I've been coming here since high school, and we are NOT going to discuss how many years ago that was as a tear slowly rolls down my cheek. The best part? One of the same guys is still working here after all these years and actually remembers me. I love that! Gyro King is a true Bronx staple. If you've never been, get up and go. It's conveniently located about a block from the 4 train at Fordham Road. Now, if you're driving, welcome to Fordham Road. Parking can be a mission. Somehow, I almost always manage to find a spot right outside. At this point, I'm convinced it's fate. Inside is pretty tight, but it's well lit and has a long counter where you place your order, grab your food, pay, and keep it moving. There are also a few tables and chairs outside if you want to sit and eat. The menu is HUGE. They have just about everything you could imagine. On this visit, I grabbed the Gyro Platter, Beef Shish Kebab, French fries, and a few slices of their Gyro Pizza. The Gyro Platter was exactly what I remembered. A huge portion loaded with seasoned lamb gyro meat, lettuce, onions, tzatziki sauce, and pita bread. Filling, flavorful, and a classic for a reason. The Beef Shish Kebab had a great smoky flavor, although this particular order was a little fattier and chewier than I would have preferred. The flavor was definitely still there, but the texture could have been better. Now let's talk about one of their newer creations, Gyro Pizza. After all these years, somebody decided gyro meat and pizza needed to meet, and whoever made that decision deserves some recognition. They take a cheese slice, pile seasoned shredded lamb gyro meat on top, and finish it with their creamy tzatziki sauce. It sounds simple, but it WORKS. Savory, cheesy, meaty, creamy, and ridiculously satisfying. I've ordered it three times now, and it has been delicious every single time. Definitely give this one a try. Will I be back? Used to go here every day when I was in school around the block. The guys that work there are funny as hell and nice. Food taste good but everything tastes the same because they only have 1 grill and 1 frier but thats not a bad thing. Their prices change and are handwritten so I feel they change signs depending on the day. And sometimes they dont charge you what the sign says so you have to be careful. They used to have a $1 slice not sure if they do anymore. Their white sauce is the best white sauce in the neighborhood. My teacher used to get pies for us for lunch from there and their pizza is ok. The gyro is amazing and the fries for some reason are great even though they are frozen and come out of a bag - maybe its the grease an putting other stuff in there too that adds to the flavor. Gyro King has been a solid place for the hand held goodness since my childhood. Not the most ascetically pleasing place showing its age and the amount volume they handle. They serve up serval menu items from pizza, burgers & fries and other on the go staples, and of course those gyros. Strictly a to-go spot except in summer months where you can cop-a-squat @ one of the very unofficial plastic tables and chairs right outside the doors. Top on my list because they actually serve real chicken gyros. They slow cook the chicken on a spinning grill known as the Gyro/Shawarma machine just like the lamb. Where I've witnessed many other spots try to offer frozen "steak'em" like strips when you ask for chicken. Here it's craved right off the machine and tossed a grill to ensure thorough cooking as you order. I'm sure that there are now many other places that are good or even better, but when I rarely have taste for a chicken gyro, GK is what comes to mind. The gyros here are so bomb omg! I fell in love with gyros back in the early 1980's in San Diego at a place called Canada Steak Burger. Since then, I've attempted to relive the same food euphoria, and decades later Gyro King did that for me. Visiting NYC and not having a classic gyro is simply unacceptable, so we were on the prowl for the best in the area. It was getting late in the evening and I was losing hope and on a fluke, we spotted Gyro King at the next corner. They were preparing to close so we rushed in and placed our order. The pita bread was hot and moist, fresh tomatoes, crunchy cucumbers, onions, lettuce, creamy tzatziki (I asked for extra because it was that good), and the star of the show, the beef and lamb. Gyronly as good as your last Gyro. Edit: So I've been here maybe 15 times now. The first 10 times, it was consistently the best Gyro I ever had. But then the most recent five, it has been anywhere from average, to absolutely awful and inedible. It almost made us puke last time I came here with my bff. I have no idea what happened. I think perhaps they changed the meat. :( I'm going to give it yet another try in the coming future, but literally, the last 5 attempts were tragic. The meat tastes nothing like it did. It's so fresh, it's so good, there's a certain spice about it that just rocks my world. If it sold orgasms to drunk girls, it'd be "Beer-O King." I did have one horrible experience here though, the most recent time. It was maybe the 6th or 7th time I'd been here, and maybe I was just not feeling well, or was too full, or perhaps it was an off-day, but the meat tasted so weird, I couldn't eat it. The traditional Greek kind is made of pork and is served (to perfection) at BZ Grill in Astoria, Queens - try that one too. If Gyro World is closed or the standard has dropped, the second best Chicago-style Gyro in town is close by at "Greek Express" so give that one a try. And that about sums it all up. When I am inside the store, or Thom Yorke of Radiohead is, it's "Weirdo King." But that's my problem. And his. He's a friend of mine btw. No joke. So make the pilgrimage up to the Bronx and try this place. Also try El Atoradero, Louie & Ernie's Pizza, S & S Cheesecake, Greek Express, Tamales Ebenezer, and Duck-a-genie Burek. These places are all worth coming to the Bronx for - they're amazing. And none better than this - Gyro World - the single best tasting, greatest Gyro in North America. Mark my words. And my p*nis too, if you must. Oh, and if every girl coming (ahem) to this place was experiencing "that time of the month" simultaneously, then it would, obviously, be the "Period King." Waaaaay back when I was just a wee tyke, this is where I first experienced love for hamburgers. I still remember the taste and texture it'd leave in my mouth after 2 orders. That's right, even as a kid I was a fatass. My stomach was full and my mouth overflowing with charcoal and ketchup. Oh, the charcoal. It's a shame you never run into charcoal grilled burgers anymore, some law must've been passed or something. Anywho, I was visiting an old friend and lo and behold, a testament of time: Gyro King still stands! It's been what? 17 years? I missed my bus going home but I had to see for myself whether it'd live up to memories. And it did. Every carcinogenic bite. Maybe there wasn't a charcoal law passed. Or maybe they're outlaws and dangerously playing by their own rules. Who knows? They're smaller than I remember but my hands probably got bigger. Either that or the burgers did get smaller and I have the hands of a 10 year old. It's not a fantastic burger; in fact, it's very reminiscent of lunchroom food, but it's hard to find that charred taste and for $3.50. Yeah, I don't even know how they keep business at those prices. Im not quite sure how i feel about this gyro, after hanging out wit some friends after work I stopped and grabbed a Gyro from a local spot. The smells in this place make you want to order one of everything but that was not the plan this night just a gyro to go lol. I got the lamb gyro with everything on it. In hindsight i should have made sure to ask for hot sauce because after the long ride back to mt. Vernon only to realize that there was no hot sauce really bummed me out big time. I've been coming here since the late `60's. The Gyro's are the best; and I've had some in Greece. There is some outdoor seating in the warmer weather. Other wise tolerate the crowd or take it home. The only things that have changed in 40 years are the price and the neighborhood. But not the overstuffed pitas and the quality of the food. So disappointed. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile now because I love gyros. I ordered a lamb gyro with everything it was 9$. Once I got home I was so excited to dig into it and first bite I noticed how generous they were with the lamb. However the lamb had a funny taste like it wasn't fresh almost bad. I've eaten plenty of lamb and gyros from various establishments and this was not it. This was my first and last time eating at this place at all. Word of advice if you decided to try this place ask to sample the meat before placing your order to make sure it's fresh and not bad/sour. This is my honest review for my gyro lovers. I was in search of a spot that made good gyros kind of like the gyro spot that use to be on 34th and 7th Avenue in Manhattan. I searched on Yelp and found the Gyro King. I read the reviews and read that the gyros were good. I went and ordered a chicken gyro. I wanted lamb but was told that they had lamb and beef mixed together. I never heard of that gyro meat mixture so I got the chicken. Well, the gyro was horrible. I paid $ 8.00 for something that I couldn't eat & had to throw in the garbage. The pita bread was thick, the sauce was thick and tasteless. The " white sauce" should have been a tzatziki sauce which is made with yogurt , dill and cucumbers. Gyros, Italian sausages, pizzas, sandwiches, oh my! While I planned for a taste of a quality gyro, I decided for a long overdue Italian sausage. Gyro King is a tiny food joint specifically designed for takeout while tables and chairs are available but is setup outdoors with weather permitting. The door touches patrons who stand against a window panel wall waiting for their orders to be fulfilled-- yes it is that narrow and tiny. All food preparation is visible in front of you and Gyro King contains two vertical rotisserie gyro, Greece trompo and the meat is hand carved into thin slices with a long knife. I love looking at vertical or horizontal rotisseries filled with whole chickens, ducks, pigs, turkeys, ribs, lamb dribbling with immense flavor onto the counter at butcher shops, cafes, dining rooms, or restaurants. Portions are immense. My Italian sausage $5.00 was flavorable and the hero bread was soft. I was hoping for some non-spicy peppers to be included. The sausage was immensely long in length but not too thick in width. It was not soggy as the hero bread held intact. Staff is attentive, respectful, and knowledgeable. No takeout menu and no delivery. I am due for a return visit for their coveted gyro. read more

This place is on my way home, just a block from my apartment, and I do really like the smell of the food as I walk by, so I started trying things on its very simple menu, obviously with a name like Gyro King, I started with the Lamb Gyro platter, a very generous portion of lamb with all the gyro fixin's, and a side of fries, all for under 7 bucks. Was it the best Gyro I had? No, but it was tasty, Next time I went with the Chicken, and was not as impressed. The rest of the menu consists of standard grill fare, I do like the italian sausage, and for 2 bucks you can't beat the Beef kababs, with lots of hot sauce and bbq sauce. The only thing that ever really disappointed me was the pizza, the sauce lacked any really flavor, In my opinion. Got introduced to Gryo King a few months ago after a close friend of mine has been bragging about this place for years. Finally tried them out and had a gyro. Definitely enjoyed, one of the best gyro's I've had in NY in a while but not THE BEST in which Gyro II on 34th street still holds that title and probably will remain that way till God forbid whenever that place ceases to exist. Gryo King can hold a good second place though and being that they also offer other greasy fast food (burgers, fries, onion ring, wings, etc.) it's definitely one of those nice in the hood spots to go to when you are just out and want something unhealthy to eat. lol.... read more

When the make there pizza it's not just some regular ugly pizza, it's made out of the oven fresh and favorite toppings.When the make there cheese burgers it's mostly nice and crunchy to eat. I love their chicken gyros, they don't use the compressed chicken, it's real chicken pieces and they give so much that there's no way it's staying in the pita. I like to get the yogurt sauce on the side, helps to prevent the mess. But in reality, we all know that messy food tastes better. read more
