I almost always go through the drive thru. A few days ago I wanted to introduce a friend to Steak N Shake. Yes, he's in his 70's and never went to one! We went inside and sat down. No one was waiting on us. I soon realized something was wrong so I asked a girl there. She introduced us to the new kiosk. Are you kidding me! Another one bites the dust failing to realize that if your not in the people business you're not in business! You're just selling stuff and that's all you care about. The food is still good and the pricing is fantastic for what it is but I will never go in again. And certainly would never take a friend! I started eating here over 40 years ago and the food and service were always great. A few years ago the long time manager retired and the restaurant went downhill fast. Food was bad and service was worse. The restaurant has been updated and new management installed and the quality and service are back. Food is great again and the service is fast. Never come during Happy Hour (or at least that's the excuse I'm giving them to use) I ordered for dine in and it took 30 minutes. It didn't help there were some super rude and needy guest before me. It didn't look like they were super busy at least inside of the restaurant. The drive thru might have been cuz all I heard was the milkshake machine going off. I didn't even get a milkshake because I was soo turned off by the delay in my food. The food was what I expected, typical burger. The fries were fresh but I don't see the big deal for this "Frisco" sauce i had to pay an extra 40 cents. I got the garlic butter burger and it was messy. The cashier who rang me and my coworker up was curt - not the happiest human. I totally get it, but I think her attitude could've been better - she most def. didn't want to be there. The line cook that replaced my warm fries with freshly dropped ones was so awesome - thank you, thank you! My coworker said I should return the fries since they weren't that good at all & so glad I listened to her! Also, he gave me a ton more fries - could've fed 3 people! I love their Double Steakburger. Gave her one order: triple steak burger plain, nothing on it. She replies a triple with cheese then? No, plain no cheese. We place the next order. She asks us to confirm and we do then nothing, No response. We say hello, no response. She finally comes on and we asked if she got the last order. Silence. We say hello, can you respond please it is pouring and I am getting wet. She replies, quite loudly "Oh my God can you give me time to read it!!" We said wow and we are going somewhere else. Yeap 1 star! Located across Plant high, one of the best schools in Tampa. Getting back to Steak n' Shake, this used to be my place. My friends and I always hung out for their shakes and amazing brownie sundae. I came for a brownie sundae which is one of my favorite things here. Warm brownie topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, fudge sauce, peanuts and cherry. OMG!! It's so damn good! Reminds me of my teenage years. I haven't been here in a while but this time was nothing special. There was a weird stench when you walk in the door, I had to discreetly cover my nose. It was awful! I haven't been to a steak 'n shake in a while and had a craving for it today. Being nostalgic we decided to sit inside instead of going through the drive through. We walked in and a sign greeted us stating "please wait to be seated." So we did, and we waited and waited as the employees (all huddled straight to the back) looked at us and kept going about their business (not actually doing much it seemed). Finally a young man came over and said we could sit where ever we wanted. Great! Not so great! There were 4 tables actually seated every other table was dirty. Littered with dirty dishes. Why were there so many dirty tables with not many patrons? Why were there a bunch of employees just huddled around the back area - no not the kitchen just the back of the restaurant? When we found a booth we thought was clean we realized it wasn't. I literally just walked out horrified. If that is how they treat/clean their restaurant I don't even want to know what their kitchen looks like or how they handle their food. Needless to say service was horrible. Remember when we'd go Steak 'n Shake in the middle of our college nights?? I remember going and waiting for at least 40 minutes before getting our food and the order was always messed up etc. BUT this time (fast forward 10 years later)... it wasn't half bad! Actually it was 3/5! I think it's a step up. Here's what was good about this location: was seated within 2 minutes. Got drinks within 5 minutes. And got our food within 15 minutes of first sitting down. That's actually pretty good! Now we all know their shakes are pretty bomb my wife got banana strawberry and I just mooches off of her (since I'm on a diet, haha). I got a grilled chicken salad with 1000 island dressing on the side - chicken was juicy and tender. Overall surprisingly good. I was dragged here by my drunk friend who was celebrating her birthday who was badly craving a grilled cheese sandwich. I don't mind eating at Steak n' Shake, I mind the disrespectful entitled drunks who have tendency to dine at these establishments late nights. I am still chuckling from a late night message I received a from a fellow Elite Yelper questioning my dining choice for that hour. Ahem..you know who you are J! It was just past midnight, so luckily the place was not too overcrowded. There were parents with kids (why God why?). Once again, yes school is out, but shouldn't they be home asleep? There were also some high school kids and then also several men going through their midlife crisis phases sitting at the dining counter. Kim was our server. She was very sweet and attentive and very easy to make conversation with. My friend finally ordered her Grilled Cheese sandwich, with fries and a side of pickles. The Grilled Cheese Sandwich looked amazing. It was grilled on Texas Toast! The fries and the pickles seemed soggy. Ms. Drunky McDrunkerson was incessantly complaining about the fries and pickles and she continued to shove them down her throat, then cleaned her plate! I ordered the Three-Way Chili. Yes, although it did not look aesthetically pleasing, it wasn't too bad. I had been craving spaghetti for weeks, but I have been trying to cut out carbs. Why not have some here with a "little something something"? There were an overabundance of chili beans, but I dealt with it. My friend ordered a Cookies and Cream Milkshake, but it took some time to make because they were short staffed. The manager was so kind to make one for her. We normally come here for dessert, since the shakes are great. We enjoy the variety of flavors and there are new flavors every month. Another perk is being open 24 hours, so shake time is anytime. Service is usually hit or miss. We order a shake but aske for it to be split with no whip cream or cherry. This happens usually half the time. So, instead of take out, we thought we'd eat in. My husband reassured me that eating in is better, you get what you want and they treat you better... Well, not the case tonite. First, we sat in a 2-top booth and waited and waited. And during our wait realized there was a huge puddle under our feet slipping as we sat there. Finally, our server came and we told them about the 1/4" deep puddle and they promptly moved us. That was good. We ordered waters, mine without ice and with lemon on the side. Well, the water showed up with ice and the lemons were the most disgusting lemons I had ever seen. Got the water replaced without ice. Ordered our meals, mine came to me fine. I ordered apple sauce in place of the fries. I got a Musselmans snack pack of apple sauce. I suppose I should be thankful. It was just unexpected. And my husband's steak burger came with none of the fixins it's supposed to; lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, mustard nor mayo. And neither of our milkshakes showed up. So we asked about the milkshakes and the steak burger's missing fixins and off back to the kitchen our server went. Our server seemed a bit annoyed at the kitchen for this foul-up. She brought all the fixins on the side, which looked nice, nothing rotten. But no milkshakes. I was done with my burger and applesauce and my husband was just starting into his and finally a milkshake came along. HIs was a chocolate malt. I tasted it. It was nice. Mine still hadn't shown up. When it did, I started in and tasted. And tasted again. Something was amiss. I tasted a little more and low and behold, it was a banana milkshake. If I had ordered a banana milkshake, it would have been good. Except I ordered an eggnog milkshake. Oh boy. So, it got returned. And I waited and waited for an eggnog milkshake. And while I'm waiting, eyeing my husband's milkshake, I noticed the glass was chipped all over one half of it. Some were pretty sharp edges. Not sure if it was broken for some time or just happened recently, but he was 1/2 way done with it before we even noticed. He could have sucked up glass in his straw or if he were attempting to drink directly from the glass, could have cut his mouth! NICE! When the replacement eggnog milkshake arrived, we pointed it out to our server. She appeared a bit shocked and advised the manager. But not once did we hear her say "I'm sorry".
