Located on Dale Mabry just off base, we stopped in here for a bite after work. Nothing fancy inside and service was good. I ordered the Cuban and it came out of the kitchen without the pork on it...which is a major ingredient for a Cuban sandwich. Staff was busy, so I didn't bother bringing it up to them. The cuban sandwich was very good, although not traditional but I liked that it included salami, lettuce and tomato. Minus 1 star because I felt maybe they rushed in heating it, the meat in the middle was cool and not warm as it should be if left on the press a bit longer. While the prices have increased just a little, the value for what you get is still great, especially the daily specials. Have been chowing down here since 1987. Grew up 7 streets away. Went to school with the kids of the owners. Have eaten many a Cuban sandwich here. Love the place. But with that being said, something needs to be explained. If you're looking for an authentic Cuban sandwich, you're in the WRONG place. If you want a good coldcut sandwich served on Cuban bread, you're in luck. During the 50s, the popularity of the Cuban sandwich grew, and as it began cropping up further and further away from Ybor City, its ingredients got lazier and lazier. What I mean by that is that a lot of casual sandwich shops weren't baking glazed hams all day and roasting pork shoulders for 12 hours at 250° to have this option on their menus. Instead, they created a bastardized version of the sandwich with boiled ham, processed pork or sometimes turkey in its stead. They began asking questions like, "would you like it pressed?" and "Do you want it all-the-way?" Questions that infuriate Cuban sandwich stalwarts. This culture shift in Cuban sandwich making laid the groundwork for Victoria's. Victoria's is located a few miles north of MacDill AFB in a shopping plaza that was built shortly after the widening of Dale Mabry Highway, circa 1986. It is most likely the non-native Air Force personnel who were stationed there during the mid-to-late 80s, and their incomprehension of proper Cuban sandwich anatomy that lead to the popularity of Victoria's version. Just went to this place and though the menu was good, the waitress help was not. Once she dropped off my food, I never seen her after that or I guess she never seen me. After I ate, I kept waiting and waiting for my to go order and then it turned out it was ready all along, she just forgot to give it to me. The owner is likely to sit down and join you for lunch if he's not too busy cooking. The menu is basic and leans toward Cuban style home cooking. The daily lunch specials include an entree and two side dishes with buttered Cuban bread for about $6. A very filling plate of good food. The rest of the menu is filled out with larger selections for $7.50 or less. I often ask myself why bother having a kitchen at home if I could eat here every day. All I really need is something to warm up leftovers and to go meals, with a fridge for cold drinks. And you wouldn't have to wash dishes! So I've known about this place for a long time, but never went until today. As a first try, I had a Large Cuban Sandwich, no lettuce, no pickles. Disclaimer - I am very picky about Cuban Sandwiches. Don't get me started about "all the way" Cuban Sandwiches. I grew up in Miami, maybe we have a different definition down there, but there are never any lettuce or tomatoes. First, the good. Friendly, family owned business; we need more of these places in Tampa. Good bread - the key to any Cuban Sandwich. Fast service. The not as good - the bread was pressed and toasted nicely, but not enough to heat the meat through or melt the cheese completely. A common error, but an error none-the-less. Then the meat. The ham was good quality, and the salami, too. The roast pork (the prime ingredient in any Cuban) consisted of one slice of meat. Now, I would normally say that sliced meat is inferior to roasted, pulled pork on a Cuban, but it at least has to be noticeably present. In this case, it was barely there. Unacceptable. In summary, I like the place. I will probably try it again. I probably won't get a Cuban again. It will do in a pinch, but there are better choices if I want to drive further. read more
