I must be honest and admit I'm not a "regular" at Guillotine, but I've gone enough times to now know that I am not going back. The first time I went I left feeling "ok". My haircut looked good, but my stylist didn't listen to me completely and kind of left me feeling like I got tricked into this new look. The second time I went, I had a horrible haircut. I even went in with a "do whatever you want" attitude, and left feeling like they didn't even cut every section of my head. This third (and final) time, I am now done with Guillotine. The woman cutting my hair clearly had no idea what kind of look I wanted or how to achieve a look remotely close to the one I wanted. Perhaps I should have brought a picture book. Several time throughout the haircut I had to tell her "no I hate my hair that way". I am very disappointed in my cut. I do have to say, the staff is extremely friendly and welcoming and the level of professionalism is outstanding. Cleanliness is a little hit or miss. They keep the entrance clean and the stations hair-free, however, the shelves and bottle storage is rather cluttered and could use a few good wipe downs and the host counter could have far less visible clutter. Overall, for the price I am paying at Guillotine, I would like a haircut that I leave happy not just "content". read more

Horrid Experience for a long term client I have gone to this salon for over five years but this time I had the worst experience of my life I had my hair partially highlighted from Morgan who has been good in the past but really sucked this time. She did not listen to my request to do two tone highlights and instead gave me a bright red partial foil and then colored ALL my hair red! Apparently it turned too light so then she slathered on more product to make it darker but it has not worked She was running around all the time and gave me all of five minutes attention, I had to towel dry and comb out the tangles from my hair by myself! and when I got home and it dried finally, the color of the highlights is almost an orange which is terrible and the rest of my hair is colored red which I did not ask for at all More than the horrid hair, its the whole salon atmosphere and experience that has left me with a bitter taste in my mouth One main reason you like a salon or a particular person there is because they develop a relationship and listen to you and treat you with respect. Their job, along with doing good hair, is also to listen to the client understand their needs and explain the process of the appointment with interest and attention. I was most disappointed that I did not get this after being such an old time customer just because it was a busy day and my stylist had maybe overbooked herself. I would have preferred to re schedule and drive down the 40 miles I do again for another time instead Surprisingly bad experience for which I was charged a whopping $135 which I was not told in advance either. They made no attempt to make me happy or repair the damage and Morgan just slipped away somewhere to avoid taking any responsibility for her shoddy work Sorry to say they not only ripped me off but ruined my hair and refused to accept any responsibility for it. Honestly, this salon is way over rated. I went in for a consolation and it seriously took me 5 minutes. Every salon I have ever been to has always taken atleast 25-30 minutes (minimum) to get to know the client and what they need.. but this stylist just seemed to only care about her next client( paycheck ). Well that's not how it works. When a client comes in for a consultation and is expected to spend that kind of money on hair then she should be treated accordingly. It took me longer to drive and commute and waste my time coming there than it did for the lady to just babble and not seem like she was interested. Then not to mention she had no input and just agreed to whatever I said even when I told her I had no idea on the processes or what I wanted to get done but claimed she was an "expert". And to top it all off the prices are insane !! If possible avoid this place at all costs !!! Don't waste your time or money !! read more

What a rip off told us my 12 year olds trim would be $35 then charged us $66 and didn't even blow dry her hair. Completely over priced for a trim they should have honored the original price given. Never again for my 3 daughters read more

I got fuschia ombre hair done at another salon recently. The color had faded, and I had an event this weekend. I just needed a single process color to refresh it. This is something so simple that a trainee could do it. My usual salon was booked, so I tried to find another salon to fill in for me. The name of this salon amused me, so I called them, explained what I needed and they fit me in same day. They have the wrong address for their business on their website (108 Central Ave), so I drove around and got lost until finally calling them and getting directions (228 Broad St). 108 is actually a McDonald's. I let them know that they had the wrong address on their site and they actually argued with me that it wasn't wrong. OK, whatever. Right or wrong, the info on the site will not get you to the salon. The only parking near this salon is pay parking in a Starbucks lot. It's not the most convenient. The reason this was the worst salon experience of my life was because they actually turned me away once I got there. Apparently Guillotine is stuck in the 70s or 80s because they don't have fuschia dye or any bright colors for that matter. You mean to tell me that if your salon specifically doesn't do something that is standard at probably every other salon, your reception staff isn't trained to let people know that when they call so they don't waste their time? Nice. I have never, not since the early 90s encountered a salon that didn't carry bright colors. At the very least, they are used to tint normal colors various shades. They had some brand of bright color dye that no one had ever heard of. At least they were nice about it and were honest that the bright colors they had don't show up very well on people's hair. (Why carry it, then?) This was such a hassle. I really wish the receptionist would have at least told me that they don't cater to edgy hairstyles. I literally blew an entire evening during a work night wasting time on this place. If you want regular black or blonde hair this place might be OK, but since they seemed to not know much about color period and the stylists all had 90s arched eyebrows and muddy makeup on...no. This salon is very Jerseylicious. As in the TV show Jerseylicious with all the painted up ladies that have 90s makeup on.There is nothing wrong with looking like that, but that just isn't my style. I guess I'll have to go to NYC to seek out a more fashion-forward salon. read more

Was thrilled to be able to call on a snowstorm Friday and make appt for 30 mins later. Upon arrival, I specifically requested that I put a tip on my charge. I explained I only had the charge card on me for payment. I was told that it was not possible. I left the salon. The receptionist had no issue with losing a short notice appt and revenue for the salon as a result. Unaccomodating. read more

The salon is very nice, but I won't be back. I came here several times and was frequently ignored by front desk staff. While my stylist was skilled, her unfriendly personality made me uncomfortable. I'll take my business somewhere else, a shame because I really wanted to like this salon. read more

Nice environment and a great price for a nj salon, however it leaves a lot to be desired in regards to the service. I have had my hair cut a few times here and a manicure done once. The manicure held up, but it looked really bad. They also only have one nail tech available at all times, so forget going with friends. The haircuts that I had were ok, but when I went to a different stylist (who was a friend) she asked me where I was getting my haircut because there was no technique in the layering that was done before (at guillotine). On the plus side, they do have coffee and bagels on Saturday mornings in the salon! I should also mention that my husband goes there for his haircuts and loves it. Tried Guillotine for the first time and had a wonderful experience with Catherine. It's very difficult to find someone good at cutting and styling curly hair, and Catherine did not disappoint! I was worried someone would try to up-sell me on the Ouidad cut as they are trained to do that in addition to a regular cut, and I'd have to embarrassingly decline. But fortunately that wasn't the case, and I got exactly what I asked for. I usually have my hair blown out after getting my hair cut, but didn't bother today as she offered to not only style my hair curly but also provide me with instructions on how to do it myself. How I've gone so long getting my hair cut at reputable establishments and no one ever bothering to do this is a mystery! I'm quite pleased with the results; I've got a completely new style and new styling tricks up my sleeve, and will be back again in a few weeks! read more

Wasn't going to post a review but....I have gone to the salon numerous times for a Ouidad haircut. These cuts cost 100$. That's fine but I am not sure if I was actually getting a true Ouidad cut, since the "procedures" used by the various stylists varied so dramatically. One of the "trained stylists" put a HUGE amount of pomade on her hands and proceeded to coat my hair with it. Ouidad pomade should be only a small pea sized amount. I found a new salon. Less expensive, beautiful cut.... Stylist told me exactly how she was trained at the New York salon. One of the stylist at Guillotine told me that she learned the technique watching a video. I am so disappointed. read more

This place is pretty nice. I had my hair cut by Kat and she did a good job and I felt that she really listened to me. I am in the awkward phase of growing out a bob and she helped me find a cut that would ease the transition. I am new to the area and may still shop around some other salons before I commit, but this place is definitely in the running! read more

I've lived in Westfield my whole life and heard great reviews for the guillotine. This summer, I thought I'd try it out. I have long and thick brown hair. I wanted an ombre style so after looking at their website, I figured it was best to go with the Salon's owner: Lynne. I told her what I wanted and SHE pointed out a picture in a magazine of what she was going to give me. It was a perfect faded ombre. When she finished with my hair, it looked nothing like I thought it would. Judging by what she showed AND told me, I thought my hair would gradually fade from brown to blonde at the bottoms. When I saw my reflection after it was over, I was very disappointed. She didn't give me an ombre at all. She gave me brassy highlights that started halfway down my head, yet she also highlighted my bangs. There was no fade at all and it wasn't even and fully colored like an ombre is supposed to be. There were streaks of brassy, orangey brown throughout my hair. I was extremely disappointed because it just looked like I got bad, out-of-the-box highlights done over a year ago. It was what a novice would have done when they thought of an ombre. Not only was it disappointing, but I spent $140 dollars on it without even getting my hair cut. Then, I stupidly went back a few weeks later to get my hair blown out for a wedding. A girl named Catherine blow dried my hair. I don't know why I didn't do it myself. I guess I wanted it to look extra nice so I went there, but I went home and redid it anyway because it was too flat and my bangs looked like they were stuck to my head. I will never go back again. Total waste of money. I've had a much better experience since then at Salon Visage in Westfield with Nicholena. read more

I went to this salon this past weekend. I have extremely curly hair and was in need of a haircut but a drastic change so I met with Catherine who specializes in curly hair and is trained under the Ouidad salon so she was very insightful in working with my hair. She listened and helped select a style. She wasn't quick to just cut my hair as most stylists tend to do when they see the amount of curly hair I have. And since this was a drastic haircut for me she was great! The salon is in a very cute town of westfield right above the Gap Kids store. The front desk was extremely polite and the salon was very neat and clean. I would definitely recommend this salon and especially if you have curly and unruly hair ask for Catherine she is great! Tips must be given in cash so be sure to have some handy since you cant charge that on your card. read more

I have been going to the Guillotine for a few years, and cannot rave enough about this salon. Everyone is so friendly and the coffee and cookies, or cheese and wine is always out for your pleasure to enjoy. I have been with Lynn and if I need something done she is always accommodating to get me in asap. (I am really bad on scheduling ahead!) I have my make up done there by Renee and my hair blown out by Val for my sons wedding, and I was amazed at the transformation these ladies performed. They are always busy which I like to see in a hair salon, yet you never feel rushed or have to wait for any service. Kudos Lynn to you and all your staff!! read more

This was by far the worst haircut experience that I have ever had. My experience started with Kate, my hair dresser, picking me up 25 minutes late. She wreaked of a cigarette and her attitude was unapologetic. She asked me how I wanted my hair cut and I specified by saying please keep the length because I would like to donate it next summer, when I get my haircut next. She proceeded to cut my hair with my head upside. I've never cut hair before but I have also never seen this technique nor would I ever recommend it. It makes no sense and she clearly has no idea what she is doing. She cut 6-8 inches off my hair when I asked for a minor trim. It amazes me that what seems to be a sophisticated salon would have someone like this working there for 20 years. I will now have to wait 2 years to donate my hair. Most of all I am disappointed that I didn't walk out while I waited for almost 30 minutes. She salon needs to either get rid of this employee or change their management. read more
