Great place to carbo-load before you hit Great America! Small place, I don't think there was any seating. Located in a strip mall. Full disclosure: I showed up 20 minutes prior to close (2:00 PM) and asked for the "Closing Soon Special" (which isn't really a thing) and the guy behind the counter gave us three free donuts with our six donut purchase. Yes, that is affecting my review (deal with it). They have a great mix of old favorites (vanilla/chocolate donuts and long John's) as well as maple glazed (with bacon, if you like -- and I like!) and purple yam (so delicious!) with Oreo topping or plain. Best donuts ever. Wait a minute, I need to repeat that last sentence to emphasize how much I mean it: best donuts ever. When it comes to donuts, I don't really need all the bells and whistles. For me, I find joy in your standard original glazed yeast donut. And it is seriously the best original glazed yeast donut you will ever taste. The consistence of the donut is soft and the combination of the dough and glaze just melts in your mouth. Ugh. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. I know that many people come here for the ube donuts, which are also terrific. Definitely one of their staples and a must-try. That said, I really haven't had a donut here that didn't get hoovered down with such satisfaction. Yes, this place is a bit of a hike if you're not located in the north suburbs, but they do sell their donuts in select coffee shops in the city, as well as some other suburban locations. Never again. The donuts are ok and there is wide variety and a unique selection not offered at other donut shops. My issue is with the help. This is a family run business. They need to get family members with a vested interest in the business to help and greet customers. People who will listen. They consistently make mistakes, giving the incorrect donuts. They fill the box behind the counter and out of view and then tape the box closed making it impossible to quickly check your order. The donuts from Gurnee Donuts definitely live up to the hype. I've been trying to get my husband to go with me and it's finally the day! The main reason why I chose Gurnee Donuts, not only for their awesome Yelp reviews, but to try their Ube donuts. I read that they only have Ube donuts on the weekend, but we got lucky on our first try. THEY HAVE UBE DONUTS ON CHRISTMAS EVE, which wasn't on a weekend this year. My husband loved the Ube flavor donuts, however, I wished there was a stronger taste of it. It's just personal preference. I think I prefer original gazed donuts. We gotten a few of the original Ube donuts along with a few of the sprinkled ones. I didn't realize there were other varieties of the Ube donuts. I'll have to give that a try in the future. I really like the fruity pebbles on original donuts and the knotted donut logs/twists. Can't go wrong with classics. Donuts are so fresh, chewy, and soft. Since it was our first time there, they offered us an additional donut free of charge. My husband called it a bakers dozen. A dozen classic donuts will ring up at $12.99, but if you can a mix of classic and speciality, it will ring up more. Our first time, we did a mix of classic and speciality and it rang up to be about $20 with a medium black coffee. Our second time, it rang up to be about $15 for a dozen of classics and a small black coffee. They did offer us a military discount which I don't think they normally offer. The staff has always been helpful and nice. Overall, would continue to be a patron of Gurnee Donuts to get my donut craving fix. read more

Top notch donuts - alway fresh and lots of options to choose from - and if they don't have something in the case, maple glazed for example, sometimes they can whip one up from the stock in the back. They have a handful of donuts with neat/unique flavor combinations and all the staples (glazed, Boston creme, filled, powdered, coconut, etc). The glazed is among the best they have to offer because it tastes like a true yeast raised donut, has a nice glazed shell and gets the right amount of gooey when you take a bite. Perfect with a cold glass of milk or hot coffee. The only reason I don't give it five stars is I'm comparing to other donut shops in Chicagoland and it isn't quite to the level of Stan's or Do-Rite, but it also isn't far behind those at all - and it is worlds better than that run-of-the-mill chain donut place. read more

There were a couple people in line with me but the workers were very efficient in getting everyone taken care of. At first, I was devastated thinking they ran out of Ube donut for the day but alas, I saw it behind the counter. Since I believe in treating myself, I asked for a dozen. My choices included: Red velvet, ube cake donut, maple bacon, and apple fritter, just to mention a few. The lady was putting out more donuts and when I asked what it was, she gave me one to try! Honestly, it might have been because I looked like a mess and she felt bad, but hey, that is still quite the customer service! Now the important part. The donuts were fresh and super chewy, just the way that I like them. Surprisingly, they tasted as good as they looked. I've never tried ube outside of halo halo (Filipino dessert) and I was pleasantly surprised. Since it was a cake donut, it helped cut out the sweetness and the coconut added a good nutty flavor. I've had this place bookmarked on my Yelp for a really long time now and finally got around to checking this place out. I've heard and read so many positive things about their ube donuts so I was super excited to try them. I ended up trying the coconut ube, the glazed ube, the red velvet, and plain glazed. I reallyyyyy love donuts, but I thought they were all just ok. Maybe ube just isn't my thing. But I liked how all the donuts were really fluffy and moist in the inside. I've been venturing further and further afield to try new apple fritters, and the latest excursion took me all the way to Gurnee. Every once in a while, on a random day off, a trip up or down 94 brings the promise of discovery...or disappointment. The flavor of this fritter was really good. It also had a nice crisp exterior and not too much glaze. The big problem was the interior, which was underdone to the point of being downright wet in the center. The fritter wasn't even that thick, maybe an inch at most. In contrast to the over-moist fritter, the chocolate-coconut cake doughnut was dry (or stale?) to the point of hardness. Hrm. And the chocolate icing was very, very sweet. I also tried a boston creme which was all right. If I lived in the vicinity, this would definitely be a regular stop--you've gotta support your local independent doughnut shop. Perhaps I would find that the wet/dry issues were an unfortunate fluke. But I can't see making another trip this far to find out. read more

I wish I could make another visit to this place, as I really enjoyed it. We got a chocolate covered red velvet donut, a blueberry donut, and one of their speciality ube donuts. They were awesome enough to throw in a few extra donut holes with my purchase! The red velvet donut was good and the thickness of the chocolate and how on point the chocolate glaze was made it good. The blueberry donut was a nice thick delicious cake donut. The Ube donut was something I never had before (I would like to actually taste ube now!) and I can't really pinpoint what it tastes like, but is a nice sweet donut and a tasty frosting. Yum! Yum! Yum! My husband and I had to try Gurnee Donuts after we heard that they won Donut Fest not too long ago. It is a very unassuming place tucked away in a strip mall. I love that there aren't any gimmicks to it! It's a simple place with a couple of tables and that's it. I LOVE that it is family owned! :) The first time I went, we ordered a variety of donuts; cinnamon twists, traditional cake donuts, chocolate glazed, red velvet, Boston Cream, and of course...the award winning ube donuts! The cool thing about the Ube donuts is that you can get them plain or with a topping of toasted coconut, nuts, or just icing. To be completely honest...my favorite was the cinnamon twist! It is sooooooo yummy! I crave that donut!!!! It's nice and fluffy! Yummy! My tummy was really happy. I'm so sad that Gurnee isn't super close, so I can grab a donut more often. I guess it's good for the waistline! Haha! The donuts aren't pricey either. A lot of the gourmet donut places are like $3 for a donut...not this place! You can get a dozen donut holes for $2! Filipino pride! When I first read about the raving reviews of the award winning "Ube" donut, I knew in my gut that there's Filipino love going into those donuts. Ube (purple yam) is a famous starchy vegetable like potatoes, taro and other root vegetables, that we enjoy making desserts from in the Philippines. My mom made the best Ube Halaya(purple jelly) when I was growing up.. Sorry, I got carried away. Anyway, back to Gurnee Donuts.. I went to Gurnee Donuts at around 8:30am today, Easter Sunday(they open at 6 am until around noon to 2pm, or when they've sold out their donuts). Once I entered the donut shop, I did not have enough strength to take pictures inside because the oh so good smell of freshly made donuts was overwhelming! There was a line of customers ordering boxes of donuts but there were a couple of staff who were on top of things. I got the Red Velvet, Ube cake glazed, Ube topped with coconut, and a few chocolate glazed pieces. Everything was fantastic. Not too sweet and yet the flavors stood out. Each piece was packed with the sinfully goodness of a donut. My favorite is the Ube topped with coconut. The coconut had little crunch on them and went so well with every bite of the Ube cake. The Glazed Ube was very good as well since the little crunch from the glaze, covering the donut added the yumminess level on the ube cake piece(same goes for the Red Velvet). Fast, friendly and efficient service. I had to ask if the lady who helped me is Filipino...she is! The owner is married to a Filipina who created the recipe for the award winning Ube Donut. Woohooo! I will come back for sure to try the other drooling worthy products that they have. The glazed blueberry is on top of my list next time. Fyi, the Ube products are only sold on the weekends(Sat & Sun) and available only until they run out so get there early if you want to try them. read more

I am not a big donut person at all, or a sugar fiend in general. But I do love taking car trips over the weekend. Zoom zoom, little Prius! Today's adventures led J and I to Milwaukee, with a little breakfast pit-stop in Gurnee. Yup, the home of Six Flags and every chain restaurant you can imagine. BUT, great things can happen in Gurnee and this place is one of them. Small, local, family-run, and located in a strip mall (...these are a few of my favorite things!) I fell head-over-heels in love with their red velvet donut. It has white icing on it and sprinkles. YES. RED VELVET DONUT WITH SPRINKLES. Not only the prettiest looking donut I've seen in a while, but it was SO delicious. Perfectly moist (super impressive compared to other cake donuts I've had), perfectly sweet, and with that textural crunch from the rainbow sprinkles... this is essentially happiness in donut form. Their raspberry jelly donut and frosted blueberry cake donut were really good. 4 donuts only set us back around $5, AND you get 4 free donut holes with your Yelp check-in. Eat these! The worker was so generous when I stopped in. She gave me a free boston cream donut for cryin out loud! Now personally I'm not a huge fan of filled donuts, but I really can't complain as it was free...This place also advertises that they'll give you free donut holes after checking in on yelp, so that's awesome. I announced I was checking in and she stuffed tons of donut holes in my bag - all of which were of the yeast-raised variety with a light sugary glaze. Truthfully, I wasn't a fan of these guys either, but I'm more of a cake donut gal so that probably explains it. Their buttermilk donut is reeeeal good - dense interior with a sugarily-crunchified outer portion. Easily my favorite. The red velvet was pretty good and looks beautiful, a deep red in color (see pics!) I must say that it wasn't especially flavorful though - all you taste is the slight sugary-glaze which coats the outside of the donut. I should have skipped on ordering the cinnamon sugar; it was decidedly dry and nothing special. And I'm proud to declare that I successfully resisted my urge to order an apple fritter!! They were peering out at me from the glass display case, and just by glancing at them I could tell that they were the kind I liked. Dangerous. One day... As a Filipino, I came here mostly to try the ube donuts but I got a variety of items to get a taste of everything. The ube donuts are definitely the best donuts that they have. The dough was so moist and soft it would practically fall apart in my hands when holding it. The ube flavor of the dough and icing was subtle yet perfectly balanced. The oreo or fruity pebble cereal toppings would accent the ube flavor well and give each donut a different flavor profile. The other donuts were a mixed bag. I tried almost every type they had and nothing was spectacular but they were all decent. The cinnamon roll donut was definitely the best, after the ube donut, as the dough was fluffy and the cinnamon flavoring was a nice touch. The old fashioned donut was also surprisingly good, crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. The apple fritter was fairly good as well with a crunchy outside and apple-filled dough that was soft and flavorful. The bear claw with apple filling had a strange, unpleasant taste as if it had gone bad somehow. Overall, the ube donuts are definitely worth the trip from the city and depending on your flavor preferences you might also enjoy some of their other offerings. read more
