It's not a relaxing thing as her mom to take her to, and Jenny is now our absolute go to in perpetuity for Milly's haircuts 2-3x a year. I asked for a trim, face frame, and long layers and I told her that my wedding is in 2 months and I need my hair longer for my updo. The hairstylist disregarded what I said chopped off 3 inches for the trim and then chopped off 6 inches for the "layers", which are not cohesive at all, it looks like I am wearing a helmet. True story. Charlotte, at the Guillotine, cut my hair on September 12, 2023. On October 17, 2023 I had Mohs Surgery for skin cancer. It turned out to be pretty extensive. After the Mohs surgeon finished, a plastic surgeon came in to close it up, including a graft. I bring that up because the plastic surgeon bathed my temple and some of my hair with Betadine solution before he operated. They wrap your head and face with paper towels. OK. It was 90 minutes with the plastic surgeon, and then he left me with his nurse to clean and bandage me up. She washed my temple and hair with saline-soaked cotton swabs. It took a while, and then the wraps were taken off and she said, "Did you just get your hair cut? Your hair looks beautiful. Who cut your hair?" You KNOW it is a great cut when the haircut is a month old and this is what the surgical nurse says with cotton swabs in her hand. Made me smile. read more

Unfortunately I received an awful haircut at this salon. It was not the style I requested; in fact the cut is what I specifically said I did NOT want. I showed Yvonne plenty of photos and she seemed to understand, but she took off FAR too much hair, about 3-4 inches more than what I asked, and gave me an uneven cut. It will likely take a year to completely grow out this cut which is way too short for me. I was very clear on what I wanted and what I did NOT want but ended up with a lopsided version of the style I was trying to avoid. Yvonne was perfectly nice, and I think she sensed I was unhappy because at the end of my visit she basically told me not to worry because my hair grows fast. Not fast enough. read more

I've been going to Guillotine for 10 years for my haircuts and have never been disappointed. Yes, the prices may be more expensive than other salons, but you wear your hair every day so I've always been willing to justify it with cost per wear. Tip: check out the "Meet Our Team" page before you book your appointment. The titles of the stylists correspond to the price of the service ($50-70 for a women's haircut). The titles go from designer, creative designer, master designer, to expert designer and are based off of years of experience. So if you're price conscious I recommend booking with a designer - even the designers are great at what they do. Marissa has been my go-to girl since she was a designer years ago (she is now a master designer). She remembers the little details like how I part my hair in the middle, angle it in the front, and get long layers throughout. The salon is full of light and warmth, gorgeously decorated, and the waiting room is stocked with baked goods and a keurig machine. I think it's pretty rare for a salon to retain its stylists for years, but Guillotine has managed to accomplish it. read more

I would have given a 4 star if it weren't for the cost. I'm a Korean, so I always go to a Korean hair salon. And the place I originally had an appointment at yesterday decided they didn't want to wait more than 10 minutes for me to show up, and expected me to find my cellphone on the passenger seat to call them that I'll be running late while I'm driving. And because that place even had closed an hour early, I was desperate to find some place that could fit me in at the last minute. Guillotine was willing to take me first thing in the morning because there was no one left to do my hair and because they were also about half an hour to closing when I originally walked in. And considering it's not an Asian hair salon, I'd say they did pretty decent job! Now, the major turn off for me (and this is where it dropped them 1 star) is the cost. At the place I normally go to, they charge only $30 to $35. At here, I ended up paying $70. It's because they were so nice about willing to fit me in as early as possible that I didn't drop to 2 stars. I'm not 100% sure if I'm going to be returning here for my next hair cut in at least 6 months to maybe next year since I typically get only 1 haircut a year on average. But what I will say is that they did fantastic job on an Asian for a non-Asian hair salon! Especially since I'm fully aware that we Asians have bit of different hair compared to whites! read more

My first time here and was kind of disappointed once I got home from the salon. I have to say it was very easy to make an appointment online, I was able to get in the same day. But I was not happy after my haircut with Jenny once I got home and looked in the mirror. Before she cut my hair I told her I wanted a trim, and that I had layers in my hair that I was looking to grow out. She cut my hair wet, then dried it a bit and then cut some more. Once I got home I realized she had cut a good 3 inches off and had just chopped off the longest layer of my hair. I had asked for a bit of a U shaped cut as well, and it was just cut in a straight line. But the worst part was when I realized she had cut the face framing pieces completely lopsided. She didn't part my hair down the middle after she dried it like she had when it was wet. The part was messy and just completely off center for the first inch or so into my hairline, then zig zagged back to the middle. And while she was cutting it felt like one snip had been very blunt, but I thought I was just being dramatic. Once I got home I realized I was right, and the left side of my hair was noticeably longer than the right. Overall the appointment felt rushed and I don't think she was really paying attention to me. I fixed it on my own because I didn't really want my hair to be at the mercy of another person again after that, and I have to say I don't think I'll go back here again. I'm disappointed, I've heard good things about this place, but this one experience was enough for my lifetime. read more

I've been going to Maryann at the Guillotine to get my hair cut for several years, and I've been highly satisfied not only with her talents, specifically, but with the salon overall. While having a conversation isn't your first reason to come to a salon, the beauty professional's ability to build a rapport with you and understand your expectations is part of what brings you back. Maryann has a great ability to draw you out, not just to chat during the cut, but to understand your lifestyle and then recommend the best way to style your hair. As an indication, I regularly get compliments on my hair WEEKS after it's been cut. That says a lot about Maryann's ability to gauge her clients' lifestyles and design a cut to suit them. Just as important, she's very good at setting expectations on what can be accomplished given the character of the customer's hair (not that I've ever made unreasonable demands, LOL). On the very rare occasions when the cut didn't grow out quite to my expectations, she asked constructive questions to figure out what she could change to achieve the look I was going for, or whether there was another alternative we could try. In short, she treats it like a collaborative consultation, rather than trying to push a specific look on you or getting offended by your feedback. I trust her implicitly. It's a full service salon for hair, nails, makeup, facials and massage, and it's very clear that they've taken a very thoughtful approach to the way they do business. While the prices are pretty much in line with most of the better salons in the area, the small touches make you feel valued as a customer as you would at a more expensive place. The entire staff, from the receptionists to the shampooers to the stylists, are friendly and inviting, and you get the sense that they truly want your business. Having worked in retail, I understand that any business wants to increase the units per transaction, and salons are notorious for pushing product on you after the fact. The Guillotine takes a very subtle approach, and never have I felt pressured to make that additional purchase. It's refreshing after some of the experiences I've had at other places! All in all, I recommend the Guillotine highly. While it's a bit busy on Saturdays (especially during wedding season), you never feel rushed. read more

When I moved to New Jersey, I was so scared to get my hair done (you know the stereotype - big, frizzy, highlighted). I went to the Guillotine on a recommendation, and I have been going ever since (5 years!) I get my hair done by Katherine - she is the best stylisy/colorist I have ever gone to. I don't even have to tell her what I want, she just does her magic and I love it every single time. She did an ombre on my hair last fall and I have gotten hundreds of compliments on it. Definitely worth the money! I now live in Northern NJ, and I drive the 45 minutes here to get my hair done. Being new to the area, I was in search of a salon that I could trust with my hair and I'm extremely satisfied with my decision to go to Guillotine. It's easy to find (right above Gap Kids in downtown Westfield) and I loved the openness of the 2nd story salon. It was a beautiful day when I went and some of the windows were opened to allow fresh air to be let in. The staff is very friendly and make you feel welcomed and comfortable. My stylist was Catherine and, like the previous reviewer, I felt she was perfect for my hair type which is curly. Although I did not get the Ouidad technique done, Catherine still gave me a wonderful cut that took a lot of weight off my hair but still kept it fairly long. Anyone who has every had a waxing of any kind knows it is not fun. So you have to visit Renee. She doesn't wax she uses a practice called sugaring which is far less painful and worth every penny. I've been a client at Guillotine for a couple of years now, since I first moved to New Jersey, and was surprised to find I hadn't reviewed them yet. I love my stylist, Jess. She's a rock star. She knows my (difficult) hair. She makes excellent suggestions. She's just amazing and a lot of fun. I get compliments on her work constantly and I am very happy with my hair. Lynn, the salon owner, is great - if there is ever a question or issue, she's accessible and willing to discuss and correct. Tara handles my brows beautifully and is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. I do see other reviews mentioning their front desk staff. I will say that in the last several months, something changed at their desk and not in a good way. Lynn tells me things will be improving. I really hope so. That's the only reason this is a four-star review instead of a five. The salon is beautiful, clean, comfortable, centrally located, and has convenient hours. Absolutely love this place! I've had a lot of stylists over the years I've frequented it, but my wife and I both became regulars of Jes D. and never had a bad experience here. The staff is very pleasant and professional, the whole place is huge and clean, and everyone goes out of their way to make you feel welcome. Sure, you'll pay more than you will at - say - SuperCuts, but you'll get a haircut that you actually like. If there's anything to be taken away from The Guillotine, it's that the waiting area is a bit small... but thankfully they don't usually keep you waiting for long, so it's a non-issue. Just moved into the area and my husband got me a gift certificate for Guillotine Salon & Spa for a pampering service since I'm pregnant. Regarding the actual service (I ended up going with a Facial Massage) it was really nice. Renee did a great job of making me feel comfortable and my face glowed (according to my husband)! As part of the service they also did a moisturizing treatment on hands and feet which I thought was a nice bonus. My only complaint is the actual room. It was TINY, and faced the street so it was noisy. The windows have some type of wooden curtains that did not serve to block out any noise or much light. The ambiance would've been a lot better if the room was darkened and if some effort was put into reducing the outside noise. Overall though, good experience. read more

The *one* time I saw someone else I was extremely disappointed and have gone back to exclusively only seeing one of them since. Since college, I've tried going elsewhere as I don't even live anywhere near Westfield anymore. However, NO ONE has yet to cut my hair even a fraction of as good as the two of them do. My only complaint is that a, it's not closer to my home. B, it's impossible to get last-minute appts with either of them and C, I wouldn't exactly call this a relaxing experience as a result of the volume of clients they serve, but that's just evidence of it being a great salon. read more

Sigh. I WANTED the Ouidad specialty SUPER expensive haircut to be my curly hair's savior. Sadly, it was not- my hair was destroyed by this technique in January of this year. First visit was the beginning of 2013. Catherine had a lot to work with, so I was pretty satisfied. I went again in the summer of 2013, and that time...the cut was just okay and I walked outside and it frizzed into a beautiful...lion's mane? I justified the paying of the ridiculous amount for my broke college budget because it was "Such a great cut! Just for curly hair!" Okay, okay, so I went for a third time in Jan 2014 and this was The End. The end of my dreams for a beautiful Ouidad specialty SUPER expensive haircut. My mid-back length curly hair was not so much shaped as it was hacked at, but it was thinned. THINNED to the extent that my hair felt incredibly light by the end. It felt TOO light considering the little she had cut off length. When I got home, I pulled it back into a pony tail, and it stuck out of my head like a sad little 2 year old's ponytail. I cried over my hair, which was thin, flat, lifeless, and no longer had the wild curliness I had tried to tame before. It was completely uneven as well. It looked so bad even my friend who came along with me gently asked, "So...how much did you pay for that haircut?" It took a solid six months to start to grow out. I will never go back nor will I ever pay that much for a Ouidad specialty SUPER expensive haircut. I have fine curly hair, but lots of it. Why in heaven's name she thought it was an excellent idea to hack out the back through that thinning comb is beyond me. PLEASE think twice before you take the SUPER expensive Ouidad specialty haircut plunge. I can't believe I spent over 300 bucks on these haircuts. What a waste. read more

I really wanted to like this salon, but I won't be back. The woman who cut my hair was very pleasant, but did not give me the cut I asked for and showed her pictures of. I asked for layers, but got the one-length style that I was trying to get away from. I only get a cut every 8 months of so, but now I will need to spend the money (again) to get it repaired in a month or so after it grows out a bit. Disappointing. read more

It took me a while to find a salon that I could call my own, but then found Guillotine! My stylist is Cathrine (Cat), and she's great for me because she uses the Ouidad technique. Ouidad is a technique of cutting and styling curly hair that works best for me. If you have curly hair and have not tried a Ouidad, you are missing out. A Ouidad costs more, but it's worth it. If you don't have curly hair, try Cat anyway! I bet she's great for any hair type. In addition to being happy with my stylist, I also really like the salon as a whole. It's clean, beautifully decorated and the staff is really friendly. And, it's in Westfield, my favorite town in NJ! read more

Went there for the first time last week because of the high reviews. Just moved from NY to NJ and looking for a local salon. Will never be back again. Terrible haircut. I had to book my former hair salon a day later to fix the mess they made. I spent so much money between the haircut here and the haircut again that I want to get a refund. But I won't do that. I just won't go back. The entire experience was awful. Loud, crowded, clicky atmosphere. There is a reason why New Jersey isn't the fashion capital of the world. A colleague of mine's wife works at Guillotine so I decided to check it out. I was happy I did! Nancy was my stylist, and she was wonderful- did a full consult each time I went in and did a great job each time on the cut and color (I even tried ombre highlights and they looked great). I must be honest and admit I'm not a "regular" at Guillotine, but I've gone enough times to now know that I am not going back. The first time I went I left feeling "ok". My haircut looked good, but my stylist didn't listen to me completely and kind of left me feeling like I got tricked into this new look. The second time I went, I had a horrible haircut. I even went in with a "do whatever you want" attitude, and left feeling like they didn't even cut every section of my head. This third (and final) time, I am now done with Guillotine. The woman cutting my hair clearly had no idea what kind of look I wanted or how to achieve a look remotely close to the one I wanted. Perhaps I should have brought a picture book. Several time throughout the haircut I had to tell her "no I hate my hair that way". I am very disappointed in my cut. I do have to say, the staff is extremely friendly and welcoming and the level of professionalism is outstanding. Cleanliness is a little hit or miss. They keep the entrance clean and the stations hair-free, however, the shelves and bottle storage is rather cluttered and could use a few good wipe downs and the host counter could have far less visible clutter. Overall, for the price I am paying at Guillotine, I would like a haircut that I leave happy not just "content". read more
