Ten Thousand Swedes Ran Through the Weeds…read more.. ...chased by one Norwegian! Tourists visiting Minnesoodah can expect to encounter a large population of tall, blond, strange-speaking people of Norwegian ancestry. To attempt communication with these locals, a visit to the Uffda Shop in Red Wing for translation guides such as "How to Speak Minnesotan" and "The Best of Ole and Lena" is always a smart plan. With educational guides in hand, tourists can next get a taste for local cuisine by checking out the Scandinavian food section of the store (mostly sweets). If you are visiting over the Christmas season, you may be lucky enough to enjoy a free sample of a Scandinavian dessert recipes, made in-store, with a free recipe card to boot. Other gift items include Polar Mitts hats, mittens, and scarves, crystal and glass, Christmas collectibles, towels and linens, and dinnerware. If you are a local, you are likely headed to the store for Christmas items such as troll statues, woolen Dale of Norway sweaters, or high-quality, krumkake and Bethany Housewares lefse equipment. Both tourists and locals alike will enjoy learning interesting facts about store items and Scandinavian culture from the friendly and knowledgeable store associates. They are also always happy to gift-wrap your purchase in the Scandinavian wrapping paper of your choice! Be forewarned that you may find yourself using the word "uffda" when shopping here as prices can be a bit "spendy".

Things are a bit pricey and there's no real flow to where to check out, but it was still nice to stop in and grab some stuff on small business Saturday.

As loving parents, we want to help them furnish their home with furniture they will cherish. Repurpose Republic has the best stuff and the best prices in the city. I know, because we spent all day checking out consignment stores in every nick and corner of the Twin Cities. (They're certainly not identical twins!) The proprietor Doug is engaging and informative. He has an eye for a pieces that are architectural beauties. Yet, he can also turn that basement throw away into something that should be displayed in the Museum of Modern Art. Repurpose Republic is the kind of place you want to return to often, just to see what new beauty shows up on the showroom floor. Unfortunately, Repurpose Republic was our first stop, and I was exhausted with all the wasted hours visiting other consignment stores. Save yourself some time and just "hit up" Repurpose Republic. It's the best.

I'm new to NE and happened to spot a post about this store on the I Love NE Mpls Facebook group and…read morehave been wanting to hunt it down. While driving past after hanging out with my mom, I slammed in my brakes and whipped a U-ee. Lucky me with my good parking juju, I was able to pull in right out front. I love a good repurpose store and now living in NE I'm in need of some lighting that fits the whole cool Nordeast vibe. This store is chock full of mid century/retro/some redesigned stuff all without that old people basement smell. (Thank God!) This place has more mid century lamps in one store than I've ever seen in my life!! There are a few super groovy ones that would be a blast to have just for conversation it would conjure up all on its own. The con: maybe it's my jacked up NE Mpls rent I'm now paying or my lack of experience on the cost of retro lighting but I'm not sure I can afford these prices. Boo...because I had a good 5 different lamps/lamp sets that my heart was pitter-patterning over. I was able to chitchat with the owner for a bit before there was a sudden Saturday afternoon rush that poured in. I had asked "if it was consignment? Just him buying/reselling? Buy from others that bring things in off the street?" He responded with "All three" and let me know that he also has some local artist work displayed for sale as well. (Ya, this girl is totally into the whole "support local" thing!) I'll definitely be back to see what cools finds get added...and probably be back for a few lamps...after payday.
