I bought two bagel sandwiches: a sausage egg and cheese on an everything bagel, and a bacon egg and cheese on a sesame bagel. I have travelled a lot to include New York City, so my comparison will be against those. The bagels miss. The crisp chewy texture just isn't there. The everything bagel was too salty. The inside of the bagels are fine... not great, fine. The egg, sausage and bacon are cooked fresh so that is a huge plus. The interior is nice. It is open, and with the separation of the ordering and dining areas, it helps with the noise. They seem to do a lot of carry out as you'd expect. The service is counter service. Anyway, for the area it is a decent bagel. If you are looking for a New York bagel, this isn't it. read more

I know how my friends felt about the place vs I felt is a bit different. Location is Instagramable. Only good thing about this place was they were away from the Libertyville downtown or else we wouldn't have even gotten parking. IT WAS BUSY, LIKE A LOT BUSY. Teens serving your bagels like an unorganized shop. I feel my first meal of the day should be more calm and well made not undercooked. This place is definitely charming and within an earshot of where we used to live which is nice. My hubby ordering a sausage, egg and cheese on everything bagel while I ended up ordering a Dixie. Both sandwiches were good and decently priced. I've ordered from Bagels for both pick up and ate in house. Both experiences were alright but I prefer pick up more. The customer service is alright. I find myself ordering through the phone better because those that I talk to are more friendly than those that I encounter in person when eating in house. When I get an itch to have some unique bagels, I definitely will continue to go to bagels by the book. Stopped into Bagels by the Book when in the area. They had a great variety of bagel and cream cheese options. Beyond this, they offer bagel sandwiches, bowls, avocado toast, lunch sandwiches and beverages. I decided to skip on getting coffee but got the Old Standby Bagel Sandwich (bacon & swiss cheese) on a Garlic Bagel. I enjoyed the size and flavor of the sandwich but was a bit expensive at $8. They had plenty of seating inside and offer wifi if you wanted to work there. Even on a weekday, this spot was busy! This is a charming and delicious little breakfast spot! I loved the ambiance, the mural on the wall is beautiful and features some of my favorite prolific individuals. They also have a little party room if you wanted to host a small gathering. The bagels are great! Fresh and delicious, with lots of variety. The cream cheese options are phenomenal as well! I had a strawberry bagel with feta cream cheese and it couldn't have been more perfect. Toasted just right and liberally topped with cream cheese. When you do things "by the book," it's meant that it's done strictly by the rules. I found in my visit that Bagels By The Book doesn't seem to operate like that and that's entirely a good thing. I'm an early riser and unfortunately it seems, the rest of the world isn't. Bagels By The Book (BBTB) opens most days at 6:30 am so that's a good 90 minutes before most breakfast places open. So that's means I can bring a platter in to the office (unworthy coworkers) when most times I have to purchase the day before. Although I came in for a bagel, my eyes were drawn to the bowls. I ordered a Boho Breakfast Bowl -- 2 egg whites, avocado, arugula, tomato, pesto drizzle, and everything cream cheese balls -- and I could have potatoes or riced cauliflower! I chose the cauliflower. The muffins, breakfast sandwiches, and of course, the bagels, all looked pretty good! I will purchase bagels or muffins for my next business meeting. BUSY BUSY BUSY! This place is a hot commodity in Libertyville. Bonus for it not being in the downtown area making it extremely easy to find parking. Service was decent. I waited about 15 mins to get my order, but again, it was filled with customers dining in and carrying out throughout my time there. I got a cheddar jalapeño bagel with veggie cream cheese and a coffee. Flavor of the bagel was delicious. It was a little under cooked to my liking but still pretty good. The cream cheese was OK. It had the consistency of a thin spread vs a thiccccck cream cheese that I typically prefer. Coffee was standard, they have a self serve station that has syrups that you can use without an up charge. read more

This service here was extremely odd to say the least. Upon walking in there were only 2 other customers who were sitting outside & two workers present behind the counter. Blonde guy maybe upper 20's...early 30's has extremely odd mannerisms for customer service. He greeted me with a big smile on my face upon walking in and naturally as I had never been there before I said, "Hello, thank you, I'm going to look for just a moment." At that moment he scowled and said "ok". I ordered about a minute later and was asked if I wanted my bagel toasted, which I did..I paid and again as he left the cash register he was scowling again... Once my order was up he handed me my bagel smiling, I said thank you and he turned and walked away with the same scowl. Needless to say, maybe he was having a bad morning or maybe he didn't realize I could still see his face as he turned away but either way it gave me a weird vibe and was incredibly odd & a bit Jekyll & Hide. To top it off, my standards of "toasted" must be different than this places, it was warmed up but not toasted in any way. read more

Great place to stop in for a quick bite to-go or to sit down for a meeting. I've been in a few times in the last couple of years - great breakfast sandwiches and priced well for what you're getting. Love that they have a gluten free bagel available. They even asked while I was ordering if it needed to be toasted in a gluten free toaster. I appreciate that level of care. I got the Santa Fe breakfast sandwich and it was fantastic. Loaded with fresh sliced avocado and thick cut bacon. Paid just over $10 - which felt like a good value for what I received. My critiques would be that I wish there were a bigger variety for the GF bagels. I would have loved an Asiago bagel! Also, the sandwich needed more cream cheese. It may have made the GF bagel feel less dense, dry, and crumbly if it had been spread on the top piece as well. I ended up taking off the top of the bagel to eat the sandwich and that was fine. Has a shit ton to choose from. There's both savory and sweet bagels, as well as lots of spreads and toppings for the bagel sandwiches. A good place in the morning, or whenever it happens to be open for bagels. It also has pretty okay coffee. The bagels are why people come though. It's about $2 for a bagel. I came here on a Friday around 10am and there were some people but it wasn't packed. The interior is unique with famous figures painted largely on the walls, an enclosed glass office in the back, and a little bagel station that has various condiments and water. I got the loaded Hot Cheeto bagel. It was SCRUMPTIOUS!! It came with jalapeño cream cheese that was to die for. It wasn't as spicy as I thought it would be and it was overall delicious. The staff here was friendly and I got my bagel quick. On my way to Independence Grove I decided to stop in for a quite bite to eat! When entering the staff was super friendly and were quick to help get my order and prepared. I ordered food for 4 people and was able to get my food in about 5 minutes or so. We decided to try the hot Cheetos bagel after hearing such great things about it. It was a very different taste of a bagel but still exceptional! I highly recommend the BLT bagel for lunch on a cheddar bagel with avocado! They use actual strips of bacon cooked fresh so it was extra crispy was incredible! They have so many different options of bagels & cream cheese options that we also bought a half dozen to take home and enjoy for breakfast the following morning! The team at Bagels by The Book are so nice and welcoming! It was my first time visiting for a Yelp Elite event and I was impressed. The manager Danny directed me where to go and asked if I had any questions. I liked that multiple regulars came in, were greeted by name and asked if they wanted their "usual." This shows BBTB has a loyal customer base! I took a few moments to explore the space--it's warm with a lovely design mix of art. I LOVED my bagel. The funniest part is that I've lived 10 minutes away from here for most of my life and haven't been until now. What a cute neighborhood bagel shop, complete with comfy seating, fun art on the wall, and a wide selection. I even studied here for a bit and hope to return soon. I came in on a Friday morning to do some coworking. It's a nice open spot with plenty of seating so I opted for one of the 4 person tables in the back so my coworker and I can spread out with our laptops. We ended up ordering the Old Standby (I had mine with sausage and she had hers with bacon and avocado). This was was my first time here so I was a little indecisive with all the bagel options but I ended up going with the asiago bagel for my sandwich. They had so many flavors, I was curious to try a bunch of them especially the hot cheetos bagel, so maybe next time. I also got the raspberry lemonade and that was really good. The sandwich was very filling. The bagel wasn't dry and it was nice and chewy. I'm not a big sandwich person but this was delightful.
