I recently went to Dr. Schlaerth after the hospital found a huge ovarian cyst in my abdomen. I was referred to him by my General Practitioner. I was really nervous at my initial appointment. He understood and was very kind to me. We discussed the procedure that would be best for my situation. I was given a list of preparations to complete before the surgery to protect me from any infection. The people he had in the operating room were very professional, but kind. The procedure was done orthoscopically. Upon waking up I had almost no feeling of pain at all. I was amazed feeling like I was ready to go home. After laying there for about an hour I was able to go home. I had previously had another ovarian cyst removed by another doctor and it was removed more like a c-section and took about a week to feel better. Not here though, I was quite amazed. Dr Schlaerth is an amazing doctor. He is patient to listen, kind and understanding and I feel so blessed to have been directed to his carer. read more

this doctor has been running my daughter around or over 3 years and still will not give her surgery she needs. he says he only operates on people with pre or cancer. I guess you need to have cancer before he will help you. we are considering legal action against him. GYN Oncology was the main office for Dr. Schlaerth. Dr. Schlaerth and PA Pia were great during our entire process. We dealt mainly with Pia, we only saw Dr. Schlaerth on surgery day. They are located right at the end of Methodist Hospital. Surgery was done at Methodist. We had an emergency and they came in to do the surgery during the holidays. Amazing staff! If it were possible to submit a minus star I would. My mother was referred to Dr. Alan Schlaerth by her regular OB-GYN. SHe had experienced some bleeding and a follow-up determined she had uterine cancer. My mom was in great shape for a 75-year-old. She required no medication and was on her treadmill for twenty to thirty minutes every day. Dr. Schlaerth performed surgery on December 6, 2021. She was released from the hospital on December 7, the day after Dr. Schlaerth performed a laparoscopic hysterectomy. Five days later she companied of abdominal pain and vomiting. The office was called and recommended she take 7 up to ease the vomiting. An hour later, we called for an ambulance and the fire department took her to the hospital. It was determined that during surgery, her ureter was damaged, and urine was leaking into her abdominal cavity. At no time during her three week stay at the hospital did Dr. Schaerth visit her or consult with the family. A surgical procedure was performed to insert a stent in the ureter to stem the flow of urine. She developed sepsis, which was treated with antibiotics. Her condition was so poor that she was referred to a convalesce facility. She was there for another week. SHe came home with a Cather and IV. The infection caused by the leaking urine compromised her immune system and a full range of chemotherapy could not be provided. She underwent six doses of chemo. Unfortunately, because of all of the above, she passed away on December 20, 2022, about a year after Dr. Schlaerth botched her hysterectomy. read more

Last December of 2014, I had my routine pap smear and was notified by my gynecologist at the beginning of January 2015 that I had a large cyst and it needed to be removed by a specialist immediately as I was already feeling uncomfortable to even perform day to day activities. My gynecologist referred me to Dr. Alan Schlaerth, who is a well-known and respected GYN oncologist in the San Gabriel Valley. Consultation: I called GYN Oncology the day my gynecologist told me to schedule a consultation with Dr. Schlaerth. The receptionist I had spoken to was able to squeeze me in the NEXT day at 8:00 a.m. to see Dr. Schlaerth, During the consultation, Dr. Schlaerth answered all the questions my mother and I had about my condition and the procedure. I felt safe and comforted knowing that he would help me. Facility: State of the art, pristine clean facility--my dad commented that all the machines are state of the art and it was one of the nicest rooms he's ever been in. They have two large procedure rooms, an exam room, a private family consultation room and a large, family-centered waiting room. They also have their own parking lot with plenty of parking spaces, the institute is located on the south side of the Methodist Hospital campus, if you drive down north of Huntington Drive, there is an entrance to their parking lot. Procedure: Since I was knocked out for the procedure, my parents told me that Dr. Schlaerth was professional and helpful when he delivered the news of the results. He was able to conduct the laparoscopic surgery procedure in less than an hour and I only had four small incisions on my stomach area. I was able to go home to be on bed rest the day of my surgery. He successfully removed the cyst (cancer-free yayyyy) and my recovery time was 1.5 months. Follow-up: Ms. Nancy Galustians is the physician assistant who did both my follow-ups. She answered my silly questions about recovery and was efficient in conducting the follow-ups. Service: I have no idea how the front desk lady was able to schedule me a consultation the next day I called but I am forever grateful to the front desk ladies at this institute. They always have a cheerful and pleasant demeanor while answering the phones and are able to assist me with my questions regarding doctor's notes, office visits, scheduling. I was referred to Dr. Alan Schlaerth by another gynecologist. I found him to be professional and experienced. While he spoke to me the morning prior to my medical procedure that he would be performing, he never came to speak to me after the I was in the recovery room. And the 2 week follow up visit, he had me meet with the nurse practitioner instead. I expected to meet with him to hear the results of the procedure and to review the treatment plan going forward. Nothing against the nurse practioner, as she went through the process with me. But all the information was rushed and overwhelming. It felt like he just discarded me as a patient since he did his part in diagnosing and now I'm on my own to continue my treatment with other physicians that he would be referring me to. I just find this to be so lacking and a cold way to be treated. This is basically more a review of a "doctor/patient relationship" than about his medical expertise. I found another gynecologist to work with and for anyone going through cancer, I highly recommend City of Hope. Their gynecologists, oncologists and hematologists are all in one facility so the medical records are all streamlined, and they all communicate to each other about your treatment. What an amazing surgeon and his team behind him are the real rock stars! I'm young and was quite nervous for my myomectomy. Dr. Alan, Dr. Brittany and all of the office staff were so helpful and answered all my questions. Brittany actually spend a good 30 minutes with me the morning after surgery to explain everything to me. She even tracked down a camera for my operation so I could see all they removed. Dr. Schlaerath is great. His office staff - well not so much. More like incompetent, disorganized and careless. I had a nightmare of a time with billing & communication! TERRIBLE customer service. First of all, I came in on November of 2014 as a referral from my GP. Dr. Alan Schlaerath for a pap. I had very little wait time and got in for the full appointment. He said that he was going to an order for me to perform an MRI and then have a follow up for results. Upon leaving, I asked the receptionists if there was anything required of me and they said no and that they would give me a call. About a couple weeks later, his staff gave me a call to come in for another appointment. There was no specific information given in regards to what it was for or anything. So I assumed this is for my MRI testing. I show up with my girlfriend on December 17th, before my appointment time and they were so busy that we ended up waiting in their lobby for OVER 3 HOURS! I had to ask the girls if we could leave to get some thing to eat, as we were hungry and wanted to get a snack in our car. We came back shortly after 15 minutes and took a seat. The doctor saw me after some more waiting time and within the 30 seconds he looked at my chart, he asked me what I was doing there without any MRI results. I explained that his staff called and made an appointment for me to come in... I thought that this was the day of my MRI... not a result follow up! No one had advised me otherwise, no other communication was established - no instructions or explanations... the doctor said that the girls should have told me to call and make the MRI appointment myself directly. I said no, nothing was communicated to me.... In fact, I was expecting to do the MRI test right then and there. He apologized and said they don't even do them there at his office. I was shocked at the miscommunication and irritated for the entire matter. I assumed that they were going to initiate the process or order or at least convey or relay some directions to me. I received a $181 estimated statement and another for the hospital statement pertaining to that specific visit, which I had zero services rendered to, wasted half my day in their waiting lobby and then charged from their lack of competence. The hospital not only charges you a fee, but the Methodist hospital sends you a bill too! I've been on the phone for months regarding this dispute and no one has the authority to override or take responsibility. Ummmm how about NO, I will report you to BBB and let everyone know what a graceful experience it has been working with you idiots. Every time I've called the billing department, I've left several messages, was never followed up with and issue was resolved. It had to get to points where I was yelling at these idiots to hand me over to someone who had some kind of authority and they would push me over to the reception staff to resolve. No one has anything to back up besides their notes. All they can say is "I'm confused on the notes here... you signed in and you are showing that you saw the doctor, (duh, sherlock!) and then they state that he wrote a note saying that he "educated" me during the appointment. Um, wrong again. It was NOT an "educational" appointment. It was their mistake and they want to claim payment for their shortcomings. I asked to be able to talk to the doctor directly. Of course they bypassed that completely and went around saying I will have to bring it to their manager but of course she isn't available now. I'm so sick and tired of this issue. Whether it is over $1 or $200 - it's the principal of the situation. I've already paid my responsibilities. They are unjust and unreasonable and are unwilling to do anything but transfer you to another person to re-explain the situation to. After 6 months of calls and endless hold time, I am pissed off at the fact that no one is willing to help me or even provide customer service! The statements keep showing up. The doctor may be great but it's not worth the billing hassle and agony. Unless you want to be billed for extra appointments that the staff schedules in and pay for all their mistakes. read more

Dr Schlaerth is the BEST doctor I have ever been too (and I have been to MANY)! Although I was his patient when he was in Pasadena and I haven't been to the Arcadia location, I would recommend him to ANYONE. I always had to wait about an hour for him to see m e but in the end, I had NO regrets. I'm glad I don't have to see him anymore (that means I'm not having major issues) however I do wish he could be my doctor for everything! He's compassionate and extremely intelligent. Today was my first appointment with Dr Alan. I should checking at 12:30 because the appt was at 1:00. I arrived at 12:15 . I was called at 12:50 to turning the papers that they previously sent it by mail and to sign the agreement and privacy papers. There were just two people ahead of me . Around 1:10 they called one of the patients and at 1:25 when I was supposed to hear my name they called the patient that arrive 30 mins after I did. I told the lady that i arrived before her and she looked in the computer and told me that my papers were not ready ?? !!!! And as I am a new patient I should wait until they have an available big room. She said she called the patient that arrived after me because she was a follow up. I think it was wrong and disrespectful of them to not have told me this when I first arrived or before called the other patient .So I wait until 1:45 pm and they still hadn't called me I decided to leave.
