My buddies and I took a road trip from San Diego out to Phoenix and stopped by this dope ass shop to get some tattoos. I was greeted by Lloyd when he came out and checked out our bikes and introduced himself. Then, shortly after he gave us some cold waters because it was so hot outside. The tattoos ended up REALLY GOOD and he was a lot of fun to hang out with and made us feel at home. We also got a really good deal. I would HIGHLY reccomend this shop, not only for the atmosphere, but for the professionalism and quality of artwork. These are great tattooers and great dudes. Tattoos are very personal and opinions vary of what's a great tattoo. So I won't delve too much in my opinions of what's good. What you should look for in a studio is cleanliness and courtesy. Gypsy Rose is by far one of the cleanest and well set up spots in AZ. There are studios that have that "too cool for school" mentality. Not Gypsy. The artists are not a bunch of elitists. They cater to the first time walk ins to the full on customs. Not have I only received multiple tattoos from the artists available, I have become friends with all of them. We walked into their shop on a Saturday night inquiring about a tattoo for my husband and a ring tattoo that needed to be retouched. I must say of any past experiences in getting inked, this has been the worse. The guy that helped us was very rude, his name is Jake, talked us against doing the ring we wanted on his finger, said that it would not look good, since the picture we showed him looked good because it was fresh, he said he wouldn't recommend it. My husband requested a second tattoo on his arm, he showed him the cross he was wearing and the cross in the hat he had on that night, he gave him a quote asking him for a $60 deposit to book the appointment, we set up an appointment that same night for next Monday with the agreement that he was going to sketch something for him based on what we've provided. A week had gone by, and last Thursday, we have a friend who is a graphic artist and he had created some artwork for us with the cross we wanted. The symbols on the cross are native american and the meaning on it represents a big part of our lives. My husband contacted Jake to let him know we had some artwork for him to preview since the appointment was approaching for this Monday. He had no problem according to the conversation when he called him back on Friday, since Thursdays and Sundays are his days off, he was also going to provide some art so we could compare and decide what looked best all via text messages. I believe this is very important and he MUST like it since it was going to be on his skin for the rest of his life. My husband sent him a text Friday night at 7:00 PM asking how the artwork was coming, he responded he was already home that night and that he would be sending the art on Saturday morning. We did not receive any artwork from Jake, and since the appointment was today, my husband texted him yesterday apologizing for being Sunday and being a holiday, and he responded saying it was Easter Sunday and he was with family, which that is understandable, there was no problem at all. The day of doing the ink arrived, Jake provided my husband with a penciled cross that was probably done on the same morning, he proceeded to tell him that he did not appreciate so many texts and calls, that he did not treat him with respect. That his text on Sunday disrupted the time he was spending with his kid and made him think about work. Jake was hostile and had a very bad attitude towards my husband. I AM SORRY, but he is providing a service, if he did not want to be called on his personal cell phone, then do not provide it to any of his customers, Also, besides the times my husband contacted him were not that many, he was not professional at all. My business is to serve the customers and provide them with the best quality service there is to their satisfaction, that is exactly how we expect to be treated from any other business provider. Needless to say, he would not even return to us the $60 deposit claiming that it was nonrefundable for a service not provided. Any of the reviews we see here on YELP, are good but as we can see, there are other artists mentioned not Jake. I guess, all these customers were lucky not having him. We had several tattoos done for us in the past and this is the first time we encounter someone unwilling to work with us, just to get it out of the way. We will not recommend Gypsy Rose to any of our friends, sorry for the other talented artists that might be there and are proud of their work and talents. read more

My husband and I have been coming to Gypsy Rose for a couple years now. We originally followed an artist from another shop, but were so impressed with the shop and the people, we stayed when our artist moved. The Friday the 13th special they do does require a little patience, as they've only gotten more and more popular, but it's worth the wait. They always have great flash and it's always a fun atmosphere. And once you get into the chair, you have the artist's full attention. You don't feel like just another cheap tattoo. My sister and I have been wanting to get matching tattoos for several years now and finally were in the same town at the right time and decided to get it done! Gypsy Rose came highly recommended so we called to see if they could get us in. They were accommodating and courteous, able to get us in last minute, and we were greeted with enthusiasm when we walked through the door. I was tattooed by Mark and he was wonderful! He took the time to work with me on the piece and helped me choose the perfect design for the space we were working with. He listened to what I wanted and took the time to make sure it was right. I love this place--clean, professional, warm, and welcoming. Ive been tattooed by Mark and Lexy, and highly recommend them both! (My 6th, 7th, and 8th tattoos) Lexy just crawls right into my brain and is able to create EXACTLY what I'm envisioning. She has a great sense of humor, loves feedback on the designs of pieces, and is a mind blowing artist. One day after just the first session of my second piece by her, I've already had three people ask me for her card! Her illustrative work is out of this world, and she's super quick and light handed. I have no idea how she does it--she's truly a tattoo wizard! Mark fixed up a very old cruddy brown tattoo of mine with line and stippling work, and it's really exceptionally done. The set up of the shop is also awesome--waiting area with flash and portfolios is slightly separate from the books where you get tattooed, so you don't feel like you're on display while getting work done. Got to Gypsy Rose at 5:00 this evening for the Friday the 13th special with a friend. Called ahead and Was told the wait time would be approximately 45 minutes, maybe sooner. After waiting 2 hours we inquired to see where they were at on the schedule and was told it would be another 2 hours. We were willing to wait, but after checking in once more we were told it would be another 2 hours, as they were still catching up on people from 3:00 this afternoon. Needless to say if their scheduling is any indication as to how the shop is run, avoid at all costs. read more

I was referred to Lloyd to clean up a bad tattoo I got in Vegas. When I went in he wisely advised the tattoo was not healed enough so I asked him if he could do a new tattoo on my other arm. All I can say is Lloyd is an amazing artist. He took my very basic idea and created a tattoo that I never could have imagined. From just talking to me, observing my jewelry and the various pictures I showed him he brought to life a tattoo that represents the wonderful things my grandparents gave me - my grandfather gave me a love of appaloosa horses and both of my grandmother's gave me a love of Native American jewelry. Completely disappointed. I came into the shop with my girlfriend (who was also getting work done) and it was obvious being a lesbian couple made the kid who was supposed be tattooing us uncomfortable. He was rude and unprofessional never even introducing himself before taking me back to see the stencil after a 40 minute wait. I have 28 tattoos and have worked in customer service for many years so nothing about this experience is new to me I know what to expect. After three (completely silent) failed attempts to place the stencil he became abrasive when I suggested he might not be the correct artist for me to work with being that I was extremely uncomfortable and he seemed to have no interest in tattooing me anyways. The owner came over to ask what was going on then rolled his eyes and laughed at the kid when he explained the scenario, needless to say I left with a partial stencil and a bad taste in my mouth. read more

I came in and got tattooed by Lloyd who is literally one of the nicest guys around. I called just hoping for a consultation and ended up being a walk-in that same day. This was my first time being there, and it's a nice, clean shop. I came in right after work and was a little concerned because I wore a dress that hits well above my knees and was going to be getting a traditional butterfly tattooed on my the back of my calf. Basically, I wasn't wearing the most appropriate outfit to be laying on my stomach in. Before I even had a chance to say anything he already had a sheet brought in and kept me covered while I laid down and he tucked me in snug as a bug to make sure I was well covered. Never once did I feel uncomfortable. My tattoo came out perfect and was just what I was looking for. Clean lines, and bold color. As they say, bold will hold. So getting gas one day i look up, and see this sticker for Gypsy Rose Tattoo. Since i have what is called Tattoo Fever, i took that as a sign that i needed to get my tattoo now! So searching Yelp for tattoos i make sure to look up this cool place named Gypsy Rose Tattoo, and all i see is 5 stars, 5 stars, 5 stars... you get the picture. I was impressed and so i decided to email them and check them out. Lloyd the kick ass owner got back to me quickly and told me to come on in. Fast forward to my appointment date where i was a bundle of nerves and excitement and Lloyd's calm and genuine personality calmed me down. The atmosphere and design of the shop was aesthetically pleasing and very clean. The tattoo itself was an addition and cleaning up job. I had received a horrid tattoo that i was never happy with and i needed Lloyd to pull off a miracle. During the tattoo LLoyd was very mindful of me and took enough breaks to make sure i was doing well. The pain was tolerable but even in that, Lloyd made sure to ease any discomfort i might have had. I have never enjoyed getting a tattoo more. I have to say i wasn't expecting Lloyd to be able to pull off the miracle of making this tattoo as beautiful as i saw in my head, but he exceeded my expectations. Lloyd the Miracle worker. I am so in love with my tattoo, like we are all supposed to be after getting ink. I will recommend this place and the coolest owner Lloyd to anyone. Lloyd looked happy to be there and his personality is extremely genuine and awesome. The tattoo i was getting was actually fixing up an old tattoo that i had always hated. I asked him to add a few new items and see if he could make it more feminine and beautiful like i had always wanted. While tattooing Lloyd was mindful of me and was focused on what he was doing. He took a couple of breaks and gave me time to acclimate to the tattoo since it was a 3 hour tattoo. Since the tattoo i had originally was so awful i wasn't expecting him to be able to perform any miracles.....but that is exactly what he did. He changed my ugly swan tattoo into a beautiful garden. I am in love with my tattoo like the way you are supposed to be. I have officially found my tattoo artist and recommend this place to anyone. I went on Friday The 13th for their $13 special because I had been craving a new tattoo for quite some time. Needless to say they were super busy and despite constantly being interrupted by people who wanted to know when they would get their turn they remained very polite and professional. I showed up around 6:30 PM and filled out my paper work and when 9PM came around, I became one of the annoying people and asked where my place was in line because I wanted to get something to eat, they gladly told me that I had plenty of time. So I left and returned a little over an hour later. Around 11PM they called my name and I was greeted by Mark who, despite doing $13 tattoos for who knows how many hours, was in high spirits and thanked me for my patience and for waiting multiple times. I was happy I was getting a tattoo so I didn't care how long I had to wait. After 15 minutes it was over and not only do I have a great tattoo of a cactus, but I got a chance to watch the latest season of Trailer Park Boys while I was waiting.
