Meh! We so wanted to love Gustaf's coming for Mother's Day. My rating is neutral as I didn't hate it or love it. Perhaps we have to blame it on the holiday, however, the service and credit card fees are a reflection of this rating. My mom reserved a table for 3 and we felt rushed to order and weren't told about the special Mother's Day menu that would end at 1 pm and not begin on the secondary menu at 2 pm with a noon reservation. We got our order placed in time and I had no issues with the meal as the portion size of the egg bake was was perfection. Our server disappeared once our food was distributed which was a bummer as my mom wanted more coffee. When we went to pay, we were all surprised with the debit/ credit fee of (I believe almost 3%). I have to argue that in today's market as a business, you have got to find ways to omit this fee or very clearly advertise cash only. Lastly, mothers were to get a flower at the table and my mom did not. I understand it said "while supplies last", however, with reservations, this should have been easy to count and distribute accordingly. The ambiance of this old historic building are my style as I appreciate any place that has been preserved. The city of Lindstrom is also such a special place. Proceed here with caution as there are good and bad. read more

Newer Swedish eatery in Lindstom takes an old 1800 building and added a homestyle cafe and ice cream shop on the main drag. Breakfasts are solid - good Swedish pancakes and all the typical fixings, homemade soup and sandwiches are also good. Service was a bit slow and there are a lot of rooms in this place, and some of the rooms are drafty so bring a cover as its an old building. Note: all they have is bottled water and drinks to order... we liked this place and if it was closet to home we would come more often. read more

It was okay, but I was left disappointed. I went specifically to Lindstrom for Swedish food, and I ended up with 2 measly "Swedish" pancakes and bacon and bottle of water. I was there in the beginning of December for an early Saturday lunch during the Swedish festival. I didn't see any real festival going on though. The restaurant had already run out of their squash soup, and I was really looking forward to it. They also charge for small bottles of water. No tap water, just like Europe. That seemed odd for a small town. The ambience was nice, but our table was situated right beside the restaurant's single restroom where a line was formed. The restaurant was made from an old house, so of course there is only one restroom. If I make it back to Lindstrom, I'll skip this place. read more

I'm sharing this for a friend,without Yelp, that visited today. I wanted to love this place. Very homey on the inside and a lovely little front porch where we sat. Egg bake was tasty and Swedish pancakes were average. It was the service that gives it 1 star. It was busy but waiting more than 1/2 hour for an egg bake that was precooked and Swedish pancakes that take 2 minutes??? I asked for gf toast but it came with regular. Waiter said he'd get some but no apology and he didn't bring it out until I was done eating. Hubby asked to have it taken off the bill and they declined. Unfortunate experience. We called in our order for delivery while we were at the Moose Lake Brewery. They only took half the time they quoted us, which was fabulous. My grandson chose a 7 inch bacon pizza, my boyfriend chose the 12 inch special, our companion chose a calzone, and I got a gluten free crust no cheese Hawaiian pizza. Everyone ate all of their food except for me. I also ordered a Small chef salad. That was nice and fresh and really full of flavor. No crummy "pink" tomatoes here. They tasted like they just came from the garden. YUM! My pizza however, lacked flavor. The crust had no flavor. The sauce had no flavor. I was a little disappointed. I only ate 3 pieces of the pizza and the rest went in the trash. I should have just ordered the large chef salad. If you like salads I highly suggest it! The calzone was beautifully baked and well seasoned according to our friend and my boyfriend really enjoyed his pizza. They all looked really good to me. My grandson liked his as well and only left just a couple edges of crust. If you're hungry for pizza (and don't need gluten free or dairy free) I would highly suggest this place. Stopped by here for lunch while visiting this Swedish area. Had the butternut squash soup and grilled cheese. Our guests had the same soup and BLTs. We stopped ad it was cute place and had great reviews. Well, in my opinion there are many false witnesses. They serve only bottled drinks including water so they can charge outrageous prices. 6oz bottled coke $3 and of course water $1. The server insisted that they only had bottled water because they dont have a sink......hmm....probably should call the health department as then there would be no way to wash your dishes. I had the Gustaf and my friend had the Swedish meatball sub and we shared.....both okay, but nothing special. When rhe tone is set for a a cute, quaint, and friendly restaurant and come out with the only intention of squeezing money out of your customers rather than providing good food, good service and a fair price, you can't expect a return visit. We were craving a light lunch and found the perfect spot. Sandwiches, soup and ice cream - gustafs! I ordered the lunch special (soup and/or salad with Sammy) the BLT and chicken wild rice soup were delicious. Thick creamy soup how I like it and served nice and hot. I decided to come visit this restaurant because I was looking for a cute Swedish cafe to order from in Minnesota. Unfortunately we arrived right as they were closing so we didn't have many options to choose from and I wasn't able to try their Swedish pancakes. However their sandwiches were nice and their ice cream was delicious. The staff wore masks and they have a really nice porch area with a decent amount of outdoor seating. My one suggestion would be to offer more Swedish food items besides the Swedish pancakes and meatballs. I think many visitors would really enjoy a Swedish Cafe to have fika (Swedish afternoon snack). read more

We stopped by Gustaf's to eat on our way home from a day of outdoor adventures. The food was delightful (good sandwiches on cranberry bread!) and the interior surprisingly spacious with tables (the pics online don't do it justice). Nice wait staff, I just wish they stayed open later. Definitely a great spot to grab a bite to eat, charmingly placed between flower and art shops that can expand your experience. read more

I was charged an extra 3.5% fee (obviously for people using cards) but I paid in cash. My total was $15.50, for a $14 sandwich. The plain potato chips that came with the sandwich were stale. The sandwich portion was terrible, 2 pieces of processed turkey, processed cheese, a spoiled tomato slice, and I peice of bacon for the entire sandwich. I will never eat there again read more

We shared "The Lindstrom" egg bake and Swedish pancakes and they were delicious and just enough food for the 2 of us. Love the quaint atmosphere inside and the outdoor seating as well. The food is way overpriced for what it is; the whole idea of farm to table is completely unreliable in this restaurant. Fully expect your chicken sandwich to be a reheated, crumbly chicken breast at room temperature. When I received my Brick House, it felt as though it was inedible. The avocado was from a packaged container, not mashed from a local farm. As well as the amount of aggression shown from the manager to her young staff - I could hear her from the other room away from the kitchen, almost felt embarrassed - this gave a sort of rotten taste in my mouth, and the image of a quiet, quaint, and beautiful historic building, was most definitely ruined. For example, she yelled at her staff for bringing too many napkins to someones table. Would not come back again, but rather, spend my money at McDonalds, because the teenagers there definitely feel a lot more safer. The foods almost always fresh there anyway. read more

A delightful and attractive historic house in the lovely downtown Lindstrom make this an enjoyable stop on the drive through or a hangout gathering spot for locals. The service is friendly and efficient. There are many delightful seating options in for cozy private dining in by a window or seated at a round table with a group of friends. Food is very good, I know that several food ingredients are sourced from a local organic food buying club. This is converted from an old residence, so it can get loud when crowded (and it does get crowded sometimes, but service s still pretty good, but visually very nice. I was asked to meet my (lawyer) daughter here for lunch and boy, was this place hopping! Even though it was pretty full, the food came out in a reasonable time and it was delicious! I had the soup and sandwich and the soup alone filled me up! Our waitress was very attentive even though we sat outside on the front porch and watched the neighbors drive by. Cutest eatery! Stopped in for breakfast and had the avocado toast on multigrain toast. Not super exciting I know but, as a vegetarian, the menu is limited to more meat options with a focus on Swedish dishes. The Swedish pancakes with lingonberries would have been an option for me but, I was not ready for sweet today. Excellent locally roasted coffee and all was very good. Delightful lunch spot right on the Main Street. It was easy to park right in front. We were seated quickly in a bright sunny room. Even though they were busy there is enough room between tables for private conversation. Our party ordered two sandwiches and a salad and it was all delicious. The cranberry wild rice bread is amazing. Our server was helpful and on the spot with coffee refills. We finished up with some delicious Wisconsin made ice cream. I came across this gem while looking for a central location for a mini family reunion. The owner was very helpful in making arrangements to accommodate all of us. It is the cutest little restaurant with some rich history. We had our own little private room and given plenty of time to visit. The food and the service were great! If you're into farm to table, probably a great choice in an area with limited restaurant choices. Light and airy space with wonderful windows, clean and bright. Don't expect a wide selection, but good interesting choices include breakfasts and sandwiches along with a couple of soup choices. Can't get a tap water which seems funny in a farm to table place (bottled water from Nestle's "ice mountain" is required). Staff are friendly and nice, but slow. Also I ordered a ham and cheese " the western" but it had no ham or cheese. Thursday nights are Swedish meatball dinner nights-sounds like these may be really good and authentic. Special tea parties also sound like fun (maybe for Mother's Day?) We may need to come back and see how those are. read more

Finding unique restaurants outside a metro area isn't always easy: suburbs and small towns are generally full of chains or places that might as well be chains, considering their lack of fresh ingredients and scratch cooking. Gustaf's was a welcome change from those problems. The historic Victorian brick home makes for a charming setting for a relaxing meal. Customers place orders at the counter in the front room and have several rooms with a few small tables in which to dine. The breakfast/brunch/lunch menu isn't overly expansive, with about half a dozen apiece of breakfast options, entrees, and salads, plus a few soups and desserts, but it's well curated and its limited scope means you're not dealing with frozen, processed, or aging ingredients. Everything we tried was fresh and tasty. The standouts were the amazing tomato bisque, the apple pie, and two truly delicious cups of apparently locally roasted coffee. Helena's Salad (spinach, feta, blueberries, nuts, and a raspberry dressing) and the Gold Rush (a great chicken salad on a croissant with a pickle and potato chips) were both good and, if anything, perhaps overly generous in their portions. The avocado toast was good, if typical. When it comes to the quality of the food or the service, there were no lowlights: the staff was very helpful and friendly, and even the dishes that we didn't consider highlights were perfectly good. Having water available only available for purchase by the bottle rather than complimentary was a mildly disappointing surprise, but not nearly enough of a drawback to count as a complaint. Not being local, we regret not being able to easily stop in to test out a few more items. But if we're in the area again, Gustaf's will be on the agenda for breakfast, lunch, or even an afternoon snack of ice cream and coffee. read more

I recently visited Gustaf's on main eatery for the first time and I had a wonderful time eating at this locally owned eatery. The food was fresh and the service was exceptional. I would even say top notch. Finding a good local restaurant when your traveling is tough and this place is clearly a winner. The wait staff are so friendly and really make an effort to serve the customer. I felt very appreciated on my long journey. I really enjoyed the food and atmosphere and would recommend eating here with your family. It's a beautiful historic building near downtown Lindstrom and is right on highway 8. If you're traveling through Lindstrom it's the perfect place to stop for a quick and easy bite to eat. I look forward to returning in the future. read more
