It's been 27 years since I last had Gus' Hot Dogs; back from 1995 to 1999, I ate there five days a week. I switched jobs and never made it back until today. Back in the day, Gus' had the best hot dogs this side of The Varsity in Atlanta. I finally made it back today and got the two-hot-dog meal--mustard only--with fries and a drink. Even though it's a new owner, nothing has changed; they're still just as great. I completely forgot how amazing the fries were; nobody beats Gus' on fries. You order at the counter and they call you when it's ready, which took about four minutes. I'm guessing the guy taking orders is the owner; he's super friendly. I got there around 11 a.m. and there was a steady stream of customers the whole 30 minutes I was there. They seemed to know everyone's name, which is a sign of good food--plenty of regulars! Overall, it tastes just like I remember. If I had to pick three things for my last meal, Gus' Hot Dogs would definitely be on the list. read more

Just east of Birmingham proper right off Interstate 20 in an aging shopping center sits a nice purveyor of that great local tradition, the Birmingham hot dog. Despite its name, it is NOT related to any of the other "Gus's" in the area, whatever the ownership configuration may have once been. The Irondale Gus's is, of course, packed at lunchtime but not overcrowded, and it is not heat-lamp fast food. It takes several minutes at the least to get your order, and more if you want, say, a hamburger cooked to order. The Birmingham dog is decked out with mustard, sauerkraut, onions, and a special tomato-based sauce similar to the region's barbecue sauces, albeit with a different spice pantheon (it is Greek in origin). It can be ordered as is, or with a special chili-like topping made of beef and onion gravy on top. I chose to stay with the basic formula and ordered a combo of two, fries, and drink. Several years ago I reviewed a Hoover/Pelham joint called Tony's, and the dogs at Gus's are pretty similar-tasting, with the sauce playing a sweetish counterpart to the sourness of the kraut. It is a little heavier on the onion than I ordinarily like, but I figure it is this restaurant's unique interpretation of the Birmingham dog. The frankfurter itself probably comes from Ziegler's Meats in nearby Tuscaloosa and is Southern-style skinless, making for an easy bite. One thing interesting about Gus's is that one gets a discount if cash is used instead of cards. I availed myself of that feature. This is a convenient place just two stoplights south of the Interstate, and costs no more than a national chain fast-food meal--with much better taste. So on the way to Atlanta from points west or north, this would be a great lunch option. Potato chips are available instead of fries on the combo meals, and the iced tea comes from Red Diamond, a local brand. read more

After a long day of studying, I chose to go to Gus Hotdogs located in Irondale, Alabama, before going in I noticed it was crowded so I automatically assumed that they were going to be good. As I began to put my order in, I could sense that front counter worker was not too excited about working. To be fair she was polite, just lacked energy. I ordered a Chili Cheese-dog and a polish sausage. I really enjoyed my meal, the food quality was on point and full of flavor. While eating my meal I made sure I was observant. A few things that stood out to me was that they had a deep freezer In the dining area with duct tape on it, I assume they had no other place to put it. As for as cleanliness goes I'd give them a 6/10, the counter was dirty near the drink station, also there was debris on the seats. Over all I would say they did an okay job during cleaning, I would suggest paying attention to detail when cleaning. However I would also like to have seen calorie information on all meal options. My overall rating I would give them a 7/10 cause I really enjoyed the quality of food. read more

Gus's Hot Dogs is a long established restaurant with several locations in the Birmingham, Alabama area. The restaurant, as the name would imply, specialize in hot dogs, but they also have burgers, sandwiches, french fries, onion rings and the usual assortment of menu items that you would associate with this kind of restaurant. I had never been to their Irondale, Alabama location before, but business took me to the area and it was around lunchtime, so long story short, I had a hot dog for lunch. I went with their super chili dog, which is a quarter pound hot dog, onions and mustard. Unlike a lot of hot dog places in the south that rely on cheap hot dogs made with poultry as a key ingredient (the term mechanically separated chicken is by no means an appealing term), Gus's Hot Dogs use a quality hot dog and you can really tell by the taste. They also were pretty liberal with the chili, so just the hot dog was a pretty satisfying lunch (I am currently trying to drop a few pounds, so no french fries or onion rings on this meal). The service was extremely friendly and while the interior was nothing special or fancy, it was clean and relatively comfortable. All in all, if you are in the Birmingham, Alabama area, I would recommend a visit to Gus's Hot Dogs. I don't think you will be disappointed. read more

I have been coming to Gus' for the last several years, the staff are very friendly, the prepared, they call everybody Baby. The food always comes out hot and fresh. There's a yuge variety of choices from hotdogs, burgers, chicken sandwiches corn dogs and more. On special days they even do a grill cheese and chili combo. Be ready for fast paced service plenty of people. It's not s large dining room but people fast and move on. I do recommend. read more

The seating are inside is small with a handful of booths and 4 or so tables. But they have either added some outdoor seating or their customers are using the outdoor seating for the bar next door. This is my second time trying Gus's ! The first time I ordered a to go order but this time I decided to seat in and eat lunch. I ordered a chilli dog and it was delicious reminded me of the busy nights of having after school activities and my mom cooking up something quick for me and my siblings to eat. The restaurant is quite nice and small with a couple of booths, cleaned and everyone is very nice and Southern hospitality to a tee. After moving away from my hometown which is home to the best chili dog spot I have ever eaten, I haven't really had too many chili dogs. I tried to like the "Birmingham style" dog... but it isn't really my jam. And although Gus's does serve that type of dog, they also serve the kind I like. I like the chili to not really be saucey at all. I like it to be a real fine ground meat with a lot of flavor and just enough moisture to stick well to the dog. A mix of that, a steamed bun, and sprinkled with raw onion takes me back to the 1000s of hot dogs I had growing up. And although Gus's weren't quite as good as the other place I'm talking about, they are pretty dadgum close. I don't really eat bread a lot anymore. But when I do have a cheat day, some Gus's will certainly be considered! read more

This is a great strip mall local place in Irondale. Co-workers, friends and myself have been coming for years. The food and service has stayed the same. From the regularly hot dog to the super special dog it's all great. O and the hamburger is great too! For me the slaw dogs with french fries is the way to go! Some of my friends prefer the ones with chili and kraut as well. Either way, never have had a bad experience and all are made as you order. Please be aware that this place charges 3.8% surcharge on credit/debit card transactions. The cashier tells you the total, and when you sign the receipt, it's for a different amount that includes the surcharge. The food is decent , but the surcharge leaves a bitter aftertaste. I would recommend skipping this restaurant and finding a place that appreciates the customers. My office won't be dining here again. read more

Disclaimer: I have a habit of going to hot dog joints but not actually getting a hot dog. Case in point. Went to Gus' for lunch & got a turkey burger. And you know what, I would do it again! It was delicious! As I was ordering it, even the cook said it sounded good & he also said a lot of people ordered the turkey burger there & really like it. Anyhoo, I got mine with bacon (duh), cheese (double duh), mayo, mustard, onions & pickles. It was awesome. The fries left something to be desired sadly. I would not come back here again. The hot dogs are mediocre and there is nothing special about their ingredients or how they are cooked. The french fries are awful. They are the thin frozen kind and weren't hot when served, but were barely warm. The hot dogs and fries are pre cooked and sit in warming stations waiting to be picked up for your order. The employees seemed nice enough so that is why this review didn't get one star. There doesn't seem to be any effort put into making the food stand out from any other restaurant. It was fine. I hate to say this though, I think I prefer Dairy Queen chilli cheese dogs over theirs. The chili was akin to the consistency of dog food and American cheese is used. Everyone knows cheddar cheese goes on a chili cheese dog! I also just prefer a tomato- based chili, and this was just more like.. mushy ground beef.
