastries. The "mushroom head" is really delicious as well as their almond croissants. Oh my god, the last time I was at Guillaume, they were located in tiny cramped up digs. No longer! I had a bit of time to kill before I met up with a few friends for dinner so I decided to stop in and check them out. The space is awesome with a wide open air front beckoning you in. While I was there, it was a constant stream of people coming in and out to grab a few things. Steady and continuous - people appreciate quality local, homemade bread here. The variety of bread and pastries is astounding. I wanted to try everything but it was just me so I settled on two things. What I really liked about Guillaume is that they actually have a couple spots inside to sit at! Pretty rare for a boulangerie to have that. There's also a couple of benches conveniently situated outside if you'd rather people watch. - Bun aux pomme ($2.50) - sweet, sticky glaze. The apple bun was actually bigger than I expected. Perfect pre-dinner snack. - Navette betterave/sumac ($1.50) - beet and sumac bread. I've never seen this before but the colour is gorgeous. I saved this for a midnight snack later that evening and it was good. Really liked the chewy, airy texture although the beet and sumac flavour was pretty subtle. This is one of those spots where you want to try everything behind the counter. Jealous of those that live nearby and can pop in whenever to pick up bread. This would be my go to spot! read more

Clean, tasty and hip! They have a wide selection of breads as well as smaller savory and sweet pastries. I really loved my cheese and fig pastry! I also ordered a orange and chocolate pastry that was enjoyable (I was impressed because I generally don't like orange mixed with sweets)! They also have a selection of coffees, drinks, mini pizza-like pastries and much more. The bakery is located on St. Laurent which is a lovely street to stroll down on a sunny day. Right next to the restaurant is a little park where you can sit and enjoy your pastries under the trees. Just please don't feed any bread to the birds!! It's not healthy for them to eat bread!! I would recommend this location to anyone (the music is a little loud and more "hip" so your grandma might not want to stay too long inside so just tell her to wait for you in the park ;) )! With visits to Au Kouign-Amann and Les Co'Pains D'Abord already complete, my last stop in the battle of the Croissants is Boulangerie Guillaume. This throwback bakery, offering fresh breads, sandwiches, and teas also carries some delicious pastries and mini cakes. With metered street parking just outside it's doors, and a courtyard just beside it, you can enjoy a scrumptious snack under a canopy of trees on a nice summer day. Common to French architecture, the Bakery is narrow and long. Croissants, pastries and breads line the walls immediately to your left as you enter and is impressively one of the most extensive selections you will find. But at the end of this display is a small display case housing some real treats... brownies, tartelettes, and mini cakes. Although I was here mainly for the croissant, there was no way I was going to leave with only that. My purchase consisted of the Butter Croissant, Queen Elizabeth Mini Cake, Bread Pudding, and a load of fresh artisan bread. To recap my criteria in Battle of the Croissants, my perfect Croissant isn't about the butter, it's about the texture, the appearance, and the crumbs! A good Croissant will taste delicious, a great Croissant will leave you wanting more. The outside should be crispy and a nice golden brown with white near the folds. The inside should be light, soft, and airy on the inside without being chewy. Most of all, it should hold together and produce very few crumbs. Butter Croissant. The color was a nice golden brown with some spots of burnt orange. it looked nice and crispy, but turned out softer than it looked.The inside was light, soft, and airy, Butter flavour was not overbearing, but definitely present. Unfortunately, the crust was slightly on the chewier side in comparison to Au Kouign-Amann and Les Co'Pains D'Abord. 4,0 stars. With that said, here are the final results in Battle of the Croissants: Appearance: Boulangerie Guillaume, Au-Kouign Amann, Les Co'Pains D'Abord. Outside (Crispyness): Les Co'Pains D'Abord. Au-Kouign Amann, Boulangerie Guillaume. Inside (light and airy): Three-way tie. Cohesion (Crumbs): Au Kouign-Amann. Boulangerie Guillaume, Les Co'Pains D'Abord. And the winner of this round of the Best Croissant is.... Au Kouign-Amann! (based on 3,2,1, point scoring system). Runner up is Boulangerie Guillaume. In all honesty, the differences are so subtle, you'll enjoy your Croissant from any one of these places, especially if you're from outside the province. If you're a resident, then you'll probably be more picky honing in on these subtle differences. There are no losers here, just different levels of pickiness. Queen Elizabeth Cake. Visually, this cake looks absolutely delicious! These mini cakes have a slight muffin top and are garnished with nuts, and coconut flakes, then iced with a sugar cream glaze. If you love muffin tops, you'll love this! The cake itself is a date/nut blend, and is more dense than a muffin. Slightly on the dry side. But despite this, the top is totally worth it! 4,0 stars. Bread Pudding. Not visually appealing as the Queen Elizabeth Cake, the Bread Pudding at Guillaume's was a sleeper, and it totally stole the show! This take on the classic was sweet, buttery, and very flavourful. Not overly heavy, this cake is the perfect complement for those who need a pick up while on the go, or stay, it's perfect either way! 5,0 stars. The next time I'm in Quebec, I'll probably do a Battle of the Chocolatines. While I give Guillaume's Croissant 4,0 stars, overall the bakery is 5,0 stars for it's freshness, variety, and creativity in their products. My family and I were walking along Saint Laurent blvd when we noticed this bake shop and decided to buy some goodies. (The long line outside the bake shop was also a good sign this was probably a local foodie joint) We bought about $20-$25 worth of bread including the whites chocolate champignons, beet bread, almond croissant, cheesy bread, some small chocolate loaf bread and 2 other pastries that I can't seem to remember. Overall there wasn't a single bread that we didn't like. My niece LOVED the cheesy bread along with the chocolate bread and the beet bread. Really glad we decided to stop here!
