We flew in to Tampa and we're going to drive to Fort Meyer's for a college basketball tournament. We had a very early flight so naturally by the time We landed we were hungry! We searched Yelp and decided on a different place, however on the way to that place we saw Guthrie's. We could see there were people inside and were intrigued. We continued to our original location however we weren't impressed and everyone in the vehicle unanimously decided we needed to try Guthrie's. When you open the door you immediately smell the chicken. It reminds me of another chain whose name I won't mention, but this is 10 times better. The chicken tenders are flavorful, the fries are hot and crispy and the staff is friendly. I love that they have their history on the wall. 65 years in business and I see why. Lived here my whole life and always drove by this place wondering if it was any good. Had friends recommend it to me recently so I decided to try it out. What a mistake. When I opened the 6 tender box my girlfriend and I laughed at the sight of the chicken. The pictures speak for themselves, a tiny fry and a small side lid for comparison. The one with the fry was the biggest tender in the box. Every single one could lay flat in the small side compartment of the takeaway container easily. $15 for that is insane, save yourself some money and go to Popeye's, CFA, or Publix nearby. read more

I've been eating Guthrie's since they first opened in Auburn, back in 1982 I believe it was. I was glad to find this location in Tampa since the only time I get to eat there is when I travel back to Auburn to visit family. As an Auburn grad, Guthrie's will always taste like home to me! I vividly recall spotting the *Coming Soon* sign for this Guthrie's location one morning leaving Easter sunrise service - I stalked them for updates from that moment. Since opening day, I haven't been let down a single time. This includes during Hurricane Ian - Guthrie's was one of the only restaurants open in South Tampa and after hours without power - my appreciation for those golden fried tenders grew even more. The staff are always warm and welcoming, the dining area is always clean, and the service is consistently fast! You can't go wrong with any of the menu items. This is a small chicken tender shop in south Tampa. Plenty of parking available and you are greeted when you walk in. Lots of booths and tables available for seating. The menu is very basic-do not come here unless you only want chicken tenders and fries. I tried the chicken sandwich combo with fries and my friends got the box which came with 5 tenders, sauce of your choice, toast, fries and coleslaw. You order at the front counter and they bring the food to you when it is ready, packed in to-go containers. The sandwich was very basic-literally 3 tenders, sauce and lettuce on a bun. No pickles, or tomato. The tenders just fall right out of the bun so I just ate them without the bread. The fries were overcooked and very plain. I'm so glad I finally tried Guthrie's! They offered us a sample chicken tender and sauce since it was our first visit. I ordered the regular box and hubby ordered the big box. The chicken tenders were very juicy and had a nice crunch to them. They serve crinkle cut fries on the side along with coleslaw and one slice of Texas toast. The coleslaw was fresh, tasty and mildly sweet. The Texas toast was perfectly toasted and buttered, great to make a sammie with. I really loved the Guthrie's sauce! Just about every foodie who lived in South Tampa in the 1900's has mentioned Guthrie's to me. He or she would talk as if a chicken-fried phoenix had risen south of Gandy. I admit I have all but given up on fast food chicken tenders. PDQ and Chick-fil-a represent the height of drive up chicken fare these days and I wasn't expecting much more. I was wrong. Guthries is next to a pop-up bakery (another place to visit) that's tied to a Pro Kitchen (yes, a place where good chefs make meals without the overhead of a restaurant). It is exceptionally clean with a kind of spartan industrial feel. There are booths in the front, tables in the back and a large counter for orders. I went with a regular box. 3 ounces of chicken, cole slaw, french fries, texas toast and Guthrie's signature sauce. I refused to think about the calories, carbs and fat grams. Without a drink, it set me back a total of $8.36. A soldier placing his own order let me know I was missing out on the sweet tea. The chicken was delicious. Moist inside, crisp with batter on the outside. I am a bit skeptical of special sauces but Guthrie's is truly special. I understand why people order extras. I dunked my chicken and my crinkle cut fries into it. I took a guess at the secret ingredient and according to the copycat recipes on YouTube, I am right. Guthrie's claims it created the original "Chicken Box" in 1982. I don't know about that.. but I do know Guthrie's chicken tenders now rank supreme in the fast food world for me. When it comes to fried chicken tenders, fries and sweet tea my kids are all in. I wanted to check out the new Guthrie's location in South Tampa and it didn't take much to convince them to join me. Driving from Wesley Chapel to South Tampa was quite the hike but luckily the food and customer service was A-1. My only previous experience of Guthrie's was from a visit to Tallahassee where my brother in law took us on a late night run to grab some food one night. I wasn't sure if it was the late night hunger cravings that made me think the food was bomb or that it was simply that good. Well my visit to the Tampa location confirmed that the food is indeed that good! Let's talk about the cool wall art outside of their building. Def worth taking a picture for your Instagram page. Inside is equally cool with the family history painted on the wall as well. If you're a southerner then you know sweet tea is king and their sweet tea does not disappoint. I really enjoyed trying this place today. I am a big chicken fan- I really like Canes and Zaxbys, and this is up there with them! The sauce is really good, and the chicken is delicious. The fries are mediocre, good - but I wish they were a little more seasoned. I really enjoyed the store. I sat in the back and watched family guy as I ate, and it was really fun! The staff were really nice too. I'm definitely going to come here all the time now. I can't believe I didn't know about it sooner. There's no place like it in South Tampa. Finally made it to Guthries! I'm extremely impressed that Guthries has made a name for themselves serving only Chicken fingers, Coleslaw, Fries, and Texas toast. I ordered the Big Box Combo which comes with Chicken fingers, Guthrie's signature sauce, Coleslaw, Fries, Texas toast, and a 20 oz drink. It reminded me of the Big Zak Snack Box from Zaxbys but waaay better! The chicken was fresh and juicy and the Signature sauce perfectly complimented it. The crinkle fries were super crispy and delicious as well! Prices are very reasonable and they do have a decent sized parking lot though it can be a little chaotic to get in and out of. So I was a little surprised to find my request of THREE chicken fingers had fries with them, and was charged the basic Box, not the side order of fingers ONLY. The reason for THREE STARS: The chicken was flavorless. I couldn't stop myself from comparing it to the VERY flavorful chicken at a Seminole Heights chicken joint specializing in Nashville-style chicken. Overall - left unimpressed...it's too far out of the way for that. The chicken is still great, but lay off the salt. I realized leaving on this last visit that they are right next to Popeye's too, which is pretty bold considering the ridiculous obsession everyone has right now with that place. I finally got to check this spot out after hearing about it so much on social media! My first impression as you walk in is that the place is really kept up! It's really clean, the art on the walls is really nice, and overall it has very nice vibe. But let's get to the yummy stuff! We got the regular box which comes with 3 crispy tenders, fries, some toasted bread, and cole slaw! For the price of it all I really do think it's a good deal and you can get the yummiest of all sauces THE SIGNATURE SAUCE! the chicken was delicious, they fries were good but could have been a little crispier. We then also got the chicken sandwich which has tenders inside with signature sauce all over it ( amazing ) and a side of fries. I personally think the taste was really great! The only thing Is that the menu is very limited only a few items. Which could be a good thing for many people, but I personally like more options. Guthrie's made its way to Tampa and I'm hoping this time they're here to stay! The owners, the Guthrie's, are actually the ones running things down here, which is super cool. It's great to see business owners doing the dirty work to make their business a successful one. Tampa is challenging, but it looks like Guthrie's has had a great start so far! I went with a friend, who tried the chicken sandwich, which is just tenders, lettuce, sauce, and a bun, but despite its simplicity, it's quite tasty! I tried the tenders box, which came with a few tenders, crinkle fries, a side of coleslaw, a slice of Texas toast, and their delicious signature sauce. Without name dropping, let me just say I've eaten chicken at A LOT of different places... but Guthrie's was really good! The chicken game is cut throat and Guthrie's definitely delivered great food and a great experience. They had a Friends & Family event tonight, during which they were comping everyone's orders. Their official first day of business will be tomorrow, 10/21/19. The combo box I had included some chicken tenders, dipping sauce, fries, cole slaw, and a large piece of Texas toast. The tenders were the highlight of the box and very flavorful and juicy while having a great crispy crust. The crinkle cut fries were also salted and cooked to perfection.
