Here's my honest take. I really wanted to avoid the area since it was so close to the duomo and therefore as I've been informed, most your touristy restaurants are near the attractions and are mainly fanfare eats for entertainment. My husband and I had been fighting a cold, and the wind on this particular night, just before New Year's was really brisk and I didn't want us any sicker, so we opted for a restaurant near the hotel, and this was steps away. Our trusted guest services man was off and wasn't available to guide us to a recommended restaurant. I again resorted to Google and Yelp. I saw the reviews weren't the best as other places we could have chosen. The other reason we settled for this was we wanted something with chicken since we had a cold. Their menu had chicken parmesan and this seemed like a good option. To start we were greeted by a host and then server who kept trying to push alcohol or at least it seemed they were hoping we would bite on some alcohol items that they wanted us to begin with, such as for an aperitif. Instead, we began our meal with the spinach souffle, which was pretty good. I also noticed at the point after they sat us down, that Americans or people who looked American were sequestered. This was not the first Italian restaurant I'd noticed this, but I felt it was particular with touristy restaurants. Also, no one brought any bread to our table, and no olive oil nor vinegar. What? This is an obvious tell-tale sign you're in a touristy restaurant or one that serves a large portion of Americans who don't eat their salad like Europeans do with red wine vinegar and olive oil. No olive oil with garlic for bread either. On another note, I'd felt rushed, and the only rushed restaurant in Italy I'd been to whereas in Italy one takes time to enjoy food, and this was another tell because they functioned like any Olive Garden in America, in and out quick for more profits. I had left to the bathroom, and my husband said that someone came by so quick and scooped my palte that he didn't have a chance to them I was still eating. Another thing that caught my attention was the entertainment value they presented when the young woman at the table next to us order the Cacio e Pepe pasta, which is just cheese, peppercorn and pasta. What this restaurant does is fancy the American thrill seeking eye with drama and flare by bringing the chef near your table, and has them toss pasta, pepper and cheese into a pan (the size of wok) all over some flame. This gives those would be attention-seeking Americans who can't bring their precious poodle inside the restaurant to get the "awes" something else to feel acknowledged by. I had asked the girl what she was having, and when she told me, I was like, "Oh, yes, other normal, locally approved restaurants, wouldn't go through the trouble." I undoubtably know her "cacio e pepe" was perhaps a bit bland. as was our watery Chicken parmesan, which I've made better at home myself. It was not terribly bland, but some onion, olive oil, sea salt, and a tad bit of garlic would have made me wince and smile. I'd mentioned this visit to our guest services man at our hotel, who had been a good guide for another restaurant, and when I mentioned this restaurant, he rolled his eyes. Enough said. read more

What an amazing experience while in Florence, Italy! Before heading back to our cruise ship, we stopped in at Osteria Del Proconsolo for lunch and saw their special of the day: Pasta con formaggio e tartufo which is pasta mixed in a Pecorino cheese wheel with fresh truffle. Easy choice!! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted and sat right next to a window, which was perfect for people watching. Our server was awesome!! She took our drink and appetizer order. We went with the house wine and their house specialty salad with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, olives, and sweetcorn. OMG, everything was amazing .... the presentation, (I wished I could upload the whole video) the plating, the taste. Incredible!! Also, they did not skimp on the truffles either. We stop by this osteria for dinner because we saw a sign that we were walking by and it seem like it was having a special. We ordered the beef carpaccio and it was pretty good. We're not as good as some of the other places that we had while in Florence. Service was great, but the food was not as good as some of the other places. Ambience was fine. Four or five stars? I rounded up. Excellent freshly made pasta. So prevalent in Italy yet so uncommon in the USA. I had the carbonara sauce with my pasta and both were delicious! The glass of wine was a dry Ruffino rose wine and very good. Bread with lunch was the unsalted Tuscan bread called Shokko (not sure of spelling) which means crazy in their local language. These guys were so great and friendly and welcoming I had to leave a review. I don't generally throw around five star reviews. The fact is I haven't had a bad meal in Italy and am probably not qualified to cast judgment since this was the only time I ever had the much heralded wild boar ragú on Papardelle. It was a great meal with great service in a restaurant that's been around for 50+ years. The enthusiastic welcoming service is not always a given in Italy. The team here was happy to have me and seemed pleased to answer all the big American guy"s questions about Tuscan food. Bruschetta: the toast was so warm and perfectly crunchy, and the tomatoes were really nicely seasoned, I'd definitely recommend ordering Prosciutto with mozzarella: loved the mozzarella, it was so fresh but if you're not that hungry maybe skip this so you can have room for the main entree Caprese salad: good and refreshing Pici w truffle and sausage: if you like al dente pasta this will be perfect for you. As soon as they brought it out we could smell the truffle, it was also a good sized portion, I was full before I finished! Fusilli pesto: same as the pici, definitely for al dente fans. This was a restaurant my wife and I stumbled upon while walking through the Duomo area one night. I was craving pizza and my wife wanted pasta, so we settled on those two things. The ambiance in the restaurant makes you feel like you are in a little family owned Italian restaurant and definitely doesn't feel like you are in a touristy area. I liked that. The service was not bad but not great either. The food was pretty good. The pizza I ordered had ham, salami, and mushrooms. It tasted authentic like most in Italy, so you can't go wrong. Was it my favorite? No, but still good. My wife ordered the beef spaghetti, and I actually really liked it. It was better than the pizza!! I should have ordered it! When my first reservation in Florence fell through, we decided to pick any random small restaurant that we could find around the Duomo. Despite not having a reservation, and the restaurant not having any available tables, they pulled apart a larger table and made room for us. We were shocked because the place was packed!! For dinner we ordered the pici alla norcina (pici with truffle sauce) and the bistecca fiorentina. The pici was FABULOUS- best pici I've had in Italy. Nice and thick noodles, but soft on the inside- you could definitely taste that they were homemade. The steak was HUGE (suitable to share)- cooked to a perfect medium. Steak was tasty, but didn't compare to the exquisite pasta. The table of 4 next to us ALL ordered pizzas- safe to say the pizza must've been great; I wish I had ordered some. Bread was brought with our food with the Parmesan cheese and olive oil BUT NO BALSAMIC VINEGAR. Bread was awefully hard (I might as well have ordered the bruschetta!) This is the best find in all of Florence. Tucked away a few blocks south of the Duomo, Ostereria del Proconsolo offers amazing food and even better service. We ate here twice, both nights enjoying perfectly prepared bistecca alla Fiorentina, which was a great value for 3-4 people. My wife also loved the pici pasta dish with tartufo and sausage. Walked past this place as we were strolling around the Duomo. I have to admit that this wasn't my first choice as the décor and menu options were more geared towards tourists and the TripAdvisor lot, than play up as an authentic Tuscan restaurant. We had the vegetarian pizza, which was good but the Pici alla norcina (a type of spaghetti with truffle sauce) didn't taste a hint of truffle and the medium rare steak was a little too chewy for my liking. My overall rating is 4.65 hence I rounded up. Hubby & I are back in Florence for the 2nd time. Our first trip here was 5 years ago and Yelp wasn't really utilized for resto reviews at that time but they have become a more popular resource very recently which I believe explains the mere 3.5 stars from 6 reviews. Trip Advisor, which has been a very popular resource for international travelers for a very long time, gives them a rating of 4.5 stars from 1218 reviews. After eating seafood all week down south, we were more than ready for some bistecca fiorentina for our first dinner in Florence and we knew this city is the right place for it. What drew us here was the display of fresh looking prime quality steaks, and the place was packed. After reviewing the TA reviews, we decided to give it a try. The owner dissuaded us from ordering a starter or pasta and strongly recommended to keep the menu all about the steak and he was right. So we went with a 1.6 kg or 3.5 lbs with a side of Tuscan beans ... we were in HEAVEN! Traditionally it's grilled to a nice rare but they will cook it for you based on your preference. The meat was so tender and flavorful! Drizzle some olive oil and sea salt and you have a perfect bite! I was looking forward to leftovers so I can have steak & eggs for breakfast (we rented an apartment with a full kitchen) but we ate everything!!! At the end of our meal, we were served some homemade limoncello to finish our meal! On our last/5th night, we had to return and had the same meal with roasted potatoes in lieu of the beans. We came here because the reviews seemed fine. And the food was in fact good. However when we sat down, we almost immediately noticed a disgusting smell. It smelled like poop. It was an extremely repugnant smell. We told the waitress and she made us move tables. That seemed to fix the problem until the smell moved towards us. We had a good meal and the waitress was nice but the rancid smell really ruined the whole experience for us. Have to say, we did not have one bad meal while in Florence, but if we had to pick one place that ranked the lowest it would be this place. We got seated quickly but they were really slow to serve us and served someone that came after us faster. George Michael music booming in the background did not give you the sense of a quiet italian meal. I had the spicy spaghetti and my wife had the beef and arugula while my kids had lasagne. None of which were the best we had there (not that what we ate was bad). I did regret not getting one of those big steaks and had I ordered one I might have a better review. We had some trouble with the train and we're about an hour late, but the staff honored the reservation. Everything we had was good but the cheese platter with onion marmalade was out of this world. My parents, aunt, and I have been in Italy for a week now (Rome and Florence), and this was my absolute favorite evening. Gerthard was amazing.
