Stopped in again to try their outdoor eating & play area. Got a nice flavored hard cider served up quickly & courteously, but they had plenty of other options & multiple IPA options. Service was ok, but not stellar. Seemed like I caught them when still setting up shop. Unfortunately the ground was also soaked from the day before, but there were plenty of dry spots. The kids seemed to be enjoying the sand pit. But plenty of spaces in or out of the sun. Am looking forward to going back again soon.

When a cozy café forgets that ambiance includes keeping the cold out -- great pastries, but this door needs a bouncer.

UPDATE: Bravo, Gustave They Listened, They Fixed It -- First Class All the Way Credit where credit is absolutely due. Since my original review, the owners of Gustave Boulangerie have gone above and beyond and replaced the entire front door structure with a proper, commercial-grade door custom fit to the frame -- and it has completely transformed the guest experience. Many operators would have brushed off a review like this, chalked it up to "one opinion," and moved on. Gustave did the opposite. They listened, took it seriously, and invested in a real solution that benefits everyone who walks through the door. That speaks volumes about the ownership and how they run their business. The result? The same vibrant Parisian café energy, the same exceptional coffee and pastries -- now without the unintended wind tunnel. Warm, cozy, inviting, and exactly what you want when sipping a cappuccino or digging into something hot and indulgent. First class all the way around. Issues happen; how you respond to them defines you. Gustave lived up to its reputation and then some. À votre santé -- or perhaps more appropriately, à la French toast. Cheers.

Everything at Gustave Boulangerie was amazing! We tried a little bit of everything, but my absolute favorite was the vanilla eclair. I'll definitely be back!

Love this place so much. The pastries are delicious. I especially love the chocolate croissants though I've been happy with everything I've tried. But for me it's the ambiance that makes it stand out. They had a huge sandbox outside and a big outdoor space in general, all gated in so it's perfect to let your toddler run around while you eat.

Love this close-to-authentic French bakery! Located in the heart of Alexandria, this bakery holds one of the best pain au chocolat, coming from someone who has traveled globally! Its soft, fluffy, and filled w chocolate. Plus, their baguettes has won a former title of best baguette too! Need to come back for other pastries! Def recommend them!

Small but cozy French cafe with a solid selection of drinks, baked goods, pre-made baguette sandwiches, + a small selection of hot foods as well Limited seating inside, but also have a few outdoor tables + a large space with picnic tables that becomes a beer garden at night I tried a vanilla latte and a breakfast pastry and both were very fresh and tasty People were very friendly and everything was prepared very quickly As mentioned previously, the space is fairly small and it was starting to get a little cramped by the time that I left

Lovely and clean place, not usually crowded. Nice staff, really kind and helpful. Food is pretty good, I had a Ham Croissant Breakfast Sandwich.

Stopped in for lunch today and it was an ok place. Food was what you would expect nothing spectacular about it. Desserts looked delicious but lacked flavor. Service was a little hectic, there wasn't a clear sense of how you got your food when it was done. It was a cross between getting a number for your table, waiting as each item was done, and having to figure out where your order was. The restaurant itself was cozy on the inside with plenty of room outside to sit. I may go back in the spring to see what the outside seating area is all about if I happen to be in the area.

Honestly I had no idea what to expect. I ordered the salmon avocado croissant and was blown away! So tasty and a welcoming airy environment.

This is my favorite spot in all of Del Ray and perhaps even in all of Alexandria. Everything I've tried is nothing short of perfect. There is so much love and care put into every single pastry and every single cup of beverage. I keep raving about it to my friends and sending them over! I am hooked on their ham and cheese croissant as well as the spinach and cheese feuilleté. I also love the Nutella beignet, cappuccino, and hot chocolate (legit European-style hot chocolate). I stop by every weekend and I always want to try something new, but end up getting my usuals because I need my fix. One of these days, I will get to the crêpes and other pastries! The owners is a sweet couple from France and, from my conversations with them, it's clear that they're proud to be a part of the small business community in Del Ray.

Half of a Caprese sandwich on a freshly made crusty roll. It was delicious and we'll be back for more!

This is a new business on Mount Vernon Avenue in the Del Ray section of Alexandria. The food was wonderful. The woman behind the counter could not be more friendly and the prices were actually pretty reasonable. I hope locals will patronize this business and give the owners a fighting chance. I know we'll come back!

We both love a good dirty martini, but this was the only hiccup of the evening. They were just ok. Not the worse but definitely missing something. The raw oysters made me forget about the subpar drinks as soon as the first one hit my mouth. They were outstanding! Our second round, her lemon drop and my old fashioned were perfect! We chose to dine in the sun filled atrium. Our server Susan was delightful. Given the theme of Josephine, which was named after the world renowned Josephine Baker, Susan's world travels mixed right in. Our food was delicious. We didn't know it was restaurant week, and although we're not big dessert fans, it's hard to pass up on the $55pp for three courses. She went with the Escargot for her appetizer and the grilled trout while I chose the beef tartare and the steak frites. This was my first time trying escargot and I loved it and this was her first time trying beef tartare and she tolerated it.. Lol Both of our entrées were slam dunks! We bagged our "Opera Cakes" to go for her granny.. Told you we weren't dessert people.. Lol! I absolutely loved everything about Josephine! I do wish they would add charbroiled oysters to their appetizer menu, which really would have put me in that Creole state of mind! :)

All of the hip young girls in high school recommended this place to me and my friends and lets just say, they have never been more wrong. My girls and I went this weekend for a birthday brunch. I wanted a crepe, but when I saw it was 17 DOLLARS to slap some Nutella and strawberries on a piece of crepe is outrageous. I ordered a "Continental Breakfast," which, with tax and tip, cost me $30 DOLLARS. I wish you could have seen the look on my face when they gave me a plate of rabbit food. All 6 of us looked at the plate and laughed. Seriously, my 5 year old neice can eat 3 times as much of that in one sitting. So, in what world would that be enough food for a grown woman? My friend then went on to order the French toast for a grand total of $36 DOLLARS. Mind you, there was only one piece of toast, and the Inside was raw and soggy. Tasted like eating wet, soaked toilet paper. On top of the overpriced food and small portions, our "server" came to our table for a total of ONE SINGULAR TIME. My friend had also ordered a Chai Latte. Surprise, Surprise! It never came, and they still charged her for it. I think the nice man who brought us our food could see the look on our faces when we received our food, because he then brought us a free side of French fries. It is a huge problem when the french fries were the only sufficient thing I put in my mouth at this restaurant. I please, genuinely beg all of you to NOT waste your money. I promise there is anywhere else where you can get a crepe for double the size and half the cost. Once we left, we went down to Call Your Mother, the Jewish Deli, to get more food, as all of us left with our tummies still rumbling. Mind you, a full bagel sandwich and coffee cost HALF THE PRICE of one meal at Fontaine. Horrible. Mind you, it is 2 days later, and I am still thinking about this. I fully created a Yelp account just so I could leave a review. I think I would have a better experience eating an IHOP Continental breakfast than whatever I put in my mouth at this restaurant. Not worth the hype at all. Save your hard-earned cash and be a big baller elsewhere!

My cousin was running errands in the area, so we made a reservation for a weekday afternoon. It was very easy to reserve online the day before. We were seated upstairs to the right in a very sunny room with skylights, wooden rafters, and a thin carpet. Unfortunately, the carpet isn't thick enough to muffle sound, so it was very noisy. Our server, Nadir, seemed distracted, using his phone in a corner of the dining room, and wasn't too attentive. Another female server helped him manage his tables and took my drink order. My cousin ordered the veggie quiche and I opted for the French dip. Nadir asked if I wanted cheese and I assumed it came with cheese, so I said sure. When he then listed four different cheeses, I chose Swiss. When it arrived, it was clearly not Swiss. When I pointed it out to Nadir, who was nowhere to be found until we were ready for our bill, he said, "At least it is all natural cheddar!" Hmm... Then I saw that it was $4 for cheese. Our lunch total was $60 (no alcohol). My cousin said she will not be returning due to the low quality of food and service. I'll likely give it another try, but my expectations will be much lower next time, and I'll probably just order takeout instead.
