The Gyro King probably doesn't need another review but really, I think the Gryo King is emblematic of the what is best about New York City, a distillation of everything that's good in the world, boiled down and concentrated in one small spot, ideally available 24 hours a day. You can get Gryos just about everywhere these days and most are good, but no place I've ever been to approaches the sublime multi-sensory delight of a Gryo King chicken over rice, extra spicy with white sauce and double hot sauce, hot peppers, pickles, onions, etc. New York offers food at any price, the most expensive I've ever had over the last 30 years or so was a $750 per person prix fixe place in Manhattan (someone else paid for that) but the I've never really had anything quite as amazing as Gryo King chicken over rice. I've ordered the same thing in cities from Paris to Tokyo and honestly this is the best you'll ever have anywhere ever. For under $10. If you're visiting New York or just not an outer borough person, its easy to get to on the Q train. Manhattan really has nothing like this, you owe it to yourself to try it. Thanks guys! read more

This place is SICKENING. My boyfriend ordered chicken and lamb over rice today, and he has the worst food poisoning I've ever witnessed. I had falafel because I'm a vegetarian and I imagine if I ate meat I would've been just as sick as him. I'm not even sure how this has gone under the radar with the health inspector because I even read other reviews here addressing food poisoning and the overall filth of this place. I will definitely be placing a call to 311 and taking this up with the health department because it's just ridiculous. Someone could develop a serious bacterial infection and need hospitalization. On first impression this place was really damn good! Being used to street halal carts coming to a place where you can sit down for basically the same stuff was a great new feeling. However looking back on it and the many times I've visited since the first, the food is kind of bland. It gets an extra star from 3 for the fact that you can sit, get a drink with most meals, has a bathroom, cheap prices, big portions, and customize a salad to your liking. Positive: Fresh lamb gyro and chicken marinated with tikka masala giving it a better zing than the bland chicken of the NYC gyro carts. Negative: Although very similar to the NYC gyro carts it still does not give you the same experience. The white sauce is different as well. Really like this place! Food is quick and good, staff is super friendly and helpful. Prices are very competitive. The only suggestion that I'd make would to be carry some tehina or hummus- but we usually stock that at home so doesn't really bother me when we order takeout. Not a bad place for some cheap late night food. $7 for a rice platter. The veggies are pretty fresh. The meats are well seasoned and the white sauce is full of herbs. They also cook the lamb with oinions, peppers, and tomatoes. Probably one of the better halal places. Service was good, they were patient and nice. I always feel gross eating halal though. read more

Anytime I'm in the area for work (fairly often), I always pop in for some lamb over rice (sometimes mix it up with chicken over rice). One of the best lunches bk has to offer, cheap and lasts a few days. Extra white sauce, maybe a little hot sauce, tell the guys hi, and buy a t-shirt. read more

Really good stuff. Every platter is tasty, and such a deal. The only thing that would make it better would be if I didn't have to cross Coney Island Ave to get there--which is why I'm eagerly anticipating the opening of the Gyro King on Newkirk Plaza. The big plastic shawarmas up on the awning that recently popped up behind a section of the plaza (next to the Chase) that's still under construction were a nice surprise. Can't wait! read more

Allow me to say this...I have been loving their lamb gyro, over salad, no rice, all sauces, for more than five years! I am not in NY full time! I am in NY for the summer, Atlanta for the winter, Florida for periods in between, and an occasional jaunt to CA. ( TERRIFIED of earthquakes!) when I am home, I get it as often as possible. When I'm in transit, I have a buddy shlep it to me. When I'm in ATL, I have, either, a buddy shlep it to me, or have a concierge take care of it! This place has the best chicken kebab and lamb shawarma in the area. My husband also likes the falafel - it's not over-fried like so many other places make it. The ingredients are super fresh, and the meat is tender and flavorful. Their sauces are extra special too. You can get an enormous plate of food for 6 bucks. The chicken is great and moist, the long grain jasmine rice pairs well with it, the pickled veggies are always fresh and taste great, especially the hot peppers. This is not like most chicken and rice joints, the meat isn't minced or shredded, you get chunks of it which I like. Small place, you can fit maybe 4 people inside. So here is why I gave them 3 stars..... The used to serve you much faster, now the guys behind the counter seem like they're zombies with 40 pound weights on their feet. If they moved any slower, the food might get cold. The person who served me was wearing gloves when handling my food and then took the cash from me with the same gloves and proceeded to handle food again. open 24 hours food here is always hot and fresh because they always have a line no matter if its 3 AM so you know its fresh food , they are one of the few halal places that serve a mini salad bar with their food , its TO GO ONLY there is no seating which if your desi you already knew that lol the people here are very fast and friendly they do take credit card FYI the portion is HUGE like I eat a lot and I cant EVER finish it id say its enough for two big eatters or three small eatters read more
