    Seafood risotto
    Conrad B.

Visited 05/24/2023 No t-bone steak here... although they do offer it and it looked good... we've had plenty around Florence. We have to give the 5 stars because of our waitress, bartender, jack of all trades (Mauna?) was terrific, friendly and accommodating We started with a wonderful mixed salad which was very fresh and tasty. Lots of fresh mozz. Nice that they serve salad 'dress it yourself" as do most restaurants we visited. I settled on fusilli al pest con pomodorini (fresh fusilli served with a pesto and cherry tomatoes) which was creamy and delicious. Seems like all the pesto dishes we tried (and saw) were creamy. When I make my pesto at home... no cream, so this was a nice change. My wife had the seafood risotto which she loved.

Not recommended at all! Plan your meals in advance so you don't end up in places like this ! We happened to dine here because it looked decent from the outside. You would think it's Florence, how can anyone go wrong with Pizza or Pasta ? Right ? Well turns out this one got my lobster linguine with absolutely no flavor and a bit too salty. Had to dig in deep into the pasta and the shells to find any meat at all. And their Gustavino crostini had the wildest toppings again flavorless .

Florence is beautiful. So is steak. Gustavino speaks steak. This restaurant near Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio in Firenze proudly displays aging raw steak in its storefront windows plus a menu with multiple pages of steak choices ... which makes Gustavino a popular choice for locals and travelers to steak out in Florence. So, I got a steak. The Bistecca nella Costola (Grilled Bone-in Ribeye Steak) prepared medium-rare to be exact. It was good. It was not amazing. Of course, good Italian steak is ... good steak. Capeesh. Two local twists on Italian favorites carried more flavors. One was Ossobuco di vitelli alla Fiorentina con funghi porcini (Florentine veal shank braised with porcini mushrooms) with very tender meat carrying a powerful porcini punch. A creamier and almost too rich starter was Gnochetti fatti a mano con crema di gorgonzola e noci (Potato Gnocchi with Gorgonzola Cream and Walnuts) that would been perfect as a half order. Relaxing at our table with a bottle of merlot (Ca' Stele) while dipping fresh bread in Gustavino Extra Virgin Olive Oil was nice, but even nicer was ... steak ... Gustavino steak in Florence.

Second time in Florence... I don't know how we missed this spot the first time but definitely the best steakhouse in all of Italy! Service is phenomenal and steak melts in your mouth.. what more can you ask for? You would be doing yourself a disservice by skipping out on this restaurant.. definitely worth a visit, if not twice during your stay! Ask for Klevis - super friendly, awesome, very accommodating! Even took shots with us and allowed us behind the kitchen to take photos with the steak selection prior to lighting them up! Limencello on the house as well!

    Fresh truffle ravioli

This was our first day in Italy and our phones weren't picking up wifi or cellular so we were stuck choosing any random place to eat dinner, instead of something from our Yelp collection. But it worked out great! Even though the restaurant is a little dingy, and it goes against all the advice we got online (ie. don't eat anywhere with free wifi, menu in English, near a tourist spot, and with someone outside trying to lure you in) we still had a fantastic dinner! We got a bottle of the house red. For a couple more euros I would bump it up to a chianti classico. The bread isn't good but it's free. The ribboletta was AWESOME! granted this is our first bread soup experience ( so I'll update this post if my impression changes) but it was fantastic. I got the fresh truffles with ravioli and WOW it was so good. The pasta was cooked perfectly, stuffed perfectly, and it was so delicious. My husband got the wild boar pasta and he really liked it as well but it was not as good as the truffle pasta. Nothing beat that! We didn't get dessert because we were stuffed after all that food. It was nice to find a place on the beaten track that was still fantastic since we're only going to be in florence a few days.

    Beef stew: 14€

A decent steak house in the heart of Florence. I was disappointed with the beef stew I got. Expecting an actual stew with potatoes and vegetables, all I got was six large pieces of beef. It was good and the right texture, but who can eat that much beef without any veggies or carbs? Not to mention every bite had peppercorn. Ugh. I'd say stick with the safe option and go with pesto fusilli. My friend got a gnocchi that again had good texture but very weird flavors. Our waiter Klevis was super cute, flirty, and gave us free wine. He was the best part of the experience. Only downside was that he blackmailed us into leaving a good review on TripAdvisor. The atmosphere was great and very romantic.

The bread was so hard & sour.
    Adry G.

The bread and pasta were absolutely horrible, but the reason why I'm bumping it up to 4 stars is because of the delicious pizza! I'm pretty sure if I ordered something else I would be thrilled with the spot, but unfortunately my foodie experience wasn't the best.

The meat lasagna is one of the best dishes I have ever had! The waiter was so kind and the house wine was one of the best in the area

Pici with deer ragout, Parmesan, and bitter chocolate
    Hector M.

You always remember your first - whether it was good, bad, or indifferent. This was the first place that I had pici (a thicker spaghetti) and our first night in Italy. After eating it, I had to have it every other meal in Florence. Their pastas are homemade, served al dente, and you can taste the difference. We ate outside in a quaint narrow alley and a street performer must have passed every 5 minutes (it was very clique being serenaded the entire meal). Now back to the pici....it came with deer ragout, fresh thyme, parmesan, and bitter chocolate. YES, I said bitter chocolate! I didn't think it would all go together, but it all meshed. At the end of our meal, our waiter gave us a gift (a small bottle of the olive oil they use). Great gesture!

Painfully slow service, even by European standards. Took almost an hour to get a small pizza and lasagna...suggest you don't eat here if you have any other plans for your evening. Food was of uneven quality : lasagna was very good, pizza was soggy in middle and sauce too watery. Other reviewers have been more charitable, so maybe we just came on a bad night. However, after eating here for a week and knowing the caliber of restaurants in Florence, I think I would be tempted to consider other options first.

    Gnocchi

Such great service, friendly staff. Mirko was fantastic. The gluten free pasta was amazing. Would highly recommend eating here! (Below is the Gnocchi- So good! Not as dense as pasta from the States).

We ordered the 2.6 lb dry aged Florentine steak and gnocchi. The Florentine steak is a must try steak here. It was very juicy, tender, and it was bursting with flavor. The meat was nice and chewy. The steak was gigantic and it is bigger than my head. They first bring out the raw steak and weight it in front of you. The steak is enough to share for three people. The gnocchi was also very delicious. It was cheesy and rich. It was also in a way creamy and the cheese just melted in your mouth. One of the best things I've ever put in my mouth and eaten. The cheesecake is very famous in this restaurant. We tried it and understand why. The cheesecake was super creamy and soft. I had a great time and experience here. Definitely will be back sometime soon hopefully. This is a place I highly recommend to everyone. Come and try it out for yourselves.

He was awesome and had us laughing the entire night. We peppered him with a lot of questions about the menu, he answered everything and also accommodated my father-in-law, who is GF. For app I had the anchovies with roasted red pepper, sea salt and oil over grilled crostini, very good. I skipped first course and ordered the ribeye steak for my main course. Bone in, medium rare, sprinkled with sea salt and a side of onion marmalade. The steak was very good and had way less fat than I expected. The waiter suggested a huge steak for the table, but I was the only one ordering steak that night. Maybe next time. Others ordered the fillet and it was cooked perfectly, the angels and demons gnocchi, and the veal scallopini. Everybody was pleased Really cool spot with a very good wine selection, drinks, excellent food and a fun atmosphere that you don't find at many places. Nugo was an A+ server.

The atmosphere alone is worth a visit, but the food is what truly makes it exceptional. We ordered the ravioli, pappardelle with wild boar ragù, the Florentine steak, a mixed salad, affogato, and fresh strawberries with mascarpone cream. To drink, we shared a small carafe of red wine and a Pinot Grigio. Everything was spectacular. The Florentine steak was easily the best--and largest--I have ever had. Perfectly cooked, incredibly flavorful, and remarkably tender, it was the highlight of an already outstanding meal. The pappardelle with boar ragù was rich, hearty, and deeply satisfying, while the ravioli was beautifully prepared and full of flavor. Every dish felt authentic, carefully executed, and memorable. The wine was another pleasant surprise. Both selections were excellent and very reasonably priced, making the meal feel like an even better value. Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and incredibly helpful. He patiently answered questions, explained the menu, and guided us toward some fantastic choices. Although we thought we were too full for dessert, we're very glad we changed our minds. The affogato was fantastic, and the strawberries with mascarpone cream were absolutely delicious. One of the highlights of the evening was watching our four-year-old happily clutching two spoons and enthusiastically scooping fresh strawberries and mascarpone into his mouth. It was one of those memorable family travel moments that you don't forget. A terrific meal, a unique historic setting, excellent service, and a wonderful atmosphere. This was one of our favorite dining experiences in Florence, and I highly recommend it.

I wanted to get the earliest reservation possible, so the restaurant reserved me for 7:30pm, which was when they open. I was advised to show up on time - even a 2 minute delay would make me miss my reservation. I can see why Trattoria Mario was strict on reservations. They open on the dot, and then a staff member calls out each reservation at 7:30pm like a roll call. Seemed to me that if you don't have a reservation then you're out of luck, because there was no waitlist and the restaurant small and space was limited. Service was great. Our waitress was highly attentive and got us in/out of the restaurant quickly, which was what we were going for. Food came out in a timely manner. We ordered the penne al ragu, salad misto, and a Florentine steak to share. The penne was perfectly al dente, and I liked the meat sauce. I did find the pasta sauce salty, but it could've came from the grated parmesan. The saltiness was not a fluke. The Florentine steak was just pure beef and a ton of salt... too much salt for my liking. I also decided that I'm not a fan of Florentine steak in general.

Am I the only one that thought steak florentine was supposed to be served this way? Maybe that's was my mistake but I thought that's how it was prepared in Florence. Anyways, I was immediately suspicious when our waitress asked how we would like our steak cooked and her suggestions were medium or medium well. Uhhhh what? That goes against everything I believe in! The steak came out on a hot stone slab on top of a wooden box. The slab obviously continued to cook the steak so I immediately took off a few pieces to prevent this. The steak was thick and tender with chunks of large salt grains. It looked nice all sliced up but that's where the compliments end. It lacked flavor and ended up cooking to be more medium rare when I grabbed my pieces and then even medium by the time my dad grabbed his second slice. Our waitress seemed annoyed when we asked for the truffle sauce to accompany our steak (my dad forgot to ask for it when we placed our original order) and walked away with a huff to go grab it. The fries came out cold and limp with flavorless truffle shavings on top. I'm not sure why this place has such great reviews. Maybe it got too big for its britches and the quality has declined? The one saving grace was the crema bruciata! And the very understanding hostess who gladly pushed our reservation from 7:30 to 8:00pm due to travel difficulties. Whatever the reason, this place definitely missed the mark. You can't walk three steps without seeing a steakhouse here in Florence. My recommendation? Try one of those.
