Blackened Shrimp Po Boy with Chicken and Sausage Gumbo and green beans.

We are in our RV and traveling the southern part of the US. Lunch time in Vicksburg MS and wanted to try something local. Ordered takeout of 2 crawfish pies (for later), Fried Oyster Po Boy with Okra, Shrimp Po Boy Blackened with Green Beans, Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, and Seafood Gumbo. OMG this was the best Po Boy I've had. The oysters were fried just right and were nice and succulent. The Shrimp had such good flavor with the blackened season. The Okra was not a bit mushy but it did lack salt. Both gumbos were really flavor and had a nice slight kick in the end that crept up and was not overpowering. We would definitely recommend this place! I saw a lot of reviews that they are slow, even so it is definitely worth the wait.

Decided to try this place after putting it off the entire work week. Well I should have continued putting it off. Now if you are a fan of paying a lot of money for a little bit of food then this may be the place for you. Definitely not worth the $21 plus the 4% credit card fee. I ordered the West Bank Catfish ( blackened catfish served with a crawfish sauce over a bed of rice). Now this dish did come with a lot of the crawfish sauce which drowned the little bit of rice it came with. Now let's not forget the catfish ( one tiny fillet split down the middle) which was actually pretty good but it was one of the tiniest pieces of catfish I've ever gotten at any restaurant. The overall taste of this dish was okay but most definitely not the real flavor of a Creole Etouffee.

I was given the task of finding a restaurant to go to for lunch while traveling through Vicksburg, Mississippi. I'm skeptical if Yelp is the right way to go because I've come to realize that not a ton of folks down in small towns in the south really swing to using this as a way to seek out good food and local spots. But hey, I gave it a whirl and this spot as well as a biscuit named place popped up as potential winners. My dad really wanted a good gumbo spot so this won. They also had fried tomatoes on the menu and that was key for picking it. Visually, it doesn't come across as a cute restaurant. It's in a strip mall for one thing. But taste wise - pretty darn good. You can opt for boiled seafood or go the gumbo route. Fried shrimp and catfish baskets, po boys, steaks, burgers. I ultimately went with a small lunch of a cup of seafood gumbo and a side of hush puppies. But tried with appetizers the fried green tomatoes and boudin balls. Thoughts overall: The gumbo was quite good. They even include baby crab legs that I managed to cut my finger open on because I'm stupid when it comes to opening them. Tried my dad's wife's full sized crab legs and that was an interesting experiment. The soup was good, could use a little more of a kick to it. The fried green tomatoes again, excellent but not the best I've ever had. I'd like them thicker in cut and a puffier batter maybe. The crawfish cheese sauce that came with the tomatoes was amazing. I'd eat that on its own. Hell. Boudin balls were kind of a stand out item. Very moist and spicy and full of flavor. The deep fried oysters my dad was eating, not my cup of tea. The hushpuppies - exactly as I like them - sweet and without chunks of corn. The way bite sized corn bread should be. I'm probably in the small percentage on how much hatred I feel about corn nuggets appearing in food. Everything was a-okay. Not completely blown away but it was good and for the price quite worth stopping by.

Just a few miles from Louisiana but Vicksburg is a small town, so we had to rely on our fellow raters to find a Cajun restaurant. Again, they came through - the Gumbo Pot had some good offerings. We had a dozen Charbroiled oysters ($28), Seafood Gumbo (10), Red beans/rice (7), and fried green tomatoes (10). The Gumbo was excellent, as was the crayfish sauce that came with the tomatoes. These could compete with the best we've had elsewhere. The oysters were good, but not great (see my review of Pearls Oyster House in Memphis), as was the red beans/rice. The tomatoes were just OK - disappointed that they were breaded with seemingly only corn breading. The service was very good, and there was no wait (at about 6:30 pm on a weeknight). We felt the prices (above) were reasonable. We considered going back as there seems to be a lot of highly rated restaurants in the area which were permanently closed, but did find one (see Rustys Riverfront Grill).

Quick Review for a Quick Dinner Stop Item 1: Taste of the Bayou (choice of three soups) -seafood gumbo: Really taste the crab flavor! Has a crab in it. This was my favorite from all the soups I selected. The bread that it comes with is flakey on the outside. Best way to describe it is Philsbury biscuit having babies with a dinner roll. It was truly amazing. Item 2: Crawfish pie - loaded with crawfish in the creamy filling and the flakey crust is to die for! Item 3: Boudain - wow... my first time having these and I am in fall. They look similar to large hushpuppies but aren't dry. With the first bite in the middle, you'll see grains packed together. It's savory, it's packed with variety of seasoning, and delicious. You cannot go wrong with anything that is fried here! Customer service was top-notch. I love how respectful and attentive my waitress was.

My wife is a Louisana native and I'm a lifelong Virginian. We were traveling by and happened upon this place and it ROCKED. Don't be fooled by the simple exterior. The food is awesome and the staff was friendly. If the amount of take out business being done says anything; it's that this place is local's fav. My wife had the shrimp and grits and I had the shrimp po'boy. At the end of our meal the owner was going to table to table checking on the tables and even gave us some free bread pudding to go as a treat after chatting. Southern Hospitality!

Start with the bread pudding, you will thank me later!! Ordered chicken and sausage gumbo and grilled chicken salad. Gumbo was decent but chicken salad did not have a lot of chicken on it. GET THE BREAD PUDDING....it's white chocolate and DIVINE! read more

5 stars all day long! Very welcoming place. I had blackened catfish with crawfish etouffee on top with green beans and hush puppies. Hubby had blackened shrimp with okra. Both dishes were delicious! Then the bread pudding was served! Hubby polished that off as I was stuffed. Will definitely put this place on our restaurant list for the next time we travel East! read more

Best Gumbo I have had from a restaurant. The prices are right and the staff was friendly and professional. NeNe was such a great waitress and brought us out some bread pudding to try. I have never, in my life, had bread pudding that was so good. The owner, Perry, came out and visited with every table to ensure they were happy with their food and service. He stopped and chatted with us and was so personable. He showed us pictures of their future plans. He told of his family and the origins of his recipes. The food and service was so good that a couple of days later we chose to try something else from their menu. The Catfish and Boudin Balls did not disappoint! We did get it to go and they forgot to put some of the order in the bag but delivered upon request since we were staying right around the corner. Highly recommend this establishment for their food and service. read more

Hubby and I gave Gumbo Pot a try on our trip to Vicksburg. Love love loved it. Waitress was very friendly and efficient, kept our iced tea glasses filled and kept checking in with us to see if we needed anything. I had the "Taste of the Bayou" which allowed me to select 3 different dishes to try. I had the seafood gumbo, red beans and rice, and crawfish étouffée. All were delicious although my favorites were the seafood gumbo and red beans and rice. I had crawfish étouffée two other times in my cross country trip in Ruston LA and at another establishment in Vicksburg. Gumbo Pot had both beat (and a a more reasonable price). My hubby had the crawfish étouffée and fried shrimp and loved them both. Don't let the unassuming location prevent you from trying this outstanding little gem. read more

This down-home spot with ultra-friendly service was a perfect choice for four hungry adults after spending the entire day at Vicksburg National Military Park. Recommended by our inn-keeper and he wasn't wrong. The food was just really really good. Grilled catfish, fresh salads and homemade dressing, and excellent gumbo. I can see why this place is a favorite for so many locals. We loved it! read more

My boyfriend and I were traveling from Nebraska and were looking for a local place to try gumbo for the first time. For starters the staff was AMAZING! The waitress brought us out a free sampler so we could try gumbo before ordering it blindly. On top of the service the food was amazing. Everything was hot and delicious. After the meal our server brought us bread pudding on the house since we wouldn't be able to come back. Best bread pudding I've ever had. I am from New Orleans . I decided to stop at the Gumbo Pot in Vicksburg MS. This place is top notch with their food. Very reasonable priced for a seafood place. I had the chicken and sausage gumbo for appetizer , boiled crawfish for meal and the best white chocolate bread pudding I ever had in my life!! I highly suggest a stop by at this place !! read more

Having tried the Gumbo Pot for an adequate number of times, I think I can safely say that their food is okay at best. The first time, I was not super impressed with their roast beef sandwich as the roasted beef was way too salty than what I have had elsewhere. The bread didn't seem very fresh either. However, the fries were oh so good. I was going to be back to try the gumbo, duh! I tried their catfish lunch and also a po-boy sandwich later. On both the occasions, the food was entirely forgettable and tasted like freshly thawed and heated up to serve. It is probably the closest to a fast food chain quality food that you can find in a non fast food restaurant. Enough said! The place is usually pretty busy in the lunchtime and yet the service is decently fast. They have lots of seating place and also a small bar. read more

I came to Vicksburg for work and decided I wanted Gumbo for lunch. I searched Yelp and Gumbo Pot showed up in the area. The rating was good so I gave it a shot because it was just around the corner. I bought a large and believe me it wasn't large at all but it cost 13 dollars. The flavor was not good compared to the gumbo i had in New Orleans. The waitress was nice and the place look clean. read more

On the suggestion from friends we stopped at the Gumbo Pot. We just left and WOW! Very good. The atmosphere and service was great; but the food stole the show!!! The shrimp and grits were perfectly seasoned and cooked. The Bang Bang tacos were outstanding! Since it was our first visit they gave us bread pudding and it was awesome! We were definitely full so got the bread pudding to go. We will enjoy the rest of it later. If you are in Vicksburg or passing through highly recommend!!!!!!! read more

We eat here every month. on our way now, in fact. It!s an hour away, but worth the drive. You can't beat the price on the boiled shrimp or crawfish baskets. Lindsey usually waits on us, and is quick, friendly, and courteous. Two thumbs up! The restaurant is just the right size, and just the right ambiance-can go in dressed for a party, or dressed casually. read more

Dinner on a Tuesday. Service was really good, food wasn't bad but somehow didn't provide that cajun tastebud experience. I appreciated having grilled catfish with a clean flavor. The hushpuppies were dry, the greens were bland, but not greasy. They also serve a great cocktail. read more

Our first visit....we really think it is very good. We ordered the trio of gumbos /soups. We always order our rice on the side. Of the three, red beans & seafood bisque beat the seafood gumbo. Also ordered trio of baked oysters. Huge oysters! Of the fried pies, the crawfish pie was better than the beef. Also had an order of the mustard greens. They were great! Next time will have the fried green tomatoes and the shrimp & grits. read more

We tried the gumbo, crawfish etouffee, shrimp & grits, and oysters, thinking this is the part of the country where they know how to do it right. We liked the oysters, but found the rest to be a little meh. Adequate but nothing to get excited about. The crawfish etouffee did have a nice kick to it, but if I were to return, only the oysters would stay on my list. read more

Overpriced and poorly stocked lunch buffet left me regretting this choice... I didn't receive a menu after being seated, so I didn't expect the almost $20 bill. Buffet lacked variety and the food had probably been under the lamps for a while. I did enjoy the wall decor. read more

Took forever to get orders taken, profanity music playing out of the kitchen the while we ate. We ask waiter to say something and nothing happened just agreed with us that it was bad choice of music for that time. Food was good tho. read more

We all got the West Bank meal, it's a fish on top of rice with crawfish etouffe on top. My friends liked it, I did too, but my sides were cold. Which were rice with gravy and baked beans. The best part about it was the blackened fish I got but the etouffe just tasted like it has been sitting. The water, you could tell was tap water. Tasted like pipe. Now I'm from Texas maybe I expected too much. read more

My first time and I loved it! As a business traveler, I love finding local places to eat. The service was excellent and the food was amazing. I had shrimp and grits plate and white chocolate bread pudding. Both excellent. Lemon cheesecake is delish as well. I went with a friend and we shared our plates. Close to perfect! Had the fried okra, shrimp basket with hush puppies and cold slaw, and shrimp and grits with sweet potato fries. Everything was very good. Sweet potatoes were bland and there weren't very many shrimp in the shrimp basket (we ordered extra to solve that). But other than that, it was great! Nice people, pretty quick service. Will go again! read more

None of the food was bad. If was mostly decent, but it earns a 3 because the service was so terrible. My husband had a shrimp po'boy and said "that was a 3 star po'boy- it was meh". We also had the soup trio which included seafood gumbo which was good, shrimp bisque also just good, and the crawfish etouffe which was almost completely uneaten. Although I am not sure if that was due to flavor or the fact that is was not quite like warm when it hit the table. The shrimp boil was fine. I had four shrimp boil over this week long vacation and it would rank 2/4. The biggest disappointment was the fact that there was a seafood buffet that there were no signs for nor Which the waitress told us about. After 40 minutes of waiting for a table and 15 of being ignored at the table and then 20 of sitting after we ordered, we saw people coming from the other side with several of the foods we had ordered. It may have been a different story had we not waited so long and been able to try the buffet. Overall the food is okay, some even good, but don't go if you are in a hurry or really hungry because that will not work. read more

Catfish lunch today. Catfish was perfect. Seems like they use a light cornmeal batter. Maybe a cornmeal flour. Greens were great. Okra was awesome. Staff was friendly and bathroom was quite clean read more

Amazing experience. Definitely treated like family here! Called ahead to plan for a group of 25 and they were ready! All the food was amazing and the service was top notch. We had crawfish, and the white chocolate bread pudding is hands down the best I have ever eaten! Seafood gumbo was delicious and everyone's plates were licked clean! Can not say enough about the wait staff and how well we were treated by everyone. Can not wait to go back! read more

We saw some dinner rolls being brought to the table but we were not offered any so we asked and they are free. So make sure to ask. They are yummy little yeast rolls with some sweet (maybe honey) butter. I tried a Bahama mama that was tasty and we liked the fried calamari (7/10). This place is a mostly seafood restaurant with a few good options if you don't or can't eat seafood. We had two in our party that does not eat seafood and they enjoyed the blacked chicken. The mozzarella sticks were also tasty. The start of the dinner was the Redfish with the craw fish cream sauce. DE-licious!! I enjoyed the seafood pasta. The only thing you need to know is that you must order a fried green tomato BLT. In my entire life I have never intentionally ordered a BLT. To me, this is the most dumb idea for a sandwich I have ever heard of. Until now. This is quite possibly one of teh most perfect sandwiches I have ever had. It is so great that I wanted a second when I was done but it definitely would not have been as good later as it was fresh. Amazing. Service was as friendly as one should expect from a roadsie shack such as this. The one worker took our order, made it, delievered it, and gave us some pork rinds with their homemade hot sauce to try. That was a solid thing to do as it made me buy two of their hot sauces stored in old coke bottles. Just come here. Order the BLT. Thank me later.

Sticky Floors and Salty Disappointment While passing through Vicksburg, my family decided to stop at this restaurant based on the glowing reviews--but unfortunately, our experience didn't live up to the hype. The first red flag appeared as soon as we stepped inside: the floors were sticky, setting a less-than-appetizing tone. Hoping the food would make up for the atmosphere, we placed our orders with optimism. My husband and I both ordered the Rosey Special Gumbo. While the flavor of the broth was decent, the rice was noticeably undercooked, which affected the overall enjoyment of the dish. We also tried the boudin balls, only to find that they were nearly raw in the middle--something that shouldn't happen with fried items. The most disappointing dish, however, was my son's crawfish étouffée, which was overwhelmingly salty to the point of being inedible. Despite the positive reviews, our visit fell short of expectations. We left disappointed and won't be returning or recommending this restaurant to anyone else. read more

Honestly I found two items on the menu I liked out of all of it and just kept ordering that. Red beans and rice with sausage and the gumbo. Everything else is bland or fried.
