More of a classic diner than a hot dog stand, but we were a little disappointed by the somewhat below average version of diner offerings. We did not get the Michigan dogs, alas, and if we pass through again I promise to rectify that and re-review when we do. The service was friendly and we got our fill. The "poutines" was standard french fries, some jarred gravy, and some pretty tasteless curds, but you know, even bad poutines is a guilty pleasure and it's always nice to find it on this side of the border. I am very, very tempted, though, to downgrade this to a flat two stars, because there was a whole forest of gum under the table at the booth where we were, which is gross enough in and of itself (nice classy customers ya got) but the fact they hadn't checked underneath to clean the gum off was gross and a bad sign about general standards of cleanliness. One strangeness: it is really, really hard to get in and out of the parking lot. They've put up concrete barriers to prevent entering straight into the intersection, which is good, but we literally had to drive up the street and turn around in another parking lot and come back to the turn lane to get in, and then reversed the process to get out, so we could turn right away from the intersection. read more

Was four stars in 2018 when was first passing through the area. It is four stars as well in 2021. Place has updated outside. New deck seating area built outside is very nice. Today I had their grilled chicken BLT. It comes with fries, Cole slaw and pickle. The sandwich was very good but hard to eat as one whole breast placed on bread. Might fit better if it was sliced in half first. Fries were very good, crispy on the outside and soft inside. Will patronize them again next time I am in town. read more

We were Greeted upon entering by friendly staff. We were seated and our waitress quickly got our drinks gave us time to read the menu. We asked about the specials and she told us. We ordered the famous red Hots, tater tot Michigan loaded (the chef came out and explained them to us!) and a Cesar salad. Everything was delicious came home with over 1/2 tots special.( however someone near us ordered poutine going to order that next time). Michigan sauce has an after kick.... Sad we Didn't save room for their delicious looking desserts though. Cook and waitress came over to see how everything was. They all said goodbye when we left. Very friendly place to eat! Breakfast menu looks good. Lunch and dinner, they offer hamburgers, sandwiches, daily specials, pizza, wings, Michigans (have them with onions and mustard) Diner was very clean, bathroom too. This was the most amazing meal I've had in a long time! So welcoming and kind the moment we walked in the door, my 3yr old had a blast playing the claw machines and loved her pizza while hubby and I had some breakfast for dinner and it was sooo good! I had a couple of hours to kill while moving my daughter into SUNY Plattsburgh. 3 short exits north on 87 I found Gus's Red Hots. One of the specialties is the Michigan hot dog. Being a NYC native I know Nathan's and Sabretts aka dirty water dogs from the carts. Never heard of Michigan dog so why not try one out. It's a hot dog on a top split bun with meat sauce mustard and raw onions. This masterpiece is accompanied with nice fries and tasty coleslaw and served by Alex who was a really great person. We went to Gus' one evening in Nov 2025. We had an absolutely horrible experience and will never go again. When we arrived there were no other customers in the restaurant but there were 6 tables covered with used dishes, food, drinks etc. I don't understand why 2 waitresses didn't pick up the dirty tables since they weren't doing anything else. The food was also terrible. The stromboli arrived completely black and burned. He asked to have a new one made and the second one wasn't cooked. He could put his fork in the bottom of the stromboli and stretch the dough , so not even close to being cooked. The original waitress didn't even deliver the second stromboli, she had the other waitress do it for her. Most of us had food that was luke warm at best. One person ordered turkey melt and got cold turkey, bacon, cheese on a cold sub roll. It wasn't melted and there was no mayonnaise or anything on it. It was very cold in the restaurant and I could see a space heater on a chair aimed at empty booths so I asked the waitress if she could turn it our direction. Her response was " there is one on the floor pointed your direction." It was so cold, that we had to eat with our coats on. We put the menus at the end of the table for the waitress to pick up. When it was obvious that she wasn't coming back to our table, we put them on one of the tables covered in dirty dishes and food. After delivering the food the waitress never came back again to ask how everything was. If she had come back, we could have asked to have our food warmed and gotten mayonnaise for the dry, cold sub, aka turkey melt. We also could have asked for drink refills. The waitress just stood at the other side of the restaurant. Three other people arrived so we asked the other waitress for help as she went past our table. Her response was " You're not my table." We informed her that our waitress hadn't been back since she delivered the food so could she send her to our table. When she came, she basically said that she warned us after the burned stromboli, that the next one wouldn't be cooked. When we brought it to her attention that she hadn't been back to check on our table, she argued that she had been back. We were her only table. My daughter went up to pay her bill and didn't say anything, but the waitress started bad mouthing another person in our party. This was supposed to be a special occasion, but it was totally ruined by the food and the actions and attitude of the waitress. I found out after the fact, that 3 days prior to this, Gus's received two critical violations from the health department. Save yourself the time, effort and money. DON'T GO TO GUS' RED HOTS. Beautiful place from the outside, so it caught our eye. When my friend and I entered, it wasn't as appealing but had a diner homey quality about it. We sat in a booth and a very friendly woman came to take our order. We're from Long Island, so we never had red hots before and were anticipating it. 2 Michigan dogs WITH onions, fries and cole slaw. Not 5 minutes later, they came to the table and they looked puny to me. Tasted good, pretty much loose meat on a hot dog with raw onions and mustard, not great but they weren't hot in temperature and seemed like a chicken Frankfurter. Polished it off and then we ordered pie! My friend had Reese's peanut butter and I got banana cream. Save your money, they're straight out of a box and not homemade. read more

I love finding local diners that advertise they have the "Famous" (you name it). How can you pass that up? Gus' Famous Red Hots restaurant was a treat. Being a past Michigander I had to try the red hots with Michigan sauce. The hot dog was topped with Michigan sauce (which is a meet sauce type chili) and onion and mustard. ABOSULTLY delicious! Not gonna lie... I'm still not entiiiiirely sure what a red hot is... even though I had one. The red hot (basically a regular hot dog) wasn't bad. It's... a hot dog people. It's not going to change your life, but it'll do the job. The fries, however, were crunchy and delicious. Really hit the spot. I also tried a ruben sandwich which I did enjoy, but thought could use a little less saurkraut (not sure if that's the spelling, or if that's what was inside tbh) but there was an overpowering flavor I thought would have actually been fine in a smaller amount. Staff is suuuuuper friendly and helpful and the place is spacious and has plenty of parking, which I appreciate. At the end of the day it's a diner, so be prepped with your expectations! Later I took my own kids there after being at the water slide just down on Route 9. We were living in Montreal at the time. I have great memories of eating there on numerous occasions. It was fun. Met friends here for lunch and, since the day was comfortable, sat outside. Gus's is an old standby with their famous Michigan aka Texas Red Hot. The michigans and fries are always reliably good. Our group tried a variety of items, from eggs benedict, to a tuna melt, to a hot turkey sandwich. No one was disappointed. They have their own raspberry tea, which is great. The only issue is sitting outside, the service is likely not the same as inside. We had to retrieve our own condiments, only one person got a second beverage, and we never got additional napkins. So our tip is to eat inside for better service. read more

The meat was dry and without any flavor, the "steamed" bun was also dry and fell apart while we were eating them. So expensive and so discouraging. Aside from nervous eye contact from waitresses, zero communication. I mean zero. I showered today, dressed business casual, was quiet. Shredded cheddar cheese, one puny, half piece of a tomato and a chunk of a quarter of lettuce which is supposed to be thrown out and a tiny dollop of mayonnaise. The macaroni salad was packaged on 24 October. Today is the 29th. That went directly into the trash. I had high hopes when this restaurant was purchased because it would be continuing one of our landmarks, but the original restaurant was a classic diner. They actually prepared real food. It wasn't all frozen and processed. please go a little further down the street to make Sweeneys take a left at the light go to McDonald's just stay away from here. Fries were very greasy/heavy and coleslaw was bland, too. The food is edible, but not tasty at all. Not really impressed and definitely can make better at home. Service was fine except waiter pulled a disappearing act at the end of our meal. So we had to flag down another waitress to find our bill and ring us out. If I could give zero stars, I would. We had decided to go to Gus' for dinner tonight and see how much it had changed under the new ownership and support local business. I must say, I'm not impressed. When we walked in, we were told we could seat ourselves and somebody would be with us in just a minute. This was the only acknowledgment that we even existed. We sat for over ten minutes waiting for a waitress. During this time we watched the waitstaff at the counter messing around and chitchatting. I'd also like to mention the fact that it was about sixty degrees outside and they had the air conditioner turned basically as low as it could go. During this ten minutes we froze. Eventually we decided that they obviously didn't want our business and left. I'm quite disappointed and probably won't be returning. Edit: I also posted a comment on their Facebook page. Today when I checked to see if anybody had gotten back to me, I discovered they removed the post. Glad to see that they have no customer service skills. I certainly won't be returning and I recommend you don't even waste your time. There are multiple other home-style restaurants in the Plattsburgh/ West Chazy area that have amazing food and actually care about their customers satisfaction. I wasn't planning to stop here, but a Gus of wind came out of nowhere (probably off Lake Champlain) and forced my car into the parking lot. And the rest is history. It's on a major intersection where you turn off to get the ferry to Vermont. It's on the North East side. It has pretty good hot dogs. A little pricy but definitely delicious. It's been awhile since I was up in these parts so I can't give it a 5 star without trying it again, but I definitely remember them being very good. Gus' is a Plattsburgh institution. It's been around for at least 60 years. This is considered forever in terms of Plattsburgh, where the crappy economy causes businesses to open and close quickly. Whenever I come back to the area to visit family and friends, I can count on any number of restaurants and retail shops to have packed up and skipped town in my absence. So it's nice, then, to see that Gus' is always there. As the title suggests, Gus' claim to fame is its "red hots", which are the hot dogs encased in the red "natural" casings. Those are a staple up in northern NY, since the packing/distribution place is located in the hellhole known as Malone, NY. The hot dogs are then covered with a chili-like substance, and the whole shebang is known as a "michigan". Tasty, artery-clogging, grease-tastic michigans. Gus' also holds its own when it comes to burgers and other standard diner fare. They also have several different decent selections of deep-fried seafood, but it's nothing to really write home about, given that it's upstate NY and isn't the fresh seafood we Bostonians are accustomed to. It's a proper diner setting, with a larger dining room in back. There are red vinyl booths and the classic metal stools with the same red vinyl cushions at the counter. And just like most other diners, the prices are extremely reasonable. I think my cheeseburger, fries, and soda (with refills) came to around $7 total (tax included). I usually make it a point to come to Gus' at least once during my trips home. It's dependable, tasty, and cheap. Triple threat! read more
